In this episode of Great Practice, Great Life®, Steve Riley explores time management and focus strategies with Shawn McNalis, an Atticus Practice Advisor and trainer with over 30 years of experience. Together, they uncover the most common time traps that prevent attorneys from reaching their full potential. They also share proven strategies for defending strategic time blocks and establishing boundaries that support professional growth. Shawn brings her wealth of knowledge from coaching thousands of lawyers and co-authoring pivotal books on time management and performance. Steve and Shawn delve into the “time starvation trap”—a common pitfall where attorneys confuse busyness with true productivity. Through the lens of The Habit Shift workshop, they reveal how ineffective time habits often go unnoticed until they become overwhelming. They share the story of Jordan, a family law attorney who used time management tools to reclaim her schedule. By protecting strategic time blocks and focusing on high-value work, Jordan boosted client development and significantly reduced stress. In another example, solo practitioner Taylor learned to combat overwork by delegating tasks, avoiding overcommitment, and conducting focused time audits. These changes gave her the bandwidth to think strategically and grow her firm. Shawn also discusses how the relentless pace of law school often carries into professional life, encouraging constant hustle over smart planning. Steve and Shawn lay out a practical roadmap for setting boundaries that promote both success and sanity. They highlight the value of time audits, client selection, and protecting strategic time like your business depends on it. Because it does! Whether you're a new attorney or a seasoned professional, this episode offers actionable strategies to improve your focus, reclaim your time, and transform both your practice and your life. In this episode, you will hear: Introduction to time management and focus strategies for attorneys, emphasizing productivity and overcoming time traps Insights from The Habit Shift workshop, focused on performance improvement through strategic time blocking and boundary-setting The “time starvation trap” and how time audits help prioritize high-value tasks, illustrated by Jordan's story Tips for managing competing priorities, including a segment on Alex, a team leader using a 90-day focus tool to align with firm partners Addressing the law firm culture of overwork, with practical guidance on task delegation and selective client intake Encouragement to intentionally design the practice and life you want through boundaries and high-impact habits Actionable advice to build self-awareness and put consistent effort into earning both success and personal fulfillment Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. Rose George is the author of four fantastic books (Nine Pints, Ninety Percent of Everything, the Big Necessity, and a Life Removed) that share a common theme: much of her work is about seeing the unseen. It's about those things that are ubiquitous and unnoticed, or more likely, obfuscated from us. In this episode, we focus on human waste, the shipping industry, and blood. Much of our conversation is about how we begin to see the waters we swim in, stop sanitizing our language to further obscure things, and use our awareness to create changes large and small. It's about breaking down taboos and letting individual stories of tragedy and triumph bring us into issues that matter. It's also a little bit about the shipping industry and how 90% of our goods get to us, how toilets can transform lives, and how period products can dramatically improve the lives of girls. It's always a joy catching up with composer Cris Velasco! This time around, we chat about his epic music for Lords of the Fallen, a souls-like action RPG with plenty of boss battles. He also clues me into another one of his recent scores, for a game called Fae Farm, He and I will talk more about that in a future episode, because it's delightful. As a former competitive weightlifter, strength coach, and now Chair of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at Vanderbilt Medical School, Dr. D.J. Kennedy specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of back issues that nearly all of us experience- including chronic back pain. “The numbers are 80 to 90% of people have low back pain at some point in their life,” says Dr. Kennedy in the bonus episode, “which tells me 10 to 20% of people have a bad memory.” Why is back pain so prevalent and persistent? Dr. Kennedy points to the complexity of spinal anatomy as a primary factor. "For the spine, we have L4-L5, L5- S1, “ says Kennedy, himself a back pain sufferer. “We have discs, we have facets, we have all kinds of things that can cause problems.” Formerly a Stanford Medical School Professor, Dr. Kennedy emphasizes both the variety of back issues patients can experience, and the necessity of prescribing a wide array of treatments to address these issues. While at Stanford, Dr. Kennedy trained in the Gokhale Method featured in our previous episode. He then began recommending it to patients, many of whom saw positive results. Are you a frequent back pain sufferer? Do you find yourself feeling back stiffness you thought might never happen to you? “Some songs demand sacrifice,” Rob Errera writes of the title song in his novel ‘Hangman's Jam,” a story that chronicles the rise of the band Allen Vent and The Strange Creations and the mysterious song that haunts and beguiles them. If you like your rock novels to come with a hearty dose of groupies, drug overdoses, sex tapes, and a side of murder, betrayal, and some freaky other-worldly creatures, you're in the right place. Speaking of mysterious and powerful songs, Zeena Schreck joins me in the last segment of the podcast to talk about the power certain songs have in spiritual and magical practices. Zeena is an artist, musician, Tibetan Buddhist yogini, as well as former High Priestess of the Church of Satan (founded by her late father Anton LaVey). Between 1988-1993, she was composer, vocalist, musician, and graphic designer for the sonic magical musical project Radio Werewolf. Zeena was also a guest in Episode 6 of Rock is Lit, which you can listen to here. Victoria is a fully plant based Olympic Taekwondo athlete and represented the beautiful country of Puerto Rico at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. She has been competing in the sport of Taekwondo for 21 years and is her passion and life. Victria has total of 17 scars on her knees because of a total of 6 knee surgeries. ACL reconstruction in 2010, meniscus and ACL reconstruction in 2012, two reconstruction ACL surgeries in 2013, a 15% meniscectomy of the meniscus in 2018 and a major meniscectomy of the meniscus in 2019. After her 6th knee surgery in 2019 ahe thought it to be impossible to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after hearing the shocking news that she had about 20% of her meniscus left over from surgery. However, through her faith in Jesus Christ she felt the need to continue and finish the race on to becoming an Olympian. Despite all those who doubted her and advised her to give it up, after a hard rehab process, Victoria returned to the sport. After falling short for the Rio 2016 Olympics, she preserved through all my set backs and qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on March 12, 2020. On this episode of the Sisters in Alchemy podcast, Jenna opens up and vulnerably shares about her experience with separateness and feeling alone. This podcast illuminates the truth that themes and stories that we carry with us and reinforce throughout life show up again and again, giving us many opportunities to grow, learn, and evolve with them. This happens so that we can gain perspective and rewrite those stories in this lifetime, ultimately imparting that wisdom on our soul. You (and all of us) came here to this earth, this life, in your body, so that you could experience the pain, hardship, beauty, joy, and everything in between, to learn soul lessons that can be carried with you forever. With unabashed vulnerability, Jenna shares her experiences from the past, craving friendship so deeply yet also being terrified to experience rejection and abandonment again. And she shares how acknowledging that fear and resistance and committing to growth and healing led her to the epitome of magic and manifestation, her friendship with Crystal. And yet, even with that experience and proof that it is possible, how the themes of separateness, of loneliness, of being to much, and too little continue to show up in her life, giving her more opportunities to move through, heal, and rewrite the story for good. Hopefully this podcast can remind you that whatever you are moving through, the fear or resistance that you feel in any area of your life, you are not alone, you are supported, loved, and held, and sometimes all that fear needs from you is to be acknowledged. Episode 50 “When I Grow Up I Wanna Be …”When you were young, were you ever asked what you wanted to be when you grew up?I know I was.And even when I wasn't asked, I thought about it. What would I be? There were so many options. One of the options I considered was … a research physicist. Now I know this will come as a surprise to the people who knew me back in my high school days. I have to admit, I did not exactly fit the profile of a future research physicist. But it wasn't my fault. I considered this particular option because of my brother.Yep, my own brother. You see, my brother was a good math student. Good isn't quite the word. He was an excellent math student.I remember he won an award for being one of the best high school math students in the City of Los Angeles. I grant you that L.A. was much smaller back then. There were only about two and one-half million people in the city.He was two years ahead of me in school and I remember if he walked by our kitchen table while I was struggling on my math homework, he would come over and look at the problem and my work (I call it work but most people would call it a hopeless effort). Then he would very clearly explain the problem and how to solve it. After his explanation, I understood the problem immediately and skated quickly through the rest of the homework assignment. Thanks to my brother, I was pretty good at math. Not as good as he was, but I got A's in my math courses. So, I have to blame my brother on planting this “research physicist” idea in my head.It was definitely his fault.I actually thought math was fun!In fact, I remember how excited I was when I got my first Pickett Slide Rule. The slide rule was the tool for real scientists and wannabe research physicists like me. [NOTE: This was before calculators.] And Pickett was the Cadillac of slide rules. But then something happened. That something was … my brother graduated from high school and went off to college. Now that was serious. My in-house tutor — the guy who understood math and could explain it so I could understand it — was no longer available.I quickly found out what that meant. When I began my Junior Year in high school, I was looking forward to my math class — Algebra 2.My teacher was Mr. DiRosario. Not only was he the head of the Math Department, but my brother had him for math classes before me. When Mr. DiRosario took roll the first day of class, after he read my name, he asked if I was Bob Morey's brother. When I said yes, you should have seen the smile that broke across his face. He was obviously thrilled to have another Morey in his class. So, things began well. The start of Algebra 2 is a review of Algebra 1, and I knew Algebra 1, so I did well at the beginning of the course. The problems started popping up when we moved into the new — some might say “hard” — material. I would work late at night trying to understand the homework. I was seldom successful. I would eventually come to understand the material but it was usually about two weeks after we had been tested on it.Which means the grades on my assignments and exams were less than stellar. My grandma would watch me working on my math homework, but she was no help at all when it came to explaining how to solve math problems. That was bad enough, but the kicker for me was going into the classroom each day. Daily math routineI don't know what your routine was when you took math in high school, but the first thing we did in class was exchange papers and grade the homework. Then Mr. DiRosario would would call several people to come up to the chalkboard and work out the problems that had been missed. Each student at the board would explain how to do the problem correctly.I remember one day when there was a problem on the homework that everyone in the class missed. Mr. DiRosario smiled at me and said, “Clint, show them how to do it.”I went to the chalkboard, wrote the problem out, and stared at it.I didn't have the slightest idea how to solve the problem. It seemed like I stood there forever, and I finally admitted I was clueless.I can still remember Mr. DiRosario's words to this day.He looked bewildered and asked, “Are you sure you're Bob Morey's brother?”That was the end of my plan to become a research physicist. There is a point to this storyWhy am I telling you this story? It isn't just to let you know that I was mathematically-challenged.I'm sharing this because of a news story I read last week.A college professor was fired from his job because he made the course too hard.He taught Organic Chemistry at New Your University.First of all, Organic Chemistry is hard.At least