A conversation between artist Samia Halaby and Sanna Almajedi, recorded live following a performance at e-flux on September 10, 2024. In the performance, Halaby used a computer program that she coded in the early '90s to generate abstract shapes. These were manipulated in real-time alongside sonic improvisation by musician Amir ElSaffar. Samia Halaby is a trailblazer in contemporary abstract art internationally. In her distinctive painting style, Halaby draws inspiration from nature and historical movements such as early Islamic architecture and the Soviet avant-garde. Displaced from Palestine in 1948 with her family when she was eleven, Halaby was educated in the American Midwest at a time when abstract expressionism was popular but female abstract painters were marginalized. Halaby believes that new approaches to painting can transform our ways of seeing and thinking, not only within aesthetics, but also as a way to discover new perspectives for advances in teaching, technology, and society at large. This conviction has inspired her to pursue additional experiments in drawing, printmaking, computer-based kinetic art, and free-from-the-stretcher painting. Halaby's work is collected by many museums such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art (New York and Abu Dhabi); Cleveland Museum of Art; Institut du Monde Arabe; and Birzeit University (Ramallah).
We partnered with Habibi Festival for a six-night celebration of ancient + contemporary sounds from Lebanon, Tunisia, Syria, Morocco, Palestine, Algeria and more! It all took place from October 1-7 at Joe's Pub in NYC. Each night we taped live conversations with the artists on stage. This special Quartertones episode is the second of six, featuring a conversation with mother-son duo Firas Zreik – who has previously joined us on Quartertones – and Amal Murkus, as well as snaps from their performances at Joe's Pub. Amal Murkus is a Palestinian singer, actress, producer, TV & Radio host. Born and raised in Kufer Yasef in the Galilee, her career has been dedicated to the promotion, preservation and enrichment of Palestinian music and culture around the world. Her music is pioneering in its creation of a post-modern musical style that brings different Mediterranean influences together.Firas Zreik is an artist, composer, lyricist and educator. A Palestine-born New Yorker, Zreik has revolutionized global perceptions of the Kanun instrument. While still preserving its identity as a vital part of the Maqam tradition, Zreik has "stretched its potential as a cultural chameleon enhancing a range of fresh, evolving sounds." He has collaborated with a number of leaders including Roger Waters, Simon Shaheen, Amir ElSaffar, Fabrizio Cassol and his internationally-renowned mother and frequent artistic partner Amal Murkus, for who he works as musical director.THIS SERIES IS PART OF THE AFIKRA PODCAST NETWORK QuarterTones is afikra's music podcast which hosts current Arab musicians from different geographies who play contemporary and modern music, including alternative scene or hip-hop, electronic, classical music, among other genres. Today is the 20th anniversary of the U.S invasion of Iraq, which marked the beginning of the Iraq War. Amir ElSaffar is a classically trained Iraqi-American trumpeter, vocalist, composer, and Satur player, who returned to his father's native country before the war to study with masters of Iraqi Maqam, the classical musical tradition of Iraq. Inspired by the 20th anniversary of the invasion, ElSaffar is performing a string of concerts with his ensembles to mourn the suffering of the Iraqi people, and celebrate Iraqi culture. He joins to preview the concerts and talk about his music. ElSaffar will be performing at Drom NYC on April 2, Rutgers-Newark on April 10, and Symphony Space on April 14. This segment is guest-hosted by Tiffany Hanssen.

