We are starting something new for 2025 where we cover a group of movies revolving around one topic: an actor, a director, theme, a genre, or whatever else. Coincidentally, we picked Jackie Chan as our first topic which brings us back to one of the reasons Kevin and Ben started this thing in 2022: being big fans of JC. Chris "picked" this one since we've been giving him a hard time about it for over a year, and it just so happens that Kevin gifted him the Criterion Blu-ray set in December. Listen as we discuss the film, its ins and outs, modern action films, Jackie's (1980s) authenticity as a movie star, and a slew of other points. We'll be back soon with our second Chan installment of 2025. Enjoy! Our episode catalogue: https://searchersfilmpodcast.podbean.com/

We didn't plan to have back to back episodes on West Virginia but here we are. Substantive Cinema is back and this may be our most obscure film pick yet, but it's a great one! Matewan (1987 Dir. John Sayles) is a historical drama about the labor strikes in a WV coal mining town that lead to a bloody shootout in the streets. Not only is it an excellent film (with an Oscar nomination for Haskell Wexler's cinematography), but it's also a good history lesson for those of us who didn't grow up in West Virginia and were not taught about it in school. Unions and workers rights will likely be the topic of a future Reflects episode and we thought this might be a nice way in as well as nice introduction to an underappreciated film. And since it's not the easiest movie to track down, we'll be giving away a Criterion Blu-ray to one lucky listener. Stay tuned on socials! Based on a novel by Cameron Crowe, in which the Rolling Stone reporter went undercover in a California high school to capture the true spirit of a generation, this funny, poignant, and, yes, fast-moving comedy put several stars on the map and forever changed the way America looks at carrots.Ian and Don discuss how their understanding of the film has evolved over the years; what sets it apart from other sex comedies of its time, and the surprising ways in which it still rings true. Also, Ian talks about some of the special features on the new Criterion disc, including a fascinating 1982 Q&A with Heckerling at the American Film Institute.Show Links:Watch the Fast Times at Ridgemont High trailer.Watch last year's celebrity script reading of Fast Times at Ridgemont High (you will NOT believe this shit!).Order the Fast Times at Ridgemont High Criterion Blu-ray.Get educated with Don Shanahan at Every Movie Has a Lesson. And be sure to subscribe to his wonderful new podcast, Cinephile Hissy Fit!Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

It's the most wonderful time of the year for two people who buy too many movies and are currently on quarantine...Mint in Box. Jonathan (@Berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) have selected movies to watch this month that one of them own and have never seen...thus the DVD/Bluray...or digital file is still in the box left in mint condition. May seemed like the right time to do this even before the world was ravaged by a virus. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 4 - Midnight Cowboy (1969) Both Jonathan and Corey bought Midnight Cowboy (1969) on Criterion Blu-ray after it was highly recommended to them during an interview way back when. Jonathan actually watched his, but Corey has not and thus it finds its way into this list. Directed by John Schlesinger and starring Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, and Sylvia Miles the film is about "A naive hustler travels from Texas to New York City to seek personal fortune, finding a new friend in the process." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

The hat always knows (as proven by the miraculous event of Ryan wishing for 1922’s “Häxan” to be this week’s film and Tim actually pulling it from the hat)! And boy oh boy, what a wonderful, witchy, delight this film was. Grabbing the brand new Criterion Blu-ray gave us all we could ask for. The brilliant imagery and masterful art direction of this haunting cinematic experience earned an unwavering double “buy” from the guys.
