Inspired by a highly motivating music teacher, Davis pursued a career in music education and has been teaching for more than 50 years.

He was the Pacific Symphony's composer-in-residence from 1991 to 1998, composing numerous works for that orchestra. A number of his works have become standards in the concert band repertoire.
