"Holding Open Possibilities for Each Other" Sunday, May 11, 2025 In this month when we look at the power of imagination, it is interesting to explore how we do that for one another in our personal relationships. How do parents use imagination (for good and ill) in the shaping of their kids' lives? How can we do that for one another, aware of the ways that are life-giving, second-chance-offering, and liberating? Rev. Vanessa Rush Southern, Senior Minister; Rev. Laura Shennum, Minister of Congregational Life; Dennis Adams, Worship Associate; UUSF Bell Choir led by Reiko Oda Lane, organist; UUSF Choir led by Mark Sumner, director; Robin May, oboist; Wm. García Ganz, pianist Eric Shackelford, Camera Operators; Jonathan Silk, Communications Director; Kelvin Jones, Jose Matias Pineda, and Francisco Castellanos, Sextons; Carrie Steere-Salazar, Flowers; Linda Messner, Head Usher

"Safe Harbors in Stormy Times" Sunday, March 2, 2025 Someone teaches you about the ocean. Someone shows you how to swim for the joy of it, or maybe so you can be safe. Each of us will face storms, and what someone taught us about the water, about swimming, and about what will get us through is relevant now. And relevant to why generations have invested in the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco, this port in the storm, for almost 175 years! Rev. Vanessa Rush Southern, Senior Minister; Rev. "The State of the Union and the Soul of the Nation" Sunday, November 10, 2024 No matter what happens in our election, as I write this, it is playing out in voting booths and polling places across the country. We will have work to do together. The divide is too big, the rhetoric too scary and angry, for us to think that we can just declare victory or defeat and bunker back down on our side of the issues or arguments. As a nation, we need to reconnect to each other, to what is exacerbating any legitimate differences, heal some old wounds, and perhaps get good at declaring what we will not, the majority of us, agree to descend into. In addition, we need some articulated notion of the common good wrestled into national consciousness to anchor us against the storms of climate change and international anti-democratic movements and all else we need to face off, creatively, against instead of using up our energy to fight one another. This Sunday we gather ourselves, as we are, to begin to attend to what we have just been through and are facing as the emerging state of our union. Rev. Vanessa Rush Southern, Senior Minister; Rev. Laura Shennum, Minister of Congregational Life; Dennis Adams, Worship Associate; Galen Workman, Moderator, Board of Trustees; Larry Chinn, jazz pianist; Mark Sumner, songleader; Ben Rudiak-Gould, songleader Shulee Ong; Eric Shackelford; Eli Boshears, Camera, Camera Operators; Jonathan Silk, Communications Director; Thomas Brown, Jose Matias Pineda, and Francisco Castellanos, Sextons; Athena Papadakos, Flowers; Linda Messner, Head Usher

