AP Washington correspondent Sagar Meghani reports Iowa's Caitlin Clark is close to becoming the NCAA's all-time women's basketball scoring leader -- but she's far off the all-time women's mark.
Penn State Nittany Lions football coach James Franklin talked about the state of college athletics today and says we've slid down a slippery slope and it needs to be fixed. The current situation cannot remain the same. Otherwise coaches are going to leave the sport for simpler jobs in the NFL, or head coaches like Chip Kelly will leave their jobs for coordinator jobs when they burn out. Franklin also talked about how NIL and transfer portal access has gone too far and it is harming the student athletes long term. He is glad the Big Ten and SEC are joining forces to come up with solutions to these problems. We have some thoughts on Franklin's comments as well. Tonight is the night (most likely) that Iowa's Caitlin Clark becomes the NCAA women's all-time leading scorer as the Hawkeyes host Michigan. The game should be an instant classic. In men's basketball, Ohio State fired coach Chris Holtmann after dropping their 17th straight road game. And Michigan coach Juwan Howard seemed to receive a vote of confidence from athletic director Warde Manuel who says he has not considered making a change with his basketball coach despite the fact they have struggled for two seasons now. On Thursdays we like to highlight any Big Ten Classics and Live programming coming up this weekend on the Big 10 Network. We have a lot of basketball scheduled as the season is in full crunch-time mode for those with post-season aspirations. All of that and more is coming up on Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon. On this day after Valentine's, the lovefest continues as I dissect and share all that's happening in sports. On deck: (3:14) We make the pivot to The Sports Dead Zone, Pt. 1 (Post Super Bowl and right before the NCAA Tournament or Opening Day of the MLB season) as I spend a moment discussing this. (6:03) What was supposed to be another celebratory parade through Kansas City with their third title in five years, turned out to be a nightmare as a mass shooting occurred nearby the festivities to where one person was killed and 22 others injured. When will this country wake up and take a stand to these senseless shootings? Then the San Francisco 49ers fired their defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. He's the fall guy for the Niners losing the Super Bowl on Sunday. I have a major problem with this, so I'll go in on the GM John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan as Wilks did not deserve this fate. (15:46) The NBA will head into the All-Star Break after a few games tonight. Will I be watching? You had the rumor that the Warriors were interested in acquiring LeBron James at the trade deadline last week. Why I'm glad that didn't take place? A few days ago, Kevin Durant stated that former teammate Steph Curry is a top-5 all time player? Is he accurate with that statement? Then you had Pistons center, Isaiah Stewart assault Suns Drew Eubanks BEFORE the game in Phoenix last night. How did this all come about? I'll survey the basketball landscape as the league takes a respite for the next week. (30:53) As for college basketball, another top team falls by the wayside (i.e. #7 North Carolina) Tonight, history will likely be made as Iowa's Caitlin Clark will break the all time scoring record in women's college basketball. Is she considered one of the great women's players of all time? (35:18) It's a big weekend for the NHL as there's not one, but two, outdoor games as the Stadium Series will occur at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey. Saturday night will have the Flyers visiting the Devils, while Sunday afternoon, the Islanders are the home team against the Rangers. Will these games be sold out? What about the weather for both matchups? I have to get into the aftermath of the cross check of Morgan Rielly to Ridley Greig, which garnered a five game suspension to the Maple Leafs Rielly. Did the punishment fit the crime? And what could be done to stop incidents like this? I'll check on who's hot and who's not on the ice as the season is just about two-thirds done. (44:20) Pitchers and catchers have reported throughout the MLB. There's one notable player that may have a slow start to their upcoming year. Astros pitcher, Justin Verlander is behind schedule on a shoulder issue. Is anyone surprised? Is yours truly into this early part of spring training with position players reporting in five days? What about big time free agents that are still out there? (I.e. Blake Snell, Cody Ballinger and Matt Chapman) Please subscribe, leave a rating and post a review on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Audacy, Amazon Music and iHeartRadio or wherever you get your podcasts. On Episode 180 of the Ballislife In The Paint Show, hosts Ronnie Flores, Ani Umana and Chelsea Hopkins go hard on the one-year plan that was hatched for the late, great Kobe Bryant to turn pro out of high school with special guest Gary Charles, who was part of the small circle that knew of the plans for the 