This week, we're not dead, we're pining for Python! This episode emphasizes that if you only know “Holy Grail”, you are really missing out on the full history, spectrum, and scope of everything those Monty Python boys (and girls! Let's not forget Carol Cleveland and the lovely Aimi MacDonald!) gave us as outrageous comedy from before Flying Circus and since.Today's root beer is IBC. The tremendous Amy Seeley is back and this time the subject is right in her wheelhouse: COMEDY. We talk the legendary work of the absurdly brilliant Monty Python, whose "Flying Circus" and subsequent movies dominated the 70s. We talk our favorite performers, favorite sketches, favorite lines, and favorite movies. We also get into a discussion of their influence, and talk a bit about comedy in general. It's a most excellent 90 minutes, so strap in for something completely different! TUNE IN!
It's been a while, but we're back, and with a new topic - it's Monty Python. We have brief introduction to the 6 main Pythons (and Carol Cleveland) and discuss the concept of Stream of Consciousness comedy with no punchlines, some of our favourite sketches from the first season, the things you definitely couldn't do on TV today, and the impact Monty Python had on comedy. These ones are a bit shorter, so enjoy the brevity

And now for something completely different! Today we are joined by actor, writer and comedian, Anders Yates, to talk about the holy grail of British sketch comedy; MONTY PYTHON. We discover what makes something ‘Pythonesque', which sketches are timeless (and which ones aren't), what Terry Gilliam's incredible animation allowed them to get away with, and how they influenced other sketch groups like Kids In The Hall. Plus, we dig into Carol Cleveland, the unofficial female python, why Anders should see Spamalot and Kyah learns about the Monty Python CD-ROM game. Summer is finally here, so Andy & Martin are off on their hols to Crete to spend some time at Shepherd's Bar in Agios Nickolaos! Back in 1972 The Lotus Eaters was the flagship new BBC2 drama and the first of Michael J. Bird's quartet of Mediterranean-set serials. Starring Ian Hendry and Wanda Ventham, the series focused on the failing marriage of Erik and Ann Shepherd and the lives and loves of the community meeting at their taverna. What no-one expects, including the viewer, is that Ann is a sleeper agent who is about to be activated, nor that despite this revelation such a development is not always going to be the focus of the show. Instead Bird's serial is about anyone who is running from something, looking for a place to start again and the threat that if you eat the fruit of the lotus you will never leave... As well as Bird, the scripts were written by David Weir, David Fisher and Jack Ronder. The series was directed by Cyril Coke, Douglas Camfield, David Cunliffe and Viktors Ritelis, and produced by Anthony Read and Michael Glynn The Lotus Eaters was a new direction for UK TV drama which helped the package holiday market no end. Notably, it would find itself to be life imitating art, as Ian Hendry, just like Erik Shepherd, continued his battles with drink, love and life. With numerous other excellent regular and guest actors - Stefan Gryff, Sylvia Coleridge, Thorley Walters, Carol Cleveland, Maurice Denham, Susan Engel, Timothy Carlton, Anouska Hempel, Godfrey James, Alethea Charlton, John Savident and Julia Goodman - this Cretan-set series is a fascinating exploration of love, motivation, trust, deceit and spying, with a large side order of raki. So it's time to get you swimsuit on, slap on some lotion and get in the back garden. Put this in your ears for a couple of hours and float back in time to the Seventies. Next Time: Moonbase 3
Your marketing budget is limited. It might even be bare bones. And, believe it or not, that could be a really good thing for you. Here's the thing about limitations: they inspire creativity. Limited resources force you to figure out how to take advantage of what you have in order to create the most impact. When you lean into those choices, you can create something stylistically unique and compelling – and become the stuff marketing legends (and Remarkable episodes) are made of.On this episode of Remarkable, we're taking lessons from one of the most iconic scenes in Monty Python and the Holy Grail: the coconut scene – aka the very first scene of the movie. For those who haven't seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the movie opens with the distant sound of a galloping horse heard through thick fog. But what emerges from the fog is not a horse. It's King Arthur skipping around on foot. His squire Patsy is following him, rhythmically knocking a pair of coconut shells together to mimic a horse's trot. There's a reason this knight is using coconuts to stand in for a horse: the film couldn't afford real horses. Instead, they improvised one of the funniest scenes in film history. They grabbed a couple of coconuts and knocked them together to sound like the gallop of a horse. This absurd yet brilliant idea is just one of the many reasons Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a cult classic. Today, we're going to show you how you can embrace your own limitations – and hopefully create a cult following of your own.About Monty Python and the Holy GrailMonty Python and the Holy Grail is a 1975 low budget British comedy that satirizes the legend of King Arthur. It stars the Monty Python comedy troupe in key roles: Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, John Cleese, Michael Palin, and Eric Idle. Carol Cleveland and Sandy Johnson also star in the film. Gilliam and Jones directed the movie, and Gilliam also did the animation and artwork. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Monty Python and the Holy Grail: Acknowledge your limitations and brainstorm creative ways to work around them. Don't dwell on your limitations. Embrace them! Think outside the box about how you can tell your story with what you have. Monty Python thought WAY outside the box with their coconut solution, but it worked – and according to co-director Terry Gilliam, it even helped set the stage for the film: "We would never have got through that movie with real horses,” he said. “It makes a wonderful leap, because with that opening shot you accept the kind of lunatic logic that's there." Caspian team member Dane Eckerle gives us another example from his work producing an independent film:“We could only afford stunt coordinators on a certain amount of days, which meant that a lot of the action needed to get consolidated into those days. But we wanted the action that we did have to look really good, and we didn't want to have to stretch ourselves too thin trying to cram in 50 stunts in two days. So we decided to do 