Today’s guest is Luke Collins, the Managing Director, and Global Editor-in-Chief at EY.  Luke has had a number of thought leadership roles at high profile companies with a background in journalism before that. Luke talks with us about thought leadership being at an inflection point where there is tension between the need to push users towards the products you are offering and the need to retain a sense of objectivity that engenders trust. We discuss how EY managed to reframe their thought leadership early in the year with the outbreak of COVID-19 and how they are using a Now, Next, Beyond framework to manage what type of content they publish as the world changes. Next Luke shares how he is using his journalistic sensibilities to help build content that is able to grab reader attention in the first 20 seconds and present short-form articles that deliver powerful and useful information.  Plus we discuss how you can use the same content in different formats to reach the end-user where they are and not where you want them to be. If you want to make content that tells the user what they need to know in a manner they will actually consume it, this is an episode filled with advice for you. Three Key Takeaways: ·         Thought leaders need to deliver the information leaders want to know and the information they need to know. ·         The format of your thought leadership is critical.  Breaking it down into bite-sized chunks is more effective than a 3000-word essay. ·         Creating thought leadership like a journalist would deliver a story can capture an audience and connect with them in an impactful way.

Tis the season for talk about elections and boy do we have that today. To lend some muscle to the conversation I have Nevin Adams with the American Retirement Association. We start at the top of the ticket as they say and discuss how who sits in the White House could impact retirement policy going forward, we hit on what that would mean to the priorities and focus of various government agencies, then we move to congress as a whole and hit on how influential races and committee leadership roles influence things. Finally, as we recorded this prior to the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, we have some written bonus content from Nevin you can find in the podcast notes in your podcast app about how a new Supreme Court justice could impact workplace retirement plans litigation. Check that out when you have a chance.    While you are there, if you have been enjoying the podcast please leave a review or comment. That goes a long way to help more people find the podcast, continue to grow our audience and help me bring you great content and guests like Nevin.    Bonus Question: Could a new Supreme Court Justice impact retirement litigation now or in the future? Bonus Answer: Unlike many issues that come before the court, there don't seem to be the same kind of partisan splits in retirement issue outcomes.  In fact, the most recent case - the Intel decision that set the "actual knowledge" standard for participant awareness of disclosures was UNANIMOUS.  The bottom line is that while every new justice brings a different experience and perspective to issues, but the impact of RBG's replacement is more likely to impact the legislative balance than it is the leaning of the Supreme Court.     That’s it, I hope you enjoy our conversation!   Guest Bio Nevin E. Adams, JD, is Chief of Content Officer for the American Retirement Association, where he is responsible for all marketing and communications for the organization, as well as its sister organizations, ASPPA, the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries, the National Association of Plan Advisors (NAPA), the ASPPA College of Pension Actuaries (ACOPA), and the National Tax Sheltered Accounts Association (NTSA). Previously he was the Employee Benefit Research Institute’s Director of Education and External Relations, Co-Director of EBRI’s Center for Research on Retirement Income and Director of the American Savings Education Council, and prior to that spent a dozen years as Global Editor-in-Chief of PLANSPONSOR magazine and PLANSPONSOR.com, as well as PLANADVISER and PLANSPONSOR Europe magazines. He was the originator, creator, writer and publisher of PLANSPONSOR.com’s NewsDash. He began his retirement services career at Northern Trust in Chicago, where he later served in a variety of management roles, culminating in the development of a proprietary recordkeeping platform, and at Wachovia Bank, leading their defined contribution/recordkeeping businesses. He has been honored three times by the National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators (NAGDCA) with their Media Recognition Award (in 2002, 2004 and 2013), and has regularly been noted as one of the Most Influential People in Defined Contribution by the 401kWire. He graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Finance from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois and after a number of years working with retirement plans, also received his JD from DePaul University.   401(k) Fridays Podcast Overview Struggling with a fiduciary issue, looking for strategies to improve employee retirement outcomes or curious about the impact of current events on your retirement plan? In the second half of a two-part discussion on technology, Peter Judge, Global Editor for DatacenterDynamics, and host Raymond Hawkins turned their attention on the data center industry, the impact technology advancements have on it and the evolving role of the DatacenterDynamics' publication. One of the cornerstones of DatacenterDynamics' success is its events, which they've done for years and utilize to bring the data center community together. But the pandemic changed all that, and live events planned for 2020 have turned into all-digital formats. “Once we got the hang of the fact that we could do these online events successfully, these events became actual replacements for the physical ones,” Judge said. “Since the beginning of lockdown, we've had eight online events, which, by and large, have gone along rather swimmingly,” Judge promised that, as soon as a physical event can happen, DatacenterDynamics will have one. Looking at the data center industry and the advancements propelling it, Judge pointed to open-source architecture and software leading the way, even if that pace is not flashy. “The open compute project is one of the exciting things of the last few years,” Judge said. The result is building a cloud service inside of a data center that benefits from cheaper hardware. A frequently asked question in terms of technology advancements and data centers is, as compute functions get miniaturized, efficient and use less power, will the need for data centers shrink? “The answer to that question is the reverse,” Judge said, “We will use vastly more data centers, because they are getting more efficient.” Judge cited Jevons Paradox, which occurs when technological progress increases the efficiency with which a resource is used (reducing the amount necessary for any one use). Still, the rate of consumption of that resource rises due to increasing demand. Data centers will survive, and Judge sees the need growing now and into the future.

