Our palliative care system may be waning as demand grows, prompting a push for action. We've fallen from third in the world in palliative care access ten years ago, to 12th place. An article in the New Zealand Medical Journal finds we have less than a third of the recommended number of specialists per capita, and many are nearing retirement. Author Dr Catherine D'Souza told Mike Hosking that we lack the funding to train more specialists, despite having ample opportunity and space to do so. She says that the number of people dying is going to double in the next thirty years, and if we don't take action quickly, already struggling health services are going to struggle even more and fall apart. Today, I want to tell you about the retreat I had a few weekends ago. I felt like I would have more people at this retreat than last year. I did have many more people I invited who said they were interested in coming. However, most said they wanted to go but could not make it for the weekend that I booked the retreat house. Three weeks before the retreat, I asked the retreat director, Nancy, a question, and at that time, I only had four people signed up. She told me that she could not pay her staff to come in for just four people. I totally understood this and yet was devastated that I may have to cancel the retreat.Nancy was super sweet and said that I could still use the retreat house to have the retreat, I would just need to provide the food. She said she would reduce the amount of money that I needed to pay to use the retreat house and that she and her husband would take care of reheating the food, picking up takeout, or helping with whatever we decided to do for food for the weekend. She said she didn't want me to have to cancel on those who had already signed up. I prayed about it and felt like the Lord still wanted me to have the retreat, even if it was just for four people.Over the course of the next few weeks, I had four more people sign up, so we were up to 8. Then, two of them had things come up, and they were unable to come. We were down to 6, but with me, that was seven, and I thought that was an ok number. I had wanted more to come, but I understood that people had things going on that weekend. About a week before the retreat, I talked with a friend of mine, and she said she was able to come. This brought us up to 8, including myself. I thought that was a pretty good number. Then, the Wednesday before, another friend asked if she could come. She said she didn't originally sign up because she needed to cover for someone at church, but that person came home from her trip early, and she was free to come. Then, on Friday morning, another friend called up and asked if it was too late for her to come. She really needed a retreat weekend and was wondering if she could come. I checked with the retreat house, and Nancy said it was not a problem. So, the final count was 10 of us at the retreat. I thought this number was small, but those in attendance were happy that there weren't too many people because it meant they didn't have to be nervous spending the weekend with 40 other women that they didn't know. They all got to know each other pretty well. By the end of the weekend, they were hugging each other, exchanging numbers and Facebook profiles, and promising to keep in touch. It was such a great weekend, and it was really great to see the beginning of what I know will be some amazing friendships. I think that is part of the magic of retreat. There are so many nice parts about the retreat: the talks, the activities, and the food, but one of the best is the fellowship with others going through the same kind of stuff. We may not all be going through the exact same stuff, but we are all going through stuff, and to get the opportunity to spend a weekend with other people who are going through stuff and who also love Jesus is a great thing!Remember above when I said Nancy said I could still use the retreat house, but I would need to provide the food? I was trying to think of what I should do for food. I thought maybe I could do takeout, like pizza and pasta, or maybe grinders. However, now there were ten people, and takeout would get expensive. And what would I order that everyone would like? I decided it would be good to do casseroles. This way, I could make them ahead of time throughout the week, and it wouldn't be a lot of work for Nancy and her husband. They could just put them in the oven to reheat them.I spoke with my sister Liz, who is a master party planner. Well, her day job is as a counselor, but her passion is party planning, and she is so good at it. She also loves meal planning and meal prep. She said she could come over the weekend before, and we could make stuff and freeze it. She and another sister, Dee, came over the Sunday before, and we made four quiche, two nondairy egg casseroles, beef stew, chicken noodle soup, and two ranch chicken and potato casseroles. It was amazing because it only took a few hours, and yet we had both days of breakfast taken care of; we had one dinner and one lunch taken care of. I had decided the other dinner would be a chicken and stuffing casserole that I couldn't make in advance because it is not great to freeze stovetop stuffing. I was also going