This week, Andrew Culture is joined by Dr. San to answer the all-important question: what do Viz magazine, squirrel-based hip-hop folklore, and Captain Sensible have to do with sunglasses? A lot, apparently. From tales of tragically inebriated rodents to obscure country pastiches and mid-80s goth crooners, we dive eyeballs-first into a lens-tinted trip through musical mayhem.Expect a lovingly detailed discussion on Viz's Buster Gonad and the gang, a passionate defence of Ray Orbison's vocal blanket, ZZ Top's fraudulent tour as The Zombies, and the serious existential implications of Skepta's lyrics: "I can't see anything." Same, mate. The riffs are glorious, the tangents are ridiculous, and the jokes? Almost clever. Almost.Whether you love Skeeter Davis or just want to hear two aging music nerds trying to remember why the 2004 Viz movie was a thing, this is your stop. Just don't Google blue waffle. We warned you.### Riffs of the week#### Dr Sam's Riff- Gary Owens Jr - Tomorrow's Stew (opening)#### Andrew's Riff- Current Value - Serenity (3:20)### Dr Sam's track choices1. The tension led to police forming a pathway between the protesters and theater attendees, ensuring the show went on uninterrupted.Tiffany Haddish has reportedly been charged with driving under the influence. Haddish's recent absence from a comedy show in Pasadena fueled speculation about her well-being and potential struggles. Caryn Elaine Johnson, was born in Manhattan in 1955. A Trekkie since childhood, she would eventually go on to a recurring (if oft uncredited) role on the successor series to that very show... Working an unusual, character based standup in the vein of Carol Burnett or Tracy Ullman, it was none other than Steven Spielberg who pulled her from handling hecklers to marquee lights with his The Color Purple, setting her on the road to a lengthy career in film, where she headlined a trio of interesting action comedies before making a name in such populist fare as Ghost, Soapdish, Boys on the Side, Girl Interrupted, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Made in America and Sister Act...and more interesting if seldom discussed efforts like Eddie, The Associate and what remains the definitive adaptation of Stephen King's sprawling postapocalyptic parable, The Stand. Since taking the lead chair on the popular daytime sociopolitical chat show The View a full decade and a half back, she's begun to further pursue a role in producing documentaries relating to black figures in history and entertainment. Jay Kogen on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson So fun to spend time with the funny. Four-time Emmy award-winning writer/producer, Jay Kogen ~ The Simpsons, Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond, Malcolm in The Middle, Tracy Ullman, to name but some. 2nd generation in the Kogen entertainment empire, son of Arnie, The Bob Newhart Show, The Carol Burnett Show, The Dean Martin Show, and father to Charlie, who while still in High School performed an original song at The Kennedy Center, we talked the father/son dynamic from both sides now. Not sure Jay could be a prouder papa or a more beloved son. Arnie, one of the most successful comedy writers of his generation, paved the way for the legacy Jay carries forward. Beginning as a tyke, Jay was on set, garnering small roles in his father's shows, with stars in his eyes and ambition to act. He did for a while, adding stand-up and then Improv which he continues to this day. You can catch him this weekend if you're in LA. Jay's passion for performing has not diminished an iota, even if it's not his bread and butter. We talked the pandemic slowdown and its effect on the business and the work––hard to fathom with all the projects Jay's currently cooking and shopping. From his first earned $5, to selling jokes to Harvey Korman at age 10, his father kind of eviscerating his first attempt at script writing (deserved, says Jay), to PA'ing on The Garry Shandling Show, getting encouragement from Garry and Alan Ziewbel, enough to try his scriptwriting hand again with his partner Wally, which landed them a gig at The Tracy Ullman Show, which begat The Simpsons, simultaneous offers from Seinfeld and Frasier, choosing neither at first and why, loving Malcolm in The Middle, not so much the iCarly reboot, great stories of family and the business of show. Aside from enormous talent, there's great love, humanity, and service. The Kogen upbringing and home life sound pretty idyllic. Jay exudes joy and gratitude, giving back by teaching and personally mentoring young writers. Entertained and inspired, I'm left wanting to create more, laugh more, give more. I sure miss life as it was… this time with Jay reminded me how fun it can still be. Even if it is on Zoom. Our reigning queen of The-Consistently-Great-Thing-in-the-Bad-Movies-We-Watch, Michelle Pfeiffer, once again drifts into the focus of our podcast as the lead of a romcom (!) co-starring Paul Rudd (!!) and directed by Amy Heckerling (!!!) that was buried in the direct-to-DVD pipeline (!V). That's right, on this episode we'll be discussing the 2007 scattershot May-August romantic comedy I Could Never Be Your Woman, a movie that you've probably never heard of and for good reason. Join Leigh, Brendan, and Chris as we discuss the weird power imbalance, the shitty gender dynamics, and a heaping helping of Hollywood satire that was dated by the time Amy Heckerling typed it into Final Draft. And this time, we got TWO variations on a themed cocktail to make this whole awkward affair go down a little easier. Trust us, when you see Tracy Ullman monologuing as Mother Nature about how women don't want to have babies anymore, you'll understand the real reason we needed two drinks. Continue reading →

