Over the past few years, writer/producer Don Handfield and writer Clay Adams have been working to develop a gritty western comic with actor Martin Kove, best known for his iconic role as Sensei Kreese from Karate Kid & Cobra Kai. Their project, Prodigal Son #1, launched this week on Kickstarter, and the boys join the ComixLaunch Podcast discuss the ins and outs of writing a comic for a celebrity.

Prodigal Son was conceived by Kove and writer-producer Don Handfield — who co-writes the series. Handfield is the author of hit comic series The Dark Age, The Source and The Rift. He is also co-creator and EP of History Channel's Knightfall, and producer of The Founder, staring Michael Keaton. Actor-writer Clay Adams penned the series alongside Handfield and is a voice talent behind animated series TMNT, Yu-Gi-Oh! and writer of Scout Comics' Red X-Mas. Producer Chris LeMole (Mudbound, Peanut Butter Falcon) also shares story credit.Pre-launch Page Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1546838856/prodigal-son-1Martin Kove was born on March 6, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. Strong-featured, narrow-eyed actor who has portrayed a mixed bag of both good guys and bad guys. He first turned up on screen in several minor roles, and was noticed as the villainous Nero the Hero in the low-budget road race Death Race 2000 (1975), and then as Clem the sadistic rigger, breaking Jan-Michael Vincent's ribs in White Line Fever (1975). He cropped up on the television series Cagney & Lacey (1981) portraying honest Police Detective Isbecki, and then ended up on the wrong side of a rampaging Sylvester Stallone in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985).Kove probably scored his greatest visibility to the public in the hugely successful The Karate Kid (1984) in which he played John Kreese, the head instructor of the Cobra Kai karate school. He reprised the role in the two sequels, The Karate Kid Part II (1986) and The Karate Kid Part III (1989). Kove has since kept consistently busy, primarily in the action-thriller film genre, and has notched up over 80 film appearances to date, as well as numerous television guest roles.

I'm visiting my grandma and she's totally focused on a piece of paper. Naturally, I ask her what she's looking at.  She tells me they're letters from my grandfather to her and her to my grandfather during wartime. Some are torn, some are yellowed from age, some are typed and some handwritten. I notice there's a suitcase next to her filled with hundreds of these aged letters. I'm curious, so I ask if I can read one. “Oh no no no,” she quickly responds. “A few of these are a little too risqué for you.”  She promises that these letters will be mine one day…  when she's gone. I'll never forget that conversation with her that afternoon. My grandparent's love story during wartime, the legacy of that love, and the way they saw the world are encapsulated and preserved in those letters forever. My guest today on the Storytelling School Podcast knows and appreciates the power of the written word. Tricia Lee is not only recognized as one of the new top writers in Hollywood with many accolades for writing (and directing) to her name already, but her stories stick with you long after you hear them. If you're curious to know: How can a different perspective influence stories you've seen a lot of times already? How did a wrong number become the impetus behind an award-winning feature film script? What can the animal world teach us about humanity? Then listen in as we discuss family and life incidents, unlikely friendships, the impact of putting meaning and feeling into your stories, overcoming writer's block, and more! What you will learn in this episode: Why truth (not necessarily facts) is key to a great story How journaling can help you solve “blank page syndrome” Why your story matters, even if you think it doesn't Who is Tricia? Tricia Lee is an AAPI female filmmaker who grew up in Toronto, Canada. She specializes in creating both heart-warming and heart-breaking but also humorously uplifting films. With her Canadian perspective, she likes to tell stories that look at the American Dream and explore ideas around voicelessness, belonging, and shared humanity.  Tricia's Good Chance feature script, which is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way and Janet Yang, was on the CAPE LIST and was also the Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Screenplay Competition grand prize winner and the Cinequest Best Feature Screenplay winner. It was also a top 50 finalist in The Academy Nicholl Fellowship, a top 14 finalist for the Universal Studios Writer's Program, and was selected for the prestigious Producers Guild of America Power of Diversity Master Workshop. In addition to these accolades, Tricia has directed three award-winning features such as Blood Hunters and Silent Retreat, with the former sold to Hulu and presented at Cannes and the latter released theatrically across Canada and sold to NBC Universal's Chiller Network. Currently, she's the showrunner and sole writer of eight episodes of 108 Media's animated anthology, A Banquet for Hungry Ghosts. Soon, she will direct a biopic about William Hung (of American Idol fame) that she wrote with Don Handfield, and Tony and Tim Bui serving as producers. Don Handfield, Joshua Malkin, and I talk about the differences between writing screenplays and collaborating to write a graphic novel, such as their newest, UNIKORN. We talk about acting with Robert Duvall, getting around lawsuits from McDonalds for THE FOUNDER, persevering to make KNIGHTFALL, being a videogame architect, guest staring on SAVED BY THE BELL: THE NEW CLASS, a potential rift in time/between universes, ghost hunting, and so much more. Don is the co-creator of History Channel's drama series Knightfall and produced The Founder, starring Michael Keaton, and Kill The Messenger, starring two-time Academy-Award nominated actor Jeremy Renner. Don also wrote and directed the Saturn Award-winning film Touchback starring Kurt Russell and Christine Lahti. His first comic series The Rift was produced by Steven Spielberg/Amblin Entertainment as an episode for the upcoming Apple reboot of Amazing Stories. His second series, The Mall, was optioned by Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) for development into a TV show. Don was named one of the top new faces of independent film by Filmmaker Magazine and has written screenplays or produced films for all the major studios. Joshua has written feature projects for Sony, Warner Brothers, Cross Creek Entertainment, Universal Pictures as well as for more than a dozen production companies, both big and small. These include: an adaptation of the 80's cult franchise Beastmaster, a supernatural thriller for Australian company See Films and a “re-boot” of the franchise Buck Rogers In the 25th Century. He also wrote and produced three documentaries: two about the art of puppetry, and the other about underground comics. In 2008, his screenplay Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever completed production for Lionsgate. He is currently developing an animated family film for Intrigue Entertainment, a horror movie for Traveling Picture Show, and a TV series for showrunner Jonathan Glassner (Outer Limits, Stargate SG-1.) Joshua is a professor of screenwriting at the University of California Riverside, a story architect for the video game industry, and the proud father of twins.

