Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) was one of the greatest sacred composers of the 20th century, best known for his Requiem and his motet "Ubi caritas". His lush and tranquil choral and organ works combine a deep familiarity with Gregorian chant with the style of impressionism, imbued with a sense of prayer as he was a devout Catholic. Organist and choirmaster Christopher Berry, who studied organ under Duruflé's widow, Marie-Madeleine Duruflé, joins the podcast to discuss Maurice Duruflé in his historical context as someone who, from childhood, was schooled in the Church's ancient chant tradition, and as an adult applied Pope St. Pius X's instructions for sacred music which were so influential on that generation. Schooled at the Paris conservatory, Duruflé received rigorous training in improvisation, which was the core skill for French organists at that time. His approach to improvising on chant and hymn melodies can still be heard in Catholic churches today. SynopsisOn today's date in 1935, at the Church of St. François-Xavier in Paris, organist Geneviève de la Salle gave the first complete performance of the three-movement Organ Suite, by French composer and virtuoso organist Maurice Duruflé.If you sing in a choir or are a fan of choral classics, you probably know Duruflé's serene and tranquil Requiem, which premiered about 12 years later. Now, if Duruflé's Organ Suite, Op. 5, premiered in 1935 and his Requiem, Op. 9, in 1947, you might reasonably conclude the composer was a slow, meticulous worker, which he was. In all, Duruflé's output comprises less than 15 published works, of which seven are for organ. His Organ Suite consists of a brooding “Prélude,” a “Sicilienne” — which evokes the harmonies and inflections of Ravel — and a brilliant, concluding “Toccata.”Duruflé's music is firmly embedded in the French tradition of organ composers such as César Franck and Louis Vierne, and Duruflé's composition teacher, Paul Dukas. The great French organist Marie-Claire Alain described Duruflé's music as “perfectly honest art.”“He was not an innovator but a traditionalist,” she said “… Duruflé evolved and amplified the old traditions, making them his own."Music Played in Today's ProgramMaurice Durufle (1902-1986) Organ Suite; Todd Wilson (Schudi organ at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Dallas, Texas) Delos 3047

SynopsisIn France, today is “la Fete de la Toussaint” – All Saints' Day – observed as both a sacred and secular national holiday, a time to visit cemeteries and put flowers on the graves of relatives. In 1947, when memories of the dead of World War II were still fresh, French Radio broadcast three premieres at a special concert from the Salle Gaveau in Paris.First on the program was the French premiere of Hungarian composer Lazlo Lajhta's somber In Memoriam. This had been the first new orchestral work to be performed in Budapest when concert life had resumed after the war.Second was the world premiere of the Sixth Symphony by Polish composer Alexandre Tansman, who, being Jewish, found refuge in France in 1938, then, during the German occupation, had fled to the United States. In 1946, Tansman returned to Europe in time for the premiere of his symphony, also titled In Memoriam, at this concert. The third work on the program was another world premiere: a newly completed Requiem Mass by French composer Maurice Duruflé, originally commissioned as an orchestral work in 1941 during the German occupation of France, which morphed into a choral Requiem Mass by the time of the liberation.Music Played in Today's ProgramMaurice Duruflé (1902 - 1906) – Requiem (Westminster Choir; Joseph Flummerfelt, cond.)

