** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 8: The son of pivotal P-Funk matchmaker, singer and Parlet member Mallia Franklin – also known as the Queen of Funk – and New Birth drummer Nate Neblett. Growing up in and around the Parliament-Funkadelic camp, guest Seth Neblett is a photographer and manager who has worked with artists that include Miki Howard, Maxi B of the Mary Jane Girls, Sheila E, Apollonia and Chaka Khan. For the past several years he has been working on the definitive book covering P-Funk's unsung female singers, called Mothership Connected: The Story of the Women of Parliament-Funkadelic. It is scheduled to drop in August 2025. RECORDED OCTOBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. On this episode of Roger The Wild Child Show: Hollyweird we are joined my two time Grammy winning music publisher, Tony Mercedes!TONY MERCEDESIt was never a secret that Atlanta-based music mogul Tony Mercedes would be at the forefront of the music industry one day. It may have been a shock to those radio and music executives who turned down Mercedes' first song: “Dazzey Dukes” which became the club dance anthem all across the nation in 1992 and generated sales exceeding five million records sold. He was assured early on that year that his debut single “ Dazzey Dukes” would never even leave the State of Florida where he had previously attended the “Jack the Rapper” convention. Not taking “No” for an answer, Mercedes launched his own independent record label out of his hometown Augusta, Georgia. With $2,300.00 Mercedes embarked on what others thought was insane as an amateur to the music industry. That persistence and determination led Mercedes to the top of the music industry and “Dazzey Dukes” to the top of the Billboard charts- making it one of many of Mercedes longest charting records in Billboard history (56 consecutive weeks). Ever since then Mercedes has made unforgettable footprints in this business we call music. Now as President and CEO of Tony Mercedes Music he has risen to the occasion as a creative genius. His ears have been golden in picking number one hit after hits. With songs like TLC's No Scrubs, and Tag Team's five time platinum release “ Whomp There It Is”, and 12- Gauges one time platinum release “ Donkey Butt”.Tony Mercedes added a new meaning to being a Baby's Daddy when he took B- Rock and the Biz explosively to the top of the Billboard charts with a comedic record titled “My Baby's Daddy.” If that wasn't enough Mercedes changed the course of bass history when he released a bass remake of Shirley Murdock's song “ As We Lay” within three weeks after its release it received almost 2,000 spins a week at radio. When it was time for LaFace Records most selling female group of all time TLC to release their third album after a five year absence – it was Mercedes who came in like a thief in the night finding TLC's first single. “No Scrubs” written by Tiny & Kandi of the recording group Escape. “No Scrubs” rocketed straight to platinum, success. Mercedes A&R skills are responsible for TLC having this song, which is the most BDS detected record in the history of music (how is that for the Mercedes touch).” No Scrubs” was found with a then unknown producer Shekspere. Proving that he was no scrub. Tony Mercedes ended up having the number one pop song in the country. During yet another exciting time in his career, Mercedes also had the number one rap song and the same time with JT Money's catchy “ Who Dat” song released through Priority Records. Lets not forget his success on Pressha's Platinum R&B Record, “Splackavellie” which was featured on Ice Cubes “Player Club” soundtrack. According to the May 8th issue of Billboard Magazine, Mercedes had the number on pop song, “No Scrubs”, the number one rap song “Who Dat” and the number one R&B song “No Scrubs” all in the same week on Billboard charts! Fast forward to 2018 the impact of the Tony Mercedes imprint can still be heard by his involvement as music publisher of Grammy Award Winning song “ Shape of You” by music superstar Ed Sheeran. Tony Mercedes has worked with so many great artist such as Usher, Babyface, Ceelo Green, Regina Belle, Miki Howard, Aaron Hall just to name a few. Tony Mercedes also recently managed the career of film and comedy superstar Tiffany Haddish.