“Hello, Frank!” in honor of the feast of St Francis which is on Oct 4. Sunday, October 1, 10:50 am, 2023 Living in a city named for St. Francis, we find ourselves looking for the humanity behind the saint as we negotiate very difficult times: Ideals of loving the poor get confused with the complexity of addressing poverty and homelessness; and a reverence for all creation can leave us wondering what really matters environmentally. “What Fuels These Fools?” Sunday, October 23, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream What makes Fools “faithful”? More than anything it is a willingness to hang in there, even when it seems like not much is changing. Futility, rather than fuel, seems to be what's on people's minds these days, but the Fools are committed to the faithfulness of fidelity and steadiness, keeping on even when it seems rather ridiculous to do so. Carmen Barsody and Sam Dennison, two long-time Faithful Fools, bring us their reflections on what it takes to keep on keepin' on. “Good Trouble” Sunday, July 31, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream In March of 2020, the late John Lewis called on everyone to "get into good trouble, necessary trouble and redeem the soul of America" as he spoke from the Edmund Pettis bridge in Selma Alabama commemorating the tragedy of Bloody Sunday, March 7, 1965. Join us on Sunday July 31st for a special service led by worship associate Mari Magaloni Ramos: “Good Trouble” Our collective values of democracy, privacy and bodily autonomy are under active attack and we have suffered setbacks. And as is always the case, it is our BIPOC and LGBTQ folx that will be most negatively impacted in the coming years if we do not act. One of the most powerful things that we can do to stem this tide is to support and motivate our fellow Americans to vote. We can do that by meeting hate and grievance with love and beloved community. "Elephant Company: an Earth Day service" Sunday, April 24, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream On Earth Day I think our goal is always to connect to the miracle and the mystery and the awesome power and our love for the earth, in part so that we remember in our hearts that we are anchored to the commitment to save earth and care for Her. I have also been thinking of that phrase lately of how the more particular something is, the more universal it is. So rather than talk about the blue-green spinning planet and try and feel love and connection to that, I want to talk about one particular piece of life that's part of this earth. Let's talk about elephants. I don't know if you've ever heard a sermon on the elephant. Maybe that alone will draw you to church to see how a minister is going to make something spiritual out of the big, plodding, odd looking creature that we know as the pachyderm. Or maybe you just need to be together and sing and sit in silence or light candles. Whatever it is, I'll see you on Sunday! Rev. "Word After A Word After A Word Is Power" Sunday, April 3, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream Poetry has the ability to awaken the mind with a single word or to give a gulp of water to the heart one didn't know was thirsty. It is simple and complex, like each living being. Poetry is the language of Faithful Fools. “The Pursuit of Radiance” (November 14, 2021) Worship Service As the darkest days of the year arrive, lights appear everywhere: ropes of lights outline tall buildings, colorful Christmas lights brighten windows and trees, candles are lit reverently in Hanukkah menorahs, Kwansa kinaras and winter solstice rituals. We humans instinctively crave and seek out light when days are dark. This is true, metaphorically, in our personal lives as well. When our days are dark and despair fills our lives, we crave the light of hope, insight and love. The sermon will explore light as a symbol of the human spirit, and how we can bring more light into our lives. Rev. If you have a male doctor who wears a tie, that tie could come into contact with you as your doctor examines you. This episode begins by explaining why that could be dangerous and why you should probably stay away from your doctor's tie or maybe even ask him to take it off. https://www.webmd.com/women/news/20040524/nasty-neckties-doctors-ties-carry-germs Trying to understand the rules of English can be maddening. Some words follow the certain rules - others don't. Some words that should rhyme -don't. Some words that used to mean one thing, now mean something else. Why does English have all these quirks? Someone who is a real expert on all the strange things in English is linguist Arika Okrent author of the book Highly Irregular: Why Tough, Through, and Dough Don't Rhyme—And Other Oddities of the English Language https://amzn.to/3CWVCsQ . Listen as she explains why almost all the quirks in the language actually have a reason and a story. About 80% of people are passive. A lot of those passive people wish they weren't because they feel that other people walk all over them. So what's the alternative? Dennis Adams, therapist, former minister and former passive person spent a long time developing a different approach for passive people that he calls – Honest Direct and Respectful. It is also the name of his book, Honest, Direct Respectful: 3 Simple Words That Will Change Your Life (https://amzn.to/2Q0tMrs). Listen as Dennis explains how and why it is such a powerful technique for passive people. I suspect we have all held in a sneeze - or at least tried to. Is it a good idea? Or could it actually be dangerous to hold it back? Listen as I explain. https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/news/20180116/hold-that-sneeze--maybe-not PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! "The Power of Focus" (August 29, 2021) Worship Service Steve Jobs is famous for his message on focus, the power of focus. In a different way, the same message has power for our spiritual and moral lives. After all, have you noticed how what we look for in the world in part determines what we find? Or how consciously deciding what we want to make happen also requires us to surrender to not making other things happen if we are to have any chance at meeting our goal? Or how choosing the qualities we put forward in the world also necessitates spiritual practices and focused time for reflection to be able to cultivate those qualities in our character and habits of the heart. As we begin to step into a new year of school, of work after summer, of church and community life, this Sunday is one chance to reflect on where each of us might choose to focus our energies. Rev. Dennis Adams is a survivor in every sense of the word. He was diagnosed with breast cancer, something he didn't even realize was possible for a man, until it became part of his story. He's cancer free today. In this episode, he'll take us to his highest weight of 501 pounds and share what inspired him to make a change once and for all. He's maintaining a 330 pound weight loss and he's doing it on the road, where he works as an over the road truck driver.

Accepting Our Demons From where come Temptation, Evil, and Demons? Recent bestsellers prominently feature devilish beings, pointing us toward the ancient religious study of Demonology. What do Unitarian Universalists have to say about these creatures? How might liberal religion understand them? What do stories about demons have to say about the roles of good, evil, and temptation in our own world and in our lives? Rev. Lucas Hergert, minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Livermore since 2009, will explore these questions. Rev. Lucas Hergert, Guest Minister Dennis Adams, Worship Associate Christine Tulis, harp & song leader Wm. Garcia Ganz, piano Kathleen Quenneville, Welcome Jonathan Silk, OOS, Sound & Worship Archives/Podcast
