Only at Daraja would girls be so at ease 24 hours before Kenya's 12th grade national examinations. Listen as 12th graders Sharon and Farhia discuss growing up in the Kenyan school system and the KCSE, a three week examination that determines whether they can go to university, what they can study once they are there and why they feel so at ease the day before it all starts. Special Thanks to Salvador Santana for the use of his song, “Rise Up,” in our podcast!About Daraja Academy and the Podcast: Jason and Jenni Doherty are the founders of Daraja Academy and parents to 115 current students and many alumni. Jenni comes from a family of eight children and is the first woman in her family to go to university. Jason comes from a family of five, and his passion is education. When Jason and Jenni Doherty – educators from the Bay Area – visited Kenya in 2006, they were struck by the degree that gender determined opportunity. For families living in deep poverty, access to education was already limited, but sons were still far more likely to attend secondary school than daughters. Girls were being left behind. Thus, they started Daraja Academy. Daraja Academy is a boarding secondary school for Kenyan girls with top academic scores and exceptional leadership skills but without the means to continue their education. The academy provides shelter, food, healthcare, and counseling services so students may focus on their academic and personal potential without the everyday barriers they would otherwise face. Their groundbreaking educational model has generated a community of students filled with intellectual curiosity and a hunger to learn. Through this podcast, we get to know the stories of the girls of Daraja, Daraja Academy, and all the incredible people that support and strengthen Daraja. Only in her first year at Daraja, Faith speaks eloquently and with confidence about the struggles she has overcome in her life. For several years her family survived on the free lunch she would bring home from primary school. She tells us about her families struggles growing up in Dandora, in her words, “a slum right on the edge of the Nairobi dump” and how at times she had to negotiate its dangers to collect metals and plastics to sell.Special Thanks to Salvador Santana for the use of his song, “Rise Up,” in our podcast! The guest Jason Doherty invites onto Daraja Means Bridge Podcast today is a powerhouse in every sense of the word. After an initial rejection from enrollment in Daraja, Rahama chose the path of strength and courage rather than anger, deciding that she would not take NO for an answer. In this episode, Rahama shares what it's like being a young woman in a tense and tribally diverse community as someone who is “too brave and too bold.” As Rahama explains her experience reapplying to Daraja and the following life-changing years of her enrollment--as well as her plans for the world's future--you will quickly learn why “letting this amazing human slip through the cracks” was one of the biggest mistakes Jason has ever made. In this episode you will learn:The dangers and triumphs of sharing your sparks in a discriminating communityThe impact that one Daraja graduate-turned-faculty member made in Rahama's life Why Rahama claims her life truly began with her first day of enrollmentAbout Daraja Academy and the Podcast:Jason and Jenni Doherty are the founders of Daraja Academy and parents to 115 current students and many alumni. Thus, they started Daraja Academy.Daraja Academy is a boarding secondary school for Kenyan girls with top academic scores and exceptional leadership skills but without the means to continue their education. The academy provides shelter, food, healthcare, and counseling services so students may focus on their academic and personal potential without the everyday barriers they would otherwise face. Their groundbreaking educational model has generated a community of students filled with intellectual curiosity and a hunger to learn. Through this podcast, we get to know the stories of the girls of Daraja, Daraja Academy, and all the incredible people that support and strengthen Daraja.Special Thanks to Salvador Santana for the use of his song, “Rise Up,” in our podcast!Connect with Daraja Means Bridge:Website:https://www.daraja-academy.org/LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/company/daraja-academy/https://www.linkedin.com/in/jason-doherty-baa9735a/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/DarajaAcademyTwitter:https://twitter.com/darajaacademyInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/darajaacademy/YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtQiWAdnakahyCnRlvWzoSAEmail:info@daraja-academy.orgBe her bridge! Salvador Santana, son of the legendary ten-time Grammy winning guitarist Carlos Santana, has been a creator and entrepreneur for his entire life. Coming from a long family line of musical innovators, the passion to do things outside of the norm runs in his veins, which has translated to unique successes. His most recent venture is focused on the cannabis industry. Salvador is the founder of VAYA, a socially-conscious lifestyle cannabis flower brand, which takes an all-natural, spiritual feminist tone driven from African (Yoruba) and Mexican indigenous roots. Salvador joins Justin to discuss music, Cannabis, and harnessing positive energy to make a difference.