I think its hard. I never actually took the course in college. I got a C in high school Chemistry and didn't think Organic Chemistry would be a good option for me in college. But my wife was a Chemistry major and my daughter took the course as part of her program to become an R.N. And I got the impression from them that I made a wise decision not to take Organic Chemistry.Back to the story. At New York University (NYU), a bunch of students got together and signed a petition to have the professor removed from his position — I believe they call that “fired” — because the course was too hard.Oh, sure, he had a stellar history of teaching and had even authored a textbook on Organic Chemistry. But if the course was too hard for those students, it was obviously the professor's fault. The material was difficult but the course was a requirement for students who wanted to apply to medical school, and it was a large lecture-hall class (which many of the students didn't attend), and the professor paid to have videos of the key concepts of the course available on line (which many of the students did not watch), and the professor was available for one-on-one work with students who were having difficulties (which many of the students did not utilize). So, it was obvious … it had to be the professor's fault. It couldn't be the students' fault because they paid tuition to take the course. They deserved a good grade.Unfortunately, New York University let the professor go (another euphemism for fired). It's sad to see that education has reached that level of expectation among students. They exist so they DESERVE to get good grades.I really don't want surgeons operating on me because they paid their tuition at a medical school. I would prefer that they actually knew what they were doing. And I'm not all that comfortable being a passenger on an airline if the pilot and co-pilot got their license because they paid for a course. I would prefer if they learned how to fly. Then again … Maybe I should reconsider my job options. Perhaps I should become a research physicist. I understand the mean average pay for a physicist is $6,790 per month. I could deal with that.I know some potential employers might bring up the issue of me not having great math skills, but maybe it wasn't my fault that I got a C in high school Algebra 2. Maybe it was the teacher's fault.Yeah, I like that. Here are some resources I've found interesting recently.“Photos of Perfectly Formed 14-Week Miscarried Baby Are Saving Lives: ‘He Was Not Medical Waste.'” by Epoch Inspired Staff. We need to remember — or be made aware — of what is actually happening when an abortion happens.“If You are a Christian Leader, You Should Have a Target on Your Back” by Michael Brown. “My biggest challenge is finding the time to market and pitch myself outside of paid projects. I know I need to do it to ensure a consistent pipeline of clients in future, but I can't shake this weird feeling of guilt and worry when I'm not working on tasks that I can't invoice.” I loved this question from HerBusiness Member, Brittany, because it’s a trap that we can ALL fall into. We sell something and then we spend time delivering it. And that delivery time can be really intense, especially if you’re a solopreneur. While you’re busy making "the thing", delivering the training, doing the consultation, presenting the brief, doing the copy-editing, designing the website etc. etc., you have little time to focus on getting new clients. Clients want their jobs. And they want them now. And there’s just you, doing all the things. Maybe there’s someone helping you, but the responsibility of delivering the product or service is still squarely on your shoulders. Meanwhile, the pipeline of potential new clients isn’t being filled and you can find yourself in a cash flow crisis and with lumpy cash flow. So, how do you move away from good months and bad months to also working on projects that don’t immediately put money in your pocket? In this episode, I share the three areas that we focus on to ensure that we are at all times attracting, converting AND keeping our ideal clients. It’s a simple, yet powerful way to think about your business. Gonna talk right now about why that is a load of UMHUM in every case that I've ever seen? Craig Peterson here and here we go. Hey everybody. Thanks for joining me today. this is something that I don't know if I can ever repeat enough, but I want to take a little bit of a different angle on this than I have before. Most of us know that we're supposed to patch. What do we patch? What are we using? You might turn on automatic updates on windows. You might have those turned on MacOS, of course, on your iOS devices. Maybe you've got an Android device it's less than two years old and still gets updates so you have that turned on. Here's the problem. I have yet to walk into a business that doesn't say that they have just a phenomenal patch rate. You know, so for instance, you'll walk in there and you say, how good are you guys at keeping up on patches? Almost every last one of them says, yeah, almost a hundred. We're probably 99, 98% of the patches are up to date and we're just phenomenal. We're safe. Yeah, we're safe. don't worry about us. Yeah, we're safe. Don't worry about it. I've been in a couple of businesses and said that and then, they got nailed something awful and they were too embarrassed to call me back. When I talked to them later on, I found out what had really happened with them. Many people and many businesses are focused on that patch rate and that kind of makes sense. We have to make sure the patches are done, particularly the critical patches. But why is it that I go into a business and every business says, yeah, we're patched up. it might not be a hundred percent, but we're patched up. Every business says that. Yet I always find critical vulnerabilities when I poke around. When I do a scan. When we do these paid assessments to come up with an action plan for businesses. We scan their systems, which means their workstations, it also of course means there are servers and maybe other devices that are out there. I have never scanned a device that did not contain a critical vulnerability. Where's the disconnect? Why are businesses and people saying, yeah, we have this 99% patch rate? Yet I am continually finding major problems. It has to do with what's being patched. People are not patching the right thing. So let's look at a couple of different things here. First of all. When we're talking about workstations, desktops, laptops. Here are the four types of software that are attacked the most. Number one internet browser add-ins. How many of us have extensions on our browsers? Some of those extensions are in fact, malicious themselves. Internet browsers. Another big attack vector is operating systems. Of course, all of our office applications, all of our productivity stuff, software like I'm using right now for the radio show. All of this stuff gets attacked. But when we're talking about a 99% patch rate yeah. We're pretty much all patched up. What they're almost all always thinking about and talking about is patching the operating system and that's where things end. Now on the server-side, when we go into businesses, we're finding the webserver software, the database server, the operating systems on those servers, the remote server management stuff, like RDP, the active directory. Those are what is always being attacked. So why the disconnect? It's because it's difficult to patch everything. Microsoft, I already mentioned has the ability to automatically install updates. In fact, if you don't have the business versions, the enterprise versions of Windows, professional, you're forced to do updates. You don't even get to say when you want those updates to happen. If you're running iOS, on your iPhone, on your iPad, again, updates just happen automatically. But how about all of those apps? If you're getting those apps on your mobile devices, from the stores, like the Google play store or the Apple store, you were probably getting updates for your applications. If you're not getting them from there, you're probably not getting updates. So not patching the right thing is a very big deal. I wanted to talk right now about one specific thing that people are not patching. Frankly, that is our web server. You've got a website, right? If you're a business, any size business, you've got a website. You have to have a website. You have to get the message out. Now, of course, you can have some emails from other things too, but we're going to focus on one thing right now, the website. Hackers are actively exploiting right now, a vulnerability in a WordPress plugin. Now, I mentioned our browser plugins are the extensions for our browsers and how those can be hacked in many cases. It's another vector, obviously for the bad guys to get on to our computers and really start messing around. in this case, we're talking about WordPress web server, which is the number one most popular web server out there, WordPress and there are more than 700,000 active installations of this. We are using it for our own little websites for our families, We're using it for our businesses. We're using it for our associations or organizations. This particular file manager plugin, which extends features for WordPress allows bad guys to run command and malicious software things, like scripts whenever they want to. Now, how many people are keeping their WordPress installation up to date. Are you keeping your flash UpToDate? Are you keeping your other Adobe software up to date? How about all of the other software you're running on your computers? I look at this computer and it's just astounding how much software I have installed here on my Mac that I use all the time. So the attackers are using this exploit to upload files that have these shell scripts in them that are hidden in an image. Makes it even harder for you to find. So we have to be very careful. We don't know the impact of all of this yet. It's probably pretty bad. There are some companies that are blocking it. We block it as well, but we're talking about millions of exploit attempts. Over the course of the last couple of weeks, that is pretty bad. And we're only seen about half of the sites out there. The WordPress sites actually patched up. So make sure you do the update. You have to inventory everything you have. Everything your enterprise uses. What software do you have? What is it installed on? Is it up to date? Don't just Willy nilly, allow people to install software on their computers, and don't do it yourself either. Every time you install software, you open up another potential way for bad guys to get in. Its something else you have to track. It's something else you have to inventory. It's something else you have to update. You have to upgrade. People are just downloading stuff, Willy nilly. And remember what was the very first thing I said, that's attacked frequently internet browser, add-ins. That means internet browser add-ins means that those wonderful little bars that people install on their browsers are, yeah, those are malicious much of the time. At the very least, they are providing something called adware that's tracking, where you're going. Sometimes it replaces the ads on the website shows you stuff. It clicks through to these not clickbait sites, but click through to make them money on ads that they're running. It's bad. We can't do it now. I wish we had more time. All right. Welcome! Craig discusses Why Cybersecurity is important and a must-not-forget item for your Back to School preparations. Listen in to find out. For more tech tips, news, and updates visit - CraigPeterson.com --- Read More: iOS 13.7 launched today with a new system for battling the pandemic Hackers are exploiting a critical flaw affecting >350,000 WordPress sites The accidental notary: Apple approves notorious malware to run on Macs Most IoT Hardware Dangerously Easy to Crack 55% of Cybersquatted Domains are Malicious or Potentially Fraudulent Feds Can’t Ask Google for Every Phone in a 100-meter Radius, Court Says The Hidden Cost of Losing Security Talent Don’t forget Cybersecurity on Your Back-to-School List --- Automated Machine-Generated Transcript: Craig Peterson: [00:00:00] Hey, it's back to school time. We're going to talk about cybersecurity on the back to school list for parents, for children, and for school administrators. And then what do you do if your credentials have been exposed online? Hey everybody, Craig Peterson here. WGAN and online, of course, Craig peterson.com. You will find all kinds of great information there. We've got a new website, we've got a whole bunch of stuff coming up here. So keep an eye out for that. I think you're going to really like it. So let's get into cybersecurity. Now we're going back to school. Our kids are back at school. We're probably working from home, right now that's a majority of people in the United States that aren't in, manufacturing jobs or hands-on jobs. That is a very big deal and it means some potentially bad things as well. So what are those bad things potentially that I'm talking about? If we have computers in our homes and we have kids on those computers and those kids are going. Who knows where online, including to the school and a parent is at home. And that computer's on the same day network is a kid's computer. You're in trouble. I've talked many times before about how these hacks and hackers bread, when it comes to a company, how they spread in your home, and what they do is. Kind of think of it like the military, they get a