The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is the home of the most prominent open source projects used today, such as Kubernetes, Prometheus, ArgoCD, Linkerd and more. These projects fuel today's cloud native architectures and software release pipelines. With its immense growth, it has become difficult to keep tabs on the hundreds of new and evolving projects and specifications, the different working groups and technical advisory groups, the different community forums and events, and to see where it's all heading. I invited Chris Aniszczyk, CTO of the CNCF, to join me on this episode, to help us understand the CNCF landscape and evolution. We will also discuss the trends in observability and in the open source realm in general. Chris also has some interesting predictions to share.  Chris Aniszczyk is an open source executive and engineer with a passion for building a better world through open collaboration. He's currently a CTO at the Linux Foundation focused on developer relations and running the Open Container Initiative (OCI) / Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Furthermore, he's a partner at Capital Factory where he focuses on mentoring, advising and investing in open source and infrastructure focused startups. With the help of the CNCF, these projects can find common ground where possible.KubeCon is a conference organized by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. I attended the most recent KubeCon in Copenhagen. KubeCon was a remarkably well-run conference–and the attendees were excited and optimistic. As much traction as Kubernetes has, it is still very early days and it was fun to talk to people and forecast what the future might bring.At KubeCon, I sat down with Chris Aniszczyk and Dan Kohn, who are the COO and director of the CNCF.  I was curious about how to scale an organization like the CNCF. In some ways, it is like scaling a government. Kubernetes is growing faster than Linux grew, and the applications of Kubernetes are as numerous as those of Linux. Different constituencies want different things out of Kubernetes–and as those constituencies rapidly grow in number, how do you maintain diplomacy among competing interests? It's not an easy task, and that diplomacy has been established by keeping in mind lessons from previous open source projects.

Today on the podcast, we’re speaking with Chris Aniszczyk about the Linux Foundation and the important work they do to further the advancement of technology through open source initiatives. Mark and Mark are your hosts this week, and they begin by speaking with Chris about what the Linux Foundation is and how it’s unique. The Linux Foundation, while seeking to support open source projects, sets itself apart by also providing professional services such as marketing, technical writing, legal help, and running events. It acts as a parent foundation for smaller open source foundations like Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Node.js Foundation, and the Automotive Linux Foundation, which strives to bring open source to the automotive industry. Though typically companies can be leery of working with competitors, The Linux Foundation has been successful bringing companies together to create useful software that benefits everyone. Collaboration can be easier when done through the foundation. Chris also actively reaches out to companies in industries that don’t typically engage in open source practices and encourages them to consider working together to make their industry better. Specifically, Chris works with companies within CNCF and the Open Container Initiative. Chris Aniszczyk Chris Aniszczyk is an open source executive and engineer with a passion for building a better world through open collaboration. He’s currently a VP at the Linux Foundation where he co-founded the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and currently serves as CTO. Furthermore, he’s a partner at Capital Factory where he focuses on mentoring, advising and investing in open source and infrastructure focused startups. Throughout his career he has worked at the intersection of open source, internet scale organizations and the enterprise; at Twitter he created their open source program/strategy and led their open source efforts to change the infrastructure industry. In a previous life, he bootstrapped an open source startup, was a Gentoo maintainer, made many mistakes, lead and hacked on many developer tooling and Linux related projects. Red Hat's acquisition by IBM has been the biggest story of the year, dwarfing Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub. But the acquisition has been notable for many reasons, one of them is that this is 3rd largest IT acquisition after Broadcom and Dell-EMC. New Stack Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Alex Williams sat down with Lauren Cooney, Founder & CEO, Spark Labs, Tyler Jewell, CEO, WSO2 and Chris Aniszczyk, CNCF CTO/COO, to discuss the repercussions of this acquisition. In today’s episode we talk with Chris Aniszczyk. Chris is the COO of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, aka the CNCF. We spoke with Chris on site at DockerCon 2017 in Austin, TX earlier this year about the CNCF Master Program. CNCF is part of the Linux Foundation, of which he is a VP, and a home to many projects, including Kubernetes. Kubernetes is one of the fastest growing open source projects. We had a very interesting talk with Chris on how the ambassador programs of both the CNCF and Linux mirror other types of open source contributions, where participants themselves often have day jobs and work with commercial products based on open source projects. Chris also shares with us about open source culture and his extremely impressive involvement with CNCF, Linux and Twitter. The ambassador program at CNCF seeks to cultivate a worldwide community of people interested in spreading the notion of Cloud Native Computing.
