A Minnesota organization supporting Asian American leaders across Minnesota just received $2.5 million from philanthropist Mackenzie Scott. It's the Coalition for Asian American Leaders, or CAAL, and they're using the funding to launch a new initiative called CAAL Ignite. It's a grant program that provides $10,000-15,000 to Asian American entrepreneurs and small business owners in the state. Applications for the grant open Wednesday. ThaoMee Xiong is the executive director of CAAL. Laura Boller runs a hair and makeup business, “Laura B Beauty,” and is part of the CAAL community. Xiong and Boller joined MPR News host Nina Moini to talk about the grant.

A Bernardo Caal Xol, un profesor y líder ambientalista maya le costó más de cuatro años de cárcel oponerse a la construcción de una hidroeléctrica en el cauce del río Cahabón, en la región de Alta Verapaz. Se trata de un megaproyecto que ha estado vinculado a una empresa del presidente del Real Madrid FC, Florentino Pérez y que, luego fue comprada, en parte, por la empresa francesa Vinci.  Defender los recursos naturales, vitales para la supervivencia de las comunidades puede salir muy caro en Guatemala. RFI recibió a Bernardo Caal Xol, un maestro y líder ambientalista maya que pasó más de cuatro años en la cárcel por oponerse a la construcción del complejo hidroeléctrico Renace en el cauce del río Cahabón en Guatemala.Incluido por la ONG Amnistía Internacional en su lista de "prisioneros de consciencia" en 2020, Caal Xol fue liberado con condiciones en marzo de 2022 por buena conducta. Este maestro de escuela maya y q´eqchi, defensor de los ríos que bañan sus tierras, los ríos Cahabón y Oxec, fue declarado preso de conciencia por Amnistía Internacional, que ha denunciado por todo el mundo el proceso de criminalización al que ha estado sometido. Carlos Amorín, periodista e investigador, vinculado a la Rel UITA desde los años 90, se suma a nuestra campaña de solidaridad con el Sindicato de trabajadores de la maquiladora Winner de Guatemala y en especial con su secretaria general la compañera Odilia.

Barbro Budín trabajó durante muchos años en la secretaría general UITA, como responsable de equidad y género y de los proyectos de educación. Viajó varias veces a América Latina. Su forma de ser sensible y solidaria, hizo que se ganara el cariño y respeto de muchísima gente. Cuando tomó conocimiento de la situación de violencia que sufren los integrantes del Sindicato de la empresa maquiladora Winner en Guatemala, en especial su secretaria general Odilia, no dudó un instante en manifestar su absoluta condena ante tales hechos y transmitir su más amplia solidaridad con quienes luchan contra tanta injusticia y discriminación. Bernardo Caal es maestro y líder indígena q´eqchi. Defiende el río Cahabón, que recorre las tierras en las que nació hace 46 años, al norte del país, en Alta Verapaz; Guatemala. Bernardo Caal está en la cárcel desde hace más de dos años. Tras denunciar irregularidades en un gran proyecto hidroeléctrico fue acusado él mismo a su vez de entorpecer de forma delictiva la obra. Por ello le condenaron a siete años y cuatro meses de cárcel. Pero son muchos los que piensan que el veredicto del tribunal fue injusto, y que está siendo sometido a un proceso de criminalización. Organizaciones ambientales, como la española Alianza por la Solidaridad, recogen firmas reclamando su liberación, mientras Amnistía Internacional le ha declarado preso de conciencia. Hace diez días la Corte Suprema vio de nuevo el caso. Su abogado y su hermana hablan hoy en "Reserva natural", junto con Adeline Neau, de AI, y nuestra colaboradora Rosa Tristán, que ha investigado el conflicto. Escuchar audio