Peter Judge may have started his education journey with a degree in physics from Cambridge University, but most will know him from his work as a writer in the technology space. His current role is as the Global Editor for DataCenterDynamics, and he shared his experience and thoughts on technology and datacenters with Raymond Hawkins. Judge started his career in tech journalism back in the 80s at the beginning of the personal computer revolution. “Journalism, when I started, was about phoning people, going to meet them, typing up the notes on a manual typewriter, and sending it to someone else to typeset it,” Judge said. “These were a whole lot of core processes that no longer exist.” One of the first changes, Judge noted, was his company got a DEC rainbow PC, which they used to type and edit. And, from that point on, the advancements in technology kept moving forward. Judge recalled many of the advancements in computing, like the personal computer and the internet. “We thought that personal computers were kind of fun, useful, but we didn't foresee how fast they would change things,” Judge said. The same holds for the internet, where no one could predict how important a role it would play in everyone's lives. And, although Judge saw the potential for what the world wide web could do, he was wrong about one thing. “I remember thinking that, when information is free, easy, and sharable and lives in this new internet world, it's going to be really hard for lies to get spread,” he said.

Somehow, in a year when we’ve seen the debut of a mid-engine Corvette and an electric Mustang, it’s Tesla that manages unveil the most controversial vehicle of the year, if not the decade, if not ever. We're obviously talking about the Tesla Cybertruck, which debuted last week in a circus-like unveiling with sledgehammers, broken glass, bullets, and an ATV. The dust has since settled, but the controversy over the truck’s design, how was it unveiled, and whether or not Elon Musk is certifiably insane continues. On this week’s episode, Senior Editor Jeff Perez and Global Editor-in-chief John Neff square off on the Tesla Cybertruck.

All week we’ve been arguing the Mustang Mach-E, an all-electric crossover unveiled by Ford last weekend to compete with the upcoming Tesla Model Y and other new EVs entering the market. The fact that Ford has used the Mustang name for this vehicle, though, is a bit much for some, like Chris, to swallow. John, however, thinks it’s a stroke of brilliance. Which side do you agree with? Show #645   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 18th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MAKING MACH-E A MUSTANG WAS A MASTER STROKE BY FORD From John Neff, Global Editor in Chief or Motor1: "You’ve got Tesla selling roughly 77.7 percent of all electric vehicles in the U.S. The Tesla Model 3 alone represents around 60 percent of total EV sales in this country. The rest of the market is left for over a dozen other EVs to divide amongst themselves. The Mustang Mach-E is taking aim, though, at the upcoming Tesla Model Y, a crossover-ish version of the most popular EV in the world, the Model 3 sedan. What Ford has smartly done is make matching the Model Y spec-for-spec a must. The Mustang Mach-E and Model Y both start in the low $40K-range. They both have a maximum range of about 300 miles. Their 0-60 times will both range from around 5.5 seconds for standard models to 3.5 seconds for performance models. And they both have four doors, seat at least five people, and can carry a lot of cargo. Indeed, if you were looking only at their specs on paper, you couldn’t tell these two cars apart."   https://www.motor1.com/features/382774/mustang-mach-e-name-genius/   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E DETAILS WARRANT THUNDEROUS WELCOME CleanTechnica give their rundown of the tech: "When it comes to propulsion, the Mustang Mach-E follows the same basic layout as Tesla vehicles. A drive unit sits between the rear wheels, and an optional drive unit sits between the front wheels. Lower packages for the vehicle will come with just the rear drive unit, while higher-end vehicles will come with a supplemental unit in the front for more power and better handling. The most powerful model, the GT Performance, will come with 459 HP and 612 lb-ft of torque. The pack will come in two sizes: 75.7 kWh for the standard range models, and 98.8 kWh for the long-range models.the pack will use flat pouch cells instead of cylindrical cells. While seemingly difficult to cool (Nissan didn’t even bother to cool its pouch cells in the LEAF), Ford did put an extensive cooling system with aluminum fins between all cells to cool them as evenly as possible under even extreme conditions. Will it beat a P100D or the upcoming Roadster? No. But the Mustang was never really meant to be the fastest drag car. Pony Cars are supposed to be smaller multi-role sporty vehicles within the reach of the masses and young people. People are already asking whether this is a “Tesla Killer,” and that’s not really even the point."