Dietrich Buxtehude, Heinrich Schutz, Heinrich Schmelzer, Johann Herman Schein…they're not exactly household names today. But in the years before Johann Sebastian Bach, they composed music for the Christmas season—beautiful music that you may hear at Christmas time without knowing who wrote it.
The emerging Fourth Wall Ensemble, founded in 2023, has made a splash in its first year with a double album release, including Awake, with music by Samuel Siskind; and Ad Manus, with vocal selections by Caroline Shaw, Dietrich Buxtehude, Jeff Beal, Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, and Reena Esmail. Christopher Allen, the ensemble's artistic and creative director, speaks with Mary Claire Murphy and highlights some of Fourth Wall Ensemble's recent live performances, especially their appearance on the Death of Classical series that's held in crypts and cemeteries in New York City.

Montag, 15. November 2023, 17.30 - 17.55 UhrEine Achtung Bibel!-Sendung von Stefanie Jeller

DESCENDING INTO THE SHORT DAYS OF THE DARK SEASON, once again we seek music that portrays human emotions at their most vulnerable: music of pathos, loss and remembrance. These are some of our most powerful and deeply affecting feelings, and they require music that touches the depths of our souls. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a special program of sacred choral, vocal and instrumental music for the dark season, from longtime guest producer ELLEN HOLMES called LAMENTO 2. A lament is a cathartic song or poem expressing grief or mourning: a recognition of the ultimate sadness of mortality. Many of the oldest and most enduring poems in human history have been laments; they're found in the Iliad and the Odyssey, the Hindu Vedas, and in ancient Near Eastern religious texts, including the Old Testament. We'll feature selections extending across 500 years of western classical music, by JOSQUIN DES PREZ, CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI, CARLO GESUALDO, DIETRICH BUXTEHUDE, ANTONIO VIVALDI, GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL, JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH, LILY BOULANGER, RALPH LAURIDSEN, LISA GERRARD, STELLAMARA, LES NOUVELLES POLYPHONIES CORSES, and MAX RICHTER. A casual discussion about Shostakovich by two Bruckner enthusiasts (Jason and Sébastien). A graduate from the Royal Conservatory of Liège in Belgium (1st prize organ, 1st prize harmony, 1st prize history of music, 1st prize musical analysis); Sébastien Letocart is a self-taught composer, who has built his musical equally by studying ancient music (i.e. Josquin Desprez, William Byrd, Tomas Luis Vitoria, Roland de Lassus, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Claudio Monteverdi, Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Sebastian Bach), practicing it (organ, harpsichord and singing) as well as analyzing the great scores of the Classical Symphony (Haydn, Mozart), the Romantic (Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, Dvořák, Bruckner), the Post-romantic (Debussy, Roussel, R.Strauss, Mahler, Sibelius, Nielsen) and the symphonic repertoire of the first half of the 20th century (Bartók, Hindemith, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Bax, Vaughan Williams, Holst, Walton, Honegger, Martinu, Varèse). He is also highly interested in the music of the last sixty years, his preferences are going from György Ligeti, Iannis Xenakis or Esa-Pekka Salonen to Einar Englund, Aulis Sallinen, Emil Tabakov, Kalevi Aho, Vagn Holmboe, John Adams, Sir Malcolm Arnold or Sir Andrzej Panufnik. He is also greatly attracted by chamber music, especially by the refined writing that the string quartet demands and by Béla Bartók's six String Quartets which are the nec plus ultra of the genre. Bach Family and Friends. Toccata in F Major. Dietrich Buxtehude.
Donald Macleod explores the life and works of legendary organist and composer Dietrich Buxtehude. Buxtehude was a musical star in his own time, whom Johann Sebastian Bach walked almost 300 miles just to meet and learn from. Yet, the facts of Buxtehude's own story are far from straight forward. Doubts remain over so many details in the composer's life. We can't even be sure when or where he was born, leading to three different countries claiming him as their own, and for a musician who perhaps above all was famed for his organ music, it is remarkable that not one single organ piece by him was published in his lifetime. In this Composer of the Week series, Donald Macleod pieces together what we do know about Buxtehude, the pre-eminant European composer before Bach, and finds a multifaceted personality and ground-breaking musician who worked his way across Europe via three different churches dedicated to St Mary, and who – once he settled in Lubeck - acted as a kind of centre of gravity for other musicians of his age. Synopsis A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust, and a hearty “Hi-yo, Silver!” Generations of American baby boomers first heard Rossini's “William Tell” Overture as the opening credits of the old Lone Ranger TV western, but we suspect only a few of them ever realized the overture by an Italian composer was written for a French opera about a Swiss archer, which was adapted from a German play by Friedrich Schiller. Like a Facebook relationship, “It's complicated.” Anyway, Rossini's “William Tell” was first heard in Paris on today's date in 1829. Rossini hoped “William Tell” would be considered his masterpiece. Ironically, the complete opera is only rarely staged these days, but the “William Tell” overture became a familiar concert hall showpiece – SO familiar, in fact, as to become something of a musical cliché. The Russian composer Dimitri Shostakovich gave a dark 20th-century spin to Rossini's overly familiar theme, when he quoted the “William Tell” overture in the opening movement of his Symphony No. 15. In the context of Shostakovich's enigmatic final symphony, Rossini's jaunty little theme comes off like a forced smile, and audiences are free to read whatever political subtext they wish into its rather sinister context. Music Played in Today's Program Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) –William Tell Overture (Philharmonia Orchestra; Carlo Maria Giulini, cond.) Bach were both interested in the position - but not in Tunder's daughter; 1778 - Milan's famous Teatro alla Scala (La Scala) opens with a performance of “L'Europa riconosciuta” by Italian opera composer Antonio Salieri, a work written specially for the occasion; The theater took its name from the site previously occupied by the church of Santa Maria della Scala (named after Bernabo Visconti's wife, Beatrice della Scala); This same opera, conducted by Riccardo Muti, was performed on Dec. 7, 2004 at the Gala reopening of La Scala after three years of major renovation; 1779 - Mozart finishes in Salzburg his "Posthorn" Serenade; 1795 - The Paris Conservatory of Music is founded by the National Revolutionary Convention. This week's episode is a musical celebration of all things spring. As in all episodes of this sort, it features a wide range of singers in performances recorded over the course of many decades, all singing about the delights (and sometimes the heartbreak) of spring. Artists include Carmen McRae, Beniamino Gigli, Elisabeth Söderström, Helen Morgan, Leontyne Price, Judy Collins, Eartha Kitt, Emma Calvé, Eileen Farrell, Kaye Ballard, Gérard Souzay, Patricia Neway, and Edith Piaf, among many others, singing songs of Tommy Wolf, Fran Landesman, Georges Auric, Hugo Wolf, Lerner and Loewe, Dietrich Buxtehude, Alec Wilder, and Paolo Tosti. A vernal feast for the ears! The Countermelody podcast is devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. How is the flame of faith in your life these days? Can you imagine a love for you greater than your understanding? However, you are feeling, the letter to the Ephesians was written to offer hope and encouragement and reassurance in being a community of believers, grounded in the good news of Jesus amidst challenging times. Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA lead the second week of this Bible study on the Book of Ephesians and today focuses upon Chapter 3 verses 14-21. Parallels with the story of the Prodigal Son, and the infinite nature of God who chooses to dwell in our hearts and fill us and the world with boundless love and imagining the world beyond what we see sharing in this love fill part of our time. Today's closing music is "Now We Pray to eh Holy Spirit" by Dietrich Buxtehude played by Grace organist, Cynthia Mills.
