Addiction isn't just applicable to a substance use disorder. Often the anxiousness of learning to live life as a griever can lead to overdoing, busyness, workaholism, etc. We can become addicted to being busy in an effort to avoid feeling our feelings. "Keeping Busy" is actually one of the 6 Myths of Grief. In this week's Takeaways & Reflections episode, I reflect on alcohol and the other ways addiction may be impacting life as a griever. I also dig deeper into the energetics of addiction and emotions; sharing about a healing modality in which I recently got trained, too. Shame and guilt are often two emotions associated with addictions of any kind. Participating in behaviors that are used in an effort to avoid only exasperating the guilt and shame that already existed. This cycle continues and makes it that much more difficult to get out of the pattern of addiction. Of course, addiction can become a mental health disorder; however, an important question to ask anyone who is struggling with addiction of any kind is: "What happened to you?" The origin of addiction often can be traced to something that happened, a circumstance, or a situation the person was exposed to long-term. And for so many, memories of pain often stem from childhood. To break the patterns and cycle of addiction, one must be honest with themselves and others, expose the shame and guilt for what it is so the emotion loses its power and grip, and take positive action with support. If you are struggling with addiction, substance use disorder, or another mental health challenge, I've recently added a "Mental Health" resources tab on my website. If you are a Military, Veteran, or First Responder, there's a section just for you as well. Are you healing or just distracted? They say time is a healer but can it also be used as part of an unhealthy coping mechanism? When we experience something painful, our brains do whatever it takes to keep us mentally 'safe' . It can lead us to cling to any sense of balance and normality in our lives at whatever cost. This can of course result in us filling our diaries to the brim so much so that when ample time has passed since the last devastating event in our lives, we avoid the introspective question : "Am I REALLY OK?"If this sounds like you then dive into what was a result of an epic download once I myself had a chance to slow down during what has been an immensely crazy period in my life. --Story-- Rain is pitter pattering against the windows of Avengers Compound, the faint sound of the TV and whatever talk show Nat had flicked on hour ago in an attempt to fill the silence still reaching your ears, their voices an incomprehensible murmur. Your longtime best friend and fellow Avenger clicks away at the keyboard on her desk, evident exhaustion and fatigue clinging to her weary features as the holograms of the remaining members of the Team - scattered across the Universe - appear beside where you sit. The Team meeting is short and sweet and the woman across from you seems to be having quite the trouble keeping her composure - a usual occurrence since Thanos snapped away 50% of the world's population in an instant all those years ago. With a stroke of a key, the meeting ends and the holograms flicker away, once more leaving just you and Nat, your compassionate gaze settling upon her broken features, a folder of reports and other paperwork being absentmindedly flipped through. “You know, if you're about to tell me to look on the bright side…” Natasha pauses, tear-filled gaze wandering to the plate with the half eaten sandwich she'd crafted for lunch previously. “I'm about to hit you in the face with a peanut butter sandwich.” Restraining a soft chuckle, you instead sigh, leaning forward on your elbows slightly, reaching out a hand to squeeze hers. She tosses you a broken, thin-lipped grin, an almost bittersweet look falling upon her features. “I used to have nothing. And then I got this. This job. This family. And I was better because of it.” Sharing a tense nod and another thin smile, you reach towards the CD player perched on the bookshelf nearest you, pressing the play button. And almost instantly, the sound of the disc you and Nat had made together at the beginning of all of this begins to play - drowning out the TV program from the other room and dampening the sound of the rain, almost providing the pair of you with a momentary hope for the future. And indeed, that hope arises a lot sooner than either of you realize... --Info-- I own no rights to any sounds used in this video! I simply just compiled them into this soundscape! Ken Shute is a semi-retired hobby entrepreneur who is currently based on the big island in Hawaii. He has been part of the balloon entertainment industry for 15 years; but, now that he has moved his business from California to Hawaii, he exclusively focuses on designing, sewing, and customizing specialty gear used by balloon artists around the world. In this interview, we talk about how the Covid-19 pandemic has “grounded” many of his entertainer colleagues which has, in turn, affected the demand for Ken's products. During his busy times prior to the shutdown, Ken was often in his spare-bedroom workshop, putting 60 to 80 hours a week into creating and shipping his balloon aprons, bags, and other gear. However, he's had a lot more down time recently and has changed his focus toward raising chickens and adding even more tropical plants to his one-acre Hawaiian farm in paradise. In the past, Ken worked on some large scale and high-profile projects at places such as Universal Studios Hollywood and was able to connect with some big names in the balloon world over the years. We talk about how a lot of those in the “business of fun” are generally good at collaborating and are currently engaging in more virtual balloon jams in order to continue to practice their skills and discuss business strategies. During the pandemic, many are temporarily switching gears from parties and festivals to work-from-home alternatives such as lawn decor and deliveries or focusing more on developing and learning new designs in order to retain their skills during this slow season. Ken has been invited to speak with entertainers at conventions, and he currently runs a Facebook group specifically for those in the balloon industry who are working on their business and marketing strategies. ***** Can't listen right now?