to cook up some hamburger meat for the second lunch so we could have tacos. What seemed like it was going to be really difficult turned out to be really easy, and everyone ended up really happy with the food. When it finally came time for the actual retreat, it was amazing! Everyone hit a lot of traffic, so we started late, and yet no one seemed to mind. We started with introductions, and then we ate dinner together. Over the course of the weekend, I gave four talks on the theme's topic, which was “Come as you Are,” and then I gave two other talks. One was on the reckless love God has for us, and one was on how endless God's forgiveness is. We also had some free time, Confession and Mass were also available for those who wanted to go. We did an illuminated Rosary where we had tea light candles laid out in the formation of rosary beads, and we lit each candle, well, turned each candle on, as we said each prayer. It was beautiful. We also had three people who were healed of pain during the retreat. My sister's back had been hurting her the whole car ride to retreat and for the whole night at retreat. She mentioned it before going to be, so I asked if I could pray over her for healing. She agreed, and God healed all the pain in her back. She was able to go to sleep with no pain, and it did not return. Another woman had fallen several months ago and hurt her elbow. She also had a brace on her wrist because she was told it was bone on bone in her wrist. I asked if I could pray over her for healing, and she said yes. After a few minutes of prayer, God took away some of her wrist pain. She was hesitant to move the wrist too much to test if it was pain-free because if she moved it a certain way, it was pretty painful. However, 30 minutes later, she was moving it all around pain-free! Hallelujah, God is so good!!Finally, my niece was also on retreat. She came up to me on Sunday morning and said that she needed me to pray over her foot. She said it had been sore for several weeks now, and it wasn't going away. She was wearing support in her shoe, and that was helping, but she just wanted the pain gone. It was funny, too, because when I pray using the Encounter Ministries model, I always begin by asking them to ask Jesus if He wants to heal them. When I asked her, she didn't even hesitate. She immediately said, “Yes, I know He wants to heal me. He said it's time to end this,” or something like that. She was so confident God would heal her, and I thought that was such a beautiful thing. I prayed for a few minutes over her foot, and then she walked around to test it out. The pain was gone. Her foot was healed. It was amazing and wonderful. She was so happy! We all just marveled at how good God was throughout the whole weekend. Several of the ladies said that they had breakthroughs while they were journaling through the various info they learned on retreat.God is so good. If you have never been to a retreat, I invite you to find one and to go. I know many of us think retreats are just for holy people. Yet, the reality is they are for everyday people who love the Lord and just want to have some time away from other people who love the Lord. Regardless of what the retreat topic is or what is planned for the retreat, just that time away from life where you can focus on God is enough to make it worth it. Give it a try, what have you got to lose? I hope you will consider joining me on my next retreat. I will keep you posted on when that is. I am hoping to find somewhere to have one in the springtime. www.findingtruenorthcoaching.comCLICK HERE TO DONATECLICK HERE to sign up for Mentoring CLICK HERE to sign up for Daily "Word from the Lord" emailsCLICK HERE to sign up for my newsletter & receive a free audio training about inviting Jesus into your daily lifeCLICK HERE to buy my book Total Trust in God's Safe Embrace
Today I decided I would do the Witness Wednesday as it has been a while since I have done one and God has definitely been working in my life. I think it is just as important to talk about the little ways God is working in our lives as it is to talk about the big ways He is working in our lives. Today I will give you an update on how I can see Him blessing me and my life.First, I will start with Noah going off to school. Noah applied to schools pretty late in the year compared to when I remember applying to schools. He also didn't apply to a lot of schools. He knew where he wanted to go, so he just applied to a handful of schools. Noah's dream was to go overseas, and so most of the schools he applied to were in the United Kingdom. (England, Scotland, & Wales). Noah decided to go to Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland. He found this out at the beginning of June. This meant we had three months to get all of the stuff in order so he could get there on time.Going to school in another country is a lot of work, at least initially. We had so many hoops to jump through. We had to do all the regular stuff like find a place to live and register. However, it just seemed so much harder than I remember it being. He also needed to do things I didn't have to do when I went to school in the states, like get a visa. It was a long and tiring procedure, but the Lord was with us through all