Valentine's Day is approaching quickly, and another major American midwinter celebration, the Super Bowl, is just past. Chain restaurants gear up for both of them, each in their own way. Pizza concepts have long offered heart-shaped pies for Valentine's Day, but doughnut chains are following that lead and offering their core products in heart shapes too. Pat and Bret discussed how wings are the most popular appetizer ordered with pizza, making them perhaps the most common combination in American foodservice. They also discussed how invented holidays such as National Pizza Day are, in fact, great sales drivers, giving people a reason, no matter how small, to order something they love. For the podcast's interview this week, Bret interviewed Donnie Madia, co-owner of One-Off Hospitality in Chicago. He discussed the restaurant group's new catering arm, how his restaurants that were featured in the hit FX TV series "The Bear" benefitted from the exposure and his philosophy about the future of fine dining.

FX Shogun TV Show Review. In this episode, we review the FX TV show Shogun. We discuss the show's plot, characters, and acting, and we give our overall thoughts on the series. The FX TV show Shogun which also aired on Hulu, is a historical drama that tells the story of John Blackthorne, an English pilot who is shipwrecked in Japan in the 1600s. Blackthorne is taken captive by the local daimyo, Lord Toranaga, and he must learn to adapt to the unfamiliar culture and customs of Japan. The show is based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell, and it stars Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorne aka Anjin, Hiroyuki Sanada as Toranaga and Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko. Shogun is a well-made and entertaining series that offers a fascinating glimpse into Japanese history and culture. And be sure to leave comments and your thoughts and opinions. You can also listen to the podcast on your favorite platform and visit the Los Wise Guys website below!loswiseguys.comhttps://linktr.ee/loswiseguysAnd be sure to follow the guys at:Dan - @lwg_danrosadoEslam - @lwg_eslamDisco - @emperor.disco#shogun #hulu #fx #samurai #tvreview #tvshows #review #reaction

One of the most hotly contested issues of our time - the US-Mexico border - stretches more than 2,000 miles. It's protection is led by a thin-line of overworked and underfunded US Border Patrol agents. Vincent Vargas, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan with the US Army's 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, later served with the Border Patrol. His new book, BORDERLINE: Defending the Homefront, which publishes November 14, 2023, provides a thorough insiders look at just how dangerous defending the border is. Vargas, who was one of the stars of the FX TV series, Mayans, hits on some key issues about the border situation including: *Border Patrol has more agents of Latino/Hispanic heritage than any other race, debunking the myth that all BP agents are racist *DC law makers don't know the challenges on a day to day basis for BP agents nor do they have the boots-on-the-ground experience *The border is two issues simultaneously: immigration AND homeland security *Dealing with dangerous water rescues as well as violent drug traffickers and human trafficking coyotes *He has great empathy for those making the dangerous journey to try to get to America for a better life as his own grandmother came to the US as a young girl as an undocumented immigrant *He is straightforward about the BP mission - sympathy aside there is a job to do to protect the border and the security of America *He points out the overlooked US policy to assist in helping immigrants to become US citizens legally *Vargas notes that it is the US's job to educate and facilitate safe and legal entry for those wanting to come to America for a better life

The fourth season of Mayans MC averaged a 0.19 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 607,000 viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). Compared to season three, that's down by 24% in the demo and down by 19% in viewership. While these numbers don't include further delayed or streaming viewing, they are a very good indicator of how a show is performing, especially when compared to others on the same channel. There can be other economic factors involved in a show's fate, but typically the higher-rated series are renewed and the lower-rated ones are cancelled. The playwright turned screenwriter talks about what it's like to write material based on real people for the FX TV series. "My job was to adopt 20-something Monica [Lewinsky]'s point of view… and so I wrote based on Monica's story, and then I had the incredible asset of Monica Lewinsky herself reading my scripts and giving me feedback, so I basically trusted that in the writing of it, the scripts would reflect on how Monica experienced it."   Sarah talks about her beginnings as a writer and how it doesn't matter where you're from. "You need something that's good on the page; that's all you need. You can live in Idaho, you can live in Ottawa, you don't have to live in The East Village or Santa Monica… if you are in any position to be able to write, I do think that having faith in what you put on the page is really what matters."   Don't forget to subscribe to the Write On Podcast on iTunes!   Now available on Google Podcasts!

