Welcome to another episode of Funky Pearls Radio podcast, where we celebrate the musical legends who've shaped our world. Today, we're spotlighting the illustrious journey of Jean Carn, a name that resonates with soulful melodies and timeless artistry. Born Sarah Jean Perkins on March 15, 1947, in Columbus, Georgia, Jean Carne was destined for a life steeped in music. Raised in Atlanta, her parents recognized her talent early, encouraging her to sing in the church choir at just four years old. But Jean's musical prowess didn't stop at vocals; she also mastered piano, clarinet, and bassoon. Her academic journey was as impressive as her musical one. At Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta, Jean not only honed her musical skills but also became fluent in Russian. Her dedication to music earned her a scholarship to Morris Brown College in 1965, where she expanded her repertoire to include various orchestral instruments. Jean's recording career blossomed in 1969 alongside her husband, Doug Carn. Their musical collaboration bore fruit in the form of three albums for Ovation Records. Jean's unique voice, first heard on the radio show 'Today In Georgia', captivated listeners, and her rendition of 'Misty' left an indelible mark. A trailblazer in her own right, Jean Carne was praised for being one of the first Afro-American women to take charge of her musical direction, resisting industry pressures. Her collaborations with legends like Duke Ellington, Norman Connors, George Duke, and Earth, Wind And Fire further solidified her status in the music world. Jean's time with Philadelphia International Records marked a pinnacle in her career, introducing her to R&B and pop audiences. Her move to Motown Records brought the hit 'If You Don't Know Me By Now', a duet with The Temptations, showcasing her versatility and reach. Beyond her own albums, Jean contributed to various projects, working with artists like Dexter Wansel, Kenny Gamble, and Stanley Turrentine. Her dedication to her craft never waned, as evidenced by her continuous touring, balancing her professional life with her personal life as a mother of three in Atlanta. In 2002, Jean toured the U.K., a testament to her enduring appeal and global reach. Her album 'Collaborations', released in 2003, was a celebration of her musical partnerships over the years, a fitting tribute to a career marked by diverse and enriching musical alliances. Jean Carne's discography, from her early collaborations with Doug Carn to her solo works and later albums, paints a portrait of an artist who not only embraced her musical roots but also evolved with the times. Albums like 'Jean Carne' (1977), 'Happy To Be With You' (1979), and 'Closer Than Close' (1986) are landmarks in a journey defined by passion, skill, and an undying love for music. As we celebrate Jean Carne on Funky Pearls Radio, we honor not just her music but her spirit - a spirit that has inspired and will continue to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers alike. Her story is a melody that speaks of perseverance, talent, and the transformative power of music. Jean Carne, a true musical virtuoso, remains an enduring symbol of soul, jazz, and R&B excellence.Hébergé par Ausha. Visitez ausha.co/politique-de-confidentialite pour plus d'informations.

For many black musicians, jazz was more than a gig and a way to make bread. Cecil McBee, Jon Hendricks, Rashied Ali, Doug Carn and Vincent Pelote speak about the importance of this music in their lives and its role in bridging the distance between races, on and off the bandstand.
Ronnie Laws is an award-winning tenor saxophonist and composer whose career has, since the early 1970s, straddled the worlds of jazz and R&B. Since 1975 he has placed seven albums in the Top 200 -- including his 1975 Blue Note debut Pressure Sensitive -- as well as tracks and albums in no less than six other categories. He has worked as an in-demand session man and live musician with a who's-who of jazz and R&B greats including Ramsey Lewis, Gregory Porter, B.B. King, George Duke, Quincy Jones, Stanley Jordan, and dozens more. Laws, the younger brother of flutist Hubert Laws, is the product of a musical family. Two of his sisters, Debra and Eloise, are also professional singers. Born in Houston, Texas, Laws began teaching himself to play the alto saxophone at the age of 11. While his first love was baseball, a serious eye injury ended those dreams early and he focused on music, which he studied in high school, at Stephen F. Austin State, and later at Texas Southern University, where he switched to tenor, earned a degree, and developed a progressive mastery and technique. In 1970 he moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of a musical career. He woodshedded with the Jazz Crusaders (Hubert had played with them in the '50s) and especially Hugh Masakela. His early gigs in the city were with pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., Doug Carn, and on his brother's CTI recordings. In 1972, he joined Earth, Wind & Fire for 18 months and was, in effect, its first saxophonist, playing both tenor and soprano; he played on the album Last Days and Time. In Los Angeles, he made the acquaintance of Donald Byrd. The two became friends and Byrd got Laws signed to Blue Note. His 1975 debut, Pressure Sensitive, got serious radio play despite landing at 73, and yielded the enduring jazz-funk classic "Always There." It has been covered and/or sampled by well over 100 artists. Laws was on his way. With his other '70s work -- 1976's Fever, Friends and Strangers, and Flame -- which boasted his first cross continental 12" hit "All for You," Laws established himself as a workhorse studio musician, playing on recordings by Ramsey Lewis, his sister Eloise, Arthur Adams, Gene McDaniels, and Wayne Henderson, to name a few. In the '80s, Laws was an international festival and club draw. Three singles from his first three albums all went gold, as did their respective long-players. Despite the fact that he is often characterized strictly as a "smooth jazz" artist, Laws might be the first instrumentalist to score hits in the emerging "quiet storm" subgenre