We are all guilty of making poor decisions. And sometimes we say to ourselves, what were we thinking? Why did I do such a foolish thing? And the answer is this. You have been deceived. And one of the things that we're going to learn in the passage of scripture that we're going to study today is that if we think in a specific way, it lessens the likelihood that we will be deceived by the enemy. And what does that weigh? Here at Focus, we are Bible people. Not a Sunday goes by where the word of God is not opened, proclaimed, and the good news presented. When a church goes through a book one verse at a time it is called Expository Teaching. This is what we are going to do together this summer. Our heart's desire is a well balanced diet. A season with expository teaching helps keep the church on the same page. In this sermon, we continue with Romans Chapter 8. Luke chapter 3 picks up the Gospel story with John who's down at the Jordan River, announcing that God wants everyone to turn from wickedness and prove their commitment by being ritually washed in the river's water. The Prophet Isaiah predicted his coming. Everyone was speculating that John is the Messiah, but he says to hang tight, the Messiah is just around the corner and is the true Passover Lamb. In fact, he tells them that the messiah is going to have a "winnowing fork" (3:17 NRSV) that he'll use to separate the harvested grain into one a pile, but he'll burn the remaining chaff with fire that will never stop blazing. Don't be the chaff. In other news, John's been saying that Herod married his brother's wife, which is against the law (Leviticus 18:16) which was only one of many wicked acts. Herod responds by tossing John in prison. But not until after Jesus shows up with the Trinity to be baptized. Luke includes a long genealogy of Jesus, whose lineage via Mary and Joseph can be traced back all the way to Adam—yeah, that Adam—and therefore to God. It's tough to read this list, which is about as interesting as reading an old phone book, but we'll include some fun highlights. And we'll sweeten the deal by showing the Book of Ruth predicted the reign of King David over a hundred years early and ultimately, the coming of Jesus Christ and our relationship to him as the church.
On this episode all the regulars are back in the studio to continue answering your questions. First, in Phil Wickham's “1000 Names,” he lists many names off that he calls God. Are these from the Bible? What do they mean? Second, Calvary teaches book-by-book, line-by-line. Is this the best way of teaching? Why do others teach differently? Last, what are we to make of God's seemingly contradictory attitudes insofar as he “loves sinners” and “hates all who do wrong?” Can this be reconciled?

Paul said he was "counted faithful" - are you "faithful"? Can you teach or train one to be "faithful"?