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/11/17/ford-mustang-mach-e-the-basics/   GREAT ARTISTS STEAL Seth at Electrek gives us some insight to where the reveal was: "As the vans full of Mach E journalists pulled off the 105 highway, I was shocked to see SpaceX headquarters and the adjacent Tesla Design studio in the background. We were pulling into the hanger where Tesla holds all of its Los Angeles events. Journalists were looking out for CYBRTRKs (OK, me too). I was calculating the odds that this was some sort of coincidence. How many places are there in the Los Angeles area to have a car event? To use the same spot that Tesla often uses seemed a little…ballsy. At every press briefing from interior/exterior design, center stack, battery, motor, etc there was one thread that bound the project together: that Ford considered this an urgent project in both time and significance. It is basically Ford’s do-or-die project and nowhere is that more obvious than their choice to use their most iconic brand: Mustang. If this fails, so does Mustang."   https://electrek.co/2019/11/17/great-artists-steal-why-fords-mustang-mach-e-was-inspired-by-tesla-in-all-the-right-ways/   2021 FORD MUSTANG MACH-E WILL PLEASE EV FANS Car and Driver get into the specs of the Mustang range: "The Mustang Mach-E will come in a choice of five versions, only two of which will be available initially: the Premium and the limited-quantity First Edition, both slated to reach customers in late 2020. The Premium model comes with a choice of standard or extended-range batteries and rear- or all-wheel drive, while the First Edition comes only with all-wheel drive and the extended-range battery. Either way, the batteries are paired with permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors and located under the floor of the vehicle. Range will start at 210 miles for the standard-range battery and all-wheel drive and reach as high as 300 miles for the extended-range battery on a rear-wheel-drive model. The Mustang Mach-E features three driving modes named Whisper, Engage, and Unbridled. Each offers specific changes to the driving experience such as steering tweaks, varied pedal feel, gauge-cluster graphics, and specifically tuned sound."   https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a29810295/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-photos-info/?src=socialflowTW&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social-media&utm_campaign=socialflowTWCD   FORD UNVEILS ELECTRIC MUSTANG SUV TO CHALLENGE TESLA DOMINANCE Ford went an entirely new direction with the door handles on the Mustang Mach-E. You won’t find any Tesla  lookalike door handles here. The doors seem to be lacking handles at all. A closer look though reveals illuminated buttons on the B and C pillars.   It’s a seemingly small detail, but so many automakers ignore that their customers have smartphones and want to put these devices somewhere other than a cup holder. Behold the tech tray, which has a wireless charging pad.   The 15.5-inch screen will get a lot of attention, perhaps because its location and vertical placement is reminiscent of the Tesla Model S. But then there’s the physical dial placed on the bottom of the screen to control the volume.   Ford is hardly the first to move away from leather for its interior. Tesla has dropped leather and the Porsche  Taycan is also vegan. Now the interior of the Mustang Mach-E also qualifies.   there is something interesting about this 4.8-cubic-foot frunk. It’s drainable and plastic lined. Josh Greiner, senior interior designer on the Mach-E, was quick to note during a backgrounder prior to the unveiling that the frunk could be packed with ice and used while tailgating.   https://techcrunch.com/2019/11/17/mustang-mach-e-5-tech-and-design-details-that-stood-out/   UP CLOSE WITH FORD’S ELECTRIC MUSTANG SUV From The Verge: "Take away the Mustang badging and the tri-bar headlights and taillights, and I think Ford’s new EV looks a decent amount like some of its more luxe direct competition, almost like a cross between the Mercedes-Benz EQC, the Jaguar I-Pace (especially at the rear haunches), but with some BMW SUV shaping thrown in, too. That’s a testament to the work done by “Team Edison,” the group inside Ford that has been developing the Mach-E since mid-2017 after pivoting away from a Focus-based electric car. That we’re already knee deep in these conversations and arguments feels like progress of a sort, as opposed to a few years ago when getting people to talk about electric cars, let alone feel something about them, felt like pulling teeth or just plain impossible"   https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/18/20970193/ford-electric-mustang-mach-e-first-look-photos-video-la-auto-show-2019   AN ELECTRIC MUSTANG SUV? BELIEVE IT MotorTrend have a massive 74 photo gallery, and say: "There are millions of Mustang fans out there—why not leverage their love of the model and make something way cooler than a dorky compliance car? Do you think the front-engine Porsche Panamera looks just like the rear-engine 911 by accident? No way, dude. All Porsches must answer to the 911 and, at the same time, milk that same 911 for any and all credibility and sex appeal. Looks like the same will be true for Ford and the Mustang. I call that smart."   