Send us a textIn this episode of The Small Nonprofit Podcast, Maria sits down with Nina Horvath, Executive Director of the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society. Nina shares her insights into the fractional fundraising model, the benefits it has brought to her organization, and the challenges faced in arts fundraising. Together, they explore how fractional fundraising offers smaller nonprofits access to high-level fundraising expertise without the challenges of hiring a full-time development director. Key Topics: Exploring Fractional Fundraising What are the pros and cons of working with a Fractional Fundraiser? The financial and intangible results of working with Fractional Fundraisers at Further Together Quotable Moments: "The beauty of fractional fundraising is that you get the expertise you need at a fraction of the cost, which is perfect for small to mid-sized nonprofits"  "As an ED, it can feel isolating. Having a fractional fundraiser who understands my challenges and offers valuable, outside perspective has been a personal and professional support" "We didn't expect to double our individual giving in a year, but with a strategic approach and fresh ideas, we made it happen"   Actionable Tips: ➜ Consider Outsourced Supports: If you're a small to mid-sized nonprofit struggling to find a full-time development director, fractional fundraising could give you access to senior-level expertise without breaking the bank. ➜ Set Realistic Expectations: Don't expect to raise a million dollars overnight. Success in fundraising is about building momentum and balancing both short-term wins and long-term goals. ➜ Leverage the Expertise of a Fractional Fundraiser: Fractional fundraisers work with multiple organizations, which allows them to offer fresh insights and best practices from across the nonprofit sector. THE BLUES SOCIETY is a re-evaluation of the 1960s seen through the lens of the Memphis Country Blues Festival (1966-1969). It's the story of Blues masters like Furry Lewis and Robert Wilkins, who had attained fame in the 1920s but were living in obscurity by the 1960s. It's also the story of a group of white artists from the North and the South who created a celebration of African American music in a highly segregated city. THE BLUES SOCIETY follows the festival from its start in 1966 as an impromptu happening, through a period of cross-pollinization with New York's East Village scene, and up to the 1969 Festival, which mushroomed into a 3-day event and garnered substantial print and television coverage including an appearance on Steve Allen's national PBS show, Sounds of Summer. Festival co-founder and legendary music Executive Nancy Jeffries says, “Everyone remembers the 60s as a party, but there was a seriousness of purpose to what we were doing.” Furry Lewis worked for decades sweeping the city streets, so the efforts to recognize his musical accomplishments echo the 1968 Sanitation Strike, where each worker's sign proclaimed “I AM A MAN,” underlining theracist refusal to honor African Americans' basic humanity. Reaching into the present, the film ends in a 2017 concert where Rev. John Wilkins returns to the stage he last shared with his father 48 years earlier. What is the legacy of the Memphis Country Blues Festival, and who do the blues belong to in 2020?   On this episode, I will speak to Filmmaker and Scholar Augusta Palmer, daughter of Robert Palmer, one of the founding members of the Memphis Country Blues Society, who, with her team, worked relentlessly to get this film to the public. Joining Augusta in this episode will be The American Songster Don Flemons, who is featured in the film.

