The discourse presented during this session at Theology Beer Camp 2024 in Denver, Colorado, delves into the intricate relationship between video games and theological and ethical considerations. Central to the conversation is Ben Chicka's latest publication, "Playing as Others: Theological and Ethical Responsibility in Video Games," which posits that engaging with video games can facilitate profound reflections on identity and moral agency. The dialogue, led by Joshua Noel of Systematic Geekology and Taylor Thomas of Tillich Today, explores how players navigate their interactions within virtual realms, particularly when embodying characters that differ from their own lived experiences. Through the lens of philosophical theology, the speakers examine the ways in which video games serve as cultural artifacts that can affirm one's existence while simultaneously fostering empathy for others. This episode ultimately encourages listeners to recognize the potential of gaming as a medium for ethical engagement and personal growth, challenging the traditional boundaries of both theology and popular culture.Check out Ben Chicka's book, "Playing as Others: Theological and Ethical Responsibility in Video Games":https://www.amazon.com/Playing-Others-Theology-Ethical-Responsibility/dp/1481315463.Follow Taylor Thomas' podcast, "Tillich Today":https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tillich-today/id1725855909In a thought-provoking recording from Theology Beer Camp 2024, Joshua Noel and Taylor Thomas engage Ben Chicka in a dialogue that traverses the intersection of gaming and theology, anchored by Chicka's recent publication, "Playing as Others: Theological and Ethical Responsibility in Video Games." The setting, a vibrant gathering of theological minds in Denver, provides a rich backdrop for exploring the implications of gaming on personal identity and ethical considerations. Chicka, a Senior Lecturer at Curry College, articulates how video games can transcend mere entertainment, serving instead as a conduit for theological reflection and ethical engagement. At the heart of the conversation lies the assertion that playing video games as diverse characters can foster a sense of empathy and understanding, facilitating a deeper connection to the experiences of others. Chicka draws upon the works of Paul Tillich to frame his arguments, suggesting that video games can create spaces for encountering the 'Other' and grappling with complex ethical dilemmas. Through examples from notable titles such as "Gone Home" and "Mass Effect," he elucidates how these narratives challenge players' assumptions and promote a more inclusive worldview. The episode further explores the cultural significance of gaming communities, positing that they can embody modern theological spaces that encourage acceptance and pluralism. Chicka's insights invite listeners to reconsider their relationship with video games, framing them as potent tools for personal and communal transformation. By the conclusion of the discussion, the audience is left with a renewed appreciation for the theological dimensions of gaming, encouraging a conscientious approach to engaging with digital narratives.Takeaways: The theological and ethical implications of video games extend beyond mere entertainment, inviting deeper reflection on identity and existence. Ben Chicka's work emphasizes the role of video games in shaping cultural narratives and understanding the 'other' in a theological context. The discussion highlights how video games can create spaces for marginalized voices, fostering acceptance and...

