“The secret of politics? Make a good treaty with Russia.” Former German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck's advice seems to have resonated with an entire generation of German leaders in the 21st century, from the Social-Democrat Gerhard Schroder to the CDU's Angela Merkel. For years, Germany built its economic ties with Russia, but also simultaneously its dependence on Vladimir Putin's increasingly authoritarian and militaristic regime. A German illusion that crashed somewhere in the fields of Ukraine in February 2022. But Germany is not the only European heavyweight to have indulged itself with these Russian illusions. Across the Rhine, several French presidents, of all political stripes, have also attempted to build ties with Russia in the name of France's strategic interests. With mixed results at best. Today we try to understand these Franco-German illusions and their consequences. We are joined by Guy Chazan, Berlin bureau chief at the Financial Times, and Sylvie Kauffmann, columnist for Le Monde and author of Les Aveuglés (2023), a brilliant book on today's topic! This overlooked agency is the Bureau of Land Management, or BLM.Josh Jackson has become one of the BLM's top enthusiasts, with a huge following on his forgottenlandscalifornia instagram. He's also a writer and conservationist, and is working on a new book all about BLM lands.Today we dig into what turned Josh on to these fascinating places. He gives us a nice overview of what they're like, the amazing sites and plants and animals you may see, and how you can enjoy them too. We also learn about his upcoming book, to be published with Heyday Books. It sounds intriguing , and aims to fill a major gap in the literature. On 24 February 2022, Russia blindsided most of Europe with its all-out invasion of Ukraine. This forced an overdue reckoning for Europeans on the failures of their Russia policy and the realities of Vladimir Putin's agenda. In particular, France and Germany had been hoodwinked by promises of cheap Russian energy supplies, as well as the pipe dream of a common European security architecture with Moscow. In this week's episode, Mark Leonard welcomes ECFR board and council member, Sylvie Kauffmann, who is editorial director, lead writer, and columnist at Le Monde; and ECFR council member, Timothy Garton Ash, who is a bestselling author and professor of European studies at Oxford University, to discuss Kauffmann's new book “Les Aveuglés, comment Berlin et Paris ont laissé la voie libre à la Russie” (“The Blindsided: How Berlin and Paris Cleared the Way for Russia”). How and when could France and Germany have acted differently and changed the path of history? At what point was it clear that Putin was heading down this path? And why did Europeans, again and again, ignore the warning signs? My guest today is Andrew Kauffman.Andrew is a returning guest to the podcast and I'm so happy to be continuing the conversation with him. Our first conversation is on episode 117, and I highly recommend listening if you haven't yet, as Andrew shared pieces of his journey including his experience coming out as gay as well as being a kidney donor to his father.Andrew is a coach, a writer and a teacher of creative writing. He believes that writing be a transformational aid for healing, in coaching, and in all contexts.Trained and accredited by The Professional Writing Academy in the use of expressive and therapeutic writing, he uses stories, metaphor and narrative tools to help his coaching clients cope with life transitions, and to derive meaning from challenging life events. In our conversation today, we talk about mental health and mental ill-health. Andrew cares deeply about mental health and wellbeing and his work reflects this compasion. One of the more specific areas we explore today is around male mental health. I admittedly am distanced from this topic and it was interesting to explore with Andrew. I came away from the conversation with a greater desire to be aware of the challenges of various groups of people, how they are both different and similar to my own journey. Holding the paradox of our differences and similarities is not necessarily easy. And there's no easy answers to the challenges of mental health and wellbeing. I believe conversations like this one are useful, however, despite not having a well-defined outcome or a pretty metaphorical bow to finish it off. Andrew, thank you again, for stepping into the conversation with authenticity and passion. Thanks you for sharing vulnerably from your own journey, the places you've found answers, and also the places you are still seeking understanding. Both in conversation and in writing you are inspiring as you model the challenging work that you also facilitate and invite others into as well for the sake of healing and making the world a better place. Please check out the links to Andrews work, his workshops, and to connect directly with him: Andrew is Writer-in-Residence at the UK's Centre for Mental Health. Read his new essays here https://www.centreformentalhealth.org.uk/topics/writer-residence. (Andrew's latest essay is entitled, Life with OCD: An Anti-Memoir. )In autumn 2023 Andrew will be running Queer Storytelling, a creative writing course for LGBTQ+ writers, together with London Lit Lab. Getting underway in November, he is taking bookings now. He is also facilitating workshops for writers, focusing on writing for personal wellbeing, and as a creative outlet. Do check out his events with The Literary Consultancy in October and November. Again, bookings are happening now. Find Andrew on Twitter: @JKaye82 Make Life Less Difficult