https://www.motortrend.com/cars/ford/mustang-mach-e/2021/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-electric-suv-photos-performance-release-date/   MERCEDES-BENZ EQS ELECTRIC FLAGSHIP INTERIOR SPIED "The Mercedes-Benz EQS electric sedan has been spied once again. There isn't much to report on the exterior, but our spy photographer managed to get shots of the interior, giving us our first glimpse inside." says Joel at Autoblog: "While the center stack is covered up, we can tell that the interior of the EQS will be very similar to that of the next-generation S-Class. In front of the driver is a widescreen display for instruments like that of current Mercedes products. But it isn't flanked by a similarly sized screen for infotainment. Instead, the EQS appears to have a massive touchscreen and touch-sensitive panel hiding underneath the fabric covering. This is in keeping with the concept's design, though the production panel may be more flat and squared-off."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/10/29/mercedes-benz-eqs-interior-spy-shots/?icid=autoblog|trend|mercedes-benz-eqs-electric-flagship-interior-spied   LAMBORGHINI AND MIT PATENT A NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR SUPERCAPACITORS The collaboration between Automobili Lamborghini and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has produced a major initial result: a patent for an innovative synthetic material that will serve as the technological base for a new generation of supercapacitors. Further research will  explore additional optimization of the properties of the material, and its production on an increasingly larger scale. Supercapacitors already represent a winning solution in high-performance motorsport applications by virtue of their exceptional power and durability specifications, and they promise to become an essential technology for years to come thanks to Automobili Lamborghini.   the supercapacitor provides enough power to the e-motor to deliver an extra 34 horsepower. Lamborghini uses this to smooth out acceleration, bridging the gaps in power delivery that occur when the mechanical transmission changes gear. Lamborghini says this approach removes any jerkiness that would normally occur during a shift. Because supercapacitors can be charged and discharged symmetrically, they make for an incredibly efficient means of providing a short but strong electric assist in a vehicle being driven around a track. The supercapacitor is discharged during acceleration and recharged during braking, meaning in that situation the e-motor virtually never lacks the power it needs to do its job.   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   "If you were marketing a for an new EV brand (or Tesla) how would you do it?”     I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 251 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #516   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 2nd July 2019. Comment from yesterday by Lounge lizard • 2 minutes ago The end of the quarter push this time has a very real benefit. The US tax credit will be reduced by half at the end of this month so getting as many cars to new buyers as possible saves them a couple thousand dollars   HAPPY BIRTHDAY TESLA i missed this one yesterday, 1st July is Tesla's birthday. According to a history written by CNN a while ago: "Tesla is founded by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. The engineers become CEO and CFO, respectively. Eberhard and Tarpenning were inspired to create the company after General Motors ended its EV1 program and destroyed the electric cars". And in 2004: "Elon Musk gets in the mix. The entrepreneur who made a fortune at PayPal, helps lead the Series A funding round for Tesla and invests $6.35 million of his own money. He becomes chairman of the board following that investment." We're also exactly 9 years since another big milestone: "Toyota Motors invests $50 million and enters into a joint venture with Tesla to develop electric cars and parts." ON June 5th 2017 Toyota would dispose of all their shares in Tesla.   