Imagine you have a bar that comfortably seats 60 people, but every week, 100 people have to decide whether or not they're going to go to the bar on any given night. If too many people go, then the bar is too crowded, and everyone has a miserable night. But if not enough people go, then that's a missed opportunity to go out. This is the basis of the El Farol problem, which asks us to consider how people make this decision. It's a beautifully simple problem that not only makes you think but also has profound implications. To help us through this problem, we're joined again by its inventor, W. Brian Arthur, External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute and Researcher at Palo Alto Research Center. Brian's going to help us understand how this problem is more than just the story of a bar, but a problem that gives us an incredible insight into how the economy works. Santa Fe has consistently lured free thinkers and intellectuals of different stripes. People like Georgia O'Keefe. DH Lawrence. And Robert Henri who in 1917 said, “Here painters are treated with that welcome and appreciation that is supposed to exist only in certain places in Europe.” It was around then, on a hill about a mile past the main plaza, a colony of artists began to spring up on Canyon Road. Their imprint remains in the fact that six of its blocks today house over 100 galleries. These spaces are supported by visitors from Aspen and Scottsdale who gladly drop thousands on landscapes before sampling the tasting menus at Geronimo. But on the district's eastern fringe sits a low slung building of stucco and cedar beams whose walls house an establishment that bridges this district's well heeled present to its Bohemian past. Its name, as announced by its wooden sign is El Farol. Officially recognized as New Mexico's oldest continuously operating restaurant, we'll learn of its history, but most crucially, through stories, music and an evening of flamenco, get a taste of the place's bewitching atmosphere, or as singer Vicente Griego calls it, "embrujo."

Salvador Santana is a singer, songwriter, keyboardist, composer, poet and activist. The son of ten-time Grammy-winning guitarist Carlos Santana and poet/author/activist Deborah Santana, his music roots reach back to his maternal grandfather, Saunders King, an icon of American blues and his paternal grandfather, violinist and mariachi bandleader Jose Santana. Salvador began playing piano at the age of five and became comfortable with other instruments in high school. In 1999, he collaborated with his father on composing the Grammy-winning track "El Farol" on the album Supernatural. He has recently teamed up with CASA in Action and DEC Artists to create a campaign to tell immigrant stories from across the country and drive voter registration and activism to reform immigration laws. Ally Venable, lead vocalist and guitarist of the powerhouse blues rock Ally Venable Band, started young, singing in church a child. It was only recently, as a protégé of Lance Lopez, that she found her passions: the guitar, blues, and rock. She formed the band and never looked back. The Ally Venable Band has become a powerhouse in the Lone Star State and Ally was named the 2014 and 2015 East Texas Female Guitarist of the Year. Joined by bassist, Bobby Wallace and classically trained drummer Elijah Owings, it is easy to see why some people in the Texas blues community hear the future of blues when she plays. Now on tour in Texas, we are proud to introduce her to an international audience.