beachhead. So they attack and they have now a footing inside the network and then they start spreading laterally. So if your kid's computer does not have the advanced malware protection on it, that it needs, if it's not configured properly, if that kid's installing software on it and that software gets out or is hacked or is a hack, to begin with. That computer can now be used to spread malware onto your computer. So whether you using a computer from the office at home, or maybe you are using your home computer. At home, the bad guys are now in your network and now start to spread within your network. Now think of that, multiplied out. Even further, kids are bringing computers into school. If you go into school one or two days a week. You probably never brought a computer into school before because the kids who were there five days a week. But now they're there one or two days a week and they bring the computer in so they can show the homework so they can get some assignments. Now things are spreading. Do you think that the Wuhan virus spreads like crazy? what do you think happens when a child or a teacher brings an infected computer into a school while it's going to spread like wildfire? And what do you think happens when you have an infected computer on your network at home? it's going to try and spread like wildfire and it probably can, if you're not doing all of the right things now, as I said in the last segment, I should probably do some more courses on this, but that's part of what we're aiming at here to really help you guys out. Yeah, that gets to be a problem. Doesn't it? It's spreading. So if it spreads onto the computer you're using from work, and let's say that you've made the mistake of using a VPN into the office and that's not properly firewalled at the office or on your computer. That mistake that VPN mistake could cost you dearly because now you are spreading that malware or you're allowing the hacker access by piggybacking on your computer, into the business. Now, I know that might sound complicated, but it is very easy to do. And the bad you guys have tools that they can buy for as little as 10 to $20 on the black market, it allowed them to do everything I just described very easily. So if you are a school administrator, You need cybersecurity. It drives me crazy. I was on a zoom call earlier in the week and the only thing they use is zoom. I had to explain to them, Hey, I have clients that are. DOD subcontractors. They sell stuff to military installations. They sell stuff that used by DOD contractors. Therefore, I can not use zoom because Zoom is not secure. The same thing's true when we're talking about using zoom in schools and in regular businesses. We cannot use it. Schools have seen an increase in these debilitating ransomware attacks, even with the FBI alert this summer about it going on. I remember the first time I was speaking at an insurance conference and I was up there. I was their keynote speaker and talking about the problems that we were seeing in business and in schools. With these ransomware attacks. And afterward, one of the attendees came up and told me about his entire school district had been hit with ransomware. What do you think's going to happen when somebody brings a laptop into school, or somebody brings that laptop from home into work or they're using VPNs. VPNs are providing a network, a path for that ransomware to spread and it spread to wherever it can. It'll spread onto your file servers, spreads high and low across everything. So be very careful. Okay. major problems with the remote desktop protocol. RDP from Microsoft, that I know a lot of you guys are using to connect to work, make sure it's patched up. Slap yourself on the back of the hand for using RDP, especially if it's exposed to the internet, the same thing with a VPN. So we're going to do training on this. I'm going to help you guys understand it. I don't want you to feel bad about this. Okay. Cause you just didn't know. The vendors are lying to you. Okay. you're using this stuff that you shouldn't be using because they're telling you should be using it. I was flabbergasted this week. I got an email from a security vendor that sells security hardware and software, and they said, the only thing you need is our one product. Which is not even close to being true. What do you do right? I can tell you what I do. I let you guys know about it. Okay. So we're going to be doing a lot of training on that starting next week. So I'll make sure you are on my newsletter list. Newsletter members are the ones that are going to be getting this information, and it's going to be short. You can read it and just a few minutes and it's going to be educational. Okay. Important stuff now. I'm going to talk about exposed credentials. What do you do if your username, your email, address your password, maybe some personally identifiable information? Is found out there on the internet. What do you do? We've got over 15 billion exposed credentials available online, for free? In most cases, the bank has don't have to pay for them. Did you little shadows conduct a study this year? And they found that nearly two-thirds of the credentials available on the dark and by the way, the open-source or the clear web markets duplicates and 80%, of them are in clear text format. Many of these are employee credentials that pose a significant risk to organizations because they are in the hands of cybercriminals. So the security team needs to assess all of the things, exposed employee credentials to help make sure that everything's taken care of. So what should you do? first of all, I want you to go to a website. I should just put this Craig Peterson so you can find it easily, but go to a website called have I been pwned? You've probably heard me say this before, but it's worth checking again. Check it frequently. Now have I been pwned dispelled, P W N E D. Have I been PW, D d.com. And you enter your email address and it'll tell you what it finds. So I used my Craig and mainstream.net email that I've had for 30 years now. And I, I know it's been exposed and you already know, I use different passwords on every website. In fact, I tend to use. Different email addresses and there are some tricks to that. And I'll do some training on that for you guys too. What can you do? How can you do it? But, there are some tricks so that you can really, I have one mailbox, but to have what looked to be millions, if you wanted them of different email addresses, which is very good. Have I been pwned has seen my mainstream.net email. It has been found on 12 breached webs sites and one paste. A paste by the way is a site where they just put all of this stuff together and upload it as one big file. Basically think of it a big zip file place. And so it lists through all of these. And I went through this a couple of weeks ago here on the air, but have I been poned.com? That's where I want you guys to go. Okay. So not all exposed usernames and passwords, present a threat. You have to look at them and figure out, okay, am I using that username? But it says on, have I been pwned as having in stolen? Am I using that anywhere else? Am I using that password anywhere else? Make sure that you have a password manager. I like one password. That's what we use. We also use something called Thycotic, but I also am really pretty happy now with the latest versions of LastPass. So look up LastPass as well. So use a password manager, always generate new passwords. let's see the same stolen leaked employee credentials. Keep on surfacing online. Have I been pwned is going to help you with some of that stuff. You got to get rid of all of that weed out. All of those duplicates, make sure the credentials are genuine and then go to those websites. Go ahead and change them. And use one password use last pass. It's very important to do all of that stuff. And then on an ongoing basis, make sure you monitor for stolen or elite credentials. So that means if you can go ahead and on, have I been pwned again, PWNED dot com on, notify me, put in your email address, it's going to send you a confirmation email. Once you've confirmed. It'll email you, anytime it find your email on any new hacks out on the dark web. All right, everybody, have a great weekend. Make sure that you are on my list. Cause we're starting this up this week, little kind of micro training, and we're going to do other pieces of training as well, but there's only one way to find out about it and that's to be on my newsletter list. Welcome! Craig discusses Why you need to try to keep your Cybersecurity Talent and what it can cost you if you lose them. There is Guy. There are Mary and a couple of other people. I can't remember everyone's names right now, but they are all listeners to the show and they have all changed careers. Here's what's going on. Hey, if you enjoy my show here on WGAN and online@craigpeterson.com, you might want to think about a career in cybersecurity. Now, there are a lot of people who have already started that whole career path, who can start pretty simply. And it's really one of these careers as Guy had told me that you feel like an imposter, right? Imposter syndrome. Runs rampant, particularly when you're first starting. I've been doing cybersecurity for many decades now. And I can tell you, I still feel like an imposter at times, so it's pretty normal, but there are a lot of jobs out there in the cybersecurity career path that is open right now. Everything from just starting out, just barely, Hey, I am a brand new guy, gal, and I want to do cybersecurity all the way on, up through CISOs, and all of that sort of stuff. So you might know already, my company is a managed security services provider. That's what we specialize in. We're not a company that goes out and tweaks your computer so that, a hard drive that's failing, just doesn't fail anymore. Although we do that for some of our customers. We emphasize and focus on cybersecurity. We're looking at some of these stats we're seeing anywhere from a half-familiar and open jobs in 2020 in cybersecurity, all the way on, up through one and a half million open jobs. And I've seen estimates as high as two and a half to 3 million people needed brand new people never been in cybersecurity before. Two and a half to 3 million new people here in the US that will be needed in cybersecurity by 2025. So a half a million right now, that ain't bad is it. Now I want to warn everybody that is in business and is looking for a cybersecurity person that you do need to have at least one person who is extremely well versed in cybersecurity and that means they've got to have a minimum of five years on the job, cybersecurity experience. The future of your enterprise is entirely dependent on them believe it or not. There are so many businesses that are being hacked one way or the other, and you cannot skimp on this. Can't skimp on it at all. I'm looking at it web page that just bothers me. This is a story here from the Freelance Star in Fredericksburg, Maryland, and this is September 7th, 2020. Stafford based cyber bytes foundation to offer a one-week cybersecurity certification course. Yeah. So if you live there in Maryland, back there by Joe Biden, wherever he lives now, and you want to be a cybersecurity professional, all you have to do is take this one-week certificate course and you too can be a cybersecurity expert, right? They're saying in this article that if considering a career in cybersecurity, you will be one week away from certification will prepare you for an entry-level position in the field. I've thought for a long time, I should be teaching some courses to people who want to really understand cybersecurity. Cause I can bet you anything that the poor people that are teaching this course are not true experts. I can also guarantee you that after having a whole week of experience in the classroom, you're not fit to do much in the cybersecurity business. You can probably turn on a computer and follow some basic instructions. That's it? I'm thinking about these people that are listeners to the show that have gone into cybersecurity. Most of them have done about six months didn't give or take in cybersecurity courses and they come out and really in six months of just intensive, all you're doing a cybersecurity training. You realize that you don't know enough. Okay. But at least they realize that after one week. I'm not sure people realize that they really don't know what they're doing. This is starting out here in two initial courses is gonna prepare you for the CompTIA security plus exam that tells you just how extensive that exam isn't. Of course, there's a cost just under a thousand dollars. They're approved and certified by the state council of higher education. It's just, wow. Wow, incredible. So I brought all of that up because. This article that I have up on my website and was in this week's newsletter is talking about the hidden costs of losing security talent. We've got to be careful as business people because we are losing talent. We're not respecting them. We're not paying them enough or we're giving them too much to do. Too many businesses look at cybersecurity as a cost center. They don't realize that it's not just a cost center. It's critical. It's essential for their business. And if they market correctly, frankly, It is a big plus on the marketing and sales side. How many of your competitors we're actually doing what they should be doing? So the cybersecurity talent is going to cost you money. You've got to provide them with the training you, my guys, my cybersecurity people spend about a