Sabbath Keeping Vs Escaping Efforts

This week, Jay and Chicka discuss the only commandment not repeated in the New Testament is the one about Sabbath-keeping. The key to understanding how Jesus is our Sabbath rest is the Hebrew word sabat, which means "to rest or stop or cease from work." The origin of the Sabbath goes back to Creation. After creating the heavens and the earth in six days, God "rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made" (Genesis 2:2). This doesn't mean that God was tired and needed a rest. We know that God is omnipotent, literally "all-powerful." He has all the power in the universe, He never tires, and His most arduous energy expenditure does not diminish His power. So, what does it mean that God rested on the seventh day? Simply that He stopped what He was doing. He ceased His labors. This is important in understanding the establishment of the Sabbath day and the role of Christ as our Sabbath rest. Jay and Chicka explore establishing the "Word for the Year" as the foundation in prayer and petition for 2023.  Let us be thankful to God for Jesus Christ, the only foundation which he has laid, and for the abundant evidence which he has given us of the di|vinity of his character, the perfection of his righ|teousness, the acceptance of his sacrifice, the preva|lence of his intercession, and the future glory of his kingdom. Let us build our faith, hope, profession, obedience, and experience on Him as our foundation. We must not pretend to hold the foundation unless we are building thereon; for a foundation is of no use but to build upon. Having begun at the proper foundation, let us be careful that our structure consists of the best materials and avoid, as much as possible, all impure and pe|rishable mixtures. And if we are building on this foundation, we shall have all his glorious perfections engaged for us; his wisdom to direct us, his righ|teousness to justify us, his power to defend us, and his grace to bestow on us a full reward—when he "shall be revealed from heaven in flaming fire." Then, our building, though imperfect, will abide the trial, all our errors and infirmities will be purged away, and our virtuous habits will be carried to perfection. You'll hear Tony Robbins in a dynamic interview with the co-founders of BOOMCHICKAPOP, a wildly successful natural and organic popcorn brand that completely disrupted the snack industry.   Angie and Dan Bastian were looking to put aside some money for their kids' college fund when they started a small kettle corn business out of their garage.  Initially selling popcorn at outdoor events, including Minnesota Vikings games, the couple soon took their popcorn to Trader Joe's, Target, and Costco – gaining a crash course in how to operate a business along the way.  The real game changer took place when the then-named Angie's Kettle Corn embraced a bold new identity: BOOMCHICKAPOP.  Angie retired from being a nurse practitioner and Dan from a history teacher and baseball coach to run their company full time.  And after years of commitment and sacrifice, the Bastian's sold their business in 2017 to Chicago-based Conagra Brands for $250 million. In this candid conversation, the couple reveals how facing their fears and connecting to their customer base in a fresh and empowering way led to their ultimate success. Jesus came to restore all of life, which includes romance, sex and love. Everyone carries scars when it comes to romance, sex, and love. Stat's on Scars: Sexual Abuse, Divorce Rate, Sexual Transmitted Diseases, Virginity, Pornography, Infidelity Jesus came for the scarred and hurting – Jesus became scarred so we could be healed and restored. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and disreputable sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” Matthew 9:10-13 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. Matthew 9:10-13 Jesus teaches: Our failures and scars don't drive God away, they break His heart and compel His mercy and grace for us. Healing is a process where we take steps of surrender to Jesus. Surrender to Jesus: EYES: How will I see others, MIND: How will I think of others, HEART: What will I put first But I tell you that anyone who looks at a person lustfully has already committed adultery with them in their heart. Matthew 5:28 Surrender to Jesus: EYES: How will I see others, MIND: How will I think of others, HEART: What will I put first …and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 Surrender to Jesus: EYES: How will I see others, MIND: How will I think of others, HEART: What will I put first And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. Mark 12:30 Surrender to Jesus: EYES: How will I see others, MIND: How will I think of others, HEART: What will I put first Surrender to Jesus allows for steps that heal our scars

Intimate Good Sex – Physical Emotional Mental Spiritual False Pictures – Unfair Expectations – Flawed Priorities Fleeting desires (short term) – Strong Desires (satisfaction) – Deep Desires (significant) False Pictures – sexual pleasure is the pinnacle of living. Sex is always euphoric and amazing. Happy marriages and great sex lives just happen with the right person. Unfair Expectations- I'm entitled to gratification and the pursuit of pleasure is over-prioritized. Romance magically fixes the real world chaos and exhaustion we all face. Love doesn't require effort, intention and sacrifice. Flawed Priorities: Pleasure over Purpose – Novelty over Meaning – Entertainment over Significance Seeing romance, sex and love through a warped lens will lead us to choose the wrong priorities, and cause us to miss out. …'Father, give me my share of the estate'… Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. Luke 15:11-14 ‘Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf!' Luke 15:30 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. Mark 4:18-19 Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life. John 4:13-14 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 1 Corinthians 6: 18-20 You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 Jesus teaches: Prioritizing pleasure over God always leads to disappointment and pain. Unfair Expectations: I'm entitled to gratification and the pursuit of pleasure is over-prioritized. Romance magically fixes the real world chaos and exhaustion we all face. Given that, spending some time improving your relationship in other areas can benefit you in the bedroom. Psychology Today Intimacy is key to having a healthy, functional and overall happy relationship. Johns Hopkins Chris Kraft, Ph.D., director of clinical services at the Sex and Gender Clinic Exclusivity and Security fuels intimacy. Comparison and performance kills intimacy. “Results from Playboy's 2019 sex survey suggests that most married couples value sex and report higher relationship satisfaction when having an exclusive sexual relationship with their spouse.” Marriage.com “As with relationship happiness, duration was a significant predictor of sexual satisfaction.” Kinsey Institute “In terms of how their sex life could be improved, people say they're looking for more love and romance, more quality time alone with their partner, more fun, and less stress.” Verywell Mind “Committed relationships make women almost twice as likely to climax” Women's Health-University of Chicago study Intimate Good Sex: Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Don't weaponize scriptures or sex to manipulate and guilt another for self-gratification. Spouses are unique individuals, And, generalizations exist for a reason. Healthy relationships are made up of healthy individuals. Intimate Good Sex: Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply…” Genesis 1:28 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. Jesus of Nazareth – John 13:34 The husband should fulfill his wife's sexual needs, and the wife should fulfill her husband's needs. The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife. 1 Corinthians 7:3-5 Do not deprive each other of sexual relations, unless you both agree to refrain from sexual intimacy for a limited time so you can give yourselves more completely to prayer. 1 Corinthians 7:3-5 Marriage is to be honored by all, and husbands and wives must be faithful to each other. Hebrews 13:4 Physical: Orgasm gap (90% men & 48% female), Genital design differences, Regularity (snack, meal, feast), Communication “…only 28% of women can have an orgasm from penetrative sex alone.” “For a lot of women, they need direct clitoral stimulation in order to have an orgasm.” “Women have the same kind of erectile tissues as men, but all on the inside, women need a lot of time for that stuff to come into play…After 15 to 20 minutes of foreplay,” ABC.net 9/17 Giving, as well as receiving, has its benefits. Research out of the University of Toronto tracked desire in long-term couples and determined that the happiest pairs expressed “sexual communal desire,” aka the desire to have good sex for your partner's satisfaction as opposed to just your own. “More than half of women reported they had wanted to communicate with a partner regarding sex but decided not to; the most common reasons were not wanting to hurt a partner's feelings…” Verywell Mind Emotional: Intimacy requires feeling valued! (Female & Male) Females & Males generally feel valued differently It's different for me ( fair feelings/unfair excuses) Female: Being “for me” outside the bed, confirms you're for me in the bed. Male: Being “for me” in the bed confirms you're for me outside the bed. Sharing chores is the third-highest factor in successful marriages—behind fidelity and a happy sex life. University of Chicago A healthy marriage with intimate sex requires mutuality, selflessness, serving, and God-given boundaries.

