Today's episode if focused on exposing and explaining the myths that constituted Joe Biden's response to the recent Uvalde shooting In it he makes false claims about: So-called "assault weapons" The assault weapon ban The evil puppy hating, father raping, baby killers of "the gun lobby" The frequency of school shootings & mass shootings in comparison to other countries The multi-contextual, deceptive, non-argument that any restriction on natural rights and civil liberties are justified if it saves even one life Every one of those claims can be, and, subsequently will be objectively disproven by the end of this episode. Today's guest is on a mission to create a global surf brand - despite at one point having to write a farewell letter to his wife and kids 80kms off the coast of Sumatra! It's a roller-coaster ride of an episode 476 of The (award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing Show thanks to American Express.   Long-time listener and Surefire Boards founder Mick Slattery shares how he's on a mission to create a global surf and stand-up paddle board brand, despite some business and personal challenges that have been thrown his way.   A little bit more about Surefire Boards' Mick Slattery … Mick Slattery is the founder of Surefire Boards, a small stand-up paddle and surf board business based in NSW. He started the business as a side-hustle in 2009 before going full-time a few years later, only to contract an auto-immune disease that nearly crippled his dream.   Mick made the trip up from Sydney to join me in my Noosa studio where we  talked about: The challenges of taking the business from a side-hustle to a full-time concern What to do when a price war starts in your industry How contracting an auto-immune disease changed everything The joys of manufacturing in China And plenty more   “I want Surefire Boards to be an international business - the most recognised and loved stand-up paddle board brand in the world.” -Mick Slattery, Surefire Boards   Here's what caught my attention from my chat with Surefire Boards' Mick Slattery: When a price fight begins in your industry avoid getting caught up in it … instead, remain focussed on what you're best at … in Mick's case it was producing a quality product. I love how Mick remained positive through those tough times as he dealt with his auto-immune disease - instead of being the victim and looking for others to blame, he was always looking for the upside. I loved Mick's overall enthusiasm. He flew up from Sydney for the interview / he was excited to be in the studio taking lots of videos / he got me to ring a mate of his who listens to the show … and then he was off to visit retailers in the local area.   Mick Slattery Interview Transcription Tim  So Mick Slattery finally mate. Penny Nagle introduces Feltham Farm's Renegade Monk Cheese and Damien Lee talks about Mr Lee's Noodles' new innoavtion  It has been quite difficult to focus on all of our work this week – everybody at FoodTalk HQ has been arguing an age-old debate: When it comes to Afternoon Tea, are you Devonian (cream then jam) or Cornish (jam then cream)? There's no right or wrong answer (apart from the fact that Devonian is the right answer), and we think we should all just enjoy our cream-first scones in any cream-first way that we cream-first want. We aren't sure on Sue or Ollie's preferences, and we didn't ask, because they had something a bit stronger on their plates for this podcast.  Cheese… it's one of those foods that you just couldn't be without (unless you're Cornish and you probably hate it because you're wrong about everything food-related). However, we aren't sure that the cleaners of our studio were altogether impressed at the end of this session. We were delighted to welcome Penny Nagle of Feltham's Farm. Penny already knows Ollie through their involvement in Great British Chefs' Cheese Awards – so we knew that their Renegade's Monk would be good. Boy, we weren't disappointed and it certainly packed a punch.  What about noodles? Do noodles go with cheese? Like cream and jam (note the cream-first), they probably do – so we were delighted to welcome Damien Lee back on to the show. This isn't the first time that Damien has graced our microphones… he's a bit of a pro by now. We've caught up with him in the past to hear all about his Mr Lee's Noodles brand. You've probably seen the totally healthy and super tasty products in many places by now – but there's a new award-winning tool in his sales arsenal, and we wanted to find out more. If you are lucky enough to be at one of the locations that host a Mr Lee's kiosk – you'll know what we mean. Their kiosk is available 24/7, fully customisable (choice of sauces and oils) and is completely cashless – our foodie experts were so impressed with the bespoke machine that they were gave it gold at the FoodTalk Awards in the kitchen tech category. We hope you enjoy this episode, but if you are running low on memory on your phone or don't have the opportunity to listen right away, we are now on Spotify!!! Damien Lee views himself as a disrupter, the half Australian half-Singaporean serial entrepreneur, and cancer survivor has a continual natural risk reward mentality with a firm belief life gets increasingly better in your mature years. Of all the businesses he has ever built from the ground up, in Australia to Denmark, Singapore, France and Afghanistan, they were in industries in which he had no experience; listen to him discuss why. But his businesses came to a grinding halt in 2014 when he was diagnosed with stage 4-chest cancer and given weeks. Focusing on cleaning up his eating to only consuming healthy foods and drinks he miraculously recovered from the disease. Damian describes an interesting story about instant noodles in which there’s a big but simple business and life lesson that set him on a new path creating a new business producing the healthiest instant noodle available. Mr Lee’s Noodles was born including an innovative, interactive digital ‘Noodle Kiosk’ vending machine providing a 24/7 healthy food option. A highly energetic charismatic person he’s been a finalist or winner in numerous impressive International Entrepreneurial Awards. His energy and drive doesn’t stop there leading seminars, conferences, summits, talks at universities, aids charities and is planning to build a Mr Lee’s Foundation. In June 2017, with the company thriving and new products launching, Damien was diagnosed throat and neck cancer entirely disconnected to his previous illness. Three surgeries and 54 treatments later Damien is now in recovery and says he doesn’t regret a thing. Learn more at the website mrleesnoodles.com Having now beaten cancer for the second time, Damien is more convinced in the power of healthy eating and is excited to expand the brand.

