In this episode, we dive deep into the life and career of the brilliant Caroline Aherne, a comedic genius who left a huge mark on British television. Known for her sharp wit, unique characters, and a deeply personal connection to her work, Caroline's career spanned everything from stand-up comedy to groundbreaking television shows. We'll take a closer look at her rise to fame, her iconic roles, and the cultural impact she had on the comedy landscape. Caroline first captured the public's attention with her character Mrs. Merton, the sweet yet biting elderly talk show host who charmed audiences with her deceptively innocent interviews. We'll explore the most memorable parts of The Mrs. Merton Show, which became a household favorite in the 1990s. Her ability to blend humor with warmth made her a standout figure in a male-dominated industry, and this episode delves into how she used her comedy to subtly challenge social norms and power dynamics. Beyond Mrs. Merton, Caroline Aherne co-created and starred in the beloved sitcom The Royle Family, a show that redefined British comedy with its portrayal of an ordinary, working-class family. We discuss how Caroline's writing and performance in the series broke away from traditional sitcom tropes, opting for a more subtle, observational style that resonated with millions. The show's focus on the mundane, everyday lives of its characters struck a chord with viewers and is considered one of the greatest British sitcoms of all time. However, Caroline's life wasn't without its struggles. In this episode, we also touch on her personal battles with health issues, alcoholism, and her retreat from the public eye at various points in her career. Despite these challenges, Caroline continued to create groundbreaking work that spoke to the heart of British culture.  From her influence on future comedians to the timeless quality of her work, Caroline Aherne's contributions to the industry remain. Join us as we honour her life, her laughter, and the profound impact she made on British television. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. It's a 'Red Letter Day' here in the Good Listening To Show 'Clearing', as I welcome a personal comedy hero to the Show!  Delighted to welcome Charles Murray Higson - aka Charlie Higson - born in 1958 in Frome and billed as "That man off of The Fast Show" and credited by The Daily Mail as being both "An idiot and a disgrace!"Charlie is life-long comedy foil of the likes of Paul Whitehouse,  Mark Williams, John Thompson, Arabella Wier (& the now sadly departed Caroline Aherne) who together make up the splendid ensemble and co-creators of the iconic British TV Comedy Classic, "The Fast Show". Within a week of our recording together "The Fast Show" is all set to go on a smash-hit SOLD OUT tour of the UK as a stage-show. (And listen as a little bit of wee comes out (!) as Charlie offers me a ticket on the Guest list, when The Fast Show comes to Bristol! He'll definitely be getting an email!)Charlie Higson is a an extremely talented polymath. He is a prolific Author, including 5 of the "Young Bond" series, having been commissioned by the Fleming Foundation to take up the mantle) He is also an Actor, Comedian & Podcaster. His Podcast "Willy Willy Harry Stee" is Charlie's History of the English Monarchy, inspired by the mnemonic verse which he rote learned and remembers from school. It's quite a "Fast Show" (see what I'm doing there?!) as there's quite a lot to talk about! This is what AI thinks we talked about!Have you ever wondered what stirs in the mind of a comedy genius? Picture this: Charlie Higson, a man of many creative masks, sits down with us and, with a wit as sharp as a scalpel, slices open the belly of the creative beast. He regales us with tales from the upcoming "Fast Show" tour, sharing how "Painting with Johnny" and other beloved characters are shortly to be resurrected night-after-night to the joy of sold-out crowds.Charlie doesn't just tickle our funny bones; he delves into his diverse trajectory - from punk rocker to actor to the man who breathes new life into the world of James Bond, both young and old. It's not all fun and games, though. Well, maybe it is – but with a hefty dash of nostalgia and reverence. Charlie pays homage to the comedic titans who paved his path, the likes of Monty Python, and admits that their imprint on his humor is as indelible as ink. He recounts the serendipity of meeting Paul Whitehouse, a kindred spirit in jest, at university and how it shaped their dynamic comedy duo. Even the bittersweet distraction of social media gets a nod, as Charlie admits to its allure, while also recognizing its role in today's narrative tapestry. You can also Watch/Listen to Charlie's wonderful episode here:https://vimeo.com/chrisgrimes/charliehigsonTune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. It's a very different skyline to the one John came to love as a child growing up in Ancoats during the 50's and 60's. John, who was one of 14, was born and raised on George Leigh street. He jokingly describes his childhood as “feral', but with lots of love, pets and community. Hear how John made the transition from bin man to respected character actor; what it was like working alongside Craig Cash and Caroline Aherne and how a role in The Royal Family led to him epitomising everyone's pub landlord in iconic series Early Doors. You'll also get a great insight into Manchester history from someone who's seen that area of the city experience dramatic change. ------Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre. From that point, the business, and its team members, have been involved in helping to support the creation of Modern Manchester – across regeneration, business, charity, leisure and hospitality, sport and culture. To celebrate the 26 years that Roland Dransfield has spent creating these bonds, Lisa is gathering together some of her Greater Mancunian ‘family' and will be exploring how they have created their own purposeful relationships with the best place in the world.Connect with Lisa and Roland Dransfield: Via our websiteOn InstagramOn TwitterOn Spotify

