Tune in for two special broadcasts of CREATIVES on WRFI an interview with Indigenous filmmaker Paige Bethmann on her new documentary 'Remaining Native'Zoë Van Nostrand interviews Paige Bethmann (Mohawk & Oneida) on her recent documentary Remaining Native which will be showing at Cinemapolis with a filmmaker talkback on December 7th at 2:30pm in collaboration with the Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀLearning Project. This screening of "Remaining Native" is made possible in full with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County.Paige Bethmann is a Haudenosaunee from the Mohawk and Oneida communities, and has worked in non-fiction television for various digital and broadcast networks such as ESPN, PBS, Vox Media, Youtube Originals, USA, and NBC. She is a graduate of Ithaca College, with a bachelor's degree in Film, Television, and Radio from the Park School of Communications. Remaining Native is her first feature film.The interview explores Paige's role and identity as a storyteller in her community, and the responsibility she feels as a descendant of a boarding school survivor in telling the story of Ku and his relationship with his grandfather who ran away from his residential boarding school through the Nevada desert three separate times as a child. New episode of Creatives on WRFI, Youth Radio Project volunteers Eli and Will have a conversation with Brendan Canty, long time drummer of fiercely independent post-hardcore band Fugazi.Along with Ian McKaye, Guy Piciatto, and Joe Lally, Brendan and Fugazi helped define the sound of indie rock in the 1990's. After releasing six albums and relentlessly touring (all the while, doing everything in their power to not ever charge more than $5 to see them live), Fugazi went on indefinite hiatus in 2003. Her multifaceted practice — spanning film, video, motion graphics, photography, interactivity, and audience participation — centers on subjects such as country musicians, waitresses, feminists, and precarious workers. Influenced by her formative years with Paper Tiger Television in San Francisco, drew embraces a DIY aesthetic and media-critical approach aimed at accessibility and social critique. She is an active member of the Class Conscious Photographers and Artnauts collectives. Through her work, drew continues to explore the power of media to question, connect, and catalyze change. She is currently professor of Design at UC Davis, where she teaches screen-based interactive design.Jesse Drew's research and practice centers on alternative and community media and their strategic use in building movements for democracy and justice, particularly among the global working class. An active audio-visual artist, his interactive, cinema, photography and installation work has been featured in showcases and galleries internationally. His writings have appeared in numerous publications, journals and anthologies, including Resisting the Virtual Life (City Lights Press), At a Distance (MIT Press), Collectivism After Modernism (University of Minnesota), and West of Eden (PM Press). His book, A Social History of Contemporary Democratic Media is published by Routledge. He is currently professor of Cinema and Digital Media at UC Davis, where he teaches media archaeology, radio production, documentary studies, electronics for artists, and community media. The Ithaca Pride Alliance (IPA) was formed in 2024 to serve as the first official group of organizers for LGBTQ+ focused events in Tompkins County. Andrew Scheldorf, local drag performer and current Chair of the IPA Board talked with WRFI in advance of their second annual "Pride in the Park" festival, which will take place Sunday June 15th in DeWitt Park.
