James Ball is an award-winning journalist, broadcaster and author. He is a fellow of the think-tank Demos and the political editor of The New European. He is also the current chair of the UK committee of the Ethical Journalism Network. Having been part of the Pulitzer prize-winning journalism team at the Guardian who covered the NSA leaks by Edward Snowden, it's little surprise he's developed more than a passing interest in the topics of trust and truth. Amongst other titles, in 2017 James published ‘Post-Truth: How Bullshit Conquered the World'. The 2024 IC Index highlighted the crucial role of trust at work. With trust on a knife-edge in so many organisations now, we wanted to chat with someone who had researched into this vital issue. Our conversation with James explores the critical role of trust and truth in healthy, well-functioning societies, and what happens when the people we ought to be able to trust don't tell the truth. Takeaways Trust is a pressing issue in the workplace, especially as new ways of working continue to evolve. The definition of trust is nebulous and difficult to quantify, but it generally refers to the belief in what someone says. Facts and figures alone are not enough to change beliefs; trust is built through starting where people are and addressing their concerns. Transparency and open communication are key in building trust and authenticity in journalism and internal communication. Regular and transparent communication is essential for building trust in organizations. Balancing 'I don't know' with providing information is crucial for maintaining credibility. AI can assist in communication but should not replace human interaction. Effective communication involves building rapport, finding common ground, and challenging constructively. Communication should be inclusive, honest, and open to empower individuals and foster trust.
The leaked WhatsApp messages of Matt Hancock and his Tory peers has sparked debate over journalistic conduct. What will it mean for trust of sources and potential legal precedent?
On Jan 20, the Belmarsh Tribunal packed a room at the National Press Club in Washington, DC as thousands also watched online. Co-host Chris Garaffa was there to cover this historic event for CovertAction. To discuss the legacy of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks, the US government's attacks on them and why everyone should be concerned about attacks on press freedom, we're joined by Esther Iverem, an author, multidisciplinary artist and independent journalist. Esther produces and hosts ‘On the Ground: Voices of Resistance from the Nation's Capital,” available as a podcast and on 25 stations on the Pacifica network. Throughout the episode, we revisit some of what put WikiLeaks on the map - including Vault 7, Collateral Murder, CableGate and more - and discuss why we need truthtellers today more than ever. The entire Tribunal is available to watch on YouTube.Support the show

On the show, Chris Hedges discusses ‘The Trial of Julian Assange,' a new book by Nils Melzer, UN special rapporteur on torture. In July 2010, WikiLeaks published ‘Cablegate,' one of the biggest leaks in the history of the US military, including evidence of war crimes and torture. Julian Assange, the founder and spokesman of WikiLeaks, immediately found himself a target, accused of hacking, and later sexual assault. He spent the next seven years in asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, fearful that he would be extradited to Sweden to face accusations of assault and then sent to the US. In 2019, Assange was handed over to the British police. On the same day, the US demanded his extradition. He faces up to 175 years in prison for alleged espionage and computer fraud. It was at this moment that Nils Melzer, UN special rapporteur on torture, started his methodical investigation into how the US and UK governments were working in tandem to imprison Assange for life in the United States. The more Melzer investigated the more it became apparent that the UK and the United States were grossly distorting the legal process to revoke Assange's most basic rights, including due process along with the flagrant manipulation of evidence. The violations included the taping of Assange's meetings with his attorneys, in violation of attorney-client privilege. Melzer gathered medical and psychological evidence to prove that Assange had suffered prolonged and orchestrated psychological torture. All these measures were instituted solely because Assange provided to the public evidence of war crimes, lies, corruption and a callous indifference by the United States to human life. Nils Melzer is the UN special rapporteur on torture. His new book is ‘The Trial of Julian Assange: A Story of Persecution.'

An Australian and a Californian discuss Wikileaks for your infotainment. This week we looked at cable #09STATE23141 which touched on the relocation of Iraq scientists who were forced into their WMD program. Whether they were unsuccessful intentionally or not is to be determined. We are following up with the scientist from this cable to try and interview him, if indeed he did end up in Australia after several failed attempts to acquire a visa. But first we looked at the incident at Occupy UC Davis with the "Pepper Spray Cop." Also, we celebrate one year since the diplomatic cables were first released by WikiLeaks, and Julian Assanges' upcoming verdict. AND we talked about the proposed bill to the NDAA stating that the US Military can hold civilians indefinitely..... http://www.mediafire.com/file/ab24l47j5a70t9k/Meaningless%20Words%20Episode%2022.mp3
An Australian and a Californian discuss WikiLeaks for your infotainment. The best thing about this job is that I have the opportunity to speak to real revolutionaries like Jimmy Massey, who has made the world a better place by just having the guts to speak the truth. He was the original whistleblower from the latest Iraq War (how sad is it that we have to specify which war?) and let the world know that civilians were being murdered in Iraq, not just enemy combatants. He received criticism for this for years, until the Iraq War Logs released by Wikileaks Cablegate last year backed up everything Jimmy had said was true. On top of that, he's a humble and "regular" guy who was willing to share his story with us, along with new insights into life after whistleblowing. We were also joined by Sandra Peevers from RevolutionTruth & Occupy Otsego, whose valuable insights into the Occupy Movement apply to all occupiers, so listen up! Thanks once again Jimmy and Sandy, and you are both welcome back anytime :) Please keep us updated on your pursuit for truth, transparency, and democracy. We're interested in finding more cables with this survey, to see how these answers were answered in other countries, and they can be found with the description Response to Security Environment Profile Questionnaire - SEPQ. During the second half we examined some movies that we have both seen over the last few years and put them under the microscope, really thinking about them critically rather than just sitting back and taking them in. EPISODE 15 Recorded August 23rd 2011 An Australian and a Californian discuss Wikileaks for your infotainment. In this episode we addressed the cable #03HANOI2323 which was about the USG's concern with the amount of human and narcotics trafficking making its way from Vietnam to the United States. Vietnam wanted help to stop the trafficking of humans, but denied that there was a narcotics trafficking problem. It was interesting to see the USG concerned with human trafficking here when it went hand in hand with narcotics trafficking, and with both finding their way to the USA and causing problems there, and yet in cable #09NAPLES69 which we examined in episode 2 of Meaningless Words, the USG had absolutely no problem with putting an ambassador in charge of negotiating on their behalf in Italy, even though said ambassador was known for trafficking humans prior to this.... http://www.mediafire.com/file/1g48rd3d91llqlh/Meaningless%20Words%20Episode%2015%2C%20recorded%20August%2023rd%202011.mp3