Synopsis Today we remember two famous French composers, both organists, who came to dramatic ends in the month of June. On June 2nd, 1937, while playing his 1,750th recital at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, Louis Vierne suffered a sudden and fatal stroke, dying in the organ loft in the presence of one of his most promising pupils, Maurice Duruflé. Vierne was born nearly blind, but his exceptional musical ability eventually led to studies with the two greatest French organ composers of the 19th century, César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor. The piece that the 66-year-old Vierne was playing when he collapsed at Notre-Dame had the morbidly apt title “Memorial for a Dead Child.” Three years later, on June 20, 1940, another talented French organist and composer, Jehan Alain, was killed in action during the Second World War. Alain's compositions were considered experimental in both rhythm and modes. Even so, he had just won the French Premier Prix for organ in 1939 when the War broke out, and he was called up for active service. Following the Battle of Saumur, Jehan Alain's body was found by the roadside, with some of his music manuscripts scattered in the wind. On today’s date in 1935, at the Church of Saint François-Xavier in Paris, organist Geneviève de la Salle gave the first complete performance of the three-movement Suite, Op. 5, by the French composer and virtuoso organist Maurice Duruflé. If you sing in a choir or are a fan of choral classics, you probably know Duruflé’s serene and tranquil “Requiem,” Op. 9, which premiered some 12 years later. Now, if Duruflé’s Op. 5 premiered in 1935, and his Op. 9 in 1947, you might reasonably conclude the composer was a slow, meticulous worker, which he was. In all, Duruflé’s output comprises less than 15 published works, of which seven are for organ. His Organ Suite, Op. 5 consist of a brooding Prélude, a Sicilienne that evokes the harmonies and inflections of Ravel, and a brilliant, concluding Toccata. Duruflé’s music is firmly embedded in the French tradition of organ composers like César Franck and Louis Vierne, and Duruflé’s own composition teacher, Paul Dukas. The great French organist Marie-Claire Alain described Duruflé’s music as “… perfectly honest art. . . He was not an innovator but a traditionalist … Duruflé evolved and amplified the old traditions, making them his own."

The SATB choir and organ version of Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, Op. 9 was published in 1948 by the French firm Durand. It had been commissioned six years earlier under the collaborationist Vichy regime, but Duruflé was still working on it in 1944 when the regime collapsed and in fact did not complete it until the year of publication. The composer dedicated the Requiem to the memory of his father. Welcome to Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast #75! Today's guest is an American organist Dr. Jesse Eschbach who is a world-reknown expert on the French organ culture in general and Aristide Cavaille-Coll's organs in particular. Dr. Eschbach is a graduate of the University of Michigan where he was a student of Robert Glasgow. He completed his formal education during a five-year residency in Paris as a student of Marie-Claire Alain, specializing in early French music inher conservatory class at Rueil-Malmaison where he was awarded both a Prix d'Excellence and a Prix de Virtuosité. As one of the very last students of the legendary Marie-Madeleine Duruflé-Chevalier, he studied the complete organ works of her husband, Maurice Duruflé, as well as much of the French symphonic repertoire. Since 1986, Eschbach has served on the faculty at the University of North Texas as the full-time Professor of Organ, instructing performance majors at all levels. His students have dominated the annual San Antonio competition since 1995 and have won prizes in national competitions as well. A very active performer until 1998, Eschbach has several CDs to his credit, including a disc recorded at the Cathédrale de Perpignan entitled “Music of the Second Empire and Beyond”, released in June, 2003. Also released in 2003 was his 800+ page book, detailing the original stoplists of the majority of organs constructed by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, based extensively on the Lapresté collection. This research is still in progress, and an expanded second edition will be released in the next few years. The first edition received a very positive “feature review” in the March, 2007 issue of The American Organist. Likewise, his CD recorded on the 1857 Aristide Cavaillé-Coll organ in Perpignan consisting of works by Lemmens, Franck, Gigout, Fessy, Schubert, and Couturier garnered high praise in a February, 2007 review in The Diapason. Recent tours have taken him to Poland and Italy. He has recently completed assignments adjudicating the preliminary rounds of the AGO National Competition, the Canadian International Organ Competition, and in April 2008, judged the finals of the Fort Wayne National Competition. In this conversation we talk about Dr. Eschbach's research on the stop lists of Cavaille-Coll's organs. Enjoy and share your comments below. And don't forget to help spread the word about the SOP Podcast by sharing it with your organist friends. Thanks for caring. Relevant links: https://music.unt.edu/faculty-and-staff/jesse-eschbach Jesse Eschbach: Aristide Cavaille-Coll. A compendium of known stoplists Vol. 1: http://amzn.to/2iowS4t
