On a warm August day in 1910, Sheriff Jake Houpt and his deputies attempted to arrest brothers George and Oscar Chitwood outside the Garland County Courthouse in Hot Springs, Arkansas. A gunfight soon erupted, leaving both the sheriff and George dead. And when Oscar himself was killed in December under the protection of deputies, a mob of mysterious masked men were blamed for the lynching. But evidence suggests the story of Oscar's death might have been a cover for something else. My guest is Christopher Thrasher, who along with fellow author and historian Guy Lancaster wrote the book "The Murder of Oscar Chitwood in Hot Springs, Arkansas". He summarizes this fascinating story for us on this latest episode of Most Notorious. It's an action packed show this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast! John starts things off with a bold prediction for this year's deer season you are going to want to hear. After that, Oklahoma State University Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management Assistant Professor Colter Chitwood joins the show to talk about a few research projects he is involved with around the state of Oklahoma and beyond. The first topic the guys discuss is a research project following pronghorn in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Colter and his team have been collaring and tracking pronghorn to learn more about their home ranges, fawn recruitment, and most importantly, whether or not the population is declining or not. After a nice long chat about pronghorn, Colter talks about another similar research project on wild turkeys. It is no secret that numbers appear to be declining across much of the country and especially in the southeastern United States, and Colter sheds some light on a few reasons why a decline may be taking place, and some practical things hunters and conservationists can do to have a positive impact on those populations. And just because why the heck not, John and Colter finish the episode off with some good old wolf talk. Colter is fortunate enough to work on a grey wolf population study on Prince of Wales Island off the coast of Alaska. John talks a little bit about his experience with wolves in the north west while in college, and the guys talk about how sometimes the biggest obstacle in managing a species is just how cute they are. Story 1 (00:01:10): Richard Golden, a mid-30s 4Chan user living with his mother, was arrested for allegedly threatening to kill Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood. Chitwood had recently gone viral for a passionate rant against neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups in Florida. Golden's IP address was flagged by authorities after he posted a threatening message on 4Chan. In this video, we discuss the details of the case and the larger issues of online threats and hate speech.Story 2 (00:11:04): OpenAI research reveals that up to 80% of US workers may see their jobs impacted by GPTs. The study shows that some jobs, such as mathematicians, tax preparers, writers, and legal secretaries, will be more impacted than others, while occupations requiring science and critical thinking skills are less likely to be affected. Google and Microsoft have already announced that they would incorporate AI in their office products. In this video, we discuss the implications of GPTs and how they will shape the future of work. Story 3 (00:28:12): The Los Angeles Unified School District and Local 99 of the Service Employees International Union have reached a tentative agreement after a massive strike that lasted several days. The agreement provides raises of about 30% or more for the lowest-wage workers over time, affected by the length of service and current salary. Some workers will receive less than 30% and some more. The deal, which is not yet official and must be approved by union members, is not an across-the-board increase but spread out over time. If approved, the agreement could prevent campuses from being closed again for 420,000 students and spare workers from difficult job actions. The agreement reflects a broader context of the problems affecting working-class families and the importance of unions for working-class people. Unions allow workers to negotiate better wages, benefits, and working conditions than they could as individuals. They also help protect workers from arbitrary termination or layoffs, enforce workplace safety regulations, provide training and education opportunities, and ensure that all workers are treated fairly and equally. Unionized workers often receive better health care, retirement, and other benefits than non-unionized workers, and report higher job satisfaction and better morale.Shout Out To: @ViceNews @MotherboardVice @LATimes JOIN Inspired Disorder +PLUS Today! Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by telling what to expect on today's show, previewing that he'll be discussing Trump's alleged coming indictment and a new story just released by the Inquirer reporting that Philadelphia will have to pay $9.2M to protesters for using tear gas and rubber bullets during 2020 unrest. Dom offers his thoughts on the new bill, explaining why this is just another example of the hate levied toward police by a loud Left. Then, Dom returns to Donald Trump, taking calls from listeners who explain why they believe Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg is incredibly hypocritical. What does the available wild turkey research tell us and what gaps need to be filled moving forward? Dr. Chitwood walks us through 50+ years of published literature on eastern wild turkey vital rates. They literally incorporated all of the vital rates published on easterns into a model, to determine the status of population trajectories, and identify which factor was most important in driving those trajectories. This is the first release of the only known, all-inclusive meta-analysis on the wild turkey, so tune in, it is powerful. If you're thinking nesting or brooding success…think again.