of it.For instance by the time we figured everything out and were able to apply for his visa it was August 14th. However they said the visa could take up to 15 working days to come in. If it took 15 working days then he wouldn't be able to arrive in country until his first day of classes. This would have been ok, but he would likely have missed at least one day of classes while we got him settled in. However, thanks to the Lord, and the good people at the passport place, we got his visa back in about one week. We were not able to buy plane a plane ticket until we had it back. So once it came were were able to find pretty affordable tickets as well.I got to go with Noah to get him settled into school. I was nervous about leaving Noah in another country where he didn't know anyone. I am sure most moms feel this way when their kids go off to school. However, I had the added worry of it being in another country. Thanks to the Lord, I was able to mostly focus on the fact that this was an awesome adventure for Noah and that he was going to have such a great time. However, I still hated that he was all alone. The second day we were there we went to their “Walmart” like store where they have a post office. We had to go here to try and pick up Noah's residency permit. While we were shopping around we met another student there. He happened to also be going to Napier. He and Noah talked and they are both engineering majors. Not the same type of engineering, but that meant they would both be walking to the same campus from their dorms. They also found out of all the doors they have at Napier they would be living in the same building, just one floor apart. It was pretty cool! We also met his parents and exchanged info. Now, suddenly I wasn't doing all of this alone. They were there to help along the way. We both sent text messages at the end of the day with what we had accomplished that day and any new information we found out. It was super helpful. Thank you Lord.Noah moved into his dorm on a Saturday and I went home on Monday morning. Saturday morning we took and Uber over to the dorm and moved his clothes and stuff he brought from home in. Then we spend the day shopping and getting the rest of what he needed. Then we went out and got some food also as he is living in an apartment and there is no meal plan there. The next day we went to lunch and more grocery shopping. Then I had to say goodbye. That was hard, and yet I know the Lord is with Him and that this is going to be an amazing year for him, and I am so excited for all he will get to experience.Next I want to tell you all about my new jobs. It is funny how the Lord works, because I knew this fall was going to be some kind of breakthrough. I knew something was going to change, I just didn't know what. I had been praying about going back to work outside of the home. I decided I would go back to substitute teaching a few days a week. It would be a way where I could help contribute to the family income more than I have been and with Noah in school and Sam having his license, I only really have to drive Ryan around these days. One morning I was out to breakfast with a friend of mine and she mentioned she was looking to hire more coaches at her job. She told me about the job and it sounded great. I would be coaching people with autism. It was perfect for me as I love coaching and I love helping people. It felt like an answer to prayers as I really didn't want to give up coaching and get having your own coaching practice takes a lot of time to build and over the last few years I decided I wanted to spend more time with the kids while they were still at home with me. This was perfect because I still get to coach but I don't have to find my own clients. This means I will have more time to spend with my family.I was excited about both of these jobs and felt like the Lord had really taken care of all my needs. I did feel like I would still like to do some more ministry type work but that I would figure that out once both my jobs started and I could see how much time I would have left. I begin my coaching job in two weeks, so we will see what kind of time commitment that is. It is supposed to be 5-20 hours of coaching per week, but depending on how much I am driving it could be more than that. I was happy with how things were going. One day out of the blue a friend from my Encounter Ministries class reached out and said she had a possible job offer if I was interested in hearing more about it. She said it would be working with women who have a homeless ministry. They live together and go out and do this ministry together. Their is a priest that overseas the ministry, however, they were looking for a woman who could be like a house mom or a spiritual mother to these young women. I was so excited when I heard about this opportunity. I love helping people along on their spiritual journey and I love that they do homeless ministry as the Lord has put that on my heart as well.I talked with my friend all about it and then she passed my name onto the priest in charge. He gave me a call and we both felt like it would be a great opportunity for me and for the young women. I wondered it if would be too much with the jobs I had just taken and the priest said he