Amir ElSaffar has spent much of his life in search of the ecstatic moments that help connect to something bigger. In his case, he does this through his relationship with music and culture. Trying to define or even explain what he does is not so simple, even for him. He leads five ensembles and has released seven albums over the past 16 years. His primary instrument is the trumpet, and he has devoted much of his career to expanding the vocabulary of the instrument. He also sings in the Arabic maqam idiom and plays the santur, the Iraqi hammered dulcimer. As a composer and band leader, he's devoted to what he calls “transcultural creation” in which he explores the space in between jazz, Iraqi Maqam music, and various other musical traditions from around the world, which have included Spanish flamenco, and Egyptian tarab. In late 2021 he released The Other Shore with his Rivers of Sound ensemble. We spoke recently about his ongoing search for the ecstatic by way of what he describes as the human “sea of connectivity”, how working with Vijay Iyer, Rudresh Mahanthappa and Cecil Taylor influenced him, the value of coming of age in Chicago, and how his Zen Buddhist practice has helped him to “lift the veil” between his sense of what's outside of him and what's inside. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.amirelsaffar.com/

Trumpeter/vocalist/composer Amir ElSaffar is a Chicago native of Iraqi-American heritage. A visionary musician with a prominent background in classical music and jazz, ElSaffar is also a purveyor of old, endangered Arabic music. He is particularly fond of the Iraqi maqam, which he performs actively as a vocalist and santur player, and has integrated in his eclectic and idiosyncratic artistic vision. His new album, The Other Shore, was released earlier this year via Outhere and marks a further evolution for his Rivers of Sound ensemble, which has grown to become a 17-piece all-star lineup featuring instruments of various cultures and backgrounds. Yet, As ElSaffar explains via an official statement: "I'm less interested in the surface intermingling of cultures and more fascinated by the sonic possibilities in this unique combination of instruments from around the world." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jazziz/support

Starting in 2014 in NYC, our mission has always been two-pronged: cultivate curiosity and build community. We've hosted intimate salon-style events all over the world that feature in-depth presentations on topics related to the Arab world, given by members of our community. What makes afikra different is that our programs and platform are designed to engage our community to ask their own questions, and provide an open community of peers who support each other as we all look for the answers together. Our vision is to build a global community of curious minds who are interested in promoting intellectualism and deepening our communal knowledge of the Arab region.
As jazz was born where cultures converged, it's not a surprise that it is the most adaptable form of music. An art form permeable since its very inception to musical traditions from other continents. This week we focus on the contribution of musicians that approached jazz and improvised music benefiting from the wider perspective afforded to them by the exposure to not only American culture but also the traditions of the places of origin of their families, which hailed from Asian countries like China, India, Iraq, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, the Philippines and Vietnam. The playlist features Susie Ibarra, Cuong Vu, Ben Kono, Amir ElSaffar, Fred Ho, Amirtha Kidambi, Edge, Peggy Chew, Rajna Swaminathan, Brooklyn Raga Massive, Vijay Iyer, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Rez Abbasi, Jon Jang, Jen Shyu, Tomas Fujiwara, Taylor Ho Bynum, Jon Irabagon, Miles Okazaki, Ha-Yang Kim. In this Obermann Conversation, jazz musician Amir ElSaffar (Hancher guest artist) and playwright Lisa Schlesinger (Professor, UI Theatre Department) share their journeys as artist-activists whose work interprets strife and crisis for audiences that may feel removed from such global events. What tools do artists have to elucidate violence and injustice that might feel distant or even unimportant to some audiences? What can musicians, theater makers, and other artists add to conversations that might otherwise be relegated to politicians? The Obermann Center for Advanced Studies supports artists, scholars, and researchers – independently and in cross-disciplinary collaborations – as they unearth, explain, and engage the past, and invent the future. For more information about their programming, visit https://obermann.uiowa.edu/. Moderated by Hancher Presents co-host Micah Ariel James, this episode was recorded before a live audience at the Iowa City Public Library on Tuesday, February 6th.