There's a story behind this week's show. The Blues Society of Omaha asked me and Glenn, who fills in from time to time, to go on the main stage of our annual, In the Market for the Blues, and discuss the history of the blues. So we did. Sorta. The blues is a pretty big topic - especially to pack into 45 minutes. Instead, I put together A History of the Blues (rather than The History...). I decided to discuss some of the events that made the blues the artform it is today including The Great Migrations of Blacks from the American South to the north and west, some of the sources for blues music including field recordings, Chess Records, and John Hammond. I also told some stories like how John Lomax's efforts to get a recording label for Leadbelly tied together with the sit-com Friends, or how John Hammond's search for Robert Johnson created, in large part, the sound that was Classic Rock, or how a Memphis kid's love of a jug band player lead, indirectly, to several hit recording acts in the 60s and 70s. Or how Reg Dwight played the blues and became Elton John. We are ecclectricity and, ideally, listeners find that entertaining and informative. At the very least, but perhaps the most important, the show is not predictable or driven by cliches of what the blues is or isn't.Thanks for giving this a listen. It was an act of love putting this together.I hope you enjoy the effort.Pacific Street BluesAugust 7, 2022Link to Visuals23. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Rumblin TroubleRumblin' Trouble is a blues duo formed by Ana Todorovic (vocal) and Marko Mosic (guitar). Though we've played together since 2013, the first big moment for Rumblin' Trouble was the interview with Jesse Finkelstein and Audrey Michelle of Blues Radio International on May 1, 2020, where we got a chance to present our original songs to a wider audience. From there, we've played on some online festivals: Blues Society of Nepal, World Unity Open Mic (Philadelphia), Lockdown Music TV (London), Crossroads Confined Countdown Festival (Paris). Since we've found joy and inspiration in playing songs of our music heroes, many of those covers were published on Aardvark Blues FM official Facebook page, and our version of “Wheel Within Wheels” was featured on Rory Gallagher's official Facebook page. Just a year after our first interview, on May 1, 2021, we published our first and independent album called “Up To You” with ten original songs.

Lady D was born in the coalfields of Cabin Creek in West Virginia. She has 6 CDs to her credit; including her newest and most recently  released, "Disturbing My Peace." Her original song, "Go Higher" was the winner of the national competition for the best Obama Inaugural Song. As a result, she and her band MISSION performed at the Obama for Change Inaugural Ball in Washington, DC in January 2009. Lady D has become well-known for her original one-woman stage play titled, "The Lady and the Empress." It is based on the life and music of blues legend, Bessie Smith. She also wrote a spin-off to this show called "Bessie's Blues,” an abbreviated version of the original show. The majority of Lady D's performances are as a duo with keyboard or guitar, but also with her 4-piece  band, MI$$ION.  She has been an opening act for soul legends, the O'Jays and performed with prominent blues artists such as Johnny Rawls and Bruce Katz. She is honored to have represented the Washington D.C. Blues Society at the 2018 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN as front woman for the Rogue Johnsen Trio. Héctor Anchondo, the third time really became the charmed one. Anchondo entered the 2020 International Blues Challenge in the solo/duo category and came away with the top prize: winning the solo/duo category. He also took home the Memphis Cigar Box Guitar Award for best guitarist in the solo/duo competition, where he performed representing the Blues Society of Omaha. It was Anchondo's third year performing at the IBC as the BSO's artist. In 2015 the Héctor Anchondo Band made the semifinals (from about 250 artists down to 50 semifinalists) and in 2016 the Héctor Anchondo Band went all the way to the finals, playing in the top eight bands chosen by judges from the week of performances.  Being a winner in the International Blues Challenge is a prestigious honor. For Anchondo, it was the culmination of over two decades of work. “Winning this feels like reward for having stuck with music for 24 years,” Anchondo says. “I had flashbacks of all the journeys, sleeping on floors, years of sleeping in the van, overnight drives, no pay, credit card debt for the cause, broken-down vans, the list goes on.”  Anchondo's dedication to music comes from his heart. He spent time in a popular rock band called Anchondo, but all the while the blues was calling him. Finally, Héctor says, “I decided to make the change to what my heart really wanted. At one point in my old band, I started playing more guitar and there were some folks that became upset because I wasn't sticking to just the songs. That broke my heart and I decided that I was going to do what my heart was asking and switch to the blues and really let my guitar loose.” He was serious enough about following his calling to move to Chicago for a year, learning from the old- school blues traditions there. “When I started playing all blues, I wanted to make sure I had an authentic sound. So, not only did I move to Chicago to soak up the blues, I also refused to listen to any other style of music for an entire year other than blues. I started on blues then moved to more rock-based. Switching genres later in life, it was important to me to make sure I had a real sound.”  “I'm proud that I never gave up,” Anchondo reflects now. “There were times of self-doubt and even a couple times where I questioned if I should change my path. My love of music and performing kept me focused on the blues path. My goals are to keep pushing myself to be a better musician, to push to keep growing so I can pay my bandmates more. Most of all, to keep making people happy so they can forget about all the day-in and day-out complexities that make up our daily lives.”  Anchondo is endorsed by Delaney Guitars and GHS Strings, and his guitar rack includes a custom guitar recently completely for him by  Mike Delaney. “I've been lucky enough to be part of both families ever since I made it to the IBC finals in 2016.”  Anchondo plans to continue touring with the Héctor Anchondo Band while also “doing more solo shows. Even a solo album is in the future. Some tours I'll have some solo shows mixed in. Hopefully I'll be able to have the guys play in those too, but in an acoustic setting.”  For now, his wife and pre-school age children are able to travel with him most of the time, something he really appreciates because he put off a serious relationship and a family to focus on his career. Back in Omaha, he's also the creative force behind his own festival, creating the In the Market for Blues Festival in 2015 with the help of local company E3 Music Management. His inspiration was the jam-packed Beale Street clubs with blues playing up and down the street during the IBC in Memphis. In the Market for Blues has grown exponentially each year with additional support from the BSO and other sponsors. The most recent event boasted over 40 local, regional and national bands at 12 downtown venues.