was thinking about 3 hours per week. It sounded perfect. One of my passions is healing ministry. I am sure if you have listened to several of my podcast episodes you have heard me talk about healing in one way or another. The priest said he is going to do a study with the ladies in the home using the Bob Shutes “Be Healed” prayer model. This is about healing the whole self. I read the book for my Encounter Ministries quarter on inner healing and it was amazing. So, not only do I get to do what I love, which is walk spiritually with these women, but I also get to sit in on this study and learn more about healing. God is so good. He knew not only what I need, to stay coaching and yet make money, but also what I longed for, which is to walk with people on their spiritual journey. The last thing I want to witness to is what happened when I was lucky enough to meet these women on Monday. They invited me into their home for evening prayer, mass, dinner, and the start of the Bob Shutes video series. It was such a beautiful time and these ladies are so kind and caring. They made me feel so warm and welcomed. They were happy to see me and that felt so great! They didn't even know me and yet were so so kind. After dinner was over while they were clearing the dishes somehow we got on the topic of healing. I mentioned how I prayed over my aunt and the Lord healed the pain in her foot. One of the ladies said she had just been thinking about the pain in her foot and asked if I would pray sometime for her. I told her we could do it before I left. Another one of the ladies said the doctor just confirmed that she had a sprained ligament in her left wrist. It was funny to me as it was the same sort of pain that my son Ryan is having in his left wrist.First I prayed over her foot. I prayed for just a minute or two and asked her what she was feeling. She said tingling in her hands. I asked her to move her foot around, to walk on it and see if there was any change. She said the pain was gone. She was in awe at the power of God. She really couldn't believe it was gone. She said it was a really weird feeling. Next, I prayed over the sprained wrist. I prayed for a few minutes and asked what she was feeling. She was honest and said she was feeling skepticism in her heart. I asked if she wanted to renounce that the spirit of doubt and she said yes. then I ask if anything else was coming up. She renounced the belief that Jesus didn't care about something as little as her sprained wrist. I asked her to ask Jesus where He was right now, and she felt like He said, “in your wrist.” I asked her to test out her wrist. To move it around in the way that previously hurt her. She did and the pain was completely gone. She was in awe, all the ladies were. It was so hard to believe that God cares about our little pains as it wasn't super painful. Both ladies said the pain was about a four out of ten. So, not unbearable and yet, when we ask God, He answers. It was such an amazing experience meeting these ladies and getting to spend a few hours with them. In just a few hours I could tell what extraordinary women they all are. I could see Christ shining through them and I could see how much the love the Lord. I am not sure what is in store for me and these ladies and yet I know I will be seeing them again and that God has something amazing planned for all of us. I can see that He is blessing their ministry and blessing them and it is beautiful.I hope when you hear this you can see how God as working in all of this. I hope this helps you see how God is working in your life as well. It doesn't have to be in big ways, like getting to witness God healing. It can be in the little things, like getting the visa back in time so we could get plane tickets so Noah could be there for the start of classes. I am grateful for all the ways God is working in my life. There have been so many things even just over the last few months. I will do another witness Wednesday soon, as I have forgotten how great it feels to look back over your life and see all the ways God is working in it. He is such a good good father. What isn't counted doesn't count. And mainstream institutions systematically fail to account for feminicide, the gender-related killing of women and girls, including cisgender and transgender women. Against this failure, Counting Feminicide: Data Feminism in Action (MIT Press, 2024) brings to the fore the work of data activists across the Americas who are documenting such murders—and challenging the reigning logic of data science by centering care, memory, and justice in their work. Drawing on Data Against Feminicide, a large-scale collaborative research project, Catherine D'Ignazio describes the creative, intellectual, and emotional labor of feminicide data activists who are at the forefront of a data ethics that rigorously and consistently takes power and people into account. A fearsome feminist movemnet has sprung up in response to an epidemic of feminicide in South America, achieving change thanks in large part to an innovative data activism campaign. Cathering D'Ignazio of the Data + Feminism Lab at MIT wrote a wonerful book that doesn't just chronicle the movement, but acts as a handbook for using data in fights for justice.