Want to know how to deal with adversity in business? London-based entrepreneur Damien Lee was given just weeks to live when he was diagnosed with cancer. He quickly decided that a diet of no nasties, raw food and chemo, as well as a determined mindset and spirit was the only way to get well. But all the time he craved one guilty pleasure - instant noodles! But because they are full of junk, he couldn't have them. So, in the face of a double adversity - cancer and no instant noodles - he vowed to revolutionise the market with a more healthy noodle. So he created Mr. Lee's Noodles, free from nasties and full of goodness. But the story doesn't end there, Damien has recently fought off a second cancer diagnosis and is back in the game. “That one meeting set the tone for our whole Mr. Lee's Noodle business. I aimed everything at that meeting. Set the time lines and it sped up production. It made everything we were doing that much more focused.” - Damien Lee, Mr. Lee's Noodles There's loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. What's with the Ambassador strategy? And plenty more ... Here's the email from Adam Longhurst suggesting I interview Damien: Hey Timbo, I think my lifelong friend Damien Lee would make a great guest on your show. In 2014, Damien was diagnosed with late stage 4 Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) and only given weeks to live. He is still alive! He then wanted to cleanse his life from eating crap but is a lover of instant noodles. So, he created Mr Lee's Noodles. The marketing of this business has been extraordinary. Damien is an Aussie but has lived in the UK for the past 25 years. We met when we were 10. Mr Lees are winning all sorts of awards and I thought of your show immediately as I think he would make a great podcast. After having battled with NHL, he was diagnosed late last year with Throat Cancer. This was another primary cancer and it is extremely rare for anyone to make it through 2 primaries in the lifetime. I am looking after their Australasian operations as we are now making these noodles in Melbourne!! So, please have a look at the videos and website and if you are interested, let's make a time to get together. Thanks Timbo. "When I said to them 'What's your favourite flavour of your noodles', one of the brothers looked at me with a sly grin, smirked, and said 'we don't eat our own noodles Damien'. I said, 'why wouldn't you eat your own noodles?' And he said, 'If you knew what we put in our noodles, you wouldn't either". Damien Lee has just conquered cancer - for the second time. And all whilst building a team of over 20 people and raising millions of pounds to build an award-winning, premium, no-nasty, gluten-free cup noodle. He's also developed a noodle kiosk that will deliver a hot cup of noodles that is set to revolutionise the food-to-go industry. Damien has also eschewed the traditional route to market via supermarkets and sells via their online store, amazon, their kiosks on university campuses, hospitals and on trains - for now. Oh, and I forgot to mention that he's done all this whilst bringing up his two boys as a single dad. Here's his compelling story.

We don't want you to listen to the FoodTalk Podcast (just yet) if you're in the industry. First, we want you to head over to www.foodtalkawards.com and enter if you fit in one of the categories. Entries close at midnight on Friday (7th April). Okay, do it now… … Welcome back. After filling out your application form, you deserve a fabulous hour of FoodTalk – Sue Nelson and Guy Routledge didn't disappoint with the guests we had on. First up, we had noodles in a pot, but Pot Noodles were a million miles away from the studio. We welcomed Damien Lee from Mr Lee's Noodles, they are serving healthy (yes) and tasty (double yes) instant noodles. What are the chances of that? There's a fantastic personal story behind the birth of the company too, so make sure you listen. From healthy noodles to healthy drinks, we met some great companies at the IFE Show recently and one of those was Barracudos. Fahad Younas gave us the lowdown on his energising protein water. Having heard from an exhibitor at a food show, it was fitting that we spoke to Maragarete Baltay from William Reade. The company helps organise exhibitions and is behind some fantastic publications like ‘The Grocer' & ‘Meat Trades Journal'. She gave us a great insight into the food industry from an angle we don't often see.