When the New York Times book critic Dennis Lehane writes about the opening of James Ellroy's novel, “Perfidia” he states. “There — Whalen's Drugstore, Sixth and Spring Streets. The site of four recent felonies. 211 PC — Armed Robbery.” For better and often for worse, that style — jumpy, feverish and anarchic — mirrors the world we enter.” So too does our opening track reflect this jumpy, feverish and anarchic feeling. Composed and arranged by today's guest, a musician who has performed and recorded with many world class musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Henderson, The Temptations, 10,000 Maniacs, The Four Tops and many others. Join Digging Detroit host Pete Kalinski from Royal Oak's Boo's Music Bistro inside Mr. B's Restaurant as he welcomes two of the city's foremost fans and promoters of Detroit's legendary blues legacy--President of the Detroit Blues Society, Steve Soviak and Vice President Tom McNab. It's first meeting in 1985 began a multi-decade of transformations to increase public interest in the Society. Large-scale events included a number of indoor and outdoor concerts and school workshops. Increased membership and a more organized approach allowed the Society to embark on special projects. Educational programs became more formalized and in 1996 the Scarab Club Educational/Blues Heritage Series began. Each event featured a theme based on some aspect of the Detroit blues tradition. Pete, Steve and Tom discuss the non-profit's innovations including Blues in the Schools and the Blues Challenge as the group continues to dedicate itself to the preservation, education, and advancement of the blues tradition as it relates to the Metro-Detroit area. It has as its primary goals to promote a wider appreciation for the blues by the general public and to serve the members of the Society. More at Digging Detroit! Live, Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With "Musicians You Should Know" Chris Duarte grew up in Texas and bagan playing his brother's guitar and bought his first guitar at age 14. 37 years, 14 albums (including one 'best of', 2 instructional DVDs and thousands of performances later, he is still going strong.  Chris and I will talk about his life and careet and check out songs from his latest Lucky 13. Lisa Mills was born in Mississippi and now lives in Alabama.  She has been sharing her vocals, for many years, appearing on a Big Town Playboy's album.  Her 2010 released, Tempered in Fire, and the world truly found her.  Her new album, I'm Changing, is not really a new album, but a reworking of an album she released in 2005.  What made her do this?  What are her goals?  We'll find out when I speak with Lisa. Michael Oneill is a singer/songwriter, producer, readio host and road warrior and he will join me to talk about all that and more.  His new album is entitled I Like It Like That is a "deeply personal diary of ONeill's inner journey and his introspective take on the challenges of life, love and loss". From his first tour at age of 24, when he opened for then unknown U2.  His list of touring partners and songwriting partners will impress you greatly.   The Colorado Blues Society needed to raise funds for their Blues In The Schools Program, so they cut an album! Entitled Jam For Blues In The Schools, it was recorded one Saturday afternoon.  Behind the direction of Couch Kids, Dan Treanor and Erica Brown, the album was recorded live, one take without any overdubs and turned out awful special.  I will chat with Dan, Erica, and Scott Fitzke about this project and let you know how you can support this great cause.