17-year wunderkind from Lower Merion High School (Ardmore, Pa.). Before bringing on Gary Charles for his exclusive and unique insight on the plan to get Bryant to the L.A. Lakers via a trade with the Charlotte Hornets, the ITP Crew give their instant reaction to the Super Bowl (and Usher's halftime performance) and dish on comments from WNBA great Sheryl Swoopes on Iowa's Caitlin Clark regarding her adjustment once she gets to the W. Was Swoopes on point, out of line or partially correct? Chelsea goes in. Charles then spends 40 minutes breaking down the plan to get Kobe from Lower Merion to the NBA, even though he was a wing guard and academically eligible for any college in the country. That was unheard of at the time. Charles goes "In The Paint" on meeting Kobe through his father Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, what Kobe was like as a rising junior at ABCD Camp, the keys to hatching the plan for him to turn pro, and the occurrences that could have foiled Team Bryant's plan to keep him from Nike and keep other NBA teams drafting higher than Charlotte from realizing he should be their pick. What would have happened in Lower Merion would have traveled to Los Angeles for a MLK Showcase game vs. Schea Cotton and St John Bosco? Why taking R & B singer Brandy to the prom was potentially worrisome? What if Tim Thomas would have went straight pro out of high school instead of going to Villanova? What if the New Jersey Nets would have went for Kobe at No. 8 instead of Kerry Kittles? Charles, a longtime grassroots basketball coach and event director, also gives some insight on a Plan B if the Charlotte move didn't happen and what transpired leading up to draft day. The ITP crew then close this special episode with their reactions to the interview and some media references helpful to learn more background information on Kobe's unique path. Kobe's prep-to-pro journey hasn't been told in this manner, so make sure to tune in to Episode 180 from start to finish! Hour 1: It's getting close to the NFL Draft and the Chicago Bears are on the clock with the #1 pick. The fanbase is 50/50 on if they should draft a QB #1 overall. If they do go QB then what are some possible destinations for Justin Fields in a trade? Iowa's Caitlin Clark made NCAA History yesterday and more.
Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes were joined by ESPN senior writer Adam Rittenberg, who discussed the emergence of the general manager role in college football and Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark moving into second place on the NCAA women's all-time scoring list during the Hawkeyes' 110-74 win over the Northwestern Wildcats on Wednesday in Evanston.
Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes opened their show with a focus on college sports. They were joined by ESPN senior writer Adam Rittenberg, who discussed the emergence of the general manager role in college football and Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark moving into second place on the NCAA women's all-time scoring list during the Hawkeyes' 110-74 win over the Northwestern Wildcats on Wednesday in Evanston. Bernstein and Holmes then discussed the statue of Jackie Robinson that was stolen from a Wichita, Kansas park last week. Keep an eye on Texas A&M. Some think they may leave the SEC just as their old rival Texas Longhorns join. Would the Aggies come to the Big 10? Some think there could be mutual interest some day. Certainly the Big 10 would love a footprint inside the state of Texas. So what is causing this topic of conversation? Well, we are watching the ACC closely and we feel that conference will blow up. If it does, expect a bidding war between the Big 10 and ACC for North Carolina and Virginia to take place. Depending on the results of that situation, eyes may fall on Texas A&M to move to the Big 10 or maybe return to the Big 12. Another option for the Aggies is to remain where they are. Expansion talk is crazy. We also look at Michigan football's plan for offensive coordinator under Sherrone Moore and we ask if Mike Vrable would spend a year as an coaching analyst at Wisconsin or Ohio State. Interesting! Iowa's Caitlin Clark continues her march toward the NCAA scoring mark with a game tonight and we have our weekly Big 10 Power Rankings for Men's basketball. Iowa Hawkeyes football coach Kirk Ferentz is hiring former Western Michigan head coach Tim Lester as his new offensive coordinator. We are not sure Lester's offense will be much better than former coordinator Brian Ferentz's. We will explain why. It has to do with talent and the fact that Lester has not produced an offensive season to hang his resume on. And don't get us wrong! Because we LOVE Iowa football. Their march toward a ten win season and a place in the Big 10 Championship was one of the best stories of 2023. We also look at Zach Edey's amazing numbers at Purdue and Rutger's tough defense in Big 10 play. And we are on "milestone-watch" with Iowa's Caitlin Clark! Plus we enjoy flipping through our favorite tweets on Tuesday Tweets. Let's see if you made the list! It's all coming up on Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon!
