Send us a textI am delighted to welcome this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, Jon Saxx, saxophonist extraordinaire. I first experienced Jon on a cruise we attended prior to the shutdown—Festival at Sea. Jon was a ‘house musician' for Festival at Sea, the longest-running African-American cultural cruise. Created by African-American entrepreneur and owner of San Francisco's Blue World Travel Agency, Patricia Yarbrough, Festival at Sea has put on over 35 consecutive years of sold out full ship charters of its annual cruise. In addition to Festival at Sea, Patricia's affiliate brand, Friends of Festival at Sea puts on luxury cruises on high-end vessels to exotic locations every few years. Patricia was a guest on The Joy of Cruising Podcast and it is really worth a listen,  Ep 39. We recently had the opportunity to experience Jon again, this time up close and personal, when Friends of Festival at Sea put on an amazing itinerary River cruise in Southern France on AmaWaterways AmaKristina coupled with 3 days in Paris. Besides being a part of the evening entertainment on AmaKristina, Jon headlined a Gospel Brunch Event. It was during the Friends of Festival at Sea Gospel Brunch when Jon shared his personal testimony that I decided I had to bring this gentleman with the great story to the listeners of The Joy of Cruising Podcast.Jon Saxx was voted Best Local Jazz Artist in So Florida by Miami New Times in 2008 and has performed with jazz and R&B stars Najee, Montell Jordan, Howard Hewitt, and National Anthem Performances for the Miami Heat. Jon was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio earned a degree in Manuf Engineering. He was employed by Johnson & Johnson as a Med Device Engineer for 4 years. Jon's musical inspiration, Mr. Wright, his saxophone teacher, taught him to go beyond playing the music, to making the music a reality for himself and his audience! Witnessing Jon in his element, whether or not his eyes are hidden under one of his trademark hats, or 3-piece suits, you realize you're watching a man possessed by the spirit of jazz tRelying on ship wifi is slow, unsecure, sometimes not available & at foreign ports travelers don't want to pay their carriers' high fees. Memphis native Darryl Sanford has been playing music all of his life. From playing the drums at the age of two and later matriculating to the piano, Darryl developed an ear for music. Darryl teaches music theory and is also a member of the legendary Bar-Kays. Darryl first started playing for churches as a teenager and has been playing for churches and choirs in the city of Memphis ever since. By the time he entered his twenties, he started breaking into secular music by playing for a jazz band and then eventually breaking off into the r&b and neo-soul scene in the city of Memphis and surrounding areas. After playing for many of the artists and singers in the city, he started playing for more mainstream artists in jazz and r&b, such as Shalamar, Howard Hewitt, Euge Groove, Kim and Kayla Waters, Alexander O'neal, and would eventually become a member of the legendary funk group The Bar-Kays. Darryl Sanford's main motivation is to be a light and spread positivity through the power of music.

At age sixteen, Michael Bland won the "twin cities' best drummer" contest and was the beginning of a rewarding career. With his recognition as a prodigy, Michael was actively sought by many local acts. At seventeen, Hiram Bullock snagged him up, and took him to Pittsburgh and New York to do some one-nighters. That same year, he joined Dr. Mambo's Combo, a house band at Bunker's Music Bar and Grill, a local club where many Minneapolis musicians cut their teeth. Bunker's is where Prince first spotted Michael, Michael joined prince in 1989 and he toured, recorded, and performed with the new power generation for the next seven years. Kaluba Patrick Mumba Review The Throwback Remixes is as aptly titled. It is a musical rendezvous with the R&B of noughties in true “In the mix” fashion. The opening track is David Josias” It's Ashame” from 2000. A track with the kind of lilt that pulls you into a groove underscored with vocal lines that reference some 70’s and 90’s classics like the The Spinners It’s a Shame and Sugar Hill gangs Rappers Delight. Track 2 is Roi Anthony’s two steppin Who’s Gon Love Me”. It continues in the same vein but kicks off the groove with percussive elements that make you “curious” (?? -read on) Track 3 finds Lydia getting “Closer” to the “Surface” with a contemporary re-working of this 80’s staple with Pic Conley signature flute embellishments. Track 4 is a remix of a cover; Babyface’s “For the Lover in You” featuring Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniel, Howard Hewitt and LL CoolJ ……..#Ooohbabybaby#, it oddly implores one to reach out for the replay button but then MixSensei cunningly introduces another remarkable remix in the form of LevertSweat&Gill’s Midnight Star cover -Curious (got the wink now) featuring Busta “rambunctious” Rhymes and MC Lytte. To max it out, the sequence is re-directed into avenue-do-not-disturb-this-groove with Diane Marsh’s understated “Do Not Give Up On Lovin” before Positive Flow’s “My Prediction” and its contagious vocals by none other than Omar. If you suffer from R_&_B_Mylitis, the closing track will send you into a ecstatic high with its in your face sound and a chorus line that evokes the suggestive hook in Kool & The Gang’s Ladies Night. I suppose it is MixSensei Mel’s way of telling you that #This is his mix-tonight, everything is going to be - alright#!