Jesus said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins.” Luke 22:14-16 “For I tell you now that I won't eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.” Luke 22:14-16 Then he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. Then he said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come.” Matthew 22:17-20 He took some break and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Matthew 22:17-20 After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.” Matthew 22:17-20 Look Back, Look In, Look Forward So then, whoever eats this break of drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and the blood of the Lord. Sex: Stimulation for sexual gratification that may include an orgasm for one or both people. Sex is casual because it's just a physical act, like eating a meal? For casual sex to exist: Sex must be disconnected from impacting us: Emotionally, Physically, Financially and Spiritually Neuro-science Facts: Vasopressin, Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin “oxytocin can create a sense of stability and intimacy in relationships – even if that stability and intimacy is only in your head. When you are not a partner who brings a sense of loving comfort and connection, feelings of anxiety and stress tend to increase” Carla Manly, Clinical Psychologist –Elite Daily “Sex, including casual sex, causes the brain to release oxytocin, which makes us feel more emotionally tied to a person. Basically, your biologically wired to attach to any sexual partners, so it's not only common, it's natural.” Women's Health “Love and sexual arousal are typically (by most studies) indistinguishable in the brain,” Dr Nicole Prause: Licensed psychologist & neuroscientist PsychCentral “As we predicted, those who engaged in more hookups had greater psychological distress. College students who recently engaged in casual sex reported lower levels of self-esteem, life satisfaction…” Psychology Today – Miami University “…and happiness compared to those who had not had casual sex in the past month. And students who had engaged in hookups had higher distress scores as indicated by levels of depression and anxiety.” Psychology Today – Miami University “Marriage economist Betsy Stevenson and Justin Wolfers speculate that while men enjoy the spoils of the sexual revolution – they are (scientifically, statistically) far less impacted by the decline of traditional family and rising economic inequality.” Vox 2019 Calling it “casual sex” won't stop the natural results sex is designed to have. But at the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. Mark 10:6-9 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate. Mark 10:6-9 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 1 Corinthians 6:15-18 Do you not know that the one who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “the two will become one flesh.” But whoever is united with the Lord, is one with him in spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:15-18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 1 Corinthians 6:15-18 Sex Sacred Design: Unbreakable Promise – Unite in Oneness – Unique Gift Sex is so amazing and powerful, God requires boundaries so we don't hurt ourselves and others.

Sexual failure is worse. Women are less. God is anti-pleasure. There is abuse and hypocrisy. Denies complexity. Humanity: Marriage disintegration, 81% of women sexually harassed, 5 million people, sex trafficked, 1 out of 4 women sexually assaulted, 1 out of 2 15-24 year olds STD, 3.5 Billion porn visits per month, 70 Million Child pornography Our dream of great romance, amazing sex and fairytale love often ends up dysfunctional and damaged. Male and Females are EQUAL image-bearers. God invented sex and orgasms. Jesus undoes the myth that sex failures are worse. Jesus is for marriage for protection, NOT for patriarchy, Jesus is the author of human dignity. Matthew 19:3 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to your hard hearts, but it was not what God had originally intended.
