Chef Nomu Reeves joined us to share her story and path to owning Le Sel Catering & Events. Chef Reeves grew up experiencing life from many different cultures and cuisines, and that exposure opened her to a love of the culinary industry with all of its flavors! Later in life, she started out cooking savory items and working inside the kitchens of some prestigious restaurateurs. At some point she switched her focus to become a pastry chef, and eventually turned back to the delights of the savory side of things. Years later her path led her to opening Le Sel Catering & Events, and she has been growing her business ever since!https://www.leselcatering.comDecio Mendes began opening 21 Locks Brewing Company in 2017, and has taken steps along the way to refine the brewery, cafe, and event space to reflect everything that he wants his business to be. In this spooky Halloween special, I'm joined by Ethan James @TheHonestCarpenter to discuss our favorite scary movies just in time for Halloween. We explore various horror subgenres, from classic slashers to modern gems, sharing recommendations and insights. Some of the movies discussed: "Happy Death Day" "Totally Killer" "The Blackcoat's Daughter" "Terrifier" and "Terrifier 2" "Saw" (Franchise) VHS Series (Found Footage Anthology) "Halloween Trick 'r Treat" "Evil Dead Rise" "Ginger Snaps" "Prom Night 2: Hello Mary Lou" "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" "Werewolves Within" John Carpenter's Films ("The Fog," "Christine") "Motel Hell" "Auntie Lee's Meat Pies" "Infinity Pool" "Deadstream" Nicolas Cage Films ("Adaptation," "Pig," "Becky," "Wrath of Becky") We share our thoughts on cult favorites like "Terrifier" and the unique anti-hero Jigsaw from the "Saw" franchise. We also delve into the world of found footage horror with the VHS series, emphasizing the artistry and creativity behind these shorts. We also touch on "Evil Dead Rise" and its fresh urban take on the horror classic. Werewolf movies briefly take the spotlight, with "Ginger Snaps" standing out as a memorable example. We continue our discussion by exploring recent horror releases, including "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" and the comedy-horror gem "Werewolves Within." We share insights on the experience of rewatching older films and highlight their enjoyment of John Carpenter's classics like "The Fog" and "Christine." And let's not forget about kitschy horror favorites such as "Motel Hell" and "Auntie Lee's Meat Pies." The episode also delves into marketing strategies, with A24's approach to promoting independent cult films being commended. The effectiveness of movie trailers and the trend of young filmmakers attempting to include everything in their movies are explored. The Lovecraftian genre, Nicolas Cage's diverse roles in horror, and a brief mention of "Deadstream" round out our discussion. Throughout the conversation, we emphasize their belief that a good film should be evaluated not solely on objective elements like acting and budget, but on its ability to tell a compelling story and evoke emotions. We share their appreciation for films that surprise and engage the audience, leaving a lasting impression. Ethan on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheHonestCarpenter

For the epically-long episode 224 we look at two dark comedies with cannibalism at their core. We start off with the 1980 classic "Motel Hell" from show-favorite director Kevin Connor. It focuses on "Farmer Vincent" played by Rory Calhoun and his sister Ida, played by Porky's-own Nancy Parsons. They run the "Motel Hello" and are known all across the local area as the purveyors of "Farmer Vincent's Smoked Meats" which we find out are made from waylaid motorists who are trapped, buried in the ground to be fattened up and then butchered and smoked. It isn't a total success but it's an interesting curio from bygone days with a few standout moments that should be seen at least once. We follow this with the seemingly zero-budget "Auntie Lee's Meat Pies" from 1997. This is really a thing that has to be seen to be believed. Starring Karen Black as Auntie Lee, Michael Berryman as her bumbling son and Pat Morita as the local sherrif, the cast is definitely stacked for a movie at this level. The story is essentially that Auntie Lee, who worships Satan, takes bad men and turns them into delicious meat pies. Auntie Lee has a gorgeous squad of young women who go out into the world and tempt these bad men into situations where they can be captured and killed and brought back for processing. Directed by Joseph F. Robertson, who mostly has done adult films, this is a weird combination of trippy moments, soft-core sexiness and over-acting! Trust us, it's a completely unique experience. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. The Oilers just wrapped up their road trip, the Chiefs won the Super Bowl, and the gang is all back in the same room, which meant there was a whole lot to talk about on the Monday episode of the Real Life Podcast. To kick off the Monday episode of Real Life, the guys got started with a look at the Super Bowl, including a conversation about the ads, the game itself, and, of course, Rihanna's halftime show. From start to finish, the spectacle of the Super Bowl is always something to behold and it was interesting to hear everyone's highlights from the day. Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, the guys talked about how rough it was to lose to Montreal on Sunday morning, but even though that loss hurt because of the opponent, it wasn't the end of the world either. Despite their disappointment in losing to the Habs, it's hard to feel too bad as the Oilers were able to run through more than a month without a regulation loss. Sticking with the Oilers, the guys dug into the Erik Karlsson rumours that came up out of nowhere over the weekend, and how it seems so incredibly unlikely that Ken Holland would be able to get it done. Lastly, the guys wrapped up the Monday episode of Real Life with an array of topics as no one could really keep their thoughts on the rails. Hosted on Acast. It's finally here! The long-awaited Auntie Lee's Meat Pies episode. Those of you loyal listeners who heard us tease this one a few weeks back will finally have your patience awarded. We talked about this one a couple weeks ago, but ended up doing the April Fool's Day episode where we watched Good Burger. Gotcha! And after that was our collaboration with our friends at Fans of the Dead. But we never wanted to tease an upcoming movie without actually watching it. So here we are. Auntie Lee and her four attractive nieces lure unsuspecting men to their house, kill them, and make them into the most delicious meat pies that the area has ever tasted. But when their 'helper' Larry gets discovered with body parts in his trunk, it threatens to upset the whole operation. Take a listen and tell us what you think over on Instagram @SlashU_Podcast.
