He's a classically trained musician who has attained prominence as a jazz improviser. Chris has developed a systematic and comprehensive approach to teaching improvisation, empowering musicians of all levels to unlock their innate musical creativity. He integrates insights from meditation and yoga into his pedagogy, adding a unique dimension to the learning process. This interview includes an overview of Chris' methodology for learning to improvise, a demonstration of how he integrates meditation into his approach, and background on how he developed his philosophy and what effect it has had on musicians. The musical interlude features a fragment from this presentation by Dr. Susan Rowland: • Jungian Arts-Base... The music was composed and performed by Bradley Vines.
Improvisation has not traditionally been part of most young classical musicians' training. But should it be?Research suggests that the answer may be yes, and that there are a number of benefits that improvisation could provide. Not just to our playing, but to our mental state on stage as well.Read the full article for all the nerdy details: Why Improvisation Should Be Part of Every Young Musician's TrainingBut...if you're new to improvising, where does one begin?Well, whether you're a complete newbie, or an experienced improviser who's been frustrated by inconsistencies or feeling inhibited under pressure, have your instrument handy and block off 45-60 minutes on Wednesday, April 26th, from 2pm-3pm Eastern (calculate that in your timezone here).Violinist (and childhood Suzuki buddy) Christian Howes will be teaching a live, free, play-along class where he'll share three approaches to improvisation that can work for you, and explain why other methods may not have worked before. You'll also learn (and experience) the difference between learning harmony and doing improvisation. And you'll get to do lots of playing the whole time (muted, of course)!Sign up for the free improv session here: Free, live, play-along improvisation workshop with Christian Howes====Why do things sound better at home than they do on stage? If you've been confused (and frustrated) by the inconsistency of your performances, I put together a FREE 4-minute quiz called the Mental Skills Audit, which will help you pinpoint your mental strengths and weaknesses, and figure out what exactly to adjust and tweak in your preparation for more consistently optimal performances. You can take the Mental Skills Audit online at bulletproofmusician.com/msa. It's 100% free, takes only 4 minutes, and you'll get a downloadable PDF with a personalized breakdown of where you stand in six key mental skill areas, plus curated articles that will help you adjust and tweak your preparation for more consistently optimal performances. The Jason Anick/Jason Yeager Quartet draws on the wide swath of musical interests of its co-leaders, blending straight-ahead and post-bop jazz, world music, funk and pop, eagerly embracing what Anick and Yeager have defined as “jazz without borders.” Their debut album, United, garnered rave reviews including 4.5 stars from Downbeat Magazine. YOUR FALSE HUMILITY IS HURTING YOU. We all can struggle with taking money in return for our services. It’s hard to ask for what you need. My father sold life insurance. He taught me a lot about not being ashamed of selling something that adds value to another person’s life. That’s why, for this Five Minute Friday, I revisited a conversation I had with my brother Christian Howes about how artists can set themselves up for financial success. It’s all about knowing your worth. If you are making other people’s lives better or easier, you should be comfortable putting yourself out there as a business. Learn how to believe in your value by using the power of selling in Episode 771. In This Episode You Will Learn: The most important thing that sets people up to make money from their art (1:41) What Christian learned from his dad about selling (2:30) Why you need to know your value (4:10) About the danger of “false humility” (5:25) Follow me on: Instagram @lewishowes Twitter @LewisHowes Facebook: Lewis Howes

There are so many great ideas and concepts that these amazing musicians bring up and I would like to share with you some of my favourites! This is great for beginner jazz violinists who want a little direction once in a while. This episode is sponsored by Ithaca Strings and Headway Audio. Ithaca Strings www.ithacastring.com/ Ithaca Strings IS Eric Aceto, a luthier, violinist and producer of the ISI dual pickup system. This system is by far the best and most honest sounding violin pickup system on the market right now! It blends an Electret microphone with a bridge pickup, both attaching to a stereo jack out under the chin rest. This means you get the solid sound of the pick up blended with the sweeter sound of the Electret mic without heavy cables attached to your instrument. Eric also makes amazing instruments and has made both pickups and violins for Jean Luc Ponty, Zach Brock, Matt Glaser and many other amazing musicians. Headway Audio https://www.headwaymusicaudio.com/ Headway was founded in the UK in 2006 by John Littler, they make pickups and preamps for string instruments. Most famously they make 'The Band' pickup for violin, viola, cello and bass, which is a very reasonably priced pickup that wraps around the body of the instrument. They make the amazing EDB2, an acoustic instrument preamp that can blend 2 channels of audio to a balanced output ready for the sound desk. This is perfect for blending a microphone and a pickup on the same instrument, as is needed with Eric Aceto's dual system. The EDB2 also has 5 band EQ, a notch filter and the ability to power each channel differently. Its an amazing piece of kit! Christian Howes Christian Howes is a jazz violinist, educator and composer. Hailing from Columbus, OH, genre-defying violinist Christian Howes was classically trained on the string instrument from the age of five; an early signpost of the success that would follow him throughout his life. A soloist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra at 16. Working with the legendary guitar pioneer Les Paul. Praise and accolades from prestigious jazz publications JazzTimes and Downbeat. Christian continuously defies the boxed-in expectations of the violin as he gracefully explores genre after genre. He's plucked and bowed his way from one accomplishment to the next without letting personal detours hinder him. As a musician, educator and overall altruistic human being, he unceasingly uses his prodigious talent to expand the lives of others through his teaching and supporting multiple social causes. Our conversation touches on all these areas of his life. Enjoy!