ITV launches a brand new and innovative game show which offered, for the first time, contestants the chance to win the biggest cash prize ever given away on British television. One Million Pounds! Hosted by Chris Tarrant, Matt and Luke uncover the first episode of the series to see how it compares to the show which is still running on ITV and across the world in different versions, and why it became such a phenomenon in the late '90s.Meanwhile on BBC2, Caroline Aherne, still riding high from the success of Mrs. Merton, joins forces with colleague and close friend Craig Cash to quietly revolutionise the 'sitcom' with The Royle Family. On ITV, the autumn drama season launches with Supply and Demand. To be fair, the show from accalimed writer Lynda La Plante, actually had a pilot episode the year before in 1997, but in 1998 it launched properly. Largely forgotten, the series follows a team tasked with stopping illegal drugs from getting into the UK. Starring Larry Lamb, Martin Kemp and with a truly bizarre lead performance from Miriam Margolyes, is the show actually good or does it serve as an interesting look at a particular era of British drama?Lastly, a show that had a show that had BIG impact when it launched in the US and on Channel 4 in the UK. But has David E. Kelley's legal drama Ally McBeal aged well and why has it faded from the conversation 25 years after its debut? 5 hours ago

It's often said that you shouldn't meet your heroes. So it was with some trepidation that I went down to Brighton one rainy day in January to meet Henry Normal.Henry's name always used to pop up on the credits of some of my favourite TV shows. Paul Calf's Video Diaries, Mrs Merton, The Royle Family, The Mighty Boosh … I could go on.But I needn't have worried about meeting him. Henry's a lovely man.And his creative endeavours extend even beyond those TV classics. He's a poet, a writer and someone who thinks a lot about creativity, the world and our place in it.Our conversation begins with his early life in the slums of Nottingham. He tells me how Jack Benny and Dean Martin got him thinking about a life beyond the narrow streets of St Anne's. He tells me what it was like to write with Steve Coogan and Caroline Aherne, and there are some great stories about the making of Mrs Merton and the Royle Family. And we talk about Henry's son, Johnny and how he inspired Henry to return to poetry after a break of 20 years.I tried really hard to get this conversation down to under an hour. I really did. But there was just too much good stuff to let go.There's laughter and there's tears.I hope you enjoy my conversation with Henry Normal.

LOOK OUT! It’s only Films To Be Buried With! Join your host Brett Goldstein as he talks life, death, love and the universe with the powerful and brilliant comedian KIRI PRITCHARD-McLEAN!A very timely episode, this one, probably one of the most timely of them all so far, short of doing and entirely live and in real time one… The first Films To Be Buried With to be recorded remotely, Brett is joined online by Kiri to get into this whole ever-fascinating cinema and life thing. And get into they very much do, while certainly not avoiding the subject at hand and the reason for the isolation… Do I need to mention it? I think you understand. It came out lovely though, and it’s a really interesting energy which you’ll certainly enjoy when compared to the regular face to face episodes. It’s really unique. So please do expect to hear about “that thing” (to invoke Lauryn Hill), tour cancellations, social media usage in times of quarantine, the Caroline Aherne bursary, dealing with parents / parental management, techniques for hiding tears, not being good with scary films, the joy of Christmas and why it remains within her, and her folks over in Wales. Oh but come on you KNOW that’s the tip of the iceberg. Whatever your current situation, from all of us here at Films To Be Buried With, we wish you nothing but the best of health and sanity in the current environment. I mean, we do anyway. But especially now. Welcome (((welcome))) (((welcome))) (used an echo on that one) to PART 2 of DRUNKCAST PART 4 which is EPISODE 107 of the Distraction Pieces podcast! Enough with the numbers. Let's get into it. A pretty powerful and actually rather sobering talk about suicide straight off the bat, which is ultimately uplifting and very honest and refreshing, which melts into topics including Caroline Aherne and how she touched on the UK's funny/thoughtful/melancholy nerve so well, film talk in general, Chris's fictional dog (classic material) and a charming tale involving the all engulfing force which is Jedward. All will be revealed. Top up and get in. *slight misophonia warning - items get crunched at various points so stick it out, it's not that bad...
