Country music is often referred to as the quintessential American music – and yet the contributions and influences of Black Americans is often erased and ignored. A prime example: Members of the Carter family were among country music's first big stars, producing some of the earliest commercial recordings in the 1920s. While the Carters are celebrated to this day, few know the name of Lesley Riddle, a Black musician who was instrumental in developing the Carter sound. Even the banjo – an instrument most associated with Appalachia where A.P. Carter and Lesley Riddle researched folk music – has had its African roots neglected over time. The rich cultural legacy of this American genre is only recently getting reexamined as African Americans and other communities of color are telling their own stories and histories of contribution to the origins of country music. As Houston's own Beyoncé drops her most recent album, “Cowboy Carter”, some are saying that an artist mostly linked to R&B and hip-hop has no business on the country charts or airwaves. But the owners of a new music enterprise in Houston would respectfully disagree as they live the country life right here in Space City. Join us as I SEE U's Eddie Robinson chats with the founders of LaChachere Music Group (LMG), a premiere country music entertainment company based in Houston and Nashville. Owners Dennis Chachere and Ahsaki LaFrance-Chachere stop by our Third Ward studios — just blocks away from Queen Bey's childhood home. We'll dive deep into why there remains tension in country music spaces when Black artists desire the spotlight — a notion Beyoncé modestly referred to in a recent Instagram post. Plus, LMG artist, singer-songwriter Caleb James, breaks out his guitar and offers up powerful vocals reminiscent of Charley Pride in an exclusive, live in-studio performance of his latest single, “Just a Few Things.”

This week on A Voice and Beyond we continue delving into the world of Popular Music education in academia, as we release part two of our two-part interview with our guest, Caleb James who is a Senior Lecturer in the Bachelor of Music at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University and is the Course Convenor of the Popular Music Program. In Part 1, Caleb shared his career pathway from a highly successful career in the music industry as an award-winning touring performer, international songwriter and music producer, working at a high level with Record Labels, and Distribution Labels, and how he transitioned into an academic career in a supervisory role. In this episode, Caleb discusses how he has developed and continues updating the course content for the popular music program, which is growing in demand every year.Although QCGU has adopted such an innovative popular music program, Caleb understands that not all academic institutions are so receptive or progressive when it comes to change. Caleb describes some of the roadblocks that teachers, educators and the institutions themselves may encounter while trying to update and create new curricula. He tells us quite candidly that when developing new academic music programs, it requires a commitment to controlled chaos. He believes that students who do arts' degrees don't want to go down traditional learning pathways and it takes steady calculated risks to create an environment where students are excited to be there to learn.Remember this is Part 2 of a two-part interview with Caleb James and Part 1 of this interview, is episode number 102. Caleb James graduated with Web Development Cohort 46. The first code I wrote was a number guessing game for a TI-83 calculator in 9th grade. The manual showed me how to access a random number generator and the rest was very basic commands I learned by reading through the code of other calculator applications I had. Since then I have incorporated coding into my work and life every chance I get to boost my productivity and reduce redundant activity. I have always enjoyed and had an interest in coding but it wasn't until I was in an accident and in bed for 8 weeks that I learned I really loved building things with code and wanted to take my abilities to the next level. Nashville Software School has provided me with that opportunity in an incredible way. I have learned more in the six months I have attended that I ever thought I would and it has sparked a deep love for the challenge of learning to code.

In our first IRC (Inebriated Reading Challenge) episode we read the cult classic, House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. Mr. Ashleigh Hatter, the expert in weird fiction himself, joins Caleb James for this new weekly reading episode where they'll be discussing their progress of the book and break down all the weird ass things that happen in this novel. Though, novel might be a generous title for what this is. If you are interested in reading the book, this is the perfect jumping on point as the guys spend the episode introducing the work, author, and discussing what they hope to get out of House of Leaves. Years ago, when House of Leaves was first being passed around, it was nothing more than a badly bundled heap of paper, parts of which would occasionally surface on the Internet. No one could have anticipated the small but devoted following this terrifying story would soon command. Starting with an odd assortment of marginalized youth -- musicians, tattoo artists, programmers, strippers, environmentalists, and adrenaline junkies -- the book eventually made its way into the hands of older generations, who not only found themselves in those strangely arranged pages but also discovered a way back into the lives of their estranged children. Now, for the first time, this astonishing novel is made available in book form, complete with the original colored words, vertical footnotes, and newly added second and third appendices. The story remains unchanged, focusing on a young family that moves into a small home on Ash Tree Lane where they discover something is terribly wrong: their house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.Of course, neither Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Will Navidson nor his companion Karen Green was prepared to face the consequences of that impossibility, until the day their two little children wandered off and their voices eerily began to return another story -- of creature darkness, of an ever-growing abyss behind a closet door, and of that unholy growl which soon enough would tear through their walls and consume all their dreams.
