It's the battle of Glasgow, one of the most combustible matches in world football. CELTIC vs RANGERS is a fixture like no other, a vehicle for ancient blood feuds and sectarian strife. In the beginning of the 20th century, these two sets of fans marked the final whistle of a cup final by attempting to burn down Scotland's famed Hampden Park. After the 1980 final, supporters from both sides rioted on the pitch, fighting hand-to-hand and flinging bottles and more at each other until mounted police charged in to rescue control of the situation. This is a match that carries questions of what it means to be Scottish, baggage tied up in The Troubles of Northern Ireland and the quest for Scottish independence from Great Britain. And it's also, partly, about football.Joining us to trace this history and preview this Sunday's match is Chris McLaughlin, Sports News Correspondent at BBC Scotland and a man of Glasgow. He also covered the Scottish national team at EURO 2024 and offered some insight into a raucous atmosphere and an ultimately disappointing campaign. If you're enjoying The Football Weekend, please give us a rating and leave a review! It will help spread the word to more fans who might like a big match preview to start their Fridays. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We head back overseas for episode 140 with the big fella, Chris McLaughlin! The current overseas pro has been hooping in Hong Kong for some time now, has found himself some great experiences both on and off the court and continues to enjoy life and ball! A true islander at heart, Chris grew up in Ontario but always had a soft spot for “the rock”. As Chris started to physically grow, basketball became a sport he was interested in learning more about and getting better at. High school led to sharpening his craft and enjoying what came with it. It ended up being a family trip out west that is a great story on how Chris chose his future post-secondary school, the University of Victoria! After a tough rookie season, Chris starts to figure out the University game, leading his Vikes to multiple national appearances while collecting Canada West POY and All-Canadian awards along the way. In his senior year, the big man averaged 19.8 points and 10 rebounds a game, numbers don't lie! Chris is currently playing for Eastern in the Hong Kong league, and after having an MVP season he just had to run it back! This (possible) future teacher used to sub-teach at Mitch's school, has lots of great stories and reflections plus a positive perspective on life! You know the drill, time to tap in! Much respect and thanks to Chris for being with us, all the best for the upcoming season! In this highlight from our third episode, Elissa Looney, Director of Strategic Initiatives at Perlo Construction, is joined by repeat guests Todd Duwe and Chris McLaughlin to discuss the challenges of hard bid and negotiated procurement strategies. One of the biggest challenges in a hard bid is the factor of price. If subcontractors and project teams attempt to adjust a hard bid for potential risks they see, they will not be the lowest bidder and will therefore not be awarded the project. This creates a potential for more risk and conflict between the owner, contractor, and architect. Want to know more about Perlo? In this highlight reel, Perlo Construction's Chris McLaughlin, Vice President of Preconstruction, and Todd Duwe, Vice President of Business Development join host Elissa Looney to compare and contrast the benefits and challenges of hard bid and negotiated procurement strategies. The most significant differences when negotiating come down to potential savings and the ability to identify long-lead items and potential risks on a project. A hard bid, on the other hand, doesn't necessarily have a schedule that you are bound to, as the priority is based on the lowest price. Want to know more about Perlo? In this highlight reel from our third episode, Perlo Construction's Chris McLaughlin, Vice President of Preconstruction, and Todd Duwe, Vice President of Business Development join host Elissa Looney to discuss the benefits of negotiated and hard bid procurement strategies. In the case of hard bidding, the perceived benefit is that you're going to get the lowest price. For negotiated strategy, you can find out about long-lead items and, by bringing a contractor on board early, potential risks and project scopes can be identified and solutions can be planned in advance. In this highlight reel from our third episode, Elissa Looney, Director of Strategic Initiatives at Perlo Construction, is joined by repeat guests Todd Duwe and Chris McLaughlin to discuss two common terms when referencing how to procure a general contractor for a project. First, we have a hard bid strategy, which refers to when an owner has several contractors selected, and they are asked to give their best price on a project based on a set of documents. The second option is to do a negotiated strategy, where there is one specific contractor selected to come up with their price and complete their work. Want to know more about Perlo? Welcome back to Episode 3 of The Perlo Podcast! Podcast host Elissa Looney is joined by repeat guests Todd Duwe and Chris McLaughlin to compare and contrast two common terms in the construction industry when procuring a general contractor on a project: “hard bid” and “negotiated”. Chris McLaughlin, Vice President of Preconstruction Services, makes one particular comment that stands out – costs are not volatile, as they are only going up; it's a matter of how fast. Ep 042: In the United States, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) community is large; in fact, this group makes up approximately 4.5% of the country's total population. An estimated 2.7 million adults in the US are both LGBTQ+ and over 50, with 1.1 million over the age of 65. Despite their size and prevalence, the LGBTQ+ community still experiences myriads of hurdles and challenges, especially when it comes to healthcare. Roughly 56% of lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals and 70% of transgender individuals have encountered anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination when attempting to access healthcare. Further, the LGBTQ+ community faces unique challenges through the aging process. So what are those challenges and what resources are available to help overcome them? That's the premise of today's show! Our guest is the Associate Vice President of Community and Pediatric Services at Northern Light Acadia Hospital in Bangor, Maine. He has over 20 years of experience providing mental health services to youth and families across a variety of settings. He also is an adjunct faculty member at both UMaine in Orono and Husson University in Bangor and is the Clinical Consultant for the Bangor YMCA. He serves on the Maine Board of Social Work Licensing and is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care. Locally, he was recognized in 2019 for his advocacy work with LGBTQ+ youth and was named Health Care Social Worker of the Year in 2019 by the Maine Hospital Association and the Maine Chapter of the SSWLHC. Nationally, he was the SSWLHC's 2019 recipient of the Eleanor Clark Award for Innovative Programs in Patient Care for his work on youth suicide prevention. In the Spring of 2020, he was named the University of Maine School of Social Work's Alumni of the Year. Please welcome Christopher McLaughlin BACK to the Retirement Success in Maine Podcast! EP 019: A key point in our financial planning conversations with our clients as they near or go through retirement is, “WHO do you want to spend your time with in retirement?” and many times the answer is focused around their children and/or grandchildren. But, how do you develop AND maintain relationships with younger generations? What are some common mistakes that are made when dealing with two generations with differing value systems, interests, and tastes? How can technology help with building a better relationship with your grandchildren? Listen in as we ask these questions to Chris McLaughlin, Associate Vice President of Community and Pediatric Services for Northern Light Health Acadia Hospital with over 20 years of experience providing mental health services to youth and families across a variety of settings. [8:14] How can an adult develop a better relationship with someone 20-30 years younger than them? [20:52] It's one thing to connect with a younger child, but how do you maintain that relationship throughout different adolescent stages? [24:21] What are some common mistakes you see the older generations making when dealing with younger generations? [26:30] What are some common myths or stereotypes about this generation of kids, and are those new themes or repeating? [32:35] How does someone who feels unprepared to provide care for a child or grandchild seek assistance? [40:11] How can someone with (financial) resources, use those resources to help with their familial relationships? What works and what doesn't work? [43:08] From the younger generation's perspective, what are some things that may cause them to turn off to that relationship with their parents or grandparents? [46:48] Are there ways to use technologies, like Zoom, to better the relationships? [49:48] What is Retirement Success for Chris? [56:05] Ben, Abby, and Curtis wrap-up the episode. [58:11]
