This was a terrific Tuesday crossword by Enrique Henestroza Anguiano, featuring -- of course -- a terrific theme and a strong supporting cast of "other clues". As an example of the latter, we have 60A, Ocean, poetically, MAIN; 70A, They need a push to get started, PEDALS; and the indisputable 1D, Crossword construction, e.g., CRAFT.Wrapping it up, we have a great Triplet Tuesday™ segment, in which Mike demonstrates that stalling, too, is a CRAFT
For the latest episode we are honoured to share a recent talk at Falmouth University's School of Film & Television by Rod Stoneman titled 'Amongst Artistic Forms of Thought'. Rod's talk discussed different and often radical uses of film form to move the art form and audience thinking into different, not literal, not factual, non information-driven places. To illustrate his talk he drew on a number of filmic examples including two different engagements with Hitchcock's work. To close the talk Rod discussed the work of his late friend Malcolm Le Grice, who had a deep association with the UK South West, as does Rod, and shared some examples of Malcolm's work to illustrate how radical, experimental and artistic (and prolific) he was, right up until his death late 2024. Here is a list of clips used, with links to more information and where possible, links to see the works - The Phoenix Tapes (1999) dir. Matthias Muller, Christoph Girardet. Malcolm Le Grice Elsewhere in the episode Dario and Neil discuss the role and place of radical forms of cinema in film culture and reflect on Rod's talk and his thinking around different ways of engaging as audiences and filmmakers with thought, form and subjectivities. Rod Stoneman is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Galway. He was the Director of the Huston School of Film & Digital Media from 2003-15 and Chief Executive of Bord Scannán na hÉireann / the Irish Film Board from 1993-2003. Previously a Deputy Commissioning Editor in the Independent Film and Video Department at Channel 4 Television from 1983-93. He has made a number of documentaries, including Ireland: The Silent Voices, Italy: the Image Business, Between Object and Image. He is the author of Chávez: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Seeing is Believing: The Politics of the Visual and Educating Filmmakers with Duncan Petrie. In this episode of The Pleasure Priority Podcast, Amber discusses the current FAFO (Fuck Around and Find Out) movement, emphasizing its relevance to Black women resting and self-care. The conversation reflects on the critical role black women have played in pushing social movements forward and the need for us to rest following the 92% turnout in recent U.S. elections that still didn't produce favorable results. The FAFO movement encourages black women to focus on self-care and allow others to take up the mantle of activism while we take the next four years to rest. Amber highlights various forms of rest, including physical, creative, mental, social, emotional, and sensory rest, as essential practices for resting intentionally ad sustaining well-being. In addition, the episode promotes National Day of Rest for Black Women on March 10th, honoring the legacy of Harriet Tubman, and invites listeners to join her for the Black Girl Burnout Society's virtual event celebrating and discussing the National Day of Rest for Black Women on March 9th. Black women resting and prioritizing personal well-being are revolutionary acts that deserve to be honored and recognized. We don't hear enough about Gil Scott-Heron these days. And when we do, we often get the same few crumbs: his invention of a sort of proto-hiphop, some reference to his social concerns, and, of course, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" (which too often is wildly misinterpreted). What about Gil Scott-Heron the unique stage performer? What about how hilariously funny he was? What about the singular vocal instrument that he developed? How about the utterly distinctive songwriter? And who better to listen with than guitarist/composer/bandleader Vernon Reid? The WKCR archives will yield rare treasures, and Vernon, as always, has a plethora of precious insights. Host Mitch Goldman will also ask him about his band Living Colour's upcoming rare NYC appearance at the Hard Rock Cafe on June 19th. It's on WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR-HD or wkcr.org Monday (6/10) from 6pm to 9pm. Or join us next week when it goes up on the Deep Focus podcast on your favorite podcasting app or at https://mitchgoldman.podbean.com/. Either way it's ad-free, all free, totally non-commercial. In his article “Roland Garros: 5 things we learned on Day 2 - Alcaraz express”, he recounted the match between Stan Wawrinka and Albert Ramos-Vinolas, and you were to answer these two questions: how long was the match, and who won? The answer is, to quote Paul's article: “While Carlos Alcaraz was displaying coltish exuberance at the start of his straight sets sortie against Flavio Cobolli, Stan Wawrinka was coming to the end of his old warhorse extravaganza. The 38-year-old Swiss muscled his way into a two-set lead against Albert Ramos-Vinolas. But the Spaniard fought back to force a decider which Wawrinka won. It all took four hours and 35 minutes."I think it was special today again to be here at Roland Garros," said Wawrinka who beat Novak Djokovic in the 2015 final. "There was a lot of support, a lot of fans. It helped me a lot to stay in the match and to keep fighting for it."In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question: “How do you like to celebrate your birthday?”, which was suggested by Radhakrishna Pillai. The winners are: Priyanka Paul, the president of the RFI Women's Club in Murshidabad, India. In episode 37 I talk to Philly rapper lojii about his love for Gil Scott-Heron, an American soul and jazz poet, musician, and author, known primarily for his work as a spoken-word performer in the 1970s and 1980s. His collaborative efforts with musician Brian Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues, and soul, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. His own term for himself was "bluesologist", which he defined as "a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues". His poem "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", delivered over a jazz-soul beat, is considered a major influence on hip hop music.