We have all seen God working in our lives, however, we might not all be aware it is God who is working in our lives. This is why it is so important we start talking about it more. The more we share our experiences, the more people understand how God works and how much He truly loves us. If you would be willing to share any experience you have had of how God has worked or is working your life, please email me at catherine@findingtruenorthcoaching.com or just click here. It won't take up much of your time, and your story could be just the story that someone needs to hear today. Prayerfully consider sharing. Everyone has a story, and the world needs to hear them. I look forward to spending time with you again tomorrow, and I will have another witness for you next Wednesday. Remember, Jesus loves you, and so do I. Have a blessed day!

Pharmac is about to run out of a crucial pain relief drug. The drug-buying agency was warned two years ago the Pfizer factory producing one-milligram liquid morphine is closing. But it hasn't found a replacement before New Zealand's supplies run out next month. Analgesic Advisory Committee member Catherine D'Souza says Pfizer promised to help find alternatives, but didn't. "Which is really disappointing. So then Pharmac looks at opening a competitive process asking for companies to apply to provide New Zealand with this product, but there were no bids at all." A Pfizer spokesperson issued the following statement: "The transfer of sponsorship of RA-Morph was Friday 22 September and supply was available from Bridgewest on Monday 9 October. Pfizer and Bridgewest worked cooperatively to ensure continuity of supply to customers in New Zealand was maintained in the interim. Pfizer has been in regular communication with Pharmac on medicines supplied from the Perth site. Following the decision to exit the Perth site (the site was divested in April 2023 and purchased by Bridgewest Group - the sale having closed on 4 April 2023), it was also decided to discontinue the manufacturing of RA-Morph and its supply in New Zealand. In the interest of patients, and to ensure that the market had lead-time to seek alternative means of supply, a discontinuation notice was given to Pharmac with two years' notice in September 2021." During tear down at Wasteland Weekend 2023, I had the chance to sit down with the Dukes of the Nuke's neighbors that go by the Dauntless eXpress Corp. You may know them as the tribe behind the Forlorn Hope Saloon, the giant Wasteland Weekend Event Map, and the Tribe Events and Missions Boards. And this year they hosted the brand new 'Barter Hole' community space. Gather around as we discuss WW23, and all the things that happen inside this shady saloon. Today I want to witness about how the Lord can sometimes work in our lives. I went to a retreat in January with some of my big life mentoring sisters. There were about 20 of us there. We spent the time doing cool things like running in the ocean first thing in the morning and dressing in 80s gear and doing jazzercise at a local restaurant. I had not met most of these people before. Aside from the cool activities planned we also spent some time talking about what was going on in our lives and where we wanted to be at the end of the year. This wasn't easy as many of us had never met and sharing the intimate details of our lives was scary. Although once people started sharing their stories the strangest thing happened, we realized even though we were all very different, we were also the same in a lot of ways. It was a great experience.A month or so after the retreat I was talking to one of my new friends from the retreat. We were talking about our mentoring group and the various retreats our mentor Pamela Crim does and my friend said she could see me doing something like that, mentoring and putting on retreats. The seed was planted. I was trying to figure out where to go with my business.I had thought about this type of thing before, but hearing someone else say she could see me doing it made it all see a bit more real. I tend to be a slow mover. I get an idea and I talk myself out of it for quite awhile. Do you ever do this? You come up with