Bull Diego Avello joins us on the podcast to talk about the latest single from Bull y Los Bufalos, his journey from Spain to Austin, TX and his love of hipsters. The new song, 'One with the King' was inspired by Bull's recent impromptu to visit Graceland shortly after they reopened and his intense literal time "alone" with the King. Inspired by this experience, Bull took pen to paper with a clear picture of what he wanted the song and video to capture. The Austin Bufalo Chapter, Kostamos Yiacoumis, Jonas Saks, and Skunk Manhattan were summed and quickly tracked the song with engineer Rob "I'll be right back" Hinton at Mesa Recording Studios in Del Valley. About a week later the video shoot, featuring the band and a "ghostly" Elvis took place at the Gaslight-Baker Theatre in Lockhart, TX. Earlier in 2020 the Bufalos released a live album recored live at one of Austin's premier live music venues, Come and Take it Live and played the Gibson Guitars stage at the 2020 NAMM show in Anaheim. Bull y Los Bufalos releases include three studio albums, one live album and a handful of singles with select songs featured in the popular FX TV show, The Mayans.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Donald Trump recently opined, in a now infamous with Laura Ingraham for Fox News, that Democratic Party Presidential candidate Joe Biden was being controlled by "people in the dark shadows". This, of course, should come as no surprise given that conspiratorial mutterings about globalist elites hellbent on destroying the United States of America has become a hallmark of Trump's base. In fact, one can find ideations of a paranoid variety amongst rather visible elements of the American right-wing going back to the day of Senator Joe McCarthy and the Red Scare as well as in right-wing media outlets and organizations like WorldNetDaily and the John Birch Society. Even prior to Trump, figures like Alex Jones and Jerome Corsi promoted what historian Richard Hofstadter referred to as "The Paranoid Style in American Politics". In the 1990's, the militia and "Patriot" movement were driven by fears that the Clinton administration, specifically after Ruby Ridge and Waco, would usher in draconian martial law with the help of agencies like FEMA or, in some theories, the United Nations. Interestingly, then First Lady Hillary Clinton was roundly mocked at this time for offering a paranoid alternative to the right's vision of dystopia being ushered in by her husband. There existed, she said, a "vast right wing conspiracy" to undermine Bill Clinton's Presidency. This, of course, was roundly mocked as the delusional rantings of a "moonbat" or "wingnut". But was Clinton's accusation completely unfounded? Has the American right-wing been projecting when it lobs allegations of unpatriotic and sinister plots against Democrats and the Left? Veteran journalist Anne Nelson makes the case in her new book, Shadow Network: Media, Money, and the Secret Hub of the Radical Right, that the American Right, specifically through a sorely underdiscussed and shadowy organization, has been engaging in a certain kind of subterfuge that isn't far off from being a "vast right wing conspiracy". In this explosive new book Nelson, whose journalistic exploits includes covering the U.S. support of right-wing death squads in El Salvador during the Reagan Presidency, details the under-the-radar machinations of the Council for National Policy. Modeled as a conservative equivalent to the Council on Foreign Relations, a favorite target of right-wing paranoia, the CNP claims 501(c) 3 status. But, as Nelson notes, the CNP operates in a completely different way than the CFR. According to Nelson, it acts as a network that connects the right's ideologues to the money people that can fund their movements. Anne Nelson joins us on this edition of Parallax Views to tell the whole story of how this organization has sought to undermine democratic processes in the USA for decades. Among the topics covered: How three figures, Paul Weyrich, Morton Blackwell, and Richard Viguerie came together to help form the CNP with evangelical pastor and bestselling author of the Left Behind series Tim LaHaye as its President; Weyrich's curious comments on voting and the electoral majority; Viguerie's book Takeover: The 100-Year War for the Soul of the GOP and How Conservatives Can Finally Win It and the comments contained within it concerning Hillary Clinton's accusations of a "vast right wing conspiracy". - Putting the CNP in context; the war between supporters of the Barry Goldwater campaign and "Rockefeller Republicans" in the era before the CNP's founding; the Southern Baptist Church purges that preluded that CNP's founding; the arch-conservative Phyllis Schlafly, now the subject of the FX TV drama Mrs. America. - The Democratic Party's failures, including the neglect of "Fly Over Country" and the decay of the New Deal Coalition, that Anne criticizes in the book for leaving the CNP with a base to propagandize. - How the CNP ties into the U.S. support of death squads in El Salvador. - The CNP and the media; how the decline of media, journalism, and newspapers has created a fertile environment for the CNP's propaganda efforts; the deleterious effects of Ronald Reagan rolling back the Fairness Doctrine. - How connected are the Koch Bros. to the CNP?; how much of the CNP's agenda is driven by its financial backer's desire profits rather than religious beliefs of its idealogues? - The CNP vs. the CFR; the CNP's 501(c) 3 status - The CNP in the era of Donald Trump; the CNP's initial support of Ted Cruz over Donald Trump; the deal that the CNP cut with the Trump Presidency; the CNP's connections to the coronavirus pandemic through "America's Frontline Doctors" and Dr. [CENSORED] as outlined in her new Washington Spectator piece "Anatomy of Deception: Team Trump Deploys Doctors to Push Fake Cure for COVID" (see: hydroxychloroquine). What can be better than a magic trick on the radio?! We will be talking to magician Steve Spill. Plus all the regular Dereck and Kay you love, Weird News and Hot Topics. Steve Spill has spent his entire life performing magic, producing magic shows around the globe in places such as the French Riviera's Cannes Film Festival, Universal Studios Hollywood, Harrah's Tahoe, and Toronto's Massey Hall. Among the projects on which Spill has provided expertise are the CBS TV special “The World Greatest Magicians,” and the FX TV series “Penn & Teller's Sin City Spectacular.” Spill grew up at the Magic Castle, a private club for magicians in Hollywood where his father, Sandy Spillman, was a manager in the 1960's and the young aspiring magician was tutored by industry icons such as Dai Vernon, Charlie Miller and Francis Carlyle. At 21, he started working as a magic bartender at the Jolly Jester saloon in Aspen, Colorado, where he perfected and became known among magicians, for his interpretations of a number classic and original sleight-of-hand tricks. Author of 'I Lie For Money' "Steve Spill has been a pal of Penn's and mine since the 1970's. While we were still working for tips and eating dirt at fairs, Steve was running one of the classiest comedy magic clubs in the country, and still does (his current one is in Santa Monica). Nobody knows more about magic from the inside than Steve. And most important, Steve and I share the deepest bond of all: we both swallow needles." - Teller of Penn & Teller.