It’s landmark Episode 375, and it’s another double-header week! First up are Don Handfield and Joshua Malkin, comics creators of Unikorn, a family friendly graphic novel you can now support on Kickstarter.Com! This is Don’s third comic, with The Rift and The Mall already successful books! Joshua is also a high-power TV/film scripter, and both wanted to create a comic their daughters could enjoy and benefit from reading! We talk about how they brought this tale to life as well as what we might expect from them in the months ahead. Then everything wraps up with the return of Caleb Thusat, one of the main driving forces behind Alter Life, Zed and now Nook. Here’s the series’ quick description: “A family escapes WWII Germany only to discover their new home on the border of France is haunted by a dark past and a cat named Nook.” This latest Kickstarter has already met its goal, so he’s bringing out great stretch goals! It’s an excellent one-shot worthy of your support, so I recommend you go to Kickstarter at this link after you listen to our discussion! Don’t miss it!

Julian Ovenden, a Screen Actors Guild Award winner, talks with Ilana about his roles on "Knightfall," "Downton Abbey," and many other amazing projects. Julian shares details about his first musical in London, "Merrily We Roll Along," by the inimitable Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim was there at rehearsal daily and re-worked material for and with Juilan. The two often sat at the piano together since Julian had to play a lot in the show. Julian's gorgeous tenor voice has made him one of the most sought after concert performers in the world; he has three solo albums to his name. The son of a vicar who became the vicar for England's royal family, Julian's discusses what is was like for his family to live on the property at Windsor Castle. An actor who once had a phobia about accents, Julian shares how he learned to embrace them in order to stretch himself. And Julian gets candid with Ilana about the ups and downs of his career and tells hilarious audition stories that any actor will relate to. British actor, Julian Ovenden is an accomplished thespian and musician, who has also had memorable performances in globally renowned television and film projects over the span of his 17-year career. He has starred on Broadway and in the West End, in high profile television series on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as fashioning an international career as a concert and recording artist. Ovenden currently stars as ‘William De Nogaret’ in HISTORY’s “Knightfall,” created by Don Handfield and Richard Rayner and executively produced by Jeremy Renner. The story centers on the mysterious but true accounts of the Knights Templar, the elite warriors of the Crusades. It delves into the great secrets protected by the Templars and tells the story of faith, loyalty, and brotherhood that help sustain these warriors on the battlefield and the dark events that would forever sear the infamous date of Friday the 13th into the world’s psyche.  As a solo singer, Ovenden has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including The New York Philharmonic, The New York Pops, The Northern Sinfonia, The Liverpool Philharmonic, The RPO, The LPO, The Belfast Symphony Orchestra, the John Wilson Orchestra, The BBC Symphony, The Royal Concertgebouw, and The BBC Concert Orchestra. Ovenden made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2014 and with much success, performed an additional headlining concert in 2016. In 2013, Ovenden recorded a debut album for Decca records entitled “If You Stay” and has since made a “Rogers and Hammerstein” record with John Wilson for Warner Classics and a “Downton Abbey Christmas” release.  On stage at the Booth theatre in 2006, Ovenden made his Broadway debut in “Butley,” as ‘Joseph Keyston’ opposite Nathan Lane. In 2011, Ovenden starred as ‘Death’ in “Death Takes a Holiday” for The Roundabout Theatre Company and appeared as ‘J.M. Barrie’ in The Weinstein Company’s “Finding Neverland.”  Ovenden first appeared on British television as ‘Andrew Foyle’ starring opposite Michael Kitchen in the widely adored “Foyle’s War” for five seasons. He has also appeared as ‘Charles Blake’ in two seasons of the worldwide phenomenon “Downton Abbey.” Domestically, Ovenden is best known for playing ‘Jeremy Lambert’ in Season 3 and 4 of CBS’s drama series, “Person of Interest.” Further television credits include ‘Val Dartie’ in “The Forsyte Saga,” “Related,” and “SMASH.” Ovenden can be seen in the films, “Colonia,” “The Confessions,” and the British indie war film “Allies.” Ovenden currently resides in England with opera singer Kate Royal, their son Johnny Beau, daughter Audrey, and Roman the dog.