third of their time, a third one-third of their time, not being productive, but actually attending courses, doing red team blue team exercises. Okay, this is not something you can really skimp on. In fact, you cannot do it yourself. I have seen the hard numbers. You cannot do cybersecurity as a business with less than about 500 employees. Can't do it adequately. You just can't. You can't get the right people. They don't have the right training. They can't afford to do what they need to do. Okay. So keep that in mind. Now you can have a managed security services company come in. Be careful, make sure they don't just have the one week certificate or the CompTIA security plus make sure they know what they're doing. But replacing an experienced security analyst where they're looking for an annual salary of a hundred thousand dollars, that's just salary plus load on top of that. And remember, 30% of the time, a third of the time they are going to be in class if they're doing things right. When they leave that company, it typically takes eight months to replace them and almost four months to train a replacement. So that's about a year. A full year of lost productivity. It's always possible that your company could lose a second person during that time as well. So be very careful, a bad hire. According to the US department of labor is going to cost at least 30% of the employees. First-year earnings for a security analyst, frankly, we're talking about costing you 50 to a hundred thousand. If you don't get hacked, in the interim. At which point you could lose the whole business. It's very big. It's a very big problem. So keep in mind everybody, when you're looking at this, first of all, I think it's a great career path. If you like a challenge. If you like things that are different. If you are not really big into just messing around but you really want to learn things and do things. Cybersecurity, I think is a great way to go, but it's continual learning. You've got to keep on top of this. It is more than a full-time job. All right. When we get back, we are going to hit a couple more articles from my newsletter week and, that's kinda it. I think this week's show. So you'll find me online, of course, Craig peterson.com. You're listening to me on WGAN. We'll be back on Wednesday morning. I am every Wednesday during drive time with Matt Gagnon. We have little fun with this, and we're going to be talking about cybersecurity on your back to school lists and tips for triaging risks. If your credentials are exposed, I'm going to give you a website that you have to go to see if your data has been stolen and leaked on the dark web. I'll give you that URL and a whole lot more when we get back. So stick around, we'll be right back. --- More stories and tech updates at: www.craigpeterson.com Don't miss an episode from Craig. Welcome! Craig discusses geofence warrants and why they are so popular with law enforcement investigators. Has the court seen enough? Listen in to find out. For more tech tips, news, and updates visit - CraigPeterson.com --- Read More: iOS 13.7 launched today with a new system for battling the pandemic Hackers are exploiting a critical flaw affecting >350,000 WordPress sites The accidental notary: Apple approves notorious malware to run on Macs Most IoT Hardware Dangerously Easy to Crack 55% of Cybersquatted Domains are Malicious or Potentially Fraudulent Feds Can’t Ask Google for Every Phone in a 100-meter Radius, Court Says The Hidden Cost of Losing Security Talent Don’t forget Cybersecurity on Your Back-to-School List --- Automated Machine-Generated Transcript: Craig Peterson: [00:00:00] Welcome back everybody. The fed had been out there using stingrays and other devices to watch where you're at. We're going to talk about that right now, and a new core ruling against the feds for some of the stuff they've been doing to spy. We're not just talking about spying on the bad guys. This isn't a FISA court thing. This is in fact, the feds taking the lazy way out. So think about you. If you were a police officer trying to investigate a crime, what's the easiest way for you to figure out who was in the area when a bank was robbed? Okay. I'm going to give you one second. What's the easiest way. it turns out that apparently the easiest way is to just send a letter to Google asking them for information about every phone within a 100-meter radius of where a suspected crime occurred. Now, isn't that an interesting thing, right? Isn't that an interesting way to do it? You might say, I've got an iPhone I don't have Google. So they're not going to be able to give that information to the fed. Do you have any Google apps on your phone that might be keeping track of your location? Things like, oh, I don't know. Google maps for instance. That could be a bit of a problem because federal courts in the Chicago area have now rejected government warrant applications three times. The government has applied for a warrant to force Google to produce a list of smartphones that were near a couple of places where the feds thought that crimes might have occurred, during the specified 45-minute intervals. Now, this recent ruling was handed down just last week and was recently made public and ARS Technica is talking about this. Now the numbers are frankly, striking here because these decisions really haven't significant impact. Google has reported. The growth in the law enforcement use of what are being called geo-fence searches. Are you familiar with geofencing? On your Android or your iPhone you can say, Hey, I'm on my to-do list here. I got a pickup toilet paper when I get near the grocery store because we all know there's no toilet paper in grocery stores. So when you drive by the grocery store, you can have a little, geofence set up on your phone that says, Hey, remember you got to get toilet paper. Then you can run to the grocery store, pick up your toilet paper, and be on your way. Geo-fencing when we're talking about these types of searches means a little bit different, but almost the same. That is Google gets or Apple gets a demand from the police, a warrant, that says, tell me about every phone that was within again, a hundred meters, 300 feet of this business of this area during this 45 minute period. Now, what we're seeing here is a 1500% increase in these types of warrants between 2017 and 2018. And then it jumped up again. Another 600%. percentages don't mean much unless you have the raw numbers. Let me give you the raw numbers. Google says that they received 180 geofence search requests a week. During 2019, that kinda adds up. At least I think it adds up. So let me see 180 a week. And let's just say there are 52 weeks in a year. Oh my gosh. That's almost 10,000 of these warrants that Google has to respond to every day. And if we say 180 a week and we divided by, Oh, I don't know. let's say the police work seven days a week. That means 25 warrants per day, almost 26 warrants per day. So that's a couple of full-time people just to respond to these. Of course, it also has to go over to the legal side and everything else. It gets to be a real problem. Google is a very popular target for these warns because almost everyone uses Google products in one way or another. Think of our cars, how many of our cars have Android in them? How many of them are using Google maps? How many of our cars have GPS on them? All of that is being tracked by Google. Yes, indeed. Android controls a majority of the smartphone market right now. As I mentioned earlier, even those of us who have I-phones might be using Gmail or Google maps. So this is going to be an ongoing problem. I think it needs to be solved at a bit of a higher level than just district courts in various States out there. now for years, the. Police have gone after the cell phone companies to ask where a phone was that the whole idea of a tower location. What will happen is, am I trying to triangulate you more frequently? However, all of the phone companies will have is just data that you were connected to this cell tower, which means you, it was probably the closest cell tower to you because that's the idea, right? You'll hop between the South towers, depending on which one is the strongest. This is a kind of a Dragnet approach. Something I do not approve of and many courts don't approve of just because it makes it easier for the police doesn't mean it's constitutional. In one case last year, Google was required to hand over information on almost 1500 users to federal investigators, working on a Wisconsin arson case. We've also seen. Cases where a guy was running his bicycle back and forth on this back street. Not like he was right in front of one house, but he got nailed because he was on that street at the wrong time. Although ultimately they figured out he had nothing to do with the crime, so they just turned his life upside down. So we'll see what happens. This Chicago case apparently is being, appealed, and if the appeal goes through, it could place new limits on these broad government data requests, which I think is ultimately a pretty good deal. By the way, what were they investigating? it turns out they're investigating a case where there were stolen pharmaceuticals, apparently sold on the black market and investigators believe that the bad guys stole the pharmaceuticals from this drug store or a clinic, and then traveled to another one to ship them to customers like a FedEx or ups stores. So to help them investigate, the suspect, the investigators asked Google for data about every smartphone that was near either this drug store or the medical clinic or FedEx or ups during a particular 45-minute window, one window, the first location, two windows on different days of the second. So the application was rejected. It was said to be too broad. The government narrowed its request too much narrower areas right around the buildings, but the courts rejected them all. The court said none of them complied with the Fourth Amendment's requirement that warrant particularly described the persons or things to be seized. Interesting. Very interesting. I know. What do you think about this? these all persons warrants are generally considered to be unconstitutional that's part of the reason we have the fourth amendment because the King was issuing these very vague big in the general warrant, the gave his military officers, governors and others, the ability to just go in and harass anybody they basically wanted to. So I tend to agree with the courts on this one. Sometimes, I disagree sometimes I agree, but then, in order to really justify this kind of a geo-fence search the government, according to this judge needs to show that everyone in the geofenced areas likely to be involved in the crime. So how does this work when we're talking about these domestic terrorists that are burning down, buildings, cars dragging people from cars, beating them. Are we going to see these types of cases, as well as the geofence? Ultimately we will see. But again, it's another reason. Not only do the bad guys have apps that are attracting you. And I talk about those a lot, but the good guys are too. And. They might just upturn your life for what turns out to be not particularly good reason and something that's probably against the fourth amendment. Alright. When we come back, we're going to talk about a business problem right now, and that has to do with it. Security person, now there's a huge shortage, but what's the cost. When you lose the security person, you're listening to Craig Peterson, WGAN. Stick around. Cause we'll be right back. --- More stories and tech updates at: www.craigpeterson.com Don't miss an episode from Craig. If you're like the rest of America, in fact, around the world, you may not be the best at either one of them. You know what the bad guys are taking advantage of that. Hey everybody. Craig Peterson here. Thanks for joining us today. I have had a busy week as we've been answering emails, getting the new website ready to go up and it's just been absolutely crazy. We've got more training coming out too. More training on the website and emails. We're going to be sending you these little two to three minutes to read emails. That'll keep you up to date on things. The number one thing that I hear comments on listeners is they really appreciate the little bit of learning that they get from the radio show and my appearances on the radio and everything else on with Matt in the morning on, of course, Wednesday mornings about seven 30, but that seems to be the number one thing and including the email. I'm going to do more of it. You asked for it, you're going to get it. We're going to do more of all of that. The training, keeping it simple, helping you out. We'll be doing some, some webinars stuff. Just all the way across the board. Yeah. Because we have some serious problems out there and it's getting worse and worse. And I don't see it getting any better. We just got news of another hack that happened. and it happened over on the Biden campaign. Man alive. It wasn't a hack-hack. What's a hack, I don't know. It's hard to say what a hack is nowadays because frankly, I count ransomware as a hack. It's something that somebody did that they weren't supposed to do, that they shouldn't have done, et cetera. That's a hack and that's what just happened to the Biden campaign. Apparently the Kremlin hit about 200 political targets, including a key Biden campaign Alie. Apparently this hacking attempt was caught by Microsoft. Most of them are not, and they were able to gather some information about hackers. Microsoft was able to link them to