When we face setbacks or low points, they are opportunities for us to learn and get stronger. And whether that is through running, work, or life, the same lesson applies. And bouncing back from setbacks is one of the biggest reasons why Dan LaMorte has become the accomplished runner, comedian, and person that he is today through all the lessons he's learned along the way. Going from 300+ pounds to losing tons of weight and finishing multiple ultramarathons, Dan LaMorte is the definition of what it takes when you commit to improving yourself, no matter how hard life gets. And in this episode, Dan shares how he was able to make the mental transformation to change his running and life, lessons he's learned in some of his most recent ultras, and how he utilizes the power of the mind to accomplish his biggest goals. Dan LaMorte is also an accomplished comedian, amassing followers in the hundreds of thousands as a result of his hilarious content and ability to make people laugh along the way. In just 3 years, Dan LaMorte went from 354 pounds to 170 pounds, all thanks to ultra running and marijuana. After a career-ending elbow injury that stopped his baseball pitching aspirations dead in their tracks, Dan began doing stand-up comedy in New York City. As he gained stardom among the NYC comedy crowd, he also gained over 150 pounds. After learning he had fatty liver disease, Dan found his athletic drive again. This time, he found passion and solace in distance running. Dan didn't mess around. His first race ever was 40 miles, and he has only stepped up the distance from there. He is still on the rise as a stand-up comedian and he describes himself as a comic first. During our discussion, Dan dives into all aspects of his journey, including the grind of 'making it' as a comic in NYC, getting into ultra running, his use of marijuana in training, a documentary getting made about him, his future goals, and more. There's probably no such thing as a typical ultrarunner, but if there is, Dan LaMorte ain't it. A standup comic by trade, Dan started running as a way to lose weight, has never run a race shorter than 40 miles, and still smokes cannabis, although he was stone-cold sober when Matt and Hanna caught up with him for this surprisingly earnest and poignant interview. At 23 years old, comedian Dan LaMorte found himself in a hospital bed suffering from a fatty liver and tipping the scales at over 354 pounds. Besides the liver issues, Dan also had gastrointestinal issues. Celiac disease was a possibility, and even though the tests came back inconclusive, the New Jersey native decided to cut gluten from his diet. Dan saw results quickly and after shedding some pounds decided to take up running. With the pandemic shutting comedy clubs across the country, Dan had plenty of time to focus on his running. Eventually his short runs became longer distances, putting in 20 and then 30 miles a week. And then one day, Dan ran an ultra marathon. In this episode, Dan talks about his early days playing baseball and blowing out his arm, getting into stand-up comedy, putting on and eventually losing 171 pounds and using weed as a pre-workout. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/werunthis/support

After an arm injury cut his collegeate pitching career short, you could say that today's guest took some off of athletics. So much so, in fact, that he gained the weight equivalent of another version of himself - 180 pounds to be exact. After some failed attempts to reverse course and resigned to this fate, he told his folks that maybe they should stop pushing him to lose the weight and end his sedintary lifestyle - he just didn't see a solution within himself. Then, he found what many would consider to be an unlikely catalyst that would get him off the couch and out onto the first of what would be many runs in his journey to losing 180 pounds and running his first 40 mile Ultra in Pennsylvania. What was the secret? Well, you'll have to listen to the show to find out. Dan Lamorte is a young, handsome buck, who also happens to be a very funny comedian! Dan also tells a pretty damn good story, so making this interview was a snap. I asked a question, he responded with a crazy-ass story & I laughed. Perfect! Like everyone else on the planet, Dan's life is currently on hold so there was no better time than now to have chat online, record it & play it for a world that's missing fresh comedy in their lives.
