Australia and Others Practicing More Flexibly. This Expert series podcast highlights two leaders from Elevate's flexible legal resourcing business, ElevateFlex. Elevate Director, Paula Forbes, talks with Dan Hogan, an ElevateFlex Engagement Manager, leading our Asia-Pac Initiatives for Australia. Paula and Dan touch on two unique years, trends they are seeing today, and what's next in legal resourcing.[00:47] Extensive lockdowns have marred the Australian market for legal resourcing. [02:47] Australia relies on resource movement in and out to refresh the knowledge and experience pool.[04:00] Talent in short supply becomes expensive.[06:09] Pay a competitive rate, make a decision quickly, condense the number of interviews to one, get the decision-makers on that call.[06:53] Talent wants an element of stability - longer contracts.[08:01] People are evaluating flexible work and how it works for them.[10:31] Work is underway on learning and development for junior lawyers working remotely.[12:24] Today's location-independent jobs provide more opportunity.[13:47] The UK and the US legal talent is starting to move away from big law firms with big salaries.[15:47] Talent is heading back into the larger law offices, and there is a salary race to entice Talent into roles[18:12] One of the patterns that we started to see over 2021 was the movement of Talent even from permanent opportunities.[19:39] There is an increase in opportunities in cybersecurity, and the corporate M&A sector is red hot in Australia and beyond.

Dan Hogan, founder of Barrel Stock Trading Company, a fund that invests in Kentucky Bourbon, talks about learning from failure and success and why we shouldn't try to choose between achievement and enjoyment. Dan believes money is the lifeblood for any entrepreneur. Dan's first investor was his father, who bought a 1984 Cadillac Fleetwood with 410,000 miles to support Dan's limousine business. Dan also started with his college roommate an event business, a retail store, and other businesses before Dan went out on his own to purchase a home health agency. Dan's experience in home health led him to found Medalogix, a successful home health data analytics and operations improvement company. Dan worked for ten years in software sales for EMC where he learned the importance of how money moves in the world. Tom and Dan talk about how businesses are like bonds, and how building a business to grow is not the same thing as building a business to sell. Dan explains why he tells young entrepreneurs to raise more money than they think they'll need, and why trying to preserve your equity at the expense of the viability of the business is a mistake. Dan and Tom talk about why seeing things through the eyes of a beginner is essential to creating a new product and to parenting, and how developing a digital voice is more important than having a great personal network, and how bourbon is like bitcoin.

This episode Dan Hogan & Sally Ann join us to celebrate the perms in space! Starcrash is a 1978 low budget wannabe Star Wars film featuring Christopher Plummer and The Hoff. What more could you ask for? Set your computer wave to monitor our friction trail and prepare yourself for some robot chauvinism. Watch the film (at your own risk): The bad news, a classic of such vintage is not really found streaming at the moment. There is a Blu-ray at Amazon though. You may also find it on Youtube. For how long? Only Akton knows. On with the teardown! Paul does the first Elle impression, while Chris does a horrible Church Lady. The sets remind Sally of the Farragut Film Studios that offer a tour of their Star Trek sets once a year. 70s films love public address systems. Our first perm, Akton played by Marjoe Gortner is also in one of Dan’s favorite bad movies, Food of the Gods. According to Paul’s research on the Starcrash imdb page all the dialogue in the entire film was replaced. Is this why everyone is so cheery? It turns out Elle’s voice, Hamilton Camp is also the voice of Gizmoduck from Darkwing Duck. He did voices for The Tick and many more shows. Chris wonders if Elle is short for Lolipop? He is an Android. Christopher Plummer IS THE EMPEROR. Dan tells us, “It’s not the Force.” So what are Akton’s powers? Limitless? Is it all about the full body perm? Sally & Paul think Akton could be a Time Lord. Ele beaten like the fax machine in Office Space. Is that Zardoz shooting lasers at the cavemen? Akton not using The Force, is also not using a lightsaber. Maybe? Dan thinks more movies should feature cavemen beatings. Unless of course it’s the friendly Captain Caveman. Best answer to how main characters inexplicably survive “We’re not like most people.” Why is Christopher Plummer in this film? His answer, Rome. Dan relates similar stories about why actors do bad films from Elijah Wood and Bruce Campbell. How Star Wars Episode IV should have ended. Sally was very excited to see The Hoff in “his pretty lady makeup.” Sally & Dan think this movie feels much longer than it is. Yet, they both felt that it was so bad it was good. Chris & Paul agree. Dan recommends Galaxy of Terror and Chris says you should check our Forbidden Planet. Sally needs more recommendations! Paul suggests Logan’s Run while Chris & Dan praise Attack The Block. How about Moon, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, Tron and The American Astronaut. Thanks so much to our friends Sally Ann and Dan Hogan for joining us. Be sure to check out ShopSallyAnn.com and Clattertron.com respectively. Of course, thank you for listening. Support Film Frown on Patreon
Dan Hogan briefly re-joins us to discuss his process, the workflow of his webcomic and why being weird is winning.