the Kremlin as the most likely suspect. And they were able to take all of that evidence and give it over to the FBI. So good for them. We had that happened last time too, remember Hillary Clinton's campaign. It happened exactly the same way for years later, Democrats again, the same way. Remember that whole thing, the DNC emails now turns out it was probably the Russian hackers that managed to get them and leaked all of those emails online ahead of the 2016 presidential election. They really want to shake things up. Obviously they don't want Trump. Trump's been very hard on them, harder than president Biden. Would be certainly harder than President Obama ever was. Trump's been very hard in Russia and very hard on China. They just want to really stir things up in a very big way. They apparently the Russians attempted to breach the systems at this Washington based strategy and communications firm called S K D K or S K D Knickerbocker whose been working for very hand in glove with Joe Biden's campaign, according to the daily beast. These attacks took place over the past two months. Ultimately they were unsuccessful. So that's really good news here. So maybe they did learn something from the last hack. This is the same method that was used back in 2016 to gain access to a very high, official, if you will, within the Hillary Clinton campaign. So here we go. Apparently this firm is "well defended." So there's been no breach. We'll see how that happens. We just had an instance this week. In fact, a company that we helped out a little bit, we moved them from just regular consumer network gear. We moved them up to some semi-professional network gear for their small business and it looks like they might actually have some contacts with the department of defense. And DOD is very particular about your security. I hope the Biden campaign is too. Cause this wasn't directly against the Biden campaign. This was against a consulting firm that they were working with. I want to remind everybody. These types of hacks for lack of a better term are typically phishing events. They'll send an email that looks legitimate and is a very simple plea asking for some information. In the April or March timeframes, actually, we usually see that email is going around talking about, Oh, and the W2 information, 10 99 information and pretending to be the CFO or the accountant, et cetera. Now, this isn't the first time Microsoft has sorted the suspected Russian government hacking, and we've thrown to them many times for our clients as well, including in emails. Apparently, that's what this was. This was an email. This was a phishing email designed to try and get somebody to click on a link or answer a question. Microsoft's saying they've identified over 120 new targets of the Kremlin's cyber spying. They have found them out apparently by suing the notorious hacker group known as Fancy bear. That's the group over there in Russia that is run out of the Kremlin. Microsoft's saying their legal actions led to the seizure of 70 command and control servers. Now, this is where I talked again on my show here a few weeks ago. This is where your home computer comes in. This is where your small business computer or even your large business computer comes in. And that is they will compromise it. They will install some software on it that allows them to remotely control it and then use your computer to send out these phishing emails, to send out emails that have attached to them either directly or indirectly, ransomware, et cetera. We just had a big ransomware thing just this week as well. I don't know if you heard about this one. But my gosh it's just happened, but again and again, this particular one. Hit this massive a company called Equinix, I should say. Equinix runs all kinds of data centers for businesses. Now it's saying that this ransomware hit their internal systems and what it did is exactly what I've been warning you guys about. It doesn't just take a hold of your computer and encrypt all of the data. no. What this did is it grabbed the data. It could get its hands on Equinix's internal computers and sent it up to the bad guy's computer. So they now had copies of some or all of their data. And then it does the encryption trick. Now Equinix is saying that their data is centers and service offerings, including their managed services, are fully operational. Now knock on wood. My company has never had this happen to us. but again, we're smaller. We use much better software than most companies out there. We don't have all of the details on this, but this is a very big deal. Equinix is publicly-traded. The company traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange. It has around 8,000 employees. It just bought 13 more data centers. This is really something. And by the way, bought them for $750 million, three-quarters of a billion. So this is a big company and it happens to them. It can happen to you. I started all of this out by asking if you were a good speller and how good a typer you are? There's another way the bad guys get to you. We've been talking right now about phishing and phishing sites. We were talking about how phishing is being used to get you to go to a website. oftentimes that URL that you're going to will look almost legitimate. It might be instead of microsoft.com, it might be Microsoft dot something else, or it might be a misspelling or a common typo for the URL for that website that you're trying to go to. Apple, PayPal, banks are being targeted by cyber squatters. Now they're taking advantage of the pandemic according to a study that just came out. In a single month, cybersquatters have registered almost 14,000 domain names. More than half of them went on to host malicious software. That is a very big deal. That's according to Palo Alto networks, and that is being quoted in Dark Reading. But what these cybersquatters are up to is that they put up a website that has a URL that's very similar to a legitimate URL out there. When you go there, they are going to try and trick you into doing something. Now, the study says that basically 55% of these Cybersquatter domains are malicious or potentially fraudulent. So it's not like somebody buying a domain saying, I'm going to, I'm going to buy it, Apple tart, because people type that in by accident when they're trying to go to Apple and maybe I can get Apple to buy it from me, or maybe I can use it as a parody site, et cetera. No. they are leading to malicious content more than 70% of the time. So be very careful about the brand. A good example that they've done that has been shut down recently is secure dash Wells Fargo. This is a domain using the Wells Fargo brand, targeting the bank's customers and getting them to click through and use phishing to steal sensitive information. Be very careful when you're out there typing things in or clicking on links, because many of them, it turns out 50-55% of them are malicious and 70% of them are trying to fake you into giving up your own personal information. Hey coming back. We've got a very interesting little article by Timothy Lee here in ARS Technica about a court order against the feds and local police departments. So we'll tell you about that. When we get back. Stick around, you're listening to Craig Peterson right here on WGAN and Wednesday mornings at seven 30 with Matt. --- More stories and tech updates at: www.craigpeterson.com Don't miss an episode from Craig. And man is that true according to this new study we're going to talk about right now when it comes to these wonderful little appliances we have. Hello everybody. Craig Peterson here. Thanks for joining me. I enjoy being here on the radio answering questions. I got a lot this week. I got dozens of them, so that's wonderful. Keep them coming in. I pick the best ones for what we call our newsletter. That typically goes out Saturday mornings. Again, it depends on what our weeks are like. Getting those out and I try and answer them there. That's part of what we're going to be doing. Midweek starting next week. We're going to be sending out these little emails, a long tail thing, explaining a specific topic. Something you can read and just a few minutes and get something out of. We want it really to be transformational. If you can do that in three minutes. We have been transforming our lives in a lot of ways. Many ways of us, of course, have been using computers for decades now. We've been using these smart devices for at least a decade. Before I had my first Android smartphone and my first iPhone, I had the Palm pilot phones and just what I could do with my Palm. It was just absolutely amazing. Do you remember handspring and some of these other guys there are just so many wonderful things we could do with them that the Apple Newton, which never really hit it off, it was very expensive? All of these devices were designed to make our lives a little bit easier and they all required a lot of intelligence. Now we have devices pretty much everywhere. I was going to say, come out of our ears, but that's true too. When it comes to hearing AIDS, these extremely small devices that have embedded computers, a whole computer system. Now when you're trying to manufacturer something like a light bulb that has smarts in it, it might be smart to be able to change colors. It might be smart to get on a network and accept a remote control code. It might be some smarts that are just designed to make the whole house easier. you turn on. A movie and automatically the lights in the room. Dim, the surround sound turns on. Just everything happens for you automatically. These are all being done with these various small, hopefully, easy to use and install devices. But the problem that we've been noticing is that, wow, wait a minute. Now, none of these devices were really designed with security in mind, and in order to keep the costs down, they have to really strip those operating systems bare. So there are versions of Linux, many of them now that are just very stripped down. The same thing's true with BSD Unixes or units are used in a lot of this internet of things, devices, and the idea is to get it small, get it simple. So that we don't have to provide them with a big computer or a bunch of computing power. We can just do it simply. Get that information together, put it out there for the people to use. So what's that information as I said, it can be almost anything. It's about the internet of things. Now, because they have cost reduced all of these devices all the way to just out saving a fraction of a penny on each board. Remember they're making these things by the tens of thousands and ultimately by the millions and billions at least that's the plan, that's what five G is been designed to help handle. They have a whole problem when it comes to what we in the industry might call root-level access. We've got a security researcher out there who presented over at the Octas virtual disclosure security conference last week that most of this internet of things hardware is dangerously easy to crack and completely take control of. Then they use it for malicious purposes. The federal government has really cracked down now on anybody that's not just a direct contractor with them, but a subcontractor. We're seeing this all of the time. We're helping businesses. These enterprises that are making things, everything from a cable harness through power supplies, through control systems and control circuits. That now as of mid-August, this year, have to get rid of everything that's in their buildings that do not meet these new CMMC and other standards. So things like the security cameras that you might have right there. Weren't they real cheap, like the Hikvision stuff, right? Heck, you could just go to any big-box retailer and buyHikvision. Hikvision is illegal to have in the building. You used to be able to separate the network. So you could say, yeah, my Hikvision security cameras on a different network than my Chinese made telephone voice over IP system, which is on a different network than my computer systems. You can't do that anymore. It has to all be gone. Why? It's because none of those systems meet the minimum security requirements. If we go into a place that is just, for instance, we just picked up another client that's a pizza shop. They're doing really well because of the COVID thing, because people are ordering pizzas, they are being delivered to people's homes and they're just raking in the dough and they were having some problems. So they had us come in. What was the problem? In their case, they found out that they were about to be audited by our PCI friends. PCI, that's the payment card industry folks. So if you accept credit cards, you now have PCI obligations. What are those obligations or what do you do? How do you deal with those in their case? It turned out okay. That for whatever reason, their credit cards had been stolen, the credit card information. It could have been a skimmer. We walked into and did a security audit on this chain of restaurants. Pretty big chain here in my home state. We had to poke around. I could not believe it, they had for all of the waitstaff, Android tablets. The Android tablets were all in developer mode, full access to everything on the tablet, including the card reader, that PCI non-compliant card reader. It's great for the servers because they come up, they take the order on this Android tablet, and then at the end of the meal, they just swipe the card in the side of the tablet. Wow. Isn't this just wonderful? Because of the way the software was being run and being used, anything malicious could