of R&B. The Midnight Hour - "Jazz Is Dead (Georgia Anne Muldrow Geemix)" from the 2021 album Remixes JID010 on Jazz Is Dead. As The Midnight Hour, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge collaborate with a long list of incredible musicians to make a fusion of soul, jazz, and hip hop that's inspired by the sophisticated sounds of yesteryears. Their acclaimed 2018 self-titled debut was star-studded featuring the likes of features from CeeLo Green, Raphael Saadiq, Marsha Ambrosius, Bilal, Eryn Allen Kane, Karolina, and more. In 2020, the duo expanded their reach by creating the imprint Jazz Is Dead, where “younger artists are elaborating upon conversations started decades ago; jazz icons are utilizing vintage equipment to create new masters with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad; the same equipment that recorded their coveted catalogs.” In the past two years, they've released 10 albums of recordings that take on the scores of composers past to bring into the present. As the final chapter in the initial run of Jazz Is Dead releases, Remixes JID010 continues the creative catharsis of an exhilarating new chapter in jazz music. Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad tapped nine iconic creators to reimagine their personal favorites from Jazz Is Dead's catalogue to-date, who created striking new versions of songs by Marcos Valle, Roy Ayers, Gary Bartz, Azymuth, João Donato, Doug Carn, Brian Jackson and The Midnight Hour. Holding the line taut like a bass string, Younge & Muhammad only invited those special musical alchemists who have previously participated in Jazz Is Dead happenings, or those who are slated to share that stage soon. Our Song of the Day sees the prolific songwriter, rapper, musician, singer, and producer Georgia Anne Muldrow take on the title track of the series and label, “Jazz Is Dead.” Muldrow's version completely reinvents the jazzy and percussion-heavy original into a slinky trip-hop track with the lyrics stretched out and lingered on in serpentine fashion. Sparkling electronic glitches and synth keys replace the brass, drums, and piano of the original, for a smooth, contemporary imagining of the song. Over his time as a guitarist, Rod has performed and recorded with countless artists and the list continues to grow. Artists such as songstress Regina Belle, J. Holiday, Miki Howard, jazz trumpeter Russell Gunn, Eightball and MJG, Musiq Soulchild, Jagged Edge, Donell Jones, Lloyd, the legendary Fred Wesley of the JBs, jazz organist Doug Carn, Howard Hewitt of Shalamar, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Maysa of Incognito, jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, Joi, Syleena Johnson, Bishop Paul S. Morton, Grammy award winning singers Monica, Jennifer Holliday, Dionne Farris, and many others. Rod was also recently nominated for a 2017 Grammy Award for his musical contribution to Neo-Soul Legend Musiq Soulchild’s latest album “Feel The Real”. In addition to performing and touring, Rod has created a catalog of music of his own. In 2016, Rod released his debut jazz-funk album "The Counsel Of Elders". Rod's music is available on all music Internet stores (iTunes, Spotify, Rhapsody, etc.) Rod's single, "How It Feels" that features Musiq Soulchild, has garnered acclaim amongst Underground DJs in the U.K., Japan, as well the U.S. Rod’s latest release is an EP titled “Exits & Options” (June 2018) in which he masterfully merges Hip-Hop, Soul, and Modern Jazz.
In Hour 1 it's singer, songwriter and producer Nick Hakim, who grew up in a household overflowing with musical diversity and cites influences ranging from Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, to Madlib and MF Doom, to South American folk and DC punk. He independently built a following through the release of his critically acclaimed self-released EPs Where Will We Go, Pt. 1 and Where Will We Go, Pt 2. May 2017 marked the release of his debut full-length album, 'Green Twins', which featured contributions from Jesse & Forever and the Onyx Collective and was an experimental step forward with emotional heft gleaned from experiences in the years since the first EPs. He had this to say about his mix; "These are songs that I love right now.. I appreciate you taking the time to listen. With all this madness happening around us, listening to music is where I always find solitude and peace. Have a nice day and enjoy. Be safe out here" In Hour 2 we hand over to Astronautica, a singer/songwriter and electronic producer whose music captures the eclectic nature of Los Angeles’ experimental beat scene and its connections to different cultures around the globe. She was drawn into the L.A.’s underground musical community swirling around Low End Theory, and quickly became addicted to the burgeoning beat sounds of the West Coast. She has been signed to Alpha Pup Records for the last five years, and has launched a slew of widely acclaimed releases with the label. Her latest album is Death Valley, which she wrote and recorded over the last three years at her home studio in Los Angeles. She told us; "This is a collection of songs that I'm currently listening to, songs that have been an inspiration in some of my past works, and my latest tracks off of my most recent LP, 'Death Valley.' Living in LA, I spend a lot of time in my car driving through many streets and neighborhoods, my favorite is when I'm driving late at night after all the traffics subsided listening to music with the windows down, I made this mix to evoke that feeling." An interview with legendary organist and lyricist Doug Carn, famous for recordings on the Black Jazz label like "Infant Eyes" and "Revelation", as well as his recent live release "My Spirit". Doug is appearing Sunday Jan 15th in Daytona at the Museum of Arts and Sciences, so he stopped by for a chat. We got pretty in depth, particularly about his early career. The man has quite a mind, and is fascinating to listen to. For info on the concert click here.Jazz Greats airs every Tuesday on WFCF from 3-7 eastern (with a break at 5). You can tune in via iHeart by clicking here. Thanks for stopping by! - DJ Kendo (Kenny MacKenzie)
