Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A Voting Puzzle, Some Political Science, and a Nerd Failure Mode, published by ChrisHallquist on the LessWrong. In grade school, I read a series of books titled Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar, who you may know as the author of the novel Holes which was made into a movie in 2003. The series included two books of math problems, Sideways Arithmetic from Wayside School and More Sideways Arithmetic from Wayside School, the latter of which included the following problem (paraphrased): The students have Mrs. Jewl's class have been given the privilege of voting on the height of the school's new flagpole. She has each of them write down what they think would be the best hight for the flagpole. The votes are distributed as follows: 1 student votes for 6 feet. 1 student votes for 10 feet. 7 students vote for 25 feet. 1 student votes for 30 feet. 2 students vote for 50 feet. 2 students vote for 60 feet. 1 student votes for 65 feet. 3 students vote for 75 feet. 1 student votes for 80 feet, 6 inches. 4 students vote for 85 feet. 1 student votes for 91 feet. 5 students vote for 100 feet. At first, Mrs. Jewls declares 25 feet the winning answer, but one of the students who voted for 100 feet convinces her there should be a runoff between 25 feet and 100 feet. In the runoff, each student votes for the height closest to their original answer. But after that round of voting, one of the students who voted for 85 feet wants their turn, so 85 feet goes up against the winner of the previous round of voting, and the students vote the same way, with each student voting for the height closest to their original answer. Then the same thing happens again with the 50 foot option. And so on, with each number, again and again, "very much like a game of tether ball." Question: if this process continues until it settles on an answer that can't be beaten by any other answer, how tall will the new flagpole be? Answer (rot13'd): fvkgl-svir srrg, orpnhfr gung'f gur zrqvna inyhr bs gur bevtvany frg bs ibgrf. Naq abj lbh xabj gur fgbel bs zl svefg rapbhagre jvgu gur zrqvna ibgre gurberz. Why am I telling you this? There's a minor reason and a major reason. The minor reason is that this shows it is possible to explain little-known academic concepts, at least certain ones, in a way that grade schoolers will understand. It's a data point that fits nicely with what Eliezer has written about how to explain things. The major reason, though, is that a month ago I finished my systematic read-through of the sequences and while I generally agree that they're awesome (perhaps moreso than most people; I didn't see the problem with the metaethics sequence), I thought the mini-discussion of political parties and voting was on reflection weak and indicative of a broader nerd failure mode. TLDR (courtesy of lavalamp): Politicians probably conform to the median voter's views. Most voters are not the median, so most people usually dislike the winning politicians. But people dislike the politicians for different reasons. Nerds should avoid giving advice that boils down to "behave optimally". Instead, analyze the reasons for the current failure to behave optimally and give more targeted advice. Advance warning for heavy US slant, at least in terms of examples, though the theory is applicable everywhere. The median voter theorem The median voter theorem was first laid out in a paper by Duncan Black titled "On the Rationale of Group Decision-Making," which imagine's a situation very much like Mrs. Jewls' class voting on the flagpole height: a committee passes a motion by majority vote, and then it considers various motions to amend the original motion, each of which itself needs a simple majority to pass. Each member of the committee has preferences over the range of possible motions, and furthermore: Whil...

Benchmark indices may continue to consolidate and trade range-bound on Wednesday amid lack of fresh domestic triggers. At 7:40 AM, SGX Nifty quoted around 40 points down, suggesting a flat-to-negative start on Dalal Street.  This comes after US stocks closed slightly lower on Tuesday as investors continue to try and assess the route of inflation. Overall, the Dow Jones fell 0.24 per cent, the S&P 500 lost 0.21 per cent, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.03 per cent.  Yields on longer-dated US Treasuries, however, fell for a fourth straight day, with the benchmark 10-year yield hitting a fresh two-week low of 1.557 per cent and helping to dampen inflation worries. This may provide some comfort to the investors. Moreover, the trend was flat to positive among Asian indices early Wednesday. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.6 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei and South Korea's Kospi were up 0.2 per cent, each. Australia's ASX200, meanwhile, was flat. Back home, India reported 208,886 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, a slight increase than the day before, while deaths from the disease rose by 4,172, according to Worldometer. The country's total cases are now over 27 million. Whil this may have a bearing on the market sentiment, investors would eye news flow around unlocking of states and pick up in vaccination drive to move forward. Moreover, stock-specific action and quarterly earnings could steer indices while volatility may rise ahead of the May series F&O expiry tomorrow. Now, a look at the stock-specific triggers that are likely to guide the market today A total of 52 companies, including Berger Paints India, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Burger King India, Cummins India, and Vardhman Holdings are scheduled to announce their quarterly results today. Godawari Power and Ispat Ltd, on Tuesday, posted a multifold jump in consolidated net profit at Rs 304.01 crore for the March quarter 2020-21, from Rs 34.22 in the year-ago quarter, mainly on the back of higher revenues. Total income rose to Rs 1,263.67 crore in the quarter. Energy solutions firm Thermax said its consolidated net profit jumped nearly three-fold to Rs 107 crore for the March quarter. Total income rose to Rs 1,610.34 crore in the quarter from Rs 1,353.66 crore earlier. HDFC Ltd on Tuesday said it will raise up to Rs 7,000 crore by issuing bonds on private placement basis. It will offer a coupon rate of 6 per cent per annum on the bonds, the issue for which opens on May 28 and closes the same day. DHFL: The NCLAT, on Tuesday, stayed the order of the Mumbai Bench of the NCLT, which had directed the DHFL administrator to place the settlement offer of the erstwhile promoter, Kapil Wadhawan, before the committee of creditors while it decided on the appeal.