an idea and then don't act on it because that inside voice tells you a million reasons why it won't work? One day I was at Eucharistic Adoration and I felt like the Holy Spirit told me I needed to plan a retreat for this summer. So of course I obeyed and started planning right away, right? Wrong. I did what I always do when the Holy Spirit directs me to do something. I asked a bunch of questions. Here are some of those questions: “This summer, are you sure? This summer is in just a few months. Who will even come to this retreat?” I felt as if the Holy Spirit said, “You just book a place and time and I will get the people there.” “Ok I said, but what about the theme of the retreat, what do you want us to do there? What will I talk about? Will I be the only speaker?” Again I felt I heard the Holy Spirit say, “Once you book the place I will give you more details.”I really felt as if the Holy Spirit was wanting me to step out in faith. I started to call retreat centers to see if there was anyone who had availability this close to summer. Most places did not and the ones that did were too expensive. I wasn't sure who would be attending but I knew I wanted to make it affordable for all. The price was going to be at least $400 at the places I was finding. I was getting frustrated and wanted to give up. I felt the Holy Spirit prompt me to email my prayer group and see if any of the would want to go on a retreat and if $400 was too expensive.I also asked if they even wanted a sleepover retreat. Maybe I should just do a daytime retreat or a one day retreat. Many said yes to a retreat most said stay over retreat which I felt confirmed what I felt I was getting from the Holy Spirit. A few said they could go if it were $400, however many said it was too much, again confirming my thoughts. I decided to ask a few people if they knew any retreat places. I am not sure how I happened upon the Holy Cross Retreat Center, and yet I am so glad I did! This retreat center was affordable and the person I talked to was so nice. They have many retreats there each year and yet they are always the same type of retreat. This fall will be the first time they open their doors to outside groups for retreats. They do not have a minimum number of people I have to have. They are completely redoing all the rooms with new paint, new beds and new mattresses. They already redid the bathrooms so by the time we get there it will look like a whole new place.I was so excited that it was all coming together. I was amazed how the Holy Spirit led me to find the perfect place. Now that it was really happening I had to start thinking about what the theme would be and who to invite and how much it would cost. Oh, that is another way the Holy Spirit was guiding the details. The only weekend that was available except Thanksgiving weekend was October 6-8. However our prayer group is starting a Life in the Spirit Seminar on the 6th of October. However that happens to be a long weekend where many people may have Monday off. So I will be doing the retreat from Saturday until Monday instead of Friday until Sunday. It all worked out perfectly.I am still figuring out all the details so that I can open registration in the next two weeks or so. I am sure I will have another witness after the retreat about all the amazing ways the Holy Spirit worked throughout the retreat. I know the Holy Spirit will make sure those who need this retreat come to this retreat. My hope is that anyone who needs this retreat can come, even if they can't afford it. I will have a place on the registration page for people to donate extra money towards scholarships so if someone can't pay they can still come. I am excited to watch this all unfold and I'm excited to see what the Lord has planned. I truly feel as though He just wants to pour His love out on His children. I feel He wants to fill the up with His love and also provide some inner healing. I think connection with other people that are also on this faith journey is important as well. This is one way I have opened up my heart and let the Lord lead me into a new adventure. It has been an amazing journey so far. How is the Lord working in your life?