In this episode I explore the philosophical meaning of the phrase, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", which was popularised by the singer Gil Scott-Heron. I also explain why we need to be cautious about the possible emergence of 'fake' political revolutions engineered by the controlling elites in order to maintain their control over the planet. As a counter balance to this possibility I describe how we can bring about an organic non-political conscious revolution in response to rising governemnt tyranny in many countries.

The cover art of Adrian Younge's album The American Negro depicts the shocking image of a man hanging from a tree. Flip the cover over and the other image reveals that on his back is a note which reads 'This n***** voter." You may ask "Why, do we need an image so offensive? Or an album like this one now?" A multi-hyphenate artist dedicated to shining a light on the unsung heroes of soul, jazz and culture, Adrian also shares a deep love for history which he is keen to impart to us. As he believes knowledge and education are the key to understanding our current social ills. The American Negro is a multi-pronged project that includes a short film called TAN and Younge's podcast Invisible Blackness. His conversations with Public Enemy's Chuck D and Brian Jackson, Gil Scott-Heron's jazz collaborator on "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and some of the most crucial albums of the '70s contributing to the Black Consciouness —are illuminating and not to be missed. Many thanks for making this possible — Adrian for taking on this work of helping us all to educate ourselves. Malik experienced racism from a young age initially in the care system where he was taken into custody aged nine in 1975 after his father had a stroke having committed no crime. He moved to several different community homes where he suffered varying degrees of physical and racial abuse over the years until his care order ceased at the age of 18. Soon after he was mentored by Gill Scott Heron who saw something in him that he did not see in himself - potential! There is so much here including a cup full of gems! Hope you are ready for the ride! The Revolution Will Not Be Televised was inspired by the Last Poets' Niggers Are Scared of Revolution. Letters to Gil available for pre order can be found here. Music can unify people in a profound way through lyrics and storytelling. Black artists in America have long used music as a medium to express their struggles and experiences as well as their hope for change. While today we look back on these Black ballads and protest anthems with respect, they were often received with backlash and aggression upon release. Songs featured: “PEOPLE GET READY” – The Impressions “INNER CITY BLUES”— Marvin Gaye (Performed By Devon Gilfillian) “FIGHT THE POWER”—The Isley Brothers (Live) “WAKE UP EVERYBODY”—Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes (Performed By John Legend & The Roots) "THE MOTOR CITY IS BURNING" – John Lee Hooker "A CHANGE IS GONNA COME" – Sam Cooke "THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED" – Gil Scott-Heron "SAY IT LOUD (I'M BLACK AND I'M PROUD)" – James Brown All work is copyright by the respective performers, songwriters, and publishers. I chatted with organizer, artists and national Bernie Sanders surrogate Phillip Agnew about Iowa, the movement, how he evolved politically, that special Black and Jewish je ne sais quois, that special Muslim Bernie je ne sais quois and more! Plus I include some clips from an event that Phillip and I both took part in called "Class Warfare: The Future of Left Politics," organized by Harvard for Bernie and featuring two back to back panels: "“The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” with Krystal Ball (The Hill, Rising), Meagan Day (Jacobin), Nomiki Konst (The Young Turks, the Nomiki Show) and me; and “Battle for the Soul of the Democratic Party,” with Dr. Cornel West (philosopher, author, Harvard professor), Michael Brooks (The Michael Brooks Show), Esha Krishnaswamy (activist and host of historic.ly) and Phillip. Plus Harvard for Bernie's Piper Winkler!