10 stunts really, really well in those two days. Then we leaned into the emotion of it. And so instead of showing the action, we captured the first part of the action. And the cameras slowly push into the character's face, and you hear the carnage.” - Dane Eckerle, Producer, and Head of Development at CaspianDemonstrate self-awareness about your workaround. Emphasize your workaround to let your audience know that it was truly a choice, not some mistake or half-baked idea. They'll feel like they're in on your secret, and it can help create audience awareness as well. For the premiere of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the comedy group advertised that they would give out free coconuts to the first thousand people who bought tickets. The next morning, fans were lined up as early as 5:30 in the morning to get their hands on a coconut!Quotes*“I just feel like when you have the money, when you have all the resources - and this isn't to say that big movies or big commercials or big marketing campaigns are bad, but there's no limitations. There's no box that you're put in that breeds a new level of creativity or outside-the-box thinking. It's just, you do what you can or what's been done before, or what you can afford, which is anything. I think it robs a little bit of that DIY scrappy thinking. You lose a little bit of that inventiveness when you have it all. It's easier to stand out from the crowd if you're embracing your limitations.” - Dane Eckerle*”'Do more with less' is really interesting to me because it implies two things. Number one, that you need to do more. So, you need to push the boundaries of what you have done in the past. So if you had a million dollar budget and you achieved X results, now you need to surpass what you used to do. And then the second piece is that you have less to do it with, which means you have less physical dollars that you can invest.' - Ian Faison*”When you don't look at it realistically and just go, ‘Okay, this is what we got and this is how we're gonna have to work with it,' When you fight the tide, it actually ends up looking bad. Like if you try and stretch something and make something that you really don't have any business making, everyone can feel it.” - Dane EckerleTime Stamps[2:02] Why are we covering Monty Python and the Holy Grail?[2:52] Tell me more about Monty Python and the Holy Grail[4:02] Learn more about the making of the movie[5:59] Where did the financing of Monty Python and the Holy Grail come from?[8:20] Exactly how tight was the budget for this movie?[9:28] Why did the troupe use coconuts for the horse sound effects?[12:30] How do you manage being on a super tight budget?[17:22] How does a tight budget affect creative decisions in videos or movies?[21:25] How do you apply this to B2B marketing?[28:23] How does NY-based clothing company Minted embrace their limitations?[31:21] How does Bionic do more with less on their glassboard videos?LinksWatch “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”Check out Minted New York on TikTokTake a look at Bionic's glassboard videosFollow Alex Willis and see the studio Caspian Studios helped him build for Leadership SurgeAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. After talking about some smaller films lately, the guys talk about what may be the most popular film on the entire list - Monty Python's Life of Brian. Along with the endless quotable dialogue, the guys also discuss the beautiful production design that elevates said comedy, a dicey scene in regards to trans representation, the left-wing political satire that compares to modern-day American government, all of the blasphemy accusations hurled at the film at the time and more. Plus: everyone learns all about 'tall poppy' syndrome. The guys also roll the dice to find out what they'll be watching next week. Join us, won't you? In what is certainly the most comedically inclined Extra Milestone yet, I am joined by my very close personal friend Tyler Chambers to discuss a pair of classics within the genre. We begin with a lengthy rundown of Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam’s 1975 cult favorite Monty Python and the Holy Grail, complete with behind-the-scenes stories, details we’ve noticed over the years, our personal experiences with the movie, analyses of the film’s comedic stylings, and revisits of our favorite sequences. Then we move on to John Landis’s 1980 musical road comedy The Blues Brothers. We discuss the film’s story structure, cast, presentation, and deadpan sense of humor, as well as how all of those things compare and contrast surprisingly well with Holy Grail. Afterward, we both give a recommendation to pair with each movie, some much more unexpected than others! NOTE: Due to a variety of unfortunate technical errors, the sound quality of this episode is a bit worse than usual. Sorry about that! This week, Jason presents his Brit Pick in the form of Monty Python and the Holy Grail and all its quotable silliness. The guys debate which Monty Python film should go on the list, they sing the praises of the unheralded Carol Cleveland, discuss the reason why huge rock stars like Elton John were attracted to the project, talk about the brilliant way in which the film utilizes its relatively small budget and much more. There's also some pretty serious discussion about all the annoying university bros who would quote this movie ALL. THE. TIME. Next week: Brit Picks concludes with an older request from a listener on Twitter - the guys will be discussing Guy Ritchie's comeback (?) film The Gentlemen. Chasing the Supernatural- Haunt ME is a web series focusing on haunted or supposedly haunted Maine locations. Our team goes in to learn about the history of the place and then investigates to see if there is any validity to the claims. We use a variety of equipment and techniques to make this determination, and each one of our members has a specific style or job so we are sure that we can cover all bases. Our show is very much like a TV show in that we have episodes that will air each week after our premiere date, but this release will occur online. We are very excited to be a part of the online web series community, which is an exciting new way to experience programs. We have four investigators who appear in our episodes. They each have a specific job title and you will see them working on related tasks throughout each episode. They are Ashley Brooks (group leader), Carol Cleveland (manesologist), Ty Gowen (audio analyst/location scout), and Katie Webb (occultist). We have a dedicated crew that works diligently to make our episodes and adventures possible. The tech team includes the talents of Nick Nordfors, Mike Strout, Krista Bertalan, Erin Cross, Johnny Speckman, Anna Halloran, and Charlie Widdis.