If you've seen "The Last of Us" or pretty much any post-apocalyptic movie or TV show, you may be wondering how they're keeping those war rigs fueled up. Some of them have refineries making new gas or re-refining the old stuff, but in "The Last of Us" Joel is simply using the 20 year old stale gas to power up his truck, which he says is pretty much water, so they won't get much milage out of it. But, there's a better way to get around in the aftermath of a global cataclysm, and thet's with an old mechanical diesel and that black gold, not from the gas tank, but from in the engine itself: motor oil. Join MakeShift and Shepurd as they talk about how he fuels his ride Atomic Annie with waste oil. We have all seen God working in our lives, however, we might not all be aware it is God who is working in our lives. This is why it is so important we start talking about it more. The more we share our experiences the more people understand how God works and how much He truly loves us. If you would be willing to share any experience you have had of how God has worked or is working your life, please email me at catherine@findingtruenorthcoaching.com or just click here. It won't take up much of your time and your story could be just the story that someone needs to hear today. Prayerfully consider sharing. Everyone has a story and the world needs to hear them. I look forward to spending time with you again tomorrow and I will have another witness for you next Wednesday. Remember Jesus loves you and so do I. Have a blessed day! This morning when I got up I was not sure what I was going to witness about. I thought perhaps Tony's friend who is in the ICU and has had several miracles over the last 20 days. However, something was holding me back so I prayed about it and I felt like the Lord wanted me to talk about how we have been blessed with so much support over the years. We had our first child, Sam, 19 years ago in the country of Turkey. We had been living there just about 2 years and we were moving back to the United States a few weeks after we had Sam. At the time we were in Turkey you could either have your child at a Turkish hospital or you could do something called Stork Nesting, where you would go to Landstuhl in Germany at about 36 weeks and stay there so you could deliver your baby at an American hospital since they didn't have one at our base in Turkey. I did not want to leave Tony while I was 36 weeks pregnant and go to Germany so we decided to have our first baby at a Turkish hospital. We had taken a tour and it looked like a good hospital. We knew several people who had babies there and had a good experience. My water broke exactly on Sam's due date in the middle of the night. However, I wasn't having any contractions, so we went to Tony's work and called people back in the states to let them know that today was the day. We went back home and got ready to go to the hospital. We had a nurse friend who told us by 7 am to go to the hospital even though I wasn't having contractions. We went to the hospital and the doctor started me on petocin to get the labor started. Once it was time they took me into to the room to have the baby and Sam wouldn't come out. They had to do a c-section after trying a few different things. Sam was born and he was beautiful. The next hurdle was to figure out breast feeding. I had read in books that there will be people at the hospital to help you if you have trouble. My nurse at the hospital was a 19 year old girl who had no idea about breast feeding. Luckily the base had a breast feeding counselor and once I got home she was able to come and help me figure it out. The military has a tradition of brining meals to a family if they have just had a baby, or someone is in the hospital, or if one of the parents is away for a while. It was so nice to not have to worry about cooking and trying to take care of this little baby. God was so good to send the perfect people into our lives over the years. We happened to be really good friends with a nurse and had two other nurses next door to us. One day when they were visiting they said Sam's eye looked like it had too much gunk in it. We were told his eye might be goopy, so we didn't think anything of it. However, when they saw it they told us to take him in to be seen. Sure enough he had some infection in his eye and needed ointment. Tony and I were both first time parents, we were so nervous as he was just a little baby and the doctor told us we would need to pull down the bottom part of his eye and put a thin line of ointment. Tony and I both shouted “Not it.” at the same time. The doctor looked at us and said, “you know one of you has to be it, right?” We explained we were just nervous and so he was so kind and demonstrated it for us. Sam didn't cry at all and we saw that it was super easy. We were in NJ when we had our second child, Noah. Well, I was in NJ, Tony happened to be in Colorado for a class. He was coming back in a few days. When I was thinking about writing about Noah's birth I wasn't even thinking about how God orchestrated the events leading up the birth so that I wasn't alone in the operating room. We had a planned c-section with Noah. He was going to be born on All Saints Day, November 1st. That was one week before he was due and they like to schedule c-sectioned earlier than your due date. Tony had a class he had to go to in Colorado and he had made sure we had a back up person to help out in case he was gone. The only thing is that she was busy from