be installed on that unit that was being carried around by the wait staff. All the wait staff had to do was put something on there that just the read the credit card numbers as they were being scanned or copied all the information from the transactions and TaDa they now have money in their pocket that happened here in my home state again and it's happening in yours. Believe me, Wendy's is where this one was and they ended up having people go to jail over that one. This pizza shop. We went in there, they had credit cards, apparently stolen, and that's why they were getting a PCI audit. They brought us in a week before the audit was supposed to happen. We had a look and yes, indeed their equipment had been compromised. It's like I say, all of the time. We never have gone into a business and found that their security is up to date. Every machine we've looked at has had severe security problems and in every case where we've gone in and it's a government subcontractor of some sort. Every case we have found Chinese back doors and other, very malicious software on it. What does that mean to you a regular, a home person, right? Home user. What does it mean to you as an enterprise business, an organization, tax-free whatever you might be? It means that this internet of things, hardware, whether it's things like the Hikvision cameras that can't be used anymore, legally anyways, for DOD subcontractors on any network on any piece of equipment or our voiceover IP phones that are being hacked or the pizza shop whose POS system had been hacked. What are you doing? It's across the board for everybody? So Mark Rogers is this white-hat hacker who presented at the Okta virtual disclosure security conference. He was saying that these devices were hooking up to our networks have weak to no protections at all against attacks. Against the firmware on the devices against the software that's running on the devices, et cetera. He claimed he's able to gain complete route access, route level access means that he can do anything he wants on the machines, including the ability to reflash firmware. In other words, put his own software on the device on 1,012 devices that he's tested. And going back to this chain restaurant that we tried to help out and they decided no we're all set. Na-Na right fingers in the ears. We could have easily and so could their waitstaff have completely hacked any of these devices. None of them, none of it was probably protected. It's just shocking to me. It is shocking to me just continually. The issue with all of these systems, and this is true of almost every internet of thing device out there is that most of the proprietary information about the devices, including their certificates or keys, the communication program or protocols it's stored in poorly secured flash memory. You think of your flash memory like a hard disc drive, but there are no moving parts in it. Anyone with access to these devices, anybody with some basic knowledge of hardware hacking, even basic software hacking can access the firmware, look for data, including vulnerabilities. We've seen that happen before where security cameras are being used to launch attacks against the rest of the business and it includes DOD contractors, and it includes restaurants. We're seeing that every week. Be very careful. I'm not getting into the details of how they're using Uart and J tag routes to get into them. But. This is a real problem, everybody. So again, be careful the best stuff out there right now when it comes to the internet of things to smart devices, to these speakers that you can talk to is now, I'm going to sound like a broken record, but it's Apple. The Apple devices, the Apple speakers, all of that stuff tends to be more expensive, but it is well engineered and they do seriously consider security as part of all of this. Well, there's going to be a lot more, go online, and stick around. You're listening to Craig Peterson here and WTAG we'll be back. When it comes to our apps. What's Apple doing what's Google doing and how did Apple mess this is up so badly, frankly. Hey, you're listening to Craig Peterson. Thanks for joining me today. We've had a problem for a very long time when it comes to any sort of apps. I saw a funny meme about yeah about Bill Gates this week. It said Bill Gates couldn't even stop viruses and Windows. It's a really good point that Windows was never designed to be secure at all. When they came out with NT, that was their first attempt to design it like a real operating system. They took the design of VMS, basically of Dave Cutler and company that had been designed over a DEC - digital equipment. And they said, Hey, we'll use this as a framework. This really works. It's not a hack. Let's just make this work. Then, of course, Microsoft had his fingers on it. So they really messed it up. They wanted to be compatible with everything that they could possibly be compatible with in the past. In the past, Microsoft did not have the barriers walls. If you will between the apps between the operating system, between the hardware and the apps. They didn't have the appropriate protections in place. Programmers used some lazy mechanisms to get around the operating system, going directly to things like graphics cards, because the operating system just slowed it down and they couldn't do the graphics they wanted to do that way. So it's been a real problem, frankly. It's been a real problem for a long time in the windows world, and NT was supposed to fix some of that. It did initially, and then it didn't. Now they're trying to tighten up this whole thing. how do you, if you're Microsoft or Google or Apple, how do you protect the people who are using your products from some of this malicious software? What's the way to do it? What Apple has come up with is a mechanism and Google as well that signs the software. You might have noticed that if you are trying to install software on your computer or your Google device from a third party website, it will come up and say, can't be opened, It can't be installed. There are a few different messages that come up. In the case of Apple now, with MacOS Catalina, which is the latest Operating system. Although, there's another one that is about to hit and it looks like they're going to change the whole nomenclature to, with the next release, but in Catalina, Apple now requires what they call notarization for all apps. Any apps that you are installing on that computer need to be signed digitally by Apple. So the developer, when they write the software, they compile it, they sign it themselves. It's a whole public key cryptography thing. Apple takes that software and checks it and then signs it. Both Google and Apple are using automated systems that try to verify whether or not the software is malicious. So it'll go through this automated system and will try and figure out well, is there any malicious content? Are they doing things they shouldn't be doing? Are they making suspicious calls to the operating system? Is it trying to get into files that it shouldn't be getting into? Now, there are ways to hide things from these automated systems. In fact, obfuscation seems to be the norm when it comes to any program or programming anything. It's just absolutely amazing. It does look for code signing issues and then it's designed to return the results to the developer very quickly and say, okay, it's all set. It is signed. You are ready to go. Then they can put it up for sale on the app store or available for free, et cetera. The same trick over on the Google side. In this case, in the Google side, they've got this alphabet owned malware scanning service called virus total that looks at data from over 60 different antivirus providers to figure out, is this software malicious? Is it using any sort of malicious libraries or routines? Now we have seen that happen, unfortunately, and it's scary because we have now found that even in the Apple app store, there have been many apps that included this library that was designed to basically steal personal information from you. Developers would use this library and it wasn't flagged by this notarization process. Now you install it and it's not the main feature of the app, but the app is spying on you. Now, there is a new piece of software out there that they're actually not all that new. It's been around for quite a while. It's called S H L E Y E R Schleyer and it is a Trojan that has been one of the most prolific pieces of Mac malware now for the last couple of years and it was notarized by Apple. Now, this is interesting, right? This whole notarization thing it's been in the last couple of major releases, but it snuck by. There is if you're an Apple user, there is a piece of software there's you can put on your Mac called brew and it uses open-source software to install all kinds of features. I use many of these pieces of open-source software all of the time. And they provide functionality that does not come with the base Mac operating system. And so in the case of brew, It is verified and validated by the brew people, right? Apple has nothing to do with this. There is another site out there called a homebrew.sh, which is a knockoff of the brew site, which is brew.sh. And the number of people were tricked into using that site, this homebrew.sh, and it apparently had fake flash updates. So it pops up and it says, Hey, you need to update. And we've all seen that before if we have flash on our computer. you click on it and open it and install it. In fact, this Schleyer was slash is so smart. It gives you instructions on how to get around Apple's notarization checks. So in case you didn't know if you install an app on your Mac and you, first of all, you probably can't get it to install, but if you do get it to install or if you download it and you try and run it out of your downloads. If you right-click on it, you then have the option to just open it and get around the signatures from Apple. Not good, not a good thing. So this, bottom line means that you cannot 100% trust these signed apps from Apple or from Google. Just, this is just to remember. Okay. This isn't something that any of these companies messed up recently. It's just normal. So be very careful. About what you install and it goes right back to something. I said a little earlier today, which is, do not install any software you do not absolutely need and make sure that you keep it all up to date. Some of this stuff does clickJacking. It tricks users into installing these cryptographic certificates. It decrypts and reads all of your HTTPS traffic. So if you're going to a secure server that is using SSL, it's decrypting it. It's harvesting your user IDs, everything. Okay. Apples goof, in this case, and they fixed it very quickly. It was reported to Apple. Apple did not figure this particular one out by themselves. So that goes right back to how important it is to have third parties out there that are looking at security, not just for Apple, but for many other pieces of software. All right, stick around. When we come back, we're going to talk about a new little study that was done about the internet of things hardware. Make sure you get all of this and more. Of course, this is Craig Peterson and as usual, we've got a lot of technology to talk about and some security stuff as well. So here we go. Emily: [00:00:19] And now, here's Craig Craig Peterson: [00:00:21] Hopefully you were able to join me earlier this week as I was on during drive time talking about many of these issues. We usually only get to talk about two or three, and you've probably seen in your newsletter email this morning, that most weeks we have, I don't know eight. To 12 different topics that I think are really important. So we get to a bunch of those today on the radio show. And of course, in my email, in that newsletter, I've been adding an Ask Craig's section. You probably noticed that and these are some questions that people have asked me directly in response to the newsletter, or just like you guys can email me@craigpeterson.com anytime. And I figured those are the things everybody really wants me to spend a little time on. So that's exactly what I do. You'll get those of course during the week. Right now we're going to be talking about this new iOS version. In fact, it might even talk about the one after that because that's been hitting the news due to some critical flaws. If you have a website and it is that time for elections and businesses to try and grow. If you're a candidate or a business, or you are running a website for the local soccer club a year are gonna want to hear this about WordPress. And, we've got a really sad little story here about a mistake Apple made, but they cleaned up after themselves. So that's a little bit about what's going on today. We've got more of that as well as we go forward. So let's start with the whole iOS 13.7. Those of us who've been using iOS for a while. We all know that we do get updates, right? That's one of the real advantages to the Apple ecosystem over some of these others out there, particularly the Android. I know I can hear you guys now. Phew. Phew. In particular, Android, I use Android. In fact, I was chatting with a friend of mine. Who became a friend because he was a customer first. He was the chief technology officer for the state of New Hampshire. And I had done a whole bunch of stuff for the state over the years and had set up the nh.gov domain and all of the communications and everything. It was interesting cause I hadn't talked to him and. The better part of a decade, maybe even more. and he said, so what kind of