I had a great time talking to R&B Historian, radio host, motivational speaker and Philanthropist, Tyrone DuBose about the songs he loves. He is considered Americas premier R & B Music Historian, radio host and music expert. Listeners will be familiar with the distinctive bass-baritone voice of the Cincinnati, Ohio native as the radio host of the syndicated radio program, "Timeless Traxx," a nationally syndicated radio program that reaches more than 40 stations, and an international following in five countries. His extraordinary knowledge of R&B music history made him a perfect contributor and commentator for the popular TV One series, "Unsung." "Unsung" is the acclaimed, award-winning documentary series that features one-hour biographies, celebrating the lives and careers of successful music artists or groups who, despite great talent, may have been under-recognized or under-appreciated. In many cases, the artists or groups exploded on the Billboard charts with a string of hits, only to have their careers derailed my major crisis or circumstance. The show has featured a plethora of artists including James Brown, Martha Wash, Hi-Five, Howard Hewitt, Kashif, Yarborough and Peoples, CeCe Pennistion, The Manhattans, The Chi-Lites, Kenny Lattimore, After 7, and Deborah Cox - just to name a few. On the show, DuBose shares unknown facts and commentary about these legendary artists, and educate music lovers about the behind-the-scenes facts of their favorite recording artists. In its 12th season, the show has won multiple NAACP Image Awards. DuBose continues to dispense his R & B tidbits of knowledge on talk show host Sheryl Underwood's radio show, serving as a contributor for the segment, "A 60 Second Moment in Music History." He’s also a three-time Black Music Award winner, making history by winning the distinction of America’s number one R&B Historian three times in a record 12 months. His expertise is lauded across the country. Many may also know that Tyrone DuBose is the voice of many national television and radio commercials, and the official voice of the Hollywood African Prestigious Awards, and winning the lifetime achievement award from UView Media in Los Angeles, California. He also played with Gospel Legend Shirley Caesar at age 16. After graduating from high school, Williams did a four-month tour of Japan with other young talented musicians, which he states as being "unforgettable". Upon returning to the States, that same band did a three-month tour opening for soul legend Al Green. From the age of 4, Amma Whatt’s professional journey has been one of accomplishment, passion and variety.  As a dancer, under the tutelage of her parents she studied and performed the traditional music of West Africa and The Caribbean. As an actress and entertainer at 16, she participated in a hilarious one-on-one TV interview on Bill Cosby's "Kid's say the Darndest Things". As a vocalist, she left her mark in the Howard University Jazz Vocal Performance Program and as a soloist in the Howard Gospel Choir.  Amma then toured the US and internationally as a supporting vocalist with Glory of NY Gospel Singers, Ruben Studdard, Karen Clark-Sheard, Ki-Ki Sheard, Shirley Murdock, Howard Hewitt, Tulani Kinard, Byron Cage, Rob Murat, and Melba Moore. It was as a Hollywood Week Finalist on the 5th season of American Idol, that Amma’s talent drew the attention of film and television producers. She appeared in the 2007 film August Rush and sang on the film’s Academy Award-nominated song “Raise It Up”, highlighted by a live performance at the 2008 Academy Awards.  Most recently, you can hear Amma singing "Get Happy" in the new Home Goods commercials airing on national television and radio. While Amma continues to share the stage and album features with a wide variety of artists such as Jarrard Anthony, Nicholas Ryan Gant, Monet, Darien, Catz & Dogz, Mark de Clive-Lowe, and Jason Moran, to name a few, her talents are very much in demand as a songwriter and producer.  Amma co-wrote “Just the Way You Are” for Kindred and The Family Soul’s “The Arrival.”  In recognition of her community service work, Amma was named a grant recipient of the Miracle Corners of the World Alumni Venture Fund. Amma used her grant to sponsor a youth day of fun for the Egbe Iwa Odo Kunrin/Binrin Rites of Passage program.