What you'll hear: - How and why Amir ultimately chose jazz over classical after studying both through college - What he did after college to seek out a specific sound he was craving... and it didn't even exist yet - The unique learning style that has been lost over generations, the human connection it creates and how this style greatly impacted his trumpet playing - What he realized about combining musical styles and what that actually means for the preservation and evolution of a musical tradition ... and much more. New York-based composer Amir ElSaffar has triumphantly found that sweet spot of innovation not reduction when uniting two musical genres. Not Two, his latest release as a bandleader, features his Rivers of Sound orchestra fusing elements of Middle Eastern music with jazz and vocals. The santur and trumpet player's 17-piece ensemble not only reflects the heritage of his Iraqi father but also finds its inspiration in Amir's spirituality. As with most double-albums, Not Two's ninety minutes are overflowing with possibilities that reward with each passing listen. Regarding that old adage about asking a busy person if you need something done: well, in the case of bandleader/composer Mary Halvorson it may get completed but you could be waiting a long time. Since 2005 the Brooklyn-based jazz guitarist has released nearly two dozen albums in various permutations including in a duo, trio, quartet and on last year's octet release, Away With You. The avant-garde jazz of Away With You appeared on numerous "best of 2016" lists including number one on Nate Chinen's New York Times picks/round-up. With little sign of slowing down, Mary continues to tour all over the world and is working on her first album to feature vocals. On today's show, composer, alto saxophonist and the new Director of Jazz at Princeton University, Rudresh Mahanthappa. Rudresh Mahanthappa came out of Boulder Colorado, was educated by Berklee College of Music and DePaul, and received national attention not long after moving to New York in 1998 where he soon beginning collaborating with the then up-and-coming, now major jazz force, pianist Vijay Iyer. Besides making a series of major statements with Iyer, Mahanthappa has collaborated with guitarist Rez Abbasi and trumpeter Amir ElSaffar for some of the freshest and most-ground-breaking jazz releases of the last decade. He's won the yearly Downbeat Poll multiple times, has had a string of recordings under his own name for Innova, Pi Recordings and the Clean Feed label.and BIRD CALLS, honoring the work of Charlie Parker is his latest on the ACT Music label. Rudresh has reached out to the Princeton community, checking in with WPRB in Princeton, where DJs have been playing his music for over a decade. He dropped in to WPRB's studios late in his first semester teaching there, and was very warm and open, excitingly talking about his plans for the Princeton Jazz program but he also talks about learning his craft in primary school, taking the alto saxophone into the future, working with the elusive Bunky Green, losing a sax in Hurricane Sandy and what's next in his recording and performing career. Artists like Rudressh and Vijay Iyer and their many collaborators, as well as guitarist Mary Halvorson, pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist William Parker, flutist Nicole Mitchell, and still-vital elder statesmen like drummer Jack DeJohnette, composer Henry Threadgill and countless others are what make the weekly jazz show I program at WPRB-Princeton seem to endlessly rejuvenate, despite uninformed naysayers repeating that “jazz is dead” nonsense.

In 2002, Iraqi-American jazz and classical trumpeter Amir ElSaffar put his New York career on hold to study the music of his father's ancestral past. He traveled to Iraq, throughout the Middle East, and to Europe to learn from master artists who could teach him the centuries-old tradition of the Iraqi maqam, the classical Arab system of melodic modes and compositions that is one of Iraq's great artistic legacies. He became versed in Iraqi maqam, learned to sing its modes and melodies, and studied the santur (hammered dulcimer). Now he leads Safaafir, the only ensemble in the United States performing Iraqi maqam. At the same time, he developed new techniques for the trumpet in order to produce the kinds of microtones and ornaments characteristic of Arab music. In 2006, ElSaffar applied his knowledge of Iraqi-Arabic music to jazz. His Two Rivers Suite invokes ancient Iraqi musical traditions and frames them in a modern jazz setting. The compositions are based on Iraqi maqam melodies, each of which is believed to have a unique spiritual essence, or ruhiyya, and to embody an aspect of Iraq's history and culture. Each ruhiyya can be understood as a loose melody: malleable, free, and open to interpretation and variation but, at the same time, distinct and recognizable. Singers improvise and composers write songs, creating endless possibilities but always maintaining the original feeling of the ruhiyya. The movements of Two Rivers Suite are based on various ruhiyya from the Iraqi maqam repertoire, providing a point of departure for composition and improvisation. Each section explores a different mode of interaction between Arab music and jazz, blurring the lines that typically distinguish conventional "jazz," "Arab," or "Iraqi" sensibilities. These maqam melodies often contain non-Western tunings and are set to heavy grooves, free jazz-like ensemble playing, and multi-layered sound textures. ElSaffar and his Two Rivers ensemble meld styles and cross-pollinate the languages of ancient and modern, East and West. ElSaffar's compositions are some of the first in jazz to make use of Arab modality and its non-Western tunings. Two Rivers is a journey through Iraq's glorious and tragic past and present. It expresses ElSaffar's personal struggle as an Iraqi American watching his father's homeland in turmoil and destruction. The CD of Two Rivers (Pi Recordings, 2007) was named to top-ten lists for jazz recordings by the Boston Globe and Philadelphia City Paper and was runner-up for top debut jazz release in the Village Voice.
