Danny Jordan is the creator of The Capables a group of super-capable kid superheroes all of whom have a super capability or “cape.” Each Capable's superpower is activated through empowerment. When Danny's daughter was diagnosed with an upper limb difference, he found himself immediately compelled to do whatever he could to contribute something positive, something of true importance to this world. Something that would make the world his daughter grows up in more loving, more accepting, and more inclusive. He created The Capables so his daughter and others like her got to see themselves represented on the page as the hero in the story. Outside of this thrilling new literary adventure, Danny has produced and directed over 150 hours of primetime major network and cable television programming. He has also worked extensively as a branded media executive and sponsor producer, securing partnerships with and successfully integrating leading brands into traditional and digital media. Select producing credits include: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Biggest Loser, MasterChef, Deal or No Deal, Storage Wars, and Playbill Presents: The Broadway Cast (Top 100 Apple Podcast). In this episode, Danny joins us to talk about individuals with disabilities being the lead character, how to talk to your kids about differences, and advocating for yourself and your kids in doctors appointments. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/littlewins/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/littlewins/support
This week's interview is with executive producer and author Danny Jordan, who has worked on shows like The Biggest Loser and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and recently published his first book in The Capables series called Rae's First Day! His book series is about kids with disabilities who are superheroes, and their powers are brought on by the empowerment of others. Danny's daughter, Emerson, was the inspiration for this first book because she was diagnosed with a congenital limb difference before she was born, so she now has only a few fingers on her right arm. Danny and I talk about how to tell stories about those with disabilities, mindless scrolling and sharing, the impact Emerson has on him, and much more! As I'm sure you're aware, kids are SUPER good at noticing differences! They are primed to be noticing them, it's part of normal child development, which can be kinda... uncomfortable for us parents who have been kind of conditioned to downplay differences ("shh! That's not polite!") rather than celebrate them. Differences can refer to race, gender, class, development, disability, and other forms. However our children are natural curious beings and at times, they will point out the differences they see. I know questions such as "Mom, why is his skin color like that? Dad why is her arm shorter than the other?", can make us feel uncomfortable. And so, I want to help you address those queries by bringing in Danny Jordan in this podcast episode.Danny Jordan is a proud husband and dad of a beautiful daughter who was diagnosed with an upper limb difference back in 2018.