Jarrard Anthony – Ready to Live  To evolve, elevate, enrich, edify, encourage—these signifying words pepper singer/songwriter/producer and multi-instrumentalist Jarrard Anthony's conversation whenever he describes his goals as a seeker, teacher, student, husband, father and artist. Each time the doer presses the curve of a guitar against his body or sits behind an ivory row, he is digging to unearth the stories and melodies of a shared humanity and spiritual source. Jarrard Anthony wants to connect. He wants listeners to experience the exchange of mutual energy, the transfer of love, knowledge, intimacy, and appreciation through music —the lifeblood of Anthony's own healing brand of soul. His latest full-length project, Ready to Live, brings him closer to his goal of connection.  “Mr. Independent.” Over the next five years, Mr. Independent launched a label (JAP Music & Entertainment Group), landed distribution with Bungalo/Universal, appeared in numerous magazines (VIBE, Black Beat, Blues & Soul), and shared stages with Silk, Monica, Cam'ron, Amerie, The O'Jays, L.L. Cool J, Howard Hewitt, Lyfe Jennings, Anthony Hamilton, The Gap Band and Pieces of A Dream, among others—artists as varied in their genres and approach as Anthony was becoming in his own.

Born in Richmond, VA Jarrard Anthony was best known as a 3yr old Chuck Berry impersonator. Demonstrating an early aptitude for writing songs to video game melodies, Anthony caressed his 1st keyboard on Christmas at age 10. By HS, he’d made a commitment to share his gifts and seriously study his craft, learning from influences as varied as Maurice White of Earth Wind and Fire, Sting, Jodeci, and the bright-voiced Corey Day from Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band. While in school, Anthony joined an R&B group, Personal Preference, learning the art of compromise and collaboration that would later inform his writing for artists like Howard Hewitt, Franklin Roberts, Bobby Lyle, Tonia Woods and being sought after for studio work with Levi Little of Blackstreet, Tim Dillinger, CJ Lewis, and producer Joshua Thompson. Refinement in dance, voice, and performance came through 10,000 gladwell hrs of group rehearsals, lessons, talent show and local radio showcases, before eventually wowing the Apollo audience in NY, ultimately taking the Amateur night win. At 19 Anthony decided to step out on his own, releasing a single “So D-vine”. His indie EP debut, The Dream, soon followed as did a #2 spot on the UK charts. Anthony’s early recording success overseas opened the doors for relationships with famed producers Nate Smith, Bob Baldwin, Nolan Doran, and Joe McMinn, who worked for 2 yrs with Anthony on Don’t Sleep Just Dream. An international “Don’t Sleep Just Dream” tour followed, taking Anthony around the globe subsequently turning down financially dubious major label deals, earning the moniker, Mr. Independent. Over the next 5 yrs, Mr. Independent would launch a label, JAP Music Ent Group, and a major distribution deal with Bungalo/Universal. With the NIA/Purpose Music Group distributed Ready to Live, Jarrard lyrically/musically demonstrates a marked evolution from a carnal, young R&B lothario to growing man.