phone do you have? He says you gotta have an Android. And I said, no, I don't. Because he knows, I like to tinker with technology. And if you're a tinkerer, Oh, that's where the Android comes in handy. But the biggest problem with Android, and the main reason I don't have one, are you just don't get the updates. You don't have the stability that you have in Apple Ecosystem for your Apple, your iOS devices, your iPhone. Apple launched a new version of iOS here a little over a week ago. It was called 13.7. It adds a few different features, but one of the ones that really surprised everybody was something called notifications express. Now, remember we talked a few months ago about Apple and Google getting together and they came up with a methodology that could be used in order to track people that come in contact with each other. The idea behind it was, Hey, listen, we want to be able to let people know if they've come in contact with somebody that had COVID-19 symptoms. You know the contact tracing stuff that you talking about now. Whether or not COVID-19 is, the killer that they want everybody to believe, or maybe something else is going on. That's not the topic I'm going to get into right now. But what this does allow you to do is tie in for some of the contact tracing apps. You may be familiar with Sturgis and the big motorcycle rally. They hold out there every year, even this year. The complaints now that they're a quarter-million new cases, actually it was a little higher than that of COVID-19 have been spread. It's going to be a super spreader. There's no hard evidence of that I've seen and I've read quite a few articles on it. No definitive studies, certainly at least not yet. What does this all mean? It means if someone gets sick, they're going to have to track it down. We've seen that happen in Europe, a lot. Look at New Zealand, for instance, they had a major outbreak. One person had COVID-19 symptoms and then apparently spread it to 13 others. There's another one just here in Maine that happened a few weeks back. Apparently these people had attended a wedding and then spread the COVID-19. There's a number of deaths associated with that. The deaths were people that weren't even at the event, but who got it from people who had been at the event and passed it all along. Well, this is a new rollout from Apple second phase, we had software updates in may that included this application, programming interfaces, API to help public health authorities to develop their apps for their own use, for this purpose. We've had some countries that have already used that some in Eastern Europe, down in again, New Zealand they've been trying to track people that are part of this group that started this spread again. In fact, they locked down the whole country. Again, I'm not going to get into today. Oh, that's for another show. With the second phase, now, the authorities can get high tech exposure tracking without developing their own apps. So phase one, Apple added the API. So people well could write apps. Some third parties did write some apps. Now they can do that the tracking without the API, Google has, this is not released in an Android software update yet. It does have its own version of exposure notifications express and later this month, Android six or later, devices are supposed to be able to get that update. Again, the problem with Android, most devices will never have that update available to them. In this case, just like with Apple's solution, they're going to be able to get these notifications letting them know, they may have been exposed. This is built right into the operating system in the Apple iOS version, but in the Google world, Android users are to have to download an app. We'll see what happens, ultimately here, users who are in participating states are prompted there. They are said, Hey, listen, do you want to receive notifications? If the contact tracing app, if this app indicates that they may have been exposed and then the users advise on the next steps to take. That has to do with the user's local public health authority. So far, we've got Maryland, Nevada, Virginia, and the district of Columbia participating in what's called the exposure notifications express system. Yeah. More expected to come later. There are states such as, again, Virginia, North Dakota. I am my Hill mean Alabama, Arizona, Nevada, who all came up with their own apps or bought apps from third parties using this API. We've got 20 countries that already have exposure tracking apps that they're using. And we'll see what happens. We'll see what happens here. At least you're given the option. It's not like in China where you don't have the option. You have to carry your smartphone and that smartphone does track you and does track your contacts. We'll see. Ipads by the way, are not included in that. Now I mentioned at the beginning of this. Something about the next major version of iOS 14 and there is a whole lot of controversy about it. Apple has said that they're going to push it out a little bit. We'll see how far out that'll be. They're supposed to have a conference that has come in week one of their big Apple meetings, or they're going to announce all the new stuff. We'll see what iOS 14 has in it. Remember Apple does not make money off of selling information about you, does not sell your data the exact opposite of what Google does, right? Google, the people who gave us Android. So Apple doesn't sell our data. Google is in the business of selling our data as quickly and as much of it as they possibly can. Another reason not to use Android. In this case now, with iOS 14, Apple is locking down your privacy even further and companies that are like Facebook, that also are in the business of selling your data are rather upset because what is going to happen with iOS 14, as it exists right now is they are going to totally squash the ability for these guys to track you. That to me seems like a pretty big deal. We'll see you ultimately, what ends up happening? 13.7, by the way, this really, yeah, just came out is probably the last update before 14 comes out. But who knows? There've been so many complaints from companies that are in the business of collecting and selling your data. It might still be a little while before that happens. I want to give you guys a little tip, here again, I give this out and I should make this it's an every week sort of thing. I'll probably mention it again during the show today, but make sure you go to have I been poned.com. How have I been PWNED dot com there are features for businesses as well, but. You go there, you put in your email address, and just like I explained last week, it will tell you where on the dark web it finds your email address. It'll tell you about the breaches that your email address might've been found in and also what data was stolen as part of that breach so that you know, and then really, I want everyone to remember. It's a dangerous world out there. And it's way more dangerous now that we have so many people working from home. I've got another one. We'll talk about a little bit later here called jigsaw. But when we get back, we're going to talk about a different kind of patch. I bet one, you may not have heard before, and if you're a business, you've got to make sure that you stick around because we'll be right back. --- More stories and tech updates at: www.craigpeterson.com Don't miss an episode from Craig. Healing and Harmony: Saturn has Your Back
This week we spoke with Erica Rose, who originally appeared on The Bachelor Season 9 (Lorenzo Borghese’s season set in Rome) and went on to appear in Bachelor Pad Season 2 and Season 3. Erica was, unfortunately, a target in a REALLY messed up game on Bachelor Pad Season 2 called “Target on Your Back”. We discuss the incident and talk about what the show can do to help contestants with their mental health. Then, since Erica is a Crime & Roses Cutie like us, we talk about her family law practice, true crime and some ghosty whosties. Danielle then tells the story of Betty Broderick who had a SUPER messy divorce and then killed her husband and his new wife. (Story starts at 57:56). Megan shares some True Crime News (check it out at 46:43): a member of the Manson Family is up for parole (Leslie Van Houten), a Nazi concentration camp guard was convicted of over 5,200 crimes related to his time at the Stutthof concentration camp, murder charges have been filed in a 34-year-old cold case in Oklahoma, and Derek Chauvin (and his wife) are facing some new charges-- these are unrelated to the death of George Floyd. Just a reminder, Chauvin has been charged with the second-degree murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. You can check out the pod-cert we’re involved in at the Killin’ Missin’ Hidden Podcast here! Deciding she didn't want to be tired to one revenue stream or one company, she decided to really explore curiosity. From here she started two small businesses, a corporate health coach and a plant-based chef). During the last couple of years that she was in the insurance industry Deanna set out to dive into creativity, learn from like-minded women who were exploring their curiosity and taking action. This led her to begin her podcast, Lean Into Curiosity Podcast. Second Phase After a year of podcasting, Deanna has learned and taken imperfect messy action to create a business around discovering values and applying them to both your personal life and business. Every business has a set of core values and those values came from a person, a leader within the organization. Values Deanna believes your intuition is following your values. You are making decisions based on your values, but you just might not realize it yet. It isn't until you hone in on the feelings of those values that you identify what's holding you back, what's making you not feel good about a certain area of your life, but you first have to determine what's important, why it's important and how you can apply it to your life. Start with applying values to little decisions in your life. This will filter into the major, life changing decisions you have to make. As you change, reevaluate your values and what's driving you to make decisions. Identifying Your Values Listen to Episode 2 of Lean Into Curiosity Podcast. Just the Shirt on Your Back by PVUMC CT
Not Just a Chiropractor for Stamford, Darien, Norwalk and New Canaan
The benefits of chiropractic care include pain relief, tissue healing, and good function. You will notice a better quality of sleep and have less downtime when you exert yourself. Your treatment may require different amounts of time to achieve each of these goals. Pain relief doesn't mean tissues have healed nor that function is restoredIt often takes more time for tissues to fully heal than for pain relief. It may take more time to restore function that it takes for tissues to heal. The program works if you follow it.Positively Must Restore Back Function - Fundamental Goal of Chiropractic CareFunction means the ability to perform every day and work activities. If your goal is only to get out of pain I am afraid you are wasting your time by coming to us. Sure we will get you out of pain but our unique back program goes much deeper. You need to be able to function without having pain. Function includes range of motion, flexibility, stability, strength, and coordination. Improving function the key to long term pain relief. Failure to restore function means any pain relief is temporary and increases the risk of chronic pain. Joints that have good function are not painful, perform better, and are less likely to be injured or degenerate. Decreased function can lead to injury and pain. Chiropractic adjustments helps minimize pain and maximize function by the use of adjustments, physical therapy exercise, and other methods.Chiropractic Care Restores Your Backs IntegrityThe purpose of care is to restore and maintain the health of the whole person and not just treat isolated symptoms or diseases. Your Back is complex, and everyone's back pain issues are different. The Back Pain Project personalizes care to help create the potential for well being and improve the quality of life, rather than just focusing on illness. The Back Pain Project is aimed at restoring and maintaining normal structure, joint, muscle, and nervous system, function. Does your chiropractor or physical therapist accomplish all this? If so continue using them! What treatments you can expect from The Back Pain ProgramCHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS are integral to the success of The Back PainProjectChiropractors use controlled forces, called adjustments when there are restrictions around joints that the body is unable to overcome itself. We use a special method called Applied Kinesiology to identify where there are restricted joints. Such barriers include muscle spasm, swelling (edema), scar tissue, and pain. The Back Pain Project examination identifies restricted joints whether they are painful or not. Chiropractic Adjustments specifically applied to joints can restore motion when the body's own muscles can not. Adjustments help relieve pain, as well as, restore and maintain normal movement, biomechanics, and function. The controlled force of adjustments safely generates the energy needed to overcome such restrictions and take a joint back to its normal, full range of motion.Chiropractors carefully monitor pain, tissue healing, and function using specific outcome measures to know when a patient has achieved maximum benefit and it is time to end care or shift to a prevention/wellness program.