ELECTRIC CARS GRAB ALMOST HALF OF SALES IN OIL-PRODUCING NORWAY "Almost half of new cars sold in Norway in the first six months of 2019 were powered by fully electric engines, up from just over a quarter in the same period last year, ensuring the Nordic nation retains its top global ranking in electric vehicle sales." says Reuters in a new report published today: "Tesla’s (TSLA.O) Model 3 was Norway’s top-selling vehicle, the Norwegian Road Federation (NRF) said when announcing the latest sales data on Monday. In total, 48.4% of all new cars sold from January to June were electric, surpassing the 31.2% seen for the full year 2018, and making oil-producing Norway the global leader in per-capita electric car sales by a wide margin. Seeking to end the sale of diesel and petrol engines by the middle of the next decade, Norway exempts battery-driven cars from the heavy taxes imposed on vehicles powered by fossil fuel. It also offers benefits such as discounts on road tolls. Tesla sold 3,760 vehicles in Norway in June, for a 24.5% share of all cars during the month, and was also the top-selling brand for the first six months. Most of its sales were of the mid-sized Model 3"   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-autos-electric-norway/electric-cars-grab-almost-half-of-sales-in-oil-producing-norway-idUSKCN1TW2WO     GENESIS CONFIRMS ELECTRIC SEDAN FOR 2021 "The first electric car for Hyundai's Genesis brand is due in 2021. Manfred Fitzgerald, the brand's global executive vice president, noted to Australia's Drive that the company is working on a new electric platform that is likely to spawn both a sedan and an SUV, with the sedan likely to come first." says Green Car Reports: "Though Genesis has shown several EV concepts over the years, the introduction of a conventional luxury electric sedan—rather than the already expected electric SUV—represents a new direction for the brand."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1123810_genesis-confirms-electric-sedan-for-2021   IN MAY 2019, PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES IN EUROPE EXCEEDED 36,000 This past month, some 36,200 plug-ins were registered, although PHEVs are still dropping. The quickest segment of the market turns out to be all-electric cars, as the sales increase amounted to 85%! The Renault ZOE (outgoing generation) scored a strong #1 in the model rank with 4,031 new registrations, followed by Tesla Model 3 (2,802), BMW i3 (2,580), Volkswagen e-Golf (1,946) and Nissan LEAF (just 1,603).   https://insideevs.com/news/356644/may-2019-plugin-car-sales-europe-36000/   THE NEXT HYBRID – HOW ABOUT A CRUISE SHIP? I love this next story from AutoBlog, about how EV batteries are getting everywhere: "The world’s first cruise ship propelled partially by battery power is set to head out from northern Norway on its maiden voyage, cruise operator Hurtigruten said on Monday. The hybrid expedition cruise ship, the Roald Amundsen, can take 500 passengers and is designed to sail in harsh climate waters. While the engines run mainly on marine gasoil, the ship’s battery pack enables it to run solely on batteries for around 45 to 60 minutes under ideal conditions, Hurtigruten Chief Executive Daniel Skjeldam told Reuters."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/07/01/the-next-hybrid-how-about-a-cruise-ship/   BRITISH AND CHINESE CAR INDUSTRIES ANNOUNCE NEW AGREEMENT The British and Chinese car industries have signed a new agreement that will enable them to collaborate on automotive technology and development. Britain’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced the new deal, which is intended to “create new business opportunities” between the two nations. According to the SMMT, though, the new deal will open up opportunities for connected and autonomous vehicles, low- and zero-emission technology and battery research and development. The organisation says these are “no longer local issues”, and countries would have to collaborate to solve them."   https://uk.motor1.com/news/356390/british-chinese-car-industries-agreement/   DYSON'S FURY AT HONDA OVER ELECTRIC CAR SNUB "Sir James Dyson has accused Honda of scuppering a deal that could have led to him building his new electric car in Britain." writes ThisIsMoney.co.uk: "In a letter seen by The Mail on Sunday, the billionaire entrepreneur claims he tried to negotiate a deal with Honda to use part of its factory in Swindon, Wiltshire – but he says the Japanese car giant refused. The 72-year-old's eponymous company, Dyson, also failed in an attempt to expand into Government-owned land in Wiltshire, sources said and instead revealed plans in October to manufacture its electric vehicles in Singapore rather than the UK. Honda last night waded into the row, dismissing Sir James's claims as 'factually inaccurate'."   