Salvador Santana, the son of Carlos, is out with a socially-conscious cannabis lifestyle brand called VAYA. In this episode he talks about the pressures of filling his famous father's shoes and his determination to create something more than just another "celebrity-backed cannabis product." It can be difficult being the son of a legend, let alone being the son of a god. Salvador Santana, son of rock legend Carlos Santana, is well aware of that and he was gracious enough to come on the podcast knowing that I was going to explore that often difficult dynamic. His other motivation of course, was to talk about Vaya, his “socially-conscious lifestyle cannabis flower brand, which takes an all-natural, spiritual feminist tone driven from African (Yoruba) and Mexican indigenous roots.”It may sound woo-woo in this age of multinational tech-driven consumer branding that is becoming the cannabis “industry,” but it’s also refreshing to find an advocate who wants to rekindle the ways the plant has been used to heal and to expand consciousness and compassion across the globe. In this podcast Santana talks about the ritual ways of consuming that he has gleaned from his own Black and Chicano roots, as well as a relationship one can build with the plant. I’m no stranger to this way of thinking. Over my own life cannabis has served as a guide, a friend, a teacher and, at times, an antagonist and even an enemy. Like most important relationships you commit to, my relationship with cannabis isn’t one that I can completely control, but I have continually learned from every up and down. What you’ll hear running through this podcast is Salvador’s humility. He says he has no intention of being just another “celebrity backed cannabis brand” that commodifies spirituality, plant medicine and non-white heritage.” Ambitious and noble goals -- who would expect less from the son of a god?

Salvador Santana is a singer, songwriter, keyboardist, composer, poet and activist. The son of ten-time Grammy-winning guitarist Carlos Santana and poet/author/activist Deborah Santana, his music roots reach back to his maternal grandfather, Saunders King, an icon of American blues and his paternal grandfather, violinist and mariachi bandleader Jose Santana. Salvador began playing piano at the age of five and became comfortable with other instruments in high school. In 1999, he collaborated with his father on composing the Grammy-winning track "El Farol" on the album Supernatural. He has recently teamed up with CASA in Action and DEC Artists to create a campaign to tell immigrant stories from across the country and drive voter registration and activism to reform immigration laws. Ally Venable, lead vocalist and guitarist of the powerhouse blues rock Ally Venable Band, started young, singing in church a child. It was only recently, as a protégé of Lance Lopez, that she found her passions: the guitar, blues, and rock. She formed the band and never looked back. The Ally Venable Band has become a powerhouse in the Lone Star State and Ally was named the 2014 and 2015 East Texas Female Guitarist of the Year. Joined by bassist, Bobby Wallace and classically trained drummer Elijah Owings, it is easy to see why some people in the Texas blues community hear the future of blues when she plays. Now on tour in Texas, we are proud to introduce her to an international audience.

I first met Alex Nestor and her music when she played with the Salvador Santana band in Los Angeles. She has her own red hot blues and R&B band and plays with the Tang Gang and solo – just her and a keyboard. A life of trial and triumph has shaped her unique sound filled with messages of love, positivity, and healing while channeling the retro soul artists of the 60’s and 70’s. She has recorded 12 albums, countless jingles, and been in over 25 theatrical productions, as well as working with established musicians such as Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Fifth Dimension, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. This is a classic interview recorded in August last year, so don’t call in. I have begun following the career of MITRE, a singer, songwriter and producer from Mexico City now living in Los Angeles. He is building a fan base in English and Spanish in the US with constant gigs and online promotion. His music is a blend of feelings and sounds ranging from tango, pop, Mexican music, rock and street sounds. His first release, "Fugitivo" on iTunes in 2010 in Mexico, Japan, USA, Canada, and the UK exploded with fan clubs around the world. Mitre is now touring to support his most recent album, Deprador, in which he is joined by the soaring voice of Irene Diaz. One of his hallmarks is collaborating with singers like Diaz, and opening his shows with the Catrina – the icon of the Mexican holiday, Dios Los Muertos. He is now playing in southern California, supporting his debut album in Mitre. This interview was conducted in January.
