The Lumbee Nation counts 55,000 members, and although they are not federally recognized and have no tribal trust land, they have a strong cultural identity. The possibility of federal recognition is a factor in who members support in the presidential race. Across the state, the smaller, but federally recognized, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has political and economic muscle and opposes Lumbee recognition. We'll explore the dynamics of navigating the Native vote in a critical swing state. GUESTS John Cummings (Lumbee Tribe), chairman of the Robeson County Board of Commissioners Christopher Reed (enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians), vice chair of the North Carolina District 11 Democratic Party Jesalyn Kaziah (Lumbee), executive director of the Triangle Native American Society

Do you remember the last conversation you had that challenged your way of thinking or inspired you to act? A conversation that changed your mind, your heart, or maybe even your life?  To help us have more meaningful conversations more often, Father Dave welcomes Dr. Christopher Reed to the show.  Dr. Reed has a Ph.D.. in human communication and believes that dialogues that transform hearts and strengthen relationships are sacred and he shares a blueprint for having more meaningful interactions in his new book, “Sacred Conversations: How God Wants Us To Communicate.” Dr. Reed begins by explaining his “Sacred Conversations Model to Father Dave:” The model itself is laid out like an Ikea set of instructions, do step 1 before you do step 2 and the components are invitation, we can open ourselves to those invitations, we can open ourselves to the spirit, invite people into them. Intention, what is the aim of the conversation.  Inquiry, very powerful, Jesus was a master of inquiry.  Illumination and integration. And at the center, the sixth component is love. It all starts with love and compassion for the other person, the face of Christ that we see in them right in front of us. If we start with love, we can't go wrong.” RELATED: 7 Steps for Navigating Crucial Conversations Dr. Reed explains that part of the reason he wrote the book is because there are many secular books on having tough conversations, but there haven't been any simple, accessible, well-researched books on Catholic dialogue and how Christians should engage in dialogue with one another.  He says, “Sacred Conversations” is a “blending of science and Scripture” that can be used for all of life's moments.  Father Dave points out that the book is also drawing on the Word of God, sacred traditions and Jesus' model of living. Father Dave and Dr. Reed go on to discuss the chapter called “Rules of the Road” which highlights some of the rules of sacred conversations, like having compassion and not forcing a conversation. Father Dave asks about the rule, “follow through on your good intentions.” LISTEN: Jonathan Merritt on Sacred Language “Commit to the process,” Dr. Reed responds. “See it through. A sacred conversation is a ‘helping' conversation; it's a build-your-brother or- sister-up conversation…and so all other intentions beyond that should be questioned and reflected upon, and then once we commit to that ‘helping' or ‘seeking' conversation, follow the process through, see what emerges, ask for guidance (which is another rule).  Then, when we get to that moment of grace, follow it through - what do you want to do with that? What small steps could you take toward a better outcome, a better version of yourself, a better relationship? Father Dave wraps up by wondering what happens if the other person in the conversation doesn't want to give anything, “Doesn't it take two to tango?” he asks. “This is a conversational dance. It's like improvisational jazz,” Dr. Reed explains.  “But we have to learn how to play our scales before we can truly gracefully improvise together. You know, we have to learn the basic steps of a dance before we can, chacha and Samba and move fluently together.”

"We know that 93% of what is communicated in a conversation is non-verbal. That's a combination of our body language - Are we leaning in? Have we established eye contact? Have we put down our phone to signal to the other person that we're attentive? - so we have to be mindful of that as we prepare for sacred conversation," says Dr. Christopher Reed, author of the new book "Sacred Conversations: How God Wants Us to Communicate." Dr. Reed is a Christian, a husband and a human communication teacher, consultant and coach. Christopher says that the Holy Spirit led him to the work of Sacred Conversations. He began studying human communication in 1998 at Western Michigan University and completed his doctorate degree and gained postdoctoral experience as a consultant in the University of Michigan's Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. Today, his interest in human communication, relationships, organizational engagement and helping people discover and use their God-given talents is stronger than ever. His Sacred Conversations ministry is not just helping leaders, but everyone struggling to connect on a deeper level. This captivating new book reveals how everyday interactions can lead to spiritual growth, deeper connections and meaningful impact. Rudy redoubles his efforts to get out of the steel mill where his father works when his best friend (Christopher Reed) dies in an accident there. Overcoming his dyslexia thanks to his friend and tutor, D-Bob (Jon Favreau), Rudy gains admission to Notre Dame and begins to fight his way onto the school's fabled football team. The world is changing. At irregular intervals, whole swathes of the world meld into one another, creating completely new landscapes. Where there were mountains yesterday, now a great forest resides. Where sweeping plains existed, now a great canyon plunges into the deep. Where there were hills, steep mountains rise. Rainforests turn to desert and deserts into grasslands, all in a matter of minutes or hours. There is no telling when a meld will come, or what causes it. Only certain signs can be read, that normally lead to a meld happening, but not always. Such as raindrops hanging still in the air, or sound echoing where it should not. Smoke will no longer rise, but drift. Water no longer flows but remains static. This all is highly erratic and you have to see it to believe it.In this world, most peoples are nomadic by necessity rather than choice. There are some who attempt at sedentary lives, but when a meld catches them, they are forced to flee and start over, or join those who spend their existence on the move.“The society” our hero belongs to is not sedentary nor nomadic, instead they are of a unique sort that combine the best of both worlds, living in houses that are built on wheels. They hold livestock and use their animals to move their villages around when the quillers and soothsayers report a meld could be imminent. In this society, they have a religious system that deals with predestination and prophecy. Every member of this tribe knows these prophesies and treats them as fact. The Hierophant is the head of the religion, and is said to have seen beyond the merging worlds into the one-ness that is all. His officers, the heads of the church are called soothsayers, and their subordinates again are called seers. The leader of the society is called the magister, and is the head of a circle of important figures who lead the society together, called the council. Its members are councilors, but hold different offices within the council. Everyone in the society gets an education from the seers and soothsayers. This makes the society literate and educated. They can read-write and keep records, traditions and religions. This is why they produce quillers as well. The father of James Reed, named Christopher Reed, is the assistant-quiller of the council, a very important man within the society.James Reed's mother, Emma Reed-Crawling, is a seer, so both parents hold some standing within society.James' older brother is called Chris Reed. He is seen by most as the chosen one of one of the prophecies. This caused him to walk beside his own shoes. In fact, Chris can talk and boast a lot, but not much more. When Chris was young, he survived a very brutal meld on his own, in the wild. And came walking into town without a scratch on him, two days later. Which caused him to be seen as the one.Beside the society, there are many other groups of people in the world. Many have been heard of or have been encountered, as a world that changes greatly makes for very mobile societies. Most societies try to find their way in the world as well as they can, dealing with other societies in trade and knowledge exchange. While there are some tribes who prefer dominance and violence: The Seekers are one of those tribes, and they are a bane to the society as much as to any other tribe out there. Over the years, cinema and sports have crossed paths countless times. But it takes something very special to stand out in the genre. Philip Boone of Sports Flix, Just Give Us Clix joins the show to share his own longtime love for Rudy. We'll discuss why the 1993 movie has become such a classic, whether we would be able to persist in Rudy's situation, and how Jerry Goldsmith's score is so integral to the stirring earnestness that so many fans hold dear.