October 14-19th because she was away on a retreat. My sister Elizabeth and her husband and young daughter, along with my older sister Dianne decided to come visit for a few days. They were only coming down for three days, they were visiting from October 17-20th. They were supposed to get there on Monday afternoon and yet hit traffic and came in Monday night. I had an event that night on base so I say a brief hi to them and then went to my event on base. That night we hung out and watched TV together. I couldn't sleep that night I was having some sort of pain. I thought it was gas pain but in the morning I decided to go to my doctor's office just to have it checked out. Tony happened to call when I was there and the doctor told him I was fine. I wasn't having any contractions and all was good. Then she did an exam and noticed I was a bit more dilated than she thought so she sent me to the hospital just to be checked out. She told me she was sure I wasn't having the baby today. Luckily my sister Dianne had driven me to the doctor's office. By the time we got to the hospital, which was about 5 minutes away, my contractions were so strong I couldn't walk into the hospital. The doctor came in and told me I was having this baby today. I wanted to wait for Tony but he was in Colorado and wouldn't make it in time. My sister Dianne agreed to come in the OR with me for the c-section so I wouldn't be in there alone. Dianne did not want to have any children of her own, so it was neat that she got to be in the OR with me while I gave birth. She got to be the first person to hold our son Noah and that was really special. I was still recovering from the C-section and waiting for the sedation to wear off so I didn't get to hold him right away. Next thing we know he is under the warming lights and the nurse said he was breathing different. They took him to the NICU and I didn't get to see him for over 24 hours. Tony came in that night and went to see Noah. We didn't have a name at that point because we were deciding between Noah Alexander and Patrick Holden. I didn't know what he looked like, I only saw him briefly. The next day I tried to go visit Noah but when I stood up I felt dizzy so the nurse wouldn't let me go. I think I tried twice before I was able to go see him. He was so sweet. He was not really gaining weight and they wanted to put a feeding tube in but we asked them to hold off and I fed him. He was eating but it was talking him a long time. We decided to do breastfeeding every other meal and bottle feeding on the alternates meals. This way he could get more rest after he bottle fed. It was hard to see Noah in the NICU and yet we knew God was with us. At one point they said if he didn't gain a certain amount of weight by a certain time then they would put in a feeding tube, and he did gain the weight. We were able to avoid the feeding tube. God was there every step of the way with Noah. Every test he had to pass in the NICU he passed with flying colors. I believe he was in the NICU for 9 days. Those were very long days and yet we were blessed because he wasn't very sick and we knew he would be ok. The same is not true for every baby in the NICU. God was there with us and also sent people to help take care of us and take care of Sam. My mom and dad came down to keep an eye on Sam when Tony and I were in the hospital. We would both sleep at the hospital for the first several days. When we went to every other feeding we went home to sleep as there was another couple who needed the room we were using. Our friends brought meals again so we didn't have to worry about food and my parents didn't either. The birth of our third son was a planned c-section and my parents were in town to help watch Sam and Noah while we were in the hospital. This birth went off without a hitch. Everything went as planned and we stayed in the hospital just a few days to recuperate from the C-section and then headed home. Our family was complete. God is so good. He has been with us throughout each of the pregnancies and through all of the births. I know they all worked out as they were supposed to and God sent so many good people to be there for us and to help us when we needed it. Sometimes we don't realize that our friends, family and co-workers are a gift from God. We don't realize that not everyone has that support. I think this is why I try so hard to check in with people who I know are struggling. Why I check up after people I know have a procedure. This is why I text and check in to see how those I know are doing. I have been blessed, even though we moved around a lot, to have a great support network. I know that is a blessing and a grace that not everyone has. I also know I take it for granted sometimes and I am grateful for days like today when God reminds me how lucky I am. If you are lucky enough to have a support network, people who look out for you and help you, then I ask you to be that for someone else who might not have that. Who is one person you know that could use a friend, or even just a helping hand, or even just an ear to talk to. Kindness and checking in on people is more important than you think. After writing this I went on a quick run and I heard a song that goes perfectly with Witness Wednesday. I will put the lyrics in the show notes along with a link so you can listen to the song if you have time. The words are so great, if you have time, check it out and maybe think about how we can be more impressed throughout the day with God's miracles.
