The Republican “Contract With America” is arguably one of the most influential political documents in recent history. In 1994, then-Reps. Newt Gingrich of Georgia and Dick Armey of Texas drafted the Contract With America, rallying Republicans around key policy priorities ahead of that year's midterm elections. Gingrich credits the document with leading to Republicans' historic House takeover. “To show you how historic it was, there's a 40-year period when there [was] no Republican majority,” says Gingrich, who became speaker of the House. The momentum continued, and Republicans “held the House for 12 years, but what was important was, when we lost it in 2006, Republicans knew they could be a majority,” the former Georgia lawmaker says.In his new book, “March to the Majority: The Real Story of the Republican Revolution,” Gingrich explains how the Contract With America fundamentally changed the Republican Party. He also shares stories about President Ronald Reagan and weighs in on the current political climate. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

He was one of the engineers of the "Republican Revolution" of the 1990s, in which Republicans were elected to majorities of both houses of Congress for the first time in four decades. Armey was one of the chief authors of the Contract with America. Armey is also an author and former economics professor. After his retirement from Congress, he has worked as a consultant, advisor, and lobbyist.

THE BEAT GOES ON - GOP IS HEADED FOR A "BIG-TIME" BEAT DOWN

RuffRydrz-RADIO

The steady drum beat goes on in the background. Rep. Sen. Jeff Falke (AZ) - who just a short while ago had a favorable poll rating has now eclipsed his fellow U.S. Rep. Senator, Mitch McConnell (KY) for the dubious distinction of the U.S. Senator with the most unfavorable polling numbers.   The reason: Flake's recent "no" vote on universal background checks. 70% of Arizonans are in favor of gun purchase background checks. Probably the same figure could also be used nat'lly for immigration reform.  90% of Americans are in favor of background checks for gun purchases. So, for the current two most high-profile national issues, it would seem that the rapidly changed circumstances GOP Senator Flake finds himself in is symptomatic of the circumstances the GOP establishment finds itself in. On immigration reform, the GOP, contrary to some of its Congressional members' recent statements, will most likely stand in the way of any reform as the House of Rep. will not - in all likelihood - be able to muster up a majority to pass such legislation. On gun purchase background checks which already has the backing of 90% of the American public, the GOP will mirror their performance thus far on immigration reform efforts. All in all, another year of drif on such major national issues as these on top of the up and down efforts to craft sensible, workable and sane deficit legislation will only result in a purge in Congress - especially the House - of current sitting Repubs. Grover Norquist, Karl Rove, David/Charles Koch, Dick Armey, John Boehner, Tea Party adherents and the like, start packing your backs after November-2014. The GOP as a brand name now ranks with the Edsel.

Last night I had a really interesting and enjoyable conversation with former Rumsfeld and Bush speechwriter Matt Latimer, who has a new book about his experiences working in the administration. This is essentially the story of a young, principled conservative who left Michigan to puruse the political junkie's dream in Washington DC. As he rose through the ranks, all the way to the White House, this idealist saw how the sausage was made and came away greatly disappointed. In his Human Events review, editor Jed Babbin noted, "If Matt Latimer’s new book had been released a few weeks ago, the Tea Party marchers would have hoisted him onto their shoulders and carried him -- laughing and cheering -- all the way up Capitol Hill. Laughing, because Latimer’s new book,Speech-less: Tales of a White House Survivor, renews conservatives’ license to chuckle at ourselves. Cheering, because it lifts the burden of George W. Bush from our shoulders." In additon to the stories in the book about Rumsfeld, Bush and Rove, we talked about the current state of the GOP, the fight between conservatives and those who are urging the party to moderate their message. We also talked about the NY-23 congressional race and what that said about the influence of the grass roots consevatives. In fact, Matt has an article on that very topic on Human Events today, Doug Hoffman and 'The Canada Option' "No, the special election in New York’s 23rd district is not about conservatives getting mad because they weren’t getting their way. It may be about something far more important. And the elites in the Republican Party better take note. For the first time in recent memory, conservatives at the heart of the Republican Party’s political base -- led by Fred Thompson, Sarah Palin, Steve Forbes, Jim DeMint, Dick Armey among others -- openly defied the GOP leadership by supporting third-party candidate Doug Hoffman. Also putting principles first, the National Conservative Campaign Fund, spearheaded by some of the premier figures of the conservative movement, issued an endorsement as well. And Tea Partiers, according to reports, planned to put their grassroots muscles behind Hoffman by going door to door. Make no mistake: the New York race was not a fight within the GOP – another Reagan versus Ford – but a fight against the GOP." This was a very fun book to read and I really enjoyed the wide-ranging discussion with Matt. I hope you do too. What is Pundit Review Radio?
