Synopsis Many music lovers will confess they prefer to hear symphonies or operas in the comfort of their own home rather than live in person at a concert hall or theater. On today's date in 1911, the famous French novelist, hypochondriac, and notorious homebody Marcel Proust wrote to his friend, the composer Reynaldo Hahn, that he had just listened to a live afternoon performance of the whole first act of Wagner's opera Die Meistersinger tucked up in bed and planned to hear Debussy's still-new opera Pelléas and Mélisande later that same evening, once again snugly secure in his Parisian apartment. Now, these days with radio, TV, and multiple live-streaming devices, this would be no big deal – but in 1911 how could that be possible? Well, for 60 francs a month -- a small fortune in 1911 -- wealthy Parisians could hear live performances of operas and plays relayed by a special phone line to a home receiver called the “théâtrophone.” First demonstrated in Paris in 1881, by 1890, the “théâtrophone was commercialized and the service continued 1932. Of course, even an enthusiastic subscriber like Proust had to admit the phone line sound quality was “très mal” (“really bad” in plain English) and hardly the same as being there in person. Synopsis On today's date in 1929, the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi capped his trilogy of symphonic tone poems based on Roman scenery and history with the premiere performance of his “Roman Festivals.” Unlike the first two installments, “The Fountains of Rome” and “The Pines of Rome,” which were both premiered in Rome by Italian orchestras, “Roman Festivals” premiered in America at Carnegie Hall, with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Arturo Toscanini. “All three of the compositions are [full of] brilliant instrumental effects,” wrote music critic Olin Downes in his New York Times review the following day. “'Roman Festivals' however, fairly caps the climax for sheer orchestral sonority … The first part … is really wild and brutal music, the dramatic idea being the howls and cries of the crowd at the Circus Maximus, the salutations for Nero, the opening of the iron gates and the roaring of beasts, the hymn of the Christians about to be slaughtered... The passage is short, but of a stunning power." But Olin Downes ended his review with a Nero-esque thumbs-down: "All this program material furnishes Mr. Respighi opportunity for descriptive writing,” concludes the review, “but the music is of no merit.” Music Played in Today's Program Ottorino Resphigi (1879 — 1936) — Roman Festivals (Philadelphia Orchestra; Riccardo Muti, cond.) Synopsis Today we remember two famous French composers, both organists, who came to dramatic ends in the month of June. On June 2nd, 1937, while playing his 1,750th recital at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, Louis Vierne suffered a sudden and fatal stroke, dying in the organ loft in the presence of one of his most promising pupils, Maurice Duruflé. Vierne was born nearly blind, but his exceptional musical ability eventually led to studies with the two greatest French organ composers of the 19th century, César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor. The piece that the 66-year-old Vierne was playing when he collapsed at Notre-Dame had the morbidly apt title “Memorial for a Dead Child.” Three years later, on June 20, 1940, another talented French organist and composer, Jehan Alain, was killed in action during the Second World War. Alain's compositions were considered experimental in both rhythm and modes. Even so, he had just won the French Premier Prix for organ in 1939 when the War broke out, and he was called up for active service. Following the Battle of Saumur, Jehan Alain's body was found by the roadside, with some of his music manuscripts scattered in the wind. Music Played in Today's Program Louis Vierne (1870 - 1937) — Carillon de Longpont (Richard Proulx, organ) Sacred Heart 101 Jehan Alain (1911 - 1940) — Litanies (Carlo Curley, organ) Argo 430 200

Episode 02 is the first of several episodes focusing specifically on choral direction and the job of being a choir director. We open with a brief review of Philip’s choral directing schedule in the month of June 2016, traveling from South Korea to Sweden; followed by a discussion of how and why Philip became a choir director. Then we dive into the job description, the “101" of Being a Choir Director. Philip talks about why choirs and singing matter today, the essential need for a steady pulse, the differences in conducting singers versus instrumentalists, diction, rehearsal techniques, mixing voice types in a choir, as well as giving answers to questions from composer Dominick Argento and others. Philip also offers a few choral directing tips learned from Robert Shaw and over 50 years of conducting singers around the world. If you’ve got questions for Philip about choral conducting or music in general, please send them to us: renaissancemanpodcast [at] gmail [dot] com. And thanks so much for listening!