https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/news/article-7195965/Dyson-claims-car-giant-Honda-rejected-bid-build-new-model-UK-plant.html   COULD IT BE? CAMARO COULD RETURN AS PURE EV PONY CAR "Rumors suggest that Chevrolet doesn't intend to give the Camaro a new generation, causing the pony car to get the axe for the second time in the model's history. Now, new speculation indicates that the Bowtie might revive the model as a performance-oriented electric vehicle, according to Car Buzz without citing specific sources." here to tell us more, Global Editor in Chief of Motor1.com is John Neff...   https://www.motor1.com/news/357444/chevy-camaro-ev-return-rumor/     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. What does a bird’s eye view of the compliance profession look like? Join us on this episode of Great Women in Compliance with Rebecca Hughes Parker, the Global Editor-in-Chief at Anti-Corruption Report and Cybersecurity Law Report, as she talks about the biggest trends in compliance, what it’s like to be a woman in a senior compliance position, and the future of women in the profession. From litigation to publishing Rebecca used to be a litigation lawyer, where you would have a client and a particular set of facts to focus on to advocate for that client. Now that she’s in publishing, she can step back and examine the law and compliance approaches from all angles, see the bigger picture and communicate it to people in a way that is clear, but also complex and sophisticated. Rebecca shares their growth from small beginnings, starting out as the FCPA Report, to launching the Cybersecurity Law Report in 2015. Biggest trends There is an increasing focus on moving away from rules-based compliance to having holistic programs that are really embedding the ethical culture into the company. Rebecca also notes the gap between lawyers and technology specialists, especially as we move into the cybersecurity and data privacy space. There needs to be a bridge so the two can speak the same language. Many trends are also driven by regulations: a big one was GDPR, and the California Consumer Privacy Act is coming into effect next year, both of which have the attention of very many compliance professionals. Handling third parties is also a huge part of compliance, as they are responsible for a huge part of risk breaches. Due diligence and continuous monitoring of third parties are definitely themes that we have to address. Women in senior positions As women, it can be hard to project authority without being called bossy, shrill, or brazen. Rebecca doesn’t feel like she’s alone in having to figure out the best tone to take. And though it’s great that women are thought of as bringing people together and very cooperative, maternal, and nurturing, it can be a little stereotypical and hamper women, making it harder for them to get angry and aggressive and have that be okay. Rebecca had a stay at home husband for many years, and it’s not easy to change people’s views of what mothers and fathers should be doing. There are uneven expectations for each parent, and she shares how her husband would receive accolades for taking care of the children — which is fantastic, but moms do that all the time. So to be a working mom with a stay at home dad involved a lot of societally imposed guilt that she had to push away. Advice to women starting out This is a really great time for compliance: it’s become a profession on its own and it is such a great community. You can make your own stamp on it and innovate: there are so many ways to think out of the box and there’s more room now for non-lawyers. Also, women need to get equal pay. Hopefully, we’ll start rolling back the outdated notions about women and what they can do. She shares the story of her friend who was made to wear heels to court instead of her ballet flats, and she remembers thinking, we’ve come so far… but there really is still such a long way to go. But the more we see women in high places, the more comfortable we get with women in these kinds of positions. So she’s really optimistic. Resources Rebecca Hughes Parker

Every podcaster on the planet wants a bigger audience. Unquestioned. But most of us start out with a great idea for a podcast (at least we think so), grab a mic, plug it in, hit the record button, and we start talking. We don’t start where we SHOULD start - with knowledge of the audience we want to speak to. Why is that so important? To answer the question I’ve asked Tommy Walker to be my guest on this episode. Tommy has vast experience in Content Marketing (which is what podasting is) and the principles he’s learned there apply directly - almost across the board - to podcasting. Listen up. Take notes. Work hard to understand what Tommy’s sharing. It could grow your audience like nothing else. Critical Role Podcast www.ThinkGeek.com Marc Maron Podcast Seinfeld TV show - No Double Dipping Entrepreneur On Fire with John Lee Dumas How To Analyze A Script For Actors   Who IS your audience, really? Most of us podcasters don’t really know. We say general things about our audience that would be obvious to anyone - but what do those things tell us ABOUT them, about their habits, about their entertainment choices, about the things they might be interested in online? When we know that kind of stuff we’re able to track them down, hang out with them, talk about the things they are already interested in, befriend them, and eventually, get them interested in our podcast (because they are the kind of people who will like it). Tommy shares his approach to researching a target audience for content marketing - and it’s not so far off from what we need to be doing to find and befriend our listening audiences.   