La novità che Jazz Anthology presenta questa sera ci serve anche per rendere omaggio a Keith Tippett, una delle perdite più dolorose tra le tante che il mondo della musica ha sofferto nell'anno che ci siamo appena lasciati alle spalle. In autunno, per l'etichetta Discus, è uscito postumo The Monk Watches The Eagle. Non siamo di fronte ad una creazione di carattere jazzistico, e Tippett, che è compositore e direttore dell'opera, non suona il pianoforte: è una cantata per coro - i BBC Singers - per otto sassofoni - di cui quattro sono quelli dell'Apollo Saxophone Quartet, un complesso specializzato nell'esecuzione di un repertorio contemporaneo d'avanguardia per sax, e altri quattro sono invece degli improvvisatori, i due più noti sono Paul Dunmall e Chris Biscoe - e con la formidabile voce solista di Julie Tippett a cui si devono anche i testi. Si tratta di un lavoro contemporaneo di grande intensità, meditativo per un verso, ma anche dinamico e incisivo, a cui Tippett - che lo aveva dedicato al padre - teneva molto. The Monk Watches The Eagle è stato registrato dal vivo nel 2004, in occasione della sua prima esecuzione. Con un brano registrato a Ruvo di Puglia nello stesso anno da Tippett con la formazione pugliese Canto General, concludiamo la puntata ricordando il forte rapporto di Tippett con l'Italia, e il seguito e le amicizie che ha avuto nel nostro paese.

Tributamos al gran pianista y compositor británico Keith Tippett, quien lamentablemente falleció a los 72 años el domingo 14 de junio pasado. Tippett es reconocido como uno de los músicos más destacados del jazz europeo de los últimos 40 años y también, por haber juntado escenas de distintas proveniencias, como el jazz, el rock progresivo, la música clásica contemporánea y la música africana. Aparte su aporte fundamental en tres discos de King Crimson, Tippett lideró numerosos proyectos. Entre ellos, el enorme ensamble de 50 músicos Centipede, el cuarteto Mujician, sus celebrados grupos jazzeros Keith Tippett Group y Keith Tippett Sextet y su trabajo solista, solo por nombrar sus iniciativas musicales más conocidas. En este capítulo de homenaje, lo escucharemos específicamente en los discos de King Crimson, “In The Wake Of Poseidon” (1970) y “Lizard” (1970), en el célebre álbum “Dedicated to You, But You Weren't Listening” (1971) de The Keith Tippett Group y, finalmente, con la versión de ‘Septober Energy’ de Centipede, en la interpretación en vivo de Mujician y The Georgian Ensemble, aparecida en el álbum “The Bristol Concert”, grabado en 1991 pero publicado en 2000.

Dopo la morte di Mogezi Feza, i Blue Notes quando si riuniscono sono adesso in quattro: e cioè Chris McGregor al piano, Dudu Pukwana al sax alto, Johnny Dyani al contrabbasso e Louis Moholo alla batteria. Nell'aprile del '77 vengono registrati dal vivo all'100 Club a Londra, e la Ogun ne trae un album, Blue Notes in Concert, che viene pubblicato nel '78, e più tardi riproposto, con materiale supplementare, in Cd. La formidabile coppia ritmica Harry Miller/Louis Moholo lavora fra l'altro nei picoli gruppi di Elton Dean e nel Ninesense del sassofonista, una delle più eccitanti formazioni della scena inglese dell'epoca: una straordinaria testimonianza del livello del Ninesense di Dean col contributo di Miller e Moholo la offre una registrazione amatoriale del '79, diventata nel 2012 un doppio Cd, anche questa effettuata all'100 Club, da cui prendiamo un ampio brano. Stellare, la formazione oltre a Dean, Miller e Moholo allinea Alan Skidmore, Marc Charig, Harry Beckett, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, Keith Tippett.
La dedizione alla musica creativa e improvvisata, una musica senza l'appoggio di grandi case discografiche, senza grandi management, senza visibilità sulla radio e la televisione e senza riconoscimenti ufficiali è una battaglia eroica, e la lotta per la sopravvivenza, particolarmente dura in Gran Bretagna, assieme allo stress dell'esilio si traducono in una esperienza traumatica. Alla fine del '75, a soli trent'anni, muore Mongezi Feza, grande trombettista e compositore di brani di commovente bellezza. Pochi giorni dopo la sua scomparsa, gli altri Blue Notes a Londra incidono - suonando senza soluzione di continuità per tre ore e mezzo, senza nulla di preordinato - l'album Blue Notes for Mongezi, pubblicato poco tempo dopo dalla Ogun come doppio Lp, e parecchi anni dopo sempre dalla Ogun in versione più estesa in Cd doppio. Moholo partecipa a molti gruppi e incisioni intestati a Harry Miller: Moholo è alla batteria negli album di Miller - pubblicati dalla Ogun - Family Affair (inciso nel '77) e In Conference (inciso nel '78), in cui intervengono diversi dei più bei nomi del jazz inglese. Miller a sua volta è al contrabbasso nel primo album di Moholo come leader, Spirit Rejoice! inciso a Londra nel '78 e pubblicato nello stesso anno dalla Ogun: Moholo è alla testa di un ottetto con Evan Parker al sax tenore, Kenny Wheeler alla tromba, Nick Evans e Radu Malfatti ai tromboni, Keith Tippett al piano, e al contrabbasso, oltre a Miller, anche Johnny Dyani.

Pianist Keith Tippett is a musician of extraordinary breadth and vision. His projects range from the vast 50-piece orchestra Centipede - so large it had its own private plane for touring - to introspective improvised solo concerts. He joins Alyn Shipton to pick the highlights of a recorded catalogue that spans over forty years, and which not only contains his ensembles large and small, but several surprises as well. Keith Tippett is one of Britain's most inventive musicians, although nowadays he something of a prophet without honour in his own land, celebrated in Europe, but performing infrequently at home. This edition of Jazz Library demonstrates just what local audiences have been missing, in a fascinating spread of music in which Tippett handles sprawling big bands with the same sureness of touch as he applies to his own piano playing. The programme includes his large groups Tapestry, Ark and Centipede, his current band Mujician, the celebratory Dedication Orchestra which commemorates the cream of South African jazz players, and Keith's long musical partnership with his wife, Julie Tippetts, who was formerly known as the pop singer Julie Driscoll, with her top ten hit for Brian Auger "Wheels on Fire".