Succotash Epi24: Kickstartin' It With Dean Haglund

Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast

This is Episode 24 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast! We’ve got clips. We’ve got the Burst O’ Durst. We’ve got an interview with actor/comedian/artist and podcaster Dean Haglund to talk about his exciting new Kickstarter project. We’ve got a funny song by comedian/songstress/chanteuse Karen Kilgariff from her album “Behind You”. A classic Henderson’s Pants commercial perhaps. And that about it. Dean Haglund A little bit more about Mr. Haglund. Fans of the XFiles and The Lone Gunmen know him as Langley, the gangly long-haired conspiracy wonk. He's also renowned for his improv and standup comedy chops. And Succotashians have heard Dean and his partner-in-podcasting, Phil Leirness, declared by me to be "podcast royalty" (given the tenure of their show Chillpak Hollywood Hour) when I interviewed them back in Succotash Epi4. In addition to those performance nuggets, Dean is also a talented painter and using that skill to create Shock N' Awesome, a graphic novel tracing the adventures and travails of a trio of intrepid journalists that may (or may not) bear a resemblance to three conspiracy theorists you might recognize. This is your chance to jump in and be a part of something cool. Click on the Kickstarter link over there on the right-hand side or just click here. Starting immediately, the Succotash podcasts are being re-broadcast along with a gaggle of other podcasts over Clutch & Wiggle Entertainment, the home of…Clutch & Wiggle. We delighted to be asked to be part of that crew! So now you can add that outlet as well as iTunes, Stitcher and our own homesite as a place to get the latest serving of Succotash!  I've been making an effort to drop a bit more comedy-related music into the show. After listening to Karen Kilgariff sing as a guest on the recent 100th episode of the Walking The Room podcast with Greg Behrendt and Dave Anthony, I bought her album, Behind You, from BandCamp.com. And loved it! So I contacted her via Twitter and asked if we could feature her music on Succotash. This epi we start in with her song, Look At Your Phone. What podcast clips have we got on tap for you in Epi24? So glad you asked... Dead Authors Podcast A monthly podcast with Paul F. Tompkins as H.G. Wells, using his time travel technology to bring in deceased authors to mix it up, reveal something of themselves and reflect on our world from their unique perspective. His guests in this clip are Paul Adomian as Friedrich Nietzsche and Paul Scheer as H.P. Lovecraft. Clutch & Wiggle Rob and Craig (you can figure out which is Clutch and which is Wiggle) are likely the only guys doing their podcast from atop an air hockey table.  These guys are true podcast enthusiasts. This Week with Larry Miller Larry Miller is still recuperating from a nasty fall he took over a month ago. Our clip is show producer Jeff Fox filling the audience in on Larry's progress and health. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Larry! Laughspin Podcast Editor-in-chief at Laughspin.com, Dylan Gadino, and his co-host Mike Gogen bring the latest in comedy news and the comedy business in general (including podcasts) every week. They're just getting started and this clip is from their Epi3. Give a listen! Comedy A Go Go Our friend Dave Nelson hosts this show which often brings us insightful interview with comedians who perform across the spectrum, from emcess to headliners. This clip is from a recent show featuring W. Kamau Bell, who is still touring with his Laughter Against The Machine show (co-starring Nato Green and Janine Brito. At the same time, he's hosting a new FX TV show porduced by Chris Rock. Cocktails & Kimonos Retep and Big D bring their booming announcer pipes to the podcast world. They're got a point of view on a variety of issues including the ones in this clip that begins with a story about a woman who overdosed on coke...Coca-Cola, that is. The Man Cave Podcast Our first clip this show was from a monthly podcast. Jeff Schaeffer and Bobby Shortle ambitiously host a daily show. It's pretty well put together, too: Regular features, chats about sports, movies and pop culture-y things. This clip is a couple of weeks oldb, but with the success of the Avengers movie, I thought their discussion of how Iron Man might be featured in the film was apropos. Shotgun Storyworthy The monthly gameshow spinoff of the Storyworthy podcast, both hosted by Christine Blackburn and Hannes Phinney, is a hoot and a half. A dozen contestants are given the subject for a story by spinning the show's "Wheel of Truth", and then without any prep time, have to tell their story in one minute. The winner gets a prize. You get a lot of laughs. Burst O' Durst This episode our intrepid pundit Will Durst dips his wit into the steaming pool of Republican vice-presidential considerations. Nasty business. All right. That's it. It's even better than it reads so get listening! As always, please remember to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