Welcome to the Three Things podcast, and thanks for dropping by. The podcast is how I try to notice the things I notice that make me happy or grateful. Not letting those things get away is the whole game. This week we travel via pod to 95th Avenue and 170th Street, to the 1980s, to the Jasper Place Library in Edmonton and to Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. This week's three things are: Pop music. With thanks to Kirsty MacColl, Tracy Ullman and Auntie Shelagh. The book drop. With thanks to the idea of a library in the first place. Sunrise, sunset. With thanks to Janet for her note(s). The music in the podcast is by Edmonton pianist and composer Brendan McGrath. His brother, Eamon, has a new album out. The end bells are courtesy Slavo Cech, whose father recently turned 81. The second part of my interview with Pete Waterman, a man who likes trains and has made more hits than ANY producer. He loves music so much, he broke down and cried in this interview. .Beginning as a DJ in the 1950s and 60s, Waterman had close connections with Motown in the 60s and Philadelphia International in the ‘70s. He produced his first record while on holiday in Jamaica and became a Radio One DJ. As A&R for Magnet Records he signed disco act Silver Connection and Chris Rea. He set up his own label, management, promotions and consultancy company working with John Travolta, The Specials, Matchbox, Soft Cell and Elton John. As consultant for MCA he produced hits for Alvin Stardust, Tracy Ullman and the Belle Stars, and signed Musical Youth and Nick Kershaw. He set up PWL with writer/producers Mike Stock and Matt Aitkin. Their first hit was You Spin Me Round for Dead or Alive and went on to be named Songwriter of the Year 3 years in a row. In 1988 SAW had an unprecedented six singles in the Top 30. Watching "Robin Hood: Men In Tights" as an adult is very different than watching it as a child. A lot of the humor is more...mature than we remember. But what were we expecting with a movie that largely revolves around a chastity belt? Speaking of chastity belts, we pair the movie with a Chardonnay by Unsullied. Movie Sync Notes: As of publishing, this movie is available on Hulu. We start the movie 2:59 into the pod and push play on part two at 1:08:32.
Hear ye, hear ye! For the wholesome entertainment of the publick, the bards of Rewatchability revisit the tale of ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS, a parodie penned by the great poet Mel Brooks, and presented by his men including Cary Elwes, Dave Chapelle, Richard Lewis, Amy Yasbeck,Tracy Ullman and all thine favorite thespians of stages comedick and dramtick. Witness the savage mocking of Kevin Costner, the silliness of the travelling mole and the tightiness of the quite-tight tights. But does this tale transport the joys of yesteryear to our aching ears? Is the poet's trade satire or silliness? Where can I get a chastity belt? All these queries and more will be unravelled!Listen to find out and don't forget to subscribe and rate us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or Stitcher! Dianne Wiest nabs her second Best Supporting Actress Oscar, once again in a Woody Allen vehicle, as a deluded, almost-has been Broadway diva drunk on paint remover in "Bullets Over Broadway." Wiest's vocal work as Helen Sinclair, her navigation of some of the script's best lines, and her ability to pivot emotional extremes on a dime are well-deserved of that year's award, but co-stars and fellow nominees Jennifer Tilly and Chazz Palminteri also shine, as well as Jim Broadbent and Tracy Ullman (but not so much Mary Louise Parker). For those of you who don't know MK Brown, you actually might. Mike Judge is a fan. She has been making cartoons for over 40 years, and she has been published in National Lampoon, The New Yorker and Playboy magazine among many others. She also made an animation series called Dr. N!Godatu, which ran on the Tracy Ullman show, next to a then unknown short animation series known as The Simpsons. On top of all of this she is an accomplished painter, and has been showing her work just as long as she has been making cartoons. She was kind enough to sit down with me at her home in California and tell us about her work and her story. It's really good stuff. If you like the show, be sure to subscribe to it. You can do that via our delightful website: www.undergang.net

Lights, Camera, Podcast! This episode of How Was Your Week is mostly about movies. Take your seats and pop your corn! First up, KURT LODER (MTV, Reason.com) is here to share a list of his favorite films that nobody else has really seen, including The Saddest Music in the World, The Midnight Meat Train, and The Fountain. You may know Kurt from MTV, but his film criticism is top-notch. Buy his book, The Good, the Bad and the Godawful: 21st Century Movie Reviews, here! Then, NATHAN RABIN (My Year of Flops, The AV Club) joins Julie to talk in depth about two terrible Beatles movies: Paul McCartney's Give My Regards to Broad Street and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, starring The Bee Gees. An important conversation about how great the Beatles are and how insane these movies turned out to be, mostly for reasons having to do with folly, hubris, and Tracy Ullman. Also: A treatise on Crispin Glover and fresh-pressed vegetable juice! A jazz musician's cat-related toilet project! Fiona Apple's long sweater and Francis Ford Coppola's nipples! Fancy chickens and why you shouldn't fight with theater ushers! And a hunch that Soon-Yi Previn watched the last season of Entourage. Plus: A call for redheaded ladies coming to the June 27th How Was Your Week Live who want makeovers, Colin Firth naked, what Paul McCartney's movie self dreams about, what Kurt Loder does and doesn't like about Quentin Tarantino, and when to listen to the White Album. Enjoy this!