Our health and wellbeing are being severely tested. Personal stress levels are in overdrive, or as we like to say on Geeks Geezers and Googlization, the SHIFT is hitting a lot of plans. Just minutes before this episode, WHO declared Covid-19 a pandemic. The stock market fell into bear territory. More conferences and events were canceled and many schools announced they were closing. With everyone’s business and personal plans susceptible to disruption, it’s no wonder our stress levels are skyrocketing.  So we decided the best advice we could offer would be to stop and take a deep breath. The timing was perfect because today’s guest happened to be Joe Burton, CEO of Whil, a company founded in 2014 to fight the global stress epidemic. As a mindfulness advocate and author of Creating Mindful Leaders, Joe leaves you with practical skills you can use immediately to power down, even if for only 5 minutes. Most importantly, he offers hope that no matter what is happening in our lives, mindfulness can help each of us how to power forward to a future when everything’s alright.

So, for me, the breath is spiritual nurturing; taking that sacred pause. And that's what Tara Brock calls it; that's why I like her so much. Essentially, we are living, breathing human beings and we're all connected to each other by the very virtue that we live and breathe in the world. So let's really attend to our breath. It was a situation with my daughter actually. The incident was the night before senior year of high school. The kids were congregating in the woods. They’re not supposed to, but that’s where they do. It was early in the evening, 9:00 at night or something and my daughter was leaving the gathering and another girl just comes out from behind a tree and attacks my daughter. It was like a girl-on-girl fight. My daughter, Sophie had no idea where this was coming from. Then the guys got called in and it was one of those weird teenage scenes. And here’s the thing; my daughter didn’t tell me until a day later. Partly because I had actually been in my office the night before and I didn’t see her come home. The next day she came to my home office and said, mom, I have something to tell you. I was like, Oh my god; she crashed the car, she’s pregnant. What is a teenager going to tell you, you know? She sat down and she said, I know I was not supposed to be at the woods, but that’s where all the kids were just to celebrate and she named a former friend from middle school who had physically attacked her. I was just like, Oh, my god are you ok? And she showed me the cat scratches and the fingernail scratches and the whole thing. She had a picture that her friend took of her bloody nose. I said I don’t want to see the picture because I know too much about how these things get imprinted in your brain. I said I believe you. Are you ok? Do you feel safe? The next day was going to be the first day of school. I asked, are you going to be ok in the hallways, in the cafeteria. She said, yeah. And I said, why do you think this happened? She goes, I really don’t know. I think it might just be an old grudge and then she started going into this compassion mode. I’m looking at her shaking my head because I literally was going to go knock on her parents' door and really ream the mother out. I was really mad. I was really upset about it. My daughter was saying, well, she’s really had a hard life. I said, honey, you were assaulted and that’s not ok, but you know what, let’s just think about it. I literally called on every ounce of mindfulness training that I’d had, not to go into this reactive, tiger-mom mode. I might have five or six years ago. I might have gotten in my car, knocked on the door and the whole kit and caboodle. But my daughter actually really showed … I don’t know where she got this because I think she had wisdom and inner strength that I didn’t necessarily have at her age where she could see the situation from multiple angles. She also felt in this case, that talking to the school could blow it up and make it worse. I said, let’s just put that on hold because I’m the parent here and it’s ultimately the parents’ responsibility to do something. So part b of this story is that I waited a week. Then I made a meeting with the school and I just said, I know that the woods are the satellite off-campus site for these kids and that as long as they’re not on the property, there’s nothing you can do about it. I said, here’s my concern; that this is going to escalate and this could cause a rift that both girls are going to be in a sort of interpersonal war and that both of them could have an unpleasant year because what happened immediately is that a lot of the girls and guys sided with my daughter. That was going to incense the situation more. That’s what kind of informed the book, was that very incident because I just had one of those wtf moments where I just said, what happened to kindness.

We are living in an age that has our brains trained for activity. Mindfulness trains our brain to go to a place of calm and focus so we can be more present in our lives. Just 5-10 minutes of practice a day on bringing our attention back to a focal point can help us be able to maintain sustained attention for longer periods of time. It is like going to the gym for your brain..not easy but very rewarding!   "Having the awareness to understand when to act and when not, and being able to act out of choice instead of compulsion is a big part of mindfulness." - Joe Burton   Mindfulness training is becoming more common on the workplace because there are now thousands of studies in the field of neuroscience that correlate it with improved health and performance. It is linked to improved cardiovascular health, immune systems, healing time, memory, and focus. Studies even show a link to reducing chronic pain and PTSD. Of course this is important to employees but it also benefits companies that want to reduce absenteeism and health care costs. In this on demand world, it is important to be equipped with ways to relieve stress and mindfulness training is the perfect tool.   What you will learn in this episode: What is mindfulness Myths and misconceptions What it means to be mindful Examples of mindfulness Impact of mindfulness Leadership and relationships Tips on how to become more mindful   Link From The Episode:   whil.com    (Music by Ronald Jenkees)