Episode 14: “We’re taught that if we do things a certain way, it makes us successful…but does it really make you successful in who you truly are? Because life is messy, it’s not perfect.” Carolyn Brunson has a background in sports management + wellness and was in the middle of getting her PhD in Higher Ed when she left to take care of her mother who was suddenly diagnosed with terminal cancer. And just a few years later, Carolyn herself became gravely ill with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). She went from fit and healthy to being paralyzed, on life support, and unable to see or speak. At one point, she had to be revived after going into respiratory failure. In this bonus episode of Asians Redefining Their Success, we talk about how Carolyn was able to rehab herself with a faith over fear mindset, how she was able to bounce back as a freelancer after her career was thrown off into a nonlinear path, and strategies she used to not give up on hope despite losing so much. We also talk about how to take care of our feelings of anxiety, her #1 tip for stress management and best practices to start a meditation practice (we get all scientific about this if you’ve been on the fence about meditating :). In Hour 1 it's singer, songwriter and producer Nick Hakim, who grew up in a household overflowing with musical diversity and cites influences ranging from Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, to Madlib and MF Doom, to South American folk and DC punk. He independently built a following through the release of his critically acclaimed self-released EPs Where Will We Go, Pt. 1 and Where Will We Go, Pt 2. May 2017 marked the release of his debut full-length album, 'Green Twins', which featured contributions from Jesse & Forever and the Onyx Collective and was an experimental step forward with emotional heft gleaned from experiences in the years since the first EPs. He had this to say about his mix; "These are songs that I love right now.. I appreciate you taking the time to listen. With all this madness happening around us, listening to music is where I always find solitude and peace. Have a nice day and enjoy. Be safe out here" In Hour 2 we hand over to Astronautica, a singer/songwriter and electronic producer whose music captures the eclectic nature of Los Angeles’ experimental beat scene and its connections to different cultures around the globe. She was drawn into the L.A.’s underground musical community swirling around Low End Theory, and quickly became addicted to the burgeoning beat sounds of the West Coast. She has been signed to Alpha Pup Records for the last five years, and has launched a slew of widely acclaimed releases with the label. Her latest album is Death Valley, which she wrote and recorded over the last three years at her home studio in Los Angeles. She told us; "This is a collection of songs that I'm currently listening to, songs that have been an inspiration in some of my past works, and my latest tracks off of my most recent LP, 'Death Valley.' Living in LA, I spend a lot of time in my car driving through many streets and neighborhoods, my favorite is when I'm driving late at night after all the traffics subsided listening to music with the windows down, I made this mix to evoke that feeling." In this episode, Spike and Jessica catch up on what they’ve been doing to relax in the final days of summer and had a discussion about how we welcome kids back to school. As we’re seeing awesome back to school ideas, like rolling out the red carpet (Click here for the time RM Bacon literally rolled out the red carpet forthe welcome back and tied it to the You Matter movement by Angela Maiers), our discussion may challenge your thinking about grand events. A post that started some interesting discussion on Twitter was: Your Back to School Message is Hurting Teachers. Jessica shared Greg Wolcott’s idea of the Significant 72 and how important the first 72 hours (or 3 days) of school should be all about relationship building. And that also goes for the first 72 after a break. Read about the Significant 72 here: https://www.smore.com/ddc84-significant-72

So something happened to me the other day that felt pretty unbelievable/profound/strange. It’s hard for me to describe it, and it was so – I don’t know – WEIRD that I had to stop what I was doing, open up the voice memo app on my phone, and record what had just happened so that I could acknowledge it and remember for later. In this audio, I’m walking my dog Scarlett (you can hear her panting in the background) but check this out: I learned the term “synchronicity” last summer after listening to Gabrielle Bernstein’s book, The Universe has Your Back (affiliate link), on Audible. I had just put in my notice at my day job, I was riddled with anxiety, and I was doing everything I could to distract myself from the fear and negative thoughts and coach myself through it. So at the time I listened, I hadn’t really paid attention to it and I never thought much about the book after. Until this thing happened the other day, where I physically stumbled at the exact same moment Marie Forleo said the world stumble when talking about the huge success of author JK Rowling… Why is that so important to me? Because for this first 6 months of self-employment, even though I have hustled my butt off, I had been majorly obsessing over one thing. Money. Having enough, making enough, paying myself, paying my taxes, cutting back expenses, changing pricing structure, increasing revenue, releasing my money blocks, cultivating a mindset of abundance. Money, money, money. And it was feeling like everything I was doing just wasn’t WORKING to get me to where I wanted to be. It felt like a struggle, every single day, to make money. So I just decided to let it go. I went on vacation the first week in July and for the first time in 6 months, and if we’re being honest, 4 years, I wasn’t thinking about making money. And it felt SO GOOD that I decided to just stop focusing on making money or saving money or spending money. I’m building relationships and creating content and streamlining systems and doing this podcast… So I Googled the word “synchronicity” and the definition is “the simultaneous occurrence of events that appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.” Gabby Bernstein calls synchronicity a sign from the universe. In a blog post on Psychology Today, writer Gregg Levoy described a moment of synchronicity he experienced when he was contemplating quitting his job: Here’s what he said: “I was driving home from work one day, listening to a song on the radio called “Desperado,” by the Eagles, and as I pulled up to the curb in front of my house, the last line I heard before I turned off the car was “Don’t you draw the Queen of Diamonds, she’ll beat you if she’s able; the Queen of Hearts is always your best bet.” I turned off the ignition, opened the door, stepped my foot onto the curb, and there at my left foot was a playing card—the Queen of Hearts. I just sat there utterly dumbfounded, and wondering, of course, what it meant? When I mentioned the incident to a friend that evening, she said, with an extravagant quality of assuredness, that when you’re on the right path, the universe winks and nods at you from time to time, to let you know. She also said that once you start noticing these little cosmic cairns, once you understand that you’re on a path at all, you’ll begin to see them everywhere.” When I stumbled and didn’t fall at the exact same moment that Marie Forleo described JK Rowling stumbling her way to success, I took that as a sure sign that I’m on the right track, that I will achieve whatever I set out to achieve when I let go of the constant obsession with money and put my focus back on why I really started this business in the first place. So what about you? Where have you noticed synchronicities or signs that you’re on the right track?

We are continuing our 30 Days of Gratitude! If you missed the scoop about why we’re celebrating, be sure to check out Episode One. Yesterday, we talked about one of my suicide attempts. If you missed it be sure to check it out. Today, we’re going to be discussing Day Fourteen’s topic: Knives in Your Back. Wow! The tea I could spill when it comes to THIS! Honey, they will smile in your face, stab you in your back and then blame you for bleeding! Do NOT get Na’Kole started this good ole morning. Betrayal is a terrible thing. It works for your good like everything else does, but it doesn’t feel good. We know that betrayal is what sent Jesus to the cross, but had it not been for that betrayal, the ultimate goal for Jesus’ life would not have been accomplished. That doesn’t make betrayal feel any better though, right? Right. If you are ever in a situation that presents an opportunity for you to betray someone, remember how it felt when you were betrayed. Just because all things work for our good doesn’t mean that we should just go out betraying folks. The pain of betrayal is real. It hurts when we think people are on our side and we find out that they had bad motives the whole time. It’s painful when we trust others with our secrets and we hear them out in the street. Betrayal is a painful wound that is inflicted upon the heart. There’s no denying that. In my book, I talk about how Jesus is betrayed… but then I flip the script as I so often do, and I talk about how we betray ourselves. How do you betray yourself? You betray yourself when you go against what you know to do. You betray yourself when you’re not true to who you really are. We focus so much on others betraying us that we forget about how often we betray ourselves. Staying in relationships we know are not good for us? Betrayal. Eating things we KNOW we shouldn’t eat? Betrayal. Saying things like, “I’ll never make it”, “This will never get better”, “I’m a failure”, “I can’t do anything right”... Betrayal. Think about that for a moment. Think about all the times you have betrayed yourself. Just think about it. Now that you’ve thought about it, go ahead and come out of agreement with those negative words. Go ahead and come out of agreement with the things you spoke over yourself. Go ahead and apologize to yourself for the times you betrayed yourself. Forgive yourself. Don’t beat yourself up, but definitely take a moment to acknowledge the truth of what you now know. And now… Fill your space with gratitude. Be grateful that you are stronger because of what you have endured. Be grateful that the betrayal of others didn’t result in your demise. Be grateful that the times you betrayed others were forgiven. Be grateful that you now know not to betray yourself any longer. Knives in your back are never good… especially when they come from you. You’re wiser now, though… so I thank God that you are moving forward. Have an amazing day today. Show love to yourself AND others. Be GREAT! I speak life to you and everyone and everything connected to you! Catch me tomorrow! XOXO, Na'Kole ♥

Today, I’m on the edge of my seat wanting to give you a new strategy that will help you grow your business and make the most of your funnels, email marketing, Facebook ads and so much more. Everything you want for your business starts with an intention, right? Then, you add enthusiasm and dedication toward your idea. But, then what? Unfortunately, for many what happens next is resistance—whether it’s in the form of self-doubt, a financial obstacle, or perhaps just a seemingly unrealistic goal. By accepting these as obstacles, you are giving into the resistance and giving up on what what could be. So how do you get what you really want? Gabby Bernstein, best selling author and next-generation thought leader, is here to show you how you can burst through the resistance and actually create those new opportunities for your business. Her techniques of choice have included meditation and manifestation - two things I’ve never personally explored in my own business until now. Gabby used these techniques to achieve her number one goal—being interviewed by Oprah. (I mean, come on! Oprah?! That’s huge!) She’s sharing her techniques here. Listen in on the juicy details to learn how to make powerful achievements in your business now! As you will hear us chat about on my latest podcast episode, Gabby recently released her new book, “The Universe has Your Back.” She has a special bonus for those who buy her book. She’s giving you six-and-a-half hours of free training based on principles in her book. Buy Gabby’s book and get started on her bonus training now!
Are you operating from “multiple hat syndrome” in your business? Many entrepreneurs suffer from the overwhelm of trying to wear too many hats, especially in the early stages of their business. My special guest, Meredith Eisenberg, will be sharing tips and strategies for operating from your “Zone of Brilliance” through the power of Collaboration, so YOU can focus on what YOU do best and leave the rest to your Collaboration Partners. This week’s hot topics will focus on: 1. Your ‘Back of Envelope’ Marketing Plan 2. 3 Traits to Look for in a Collaboration Partner 3. Bartering Pros & Cons: Making it work for YOU Meredith Eisenberg is the co-founder of Time Traders Club. She has been helping online business owners create thriving businesses based on their passion for 8 years. She started a business as a VA who did EVERYTHING for her clients (writing copy, creating websites, writing press releases, making travel arrangements) - and that was an expensive mistake (she had 15 years of award-winning PR experience). On the other hand, she worked with clients who struggled to hire the right team for their business - especially in the beginning when they didn't have much money to spend. Meredith, who spent her pre-virtual career creating profitable partnerships for individuals, organizations, and businesses of all sizes, thought, there must be a better way! Thus Time Traders Club was born. You can learn more at www.timetradersclub.com

Presented in collaboration with the Association for Middle Level Education. Jokes You Can Use: An American tourist was lunching in a restaurant in China where the specialty was duck. The waiter explained each dish as he brought it to the table. "This is the breast of the duck; this the leg of the duck; this is the wing of the duck; etc." Then came the dish that the American knew was chicken. He waited for the explanation. Silence. "Well?" he finally asked, "What's this?" The waiter replied, "It's a friend of duck." Waiter: And how did you find your steak, sir? Customer: Well, I just pushed aside a bean and there it was! What do you call a bear in the rain? A drizzly bear What did the bean say to the bean? Why do are seagulls called seagulls? Three tomatoes are walking down the street.