But that sounds like a lot of work, do I really have to do it?   Yep, it is a lot of work. And no, you don’t have to do it - not if you don’t care if your podcast audience grows. Not if you don’t want to find the people your podcast can truly help.   OK - I’m exaggerating a bit there. If you stay consistent with the production of great content, you MAY be able to attract a good following over time, through the slow trickle of word-of-mouth growth.   If that happens, it’s good. I’m happy for you - really. But if you want to get there faster… well, that’s why I asked Tommy to spill the beans for us.   On this episode he talks about things like demographics and psychographics - and unpacks them so we can understand what in the HECK he’s talking about.   SO THAT we can find, meet, befriend, and add value to the people who will benefit from our podcast. That’s something we all need, isn’t it? To speak to your audience effectively you need to know how they think   You will speak differently to a 45 year old man than you will to a Jr. High girl - for a number of reasons. But one of the main reasons is because you know they like different things, relate to different things, have extremely different opinions, and behave very differently.   The fact that you know that kind of stuff is - wait for it - because you know some psychographics about them.   Simply put, psychographics has to do with studying the activity, interests, opinions, attitudes, values, and behaviors of a group of people.   In YOUR case: the type of people who listen to a show that is about what YOUR show is about.   Capiche?   You need to know everything about your audience you can possibly know. Of course, there will be individual differences, but generally speaking, people interested in Dungeons and Dragons are also interested in Game of Thrones. People who are interested in Justin Beiber are also likely interested in the Twilight movies and books.   How do I know that? Psychographics.   What that MEANS for your show is this: If you’re trying to reach the kind of people who are interested in Justin Bieber, you may want to hang out in Facebook groups and physical locations where Twilight is a topic. You’re hanging out with the crowd you’re trying to reach, based on what you know about their entertainment choices.   Tommy explains how to go in-depth with that kind of research, on this episode. People who share your content aren’t jazzed about you. They share things as an extension of themselves.   It’s disappointing, I know - but the people who share your stuff do so because of how it makes them look - not because you are all that great. There’s nothing you can do about it - except capitalize on it (in a good way).   What is it that those “sharers” are trying to accomplish? How are they wanting to appear to their peers? You can help them achieve those goals by creating the kind of content they like to share.   And how do you know what kind of content that is? By doing your homework/research.   In this conversation Tommy Walker explains what you can do to create the kind of content your audience will be eager to share, so listen closely and take notes so you don’t miss it.

Ten years ago, in September 2008, Lehman Brothers failed. It marked a decisive moment in the financial crisis, one where the U.S. economy plunged into what we now know as the Great Recession. With such a momentous anniversary approaching (September 15, if you want to mark your calendar), you can expect there'll be a slew of stories that look back at what happened and where things stand. But there’s another anniversary that’s not getting as much attention. Ten years before Lehman, in 1998, the country faced another possible crisis, and at its center was another financial firm, Long-Term Capital Management. LTCM, as it was known, was one of the world's largest hedge funds. But after Russia defaulted on its debt, LTCM faced a near collapse as a result of its investments along with too much leverage (a significant reason behind the financial crisis in 2008). The New York Federal Reserve Bank stepped in and organized a bailout of LTCM with the backing of the largest banks on Wall Street. This week on Money Talking, Rob Cox, Global Editor of Reuters Breakingviews, discusses what we did — and didn't — learn from the global financial crash that nearly was, and what the lasting impacts we can see today.