In our first Storycast episode, Caleb James reads a short story entitled "The Ocean The World Ignored" by DPW writer, Ashleigh Hatter. "This is for the men and women, for the families and communities and livelihoods that have been lost and forever altered. I can never know how much you’ve lost in these floods, and I know these words won’t fix anything. But I wanted to show you that you aren’t forgotten, your trials are not insignificant, and no matter how hard the media tries to ignore the pain this catastrophe has inflicted on you, I will do my part to make sure your needs are voiced and your stories heard. For all the victims of the 2019 Midwest Flood, we remember you." You can read the story at https://drunkenpenwriting.com/2019/05/25/the-ocean-the-world-ignored/
"It's just in the mixing phase at the moment", enthused Osaka Punch bass player Reggie on their upcoming single. "We recorded it with Caleb James, who has done our last two tracks, and we're just getting it mixed at the Gold Coast so once it's mixed and mastered we'll be releasing it... well the plan is to release it about a week before we start the Cog tour so we're definitely getting some new music out there. We've had the intention of doing all these new tracks and the new album and stuff but then we had tours come up here and there which kind of kept putting everything back. It's good to finally have some time to get into the studio and record the stuff we've got and start getting new stuff out there and start playing some new tunes".In the full interview Reggie goes further into the new single and plans for the next album, discusses their frenetic touring schedule, reveals the mindset of support bands on major tours and gives an insight into the do's and don't's, the bands approach to their music, an in-depth history of the band, an insightful description of his bandmates and more.COG ‘Drawn Together’ 2019 Tour Dates (Melbourne and Brisbane are sold out)With Osaka Punch and The OmnificTickets on sale nowFriday, 8th February 2019The Great Northern, Byron BayTickets: FacebookThursday, 14th February 2019The Triffid, BrisbaneTickets: FacebookFriday, 15th February 2019Max Watts, SydneyTickets: FacebookSaturday, 16th February 2019Max Watts, MelbourneTickets: FacebookFriday, 1st March 2019The Cambridge Hotel, NewcastleTickets: FacebookSaturday, 2nd March 2019Waves, WollongongTickets: FacebookSunday, 3rd March 2019Live Lane Festival, Port MacquarieTickets: Facebook
Chair and tool maker, Caleb James, in this episode's Danish Modern hotseat. A fabulous interview, even if does lead to Ben and Ramon no longer being on speaking terms.
Caleb James was a TV news reporter in Albuquerque NM chasing down stories in front of the camera, had a very public career and it was the job that he had always dreamed of. But the reality of the job was that the stories he found himself exploring were really just him chasing down bad people demanding that they tell him why they were so bad. One day it occurred to him reliant on horrible things happening in his community for his own job security. So he decided to chase the good stories as a Documentary Film Maker but to do that everything in his life had to change. He had to quit his job, leave what was safe and the life that he had built behind and embark on a completely different path. He is now pulling an airstream trailer across the US in search of the good stories under his brand, The Greatest of US.
Caleb James joins us to discuss his next "adventure". He sold all of us stuff, bought a camper and is headed on the road to discover the US of A.
Fresh off of quitting his TV job, and buying an Airstream, Caleb James joins us to discuss his next venture
Lovely to meet Chris and His family, particularly 12 year old Caleb who played the piano after I had tuned it. It is always heartening to find young people like Caleb, showing such a healthy interest in playing an acoustic piano and encouraging to know that he is further enthused that in His own words: "The piano sounds much better now that it has been tuned." Contact us today at: www.tothetuneofpianos.co.uk if you would like us to tune your piano. #EverythingSoundsBetterToTheTuneOfPianos