The Legendary MIKI HOWARD is back and shining brightly with a soulful and gusty remake of an old Abbey Lincoln tune "Throw It Away". It was already reached #1 on the UK Soul chart and is climbing the charts here in the US as well! We welcome this incredible artist back with open arms and are honored to have her on our podcast. We laughed, fussed, talked about her past and present endeavors and just had a great time. Listen in as we converse with this iconic lady of soul.Born in Chicago, Illinois, Alicia Michelle "Miki" Howard was the daughter of two well-known gospel singers. Her father, Clay Graham, sang with the Pilgrim Jubiliees and her mother, Josephine Howard, was a member of the Caravans, a group that would eventually be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When Howard was in her early teens, her mother moved the family to Los Angeles. Already aiming at a career in music, the 15-year-old Howard received her first break when she participated in a teen beauty contest. Augie Johnson, leader of the group Side Effect, happened to be in the audience; impressed with Howard's singing talent, Howard also joined the lineup of Side Effect in 1978 when another singer departed. She sang with Side Effect until 1982. Howard signed a contract with Atlantic Records in the mid-1980s and recorded her first solo album, “Come Share My Love”, in 1986. The title track from the album was its first single, hitting the top ten of the R&B charts and reaching number five in late 1986. A remake of the pop standard "Imagination," which Howard had fought to include on “Come Share My Love”, was another hit from the album. Howard's second solo album, 1988's “Love Confessions”, offered another top-five R&B hit with "Baby Be Mine." "That's What Love Is," a duet with Gerald Levert, also hit the R&B charts. In the meantime, Howard's third solo album,” Miki Howard”, was released in 1989 and proved her most commercially successful to date. The single "Ain't Nuthin' in the World" became Howard's first number-one hit on the R&B charts and another song, "Love Under New Management," followed it to number two and became one of Howard's signature tunes. Howard continued with a successful solo career after switching to Giant Records in 1991. Her first single under her new contract, "Ain't Nobody like You," became Howard's second number-one R&B hit. The subsequent album, 1992's “Femme Fatale”, featured Howard's renditions of classic tracks originally performed by Dinah Washington ("This Bitter Earth") and Billie Holiday ("Good Morning Heartache"). After a casting director saw her perform some Billie Holiday tunes at a New York City concert at Radio City Music Hall, Howard was offered the chance to portray Holiday in a nightclub scene in director Spike Lee's 1992 film “Malcolm X”. The following year, Howard recorded an entire album of Holiday songs, “Miki Sings Billie”, including her favorite Holiday tune, "Don't Explain." In 1993, Howard made another movie appearance in director John Singleton's “Poetic Justice”. She released “Live Plus” in 1996 and a comeback album of original material, “Can't Count Me Out”, in 1997. After a four year hiatus, “Three Wishes”, was released in 2001 to excellent reviews. The album earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional R&B Recording. She followed that with “Pillow Talk” (2006), “Private Collection” (2008), “I Choose To Be Happy” (2015) and a live recording “Miki Howard- Live In Concert” in 2015. Howard was featured on the second season on TV One's critically acclaimed bio-series “Unsung”. Miki's episode was the highest rated of her season and in 2015 was adaListen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. I am very proud to welcome the Multi-Talented Miki Howard. Her Journey is incredible and her wisdom is sure to inspire all of us. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Alicia Michelle "Miki" Howard was the daughter of two well-known gospel singers. Miki's episode was the highest rated of her season and in 2015 was adapted into a TV movie for TV One to be released in June of 2016 with “Chi-Raq” actress Teyonah Parris in the lead role.

Christopher Williams (born August 22, 1967) is an American singer–songwriter and actor. Williams, who emerged during the late 1980s as a recording artist for Geffen Records, has scored many R&B hit singles, notably "Talk to Myself" (1989), "I'm Dreamin'" (1991) and "Every Little Thing U Do" (1993). The single "I'm Dreamin'", from the New Jack City soundtrack, became a No. 1 single on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks charts. After a six-year hiatus from recording music, he returned to the scene with Real Men Do on the indie label Renegade, in 2001. It received a glowing, flattering review in Ebony Magazine that summer. In between solo pursuits, he has been a contributor to Alex Bugnon's "As Promised," with a smooth-jazz version of Mary J. Blige's "All That I Can Say," featured on "In Your World" with Twista & The Speedknot Mobstas, a very up-tempo track on the soundtrack of "Doctor Dolittle," and on the Cafe Soul All-Stars CD with a single titled "Used To Be." Other soundtrack contributions include: "Tha 2 of Us" from the film Bulletproof, "Superhero" from the film Butter, "Boom and the Bang" (featuring R&B songstress Monifah) and "I'm Yours" from the soundtrack of the stage play Men Cry in the Dark, and "Stranger In My Life" from the film Gunmen. Additional collaborations throughout his career include: "Round and Round" and "No Sunshine" from the CD Phuture Flava, "Love You More Than Words Can Say" from the CD Soul Blitz Allstars, "I Hope That We Can Be Together Soon" (a duet with Miki Howard), "You Are So Fine" (a duet with Shae), "Can't Wait To Be With You" from the DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince release Code Red, "I Wanna B Ure Lover" from the F.S. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Alicia Michelle "Miki" Howard was the daughter of two well-known gospel singers.

Tracy Cruz has a voice that will melt even the toughest of hearts. This vocal powerhouse aims to connect communities with her universal language of love, hope, and happiness. Her unique musical and lyrical blend -- Bay Area urban soul tinged with the influence of her indigenous Filipino roots --has captured the ears of music lovers around the world. Boasting a vocal range that might be bigger than her, Cruz emanates a classic and timeless feel. Two full-length albums (Feel’osophy and Universoul Symphony) and an EP (Illuminate Love) have garnered numerous awards and nominations including two Bay Area Black Music Awards for "Best CD/Recorded Performance" and "Bay Area Rising Star" as well as Northern California Entertainers Music Award nominations for "Female Neo Soul Artist of the Year" and "Female Entertainer of the Year.” She has supported several established acts including: Kenny Lattimore, Miki Howard, Keke Wyatt and others. The songstress approaches her music unapologetically and freely, staying true to herself, while her stellar band provides a grown and sexy soundtrack for her vocal creations. Most recently, they completed a 17-venue, 4 month “SOULShine Tour” around California. Cruz continues to grow personally and musically, introducing a new chapter into her musical journey. Her newest single, "Losing in Love” is perhaps her most vulnerable composition to date. It is a prelude to the collection of raw emotions captured on her upcoming EP “H3artifacts.” Paired down to only a piano and vocals, the record conveys the ultimate form of musical vulnerability and fragility. Digging deep into a broken heart, the record explores themes of love, loss, pain, and hope. “I wrote ‘Losing in Love’ during a very painful time in my life. I felt like my heart was breaking into a million pieces and I was losing everything all at once. I couldn't stop crying so I poured out all of my emotions and wrote a song. It was a cathartic release,” shares Cruz. She is fearless
