Miguel Cabrera hit a two-out RBI single in the third inning of his final home opener to put Detroit up 3-1. The Tigers, though, missed many chances to score more runs by leaving eight runners on base. Giants 16, White Sox 6 – Homer-happy Giants slug 5 more, pound White Sox 16-6 J.D. Thompson is the first Sabres player to reach 45 or more goals in a single season since Alexander Mogilny (76) and Pat LaFontaine (53) did so in 1992-93. Austin Czarnik, Dylan Larkin, Alex Chiasson, Simon Edvinsson, Jonatan Berggren and David Perron scored in regulation for the Red Wings. Lucas Raymond scored the only shootout goal for Detroit. The Bobcats seek their first title after losing in 2013 and '16. Both of Quillan's goals came in the first period. He opened the scoring with 14:41 left on a bank shot from behind the net that went off goaltender Erik Portillo. Quillan added another on a breakaway at 8:39 for his 18th goal of the season. Michigan was seeking its 10th NCAA championship. Golf – The Masters – Koepka living large at Masters, leads with Rahm and Hovland Brooks Koepka is in a three-way share of the lead at the Masters with Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland. Koepka is trying to regain his reputation as a major player. Right now he gets attention as a surprise defector to Saudi-based LIV Golf. All he cares about his having healthy legs. He opened with a 65. Rahm was even more spectacular in his round of 65. That’s because he four-putted for double bogey on the first hole. He followed with seven birdies and an eagle. Hovland played bogey-free. Tiger Woods limped his way to a 74 and was nine back. Golf – The Masters – Tiger Woods’ painful Masters walk results in opening 74 Tiger Woods had three birdies and five bogeys during an opening round of 74 at the Masters on Thursday, leaving him in contention to play the weekend but hardly to win the tournament. He had two tough lip-outs on the front nine, a couple of poor pitch shots that led to bogeys, and some bad luck at the 18th led to his final bogey. It was the worst opening round for Woods at the Masters since 2005, when he followed another 74 with 65-66-71 to capture the fourth of his five green jackets. But he’s hardly the same player these days. He is now a combined 16 over for his last four rounds at Augusta National. NCAAWBKB – Champion LSU women accepting Biden invitation to White House LSU's national champion women's basketball team will accept an invitation from President Joe Biden to visit the White House. University spokesman Michael Bonnette confirmed LSU's intentions on the matter on Thursday, a day after Tigers star forward Angel Reese suggested during a podcast interview that her team should celebrate their title with former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama rather than President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden. Reese made the suggestion after saying she was not inclined to accept an apology from Jill Biden for suggesting that both LSU and runner-up Iowa be invited to the White House. President Biden did not follow through on that idea, inviting only LSU and men's national champion Connecticut. US would bar full ban on trans athletes but allow exceptions A new rule proposed by the Biden administration would prevent schools and colleges from enacting outright bans on transgender athletes, but it would allow certain exceptions to promote fairness or reduce injuries. The proposal sends a political counterpunch toward a wave of Republican-led states that have sought to ban trans athletes from competing in school sports. If finalized, it would become enshrined as a provision of Title IX, the landmark gender equity legislation enacted in 1972. It must undergo a lengthy approval process, however, and it's almost certain to face challenges from opponents. What a night for Moritz Seider & Co.! Tune in as we can a wild 7-5 Detroit Red Wings win over the Winnipeg Jets, including Mo Seider's franchise record-tying 4 assists, Lucas Raymond's 3 points, Dylan Larkin & Andrew Copp's 2 assists, Derek Lalonde's squad struggling at 5v5, Ville Husso's up & down game, Jake Walman staying hot, & more (6:10). Also: Robby Fabbri's strong return (14:50), and Jake Walman & Mo Seider seem to work as a pairing - what gives? Why did the same not go for Ben Chiarot? Is Yzerman's offseason signing of Chiarot still viable if he plays down the lineup next to Hronek (18:15)? We also give credit to Jonatan Berggren & his amazing progression into being a regular NHLer (25:35). In recent breaking news: Jakub Vrana is a healthy scratch for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL due to the veteran rule. Is there something more to the sniper being scratched while he's supposed to be getting in shape (30:35)? Dylan Larkin is now a 3x NHL All-Star - are there other Hockeytown names who should be voted in with him? We discuss that, & whether the NHL's changes to the All-Star format will make the game more enjoyable (34:50). Finally, we take a look at whether Buffalo prospect & Michigan goalie Erik Portillo could be a target for Steve Yzerman to content with Sebastian Cossa (46:35), as well as NHL news including q a look at the playoff race, Florida's potential Connor Bedard problem, Connor McDavid in Edmonton, & so much more (48:50) - enjoy! 08-08 SL - Brian and Marty discuss Erik Portillo's decision to return to college this season, and wonder whether he still should since Michigan recently fired their head coach.
OK so times may be light on direct Sabres news, but thankfully the hockey world hasn't completely gone to sleep. Considering what happened at the University of Michigan and now former coach Mel Pearson, it fired up a conversation about prospect goalie and presumptive UM starter Erik Portillo. Lance and Joe discuss if Pearson's dismissal can and will affect Portillo and his status at UM and if it's a way for the Sabres to jump in and sign him to a contract to lock him in. The guys also dig into what happened with the Wolverines, how there are Sabres connections all over the place, and what would they do with goaltending within ranks if Portillo did decide to sign his entry-level deal with Buffalo now. Thanks as always for listening and thank you even more for the positive ratings and feedback. Draft picks to the left of us, free agents to the right and here YOU are stuck in the middle (of dates) with Lance and Joe. The guys dig in about the 11 Sabres draft picks during the 2022 NHL Draft and give their thoughts on their favorite sleeper picks and also taking a goalie in the second round. What the heck was up with that anyway? The Sabres almost traded for Matt Murray and got the No. 7 pick out of it, too. Sadly, this is the NHL and neither horseshoes or hand grenades. Actually, it's better that it's not those. Relatedly, the Sabres haven't addressed their NHL goalie issue yet so... what the heck are they going to do about it?There are other spots that need addressing in free agency, too, and yes they got into the forward and defense stuff as well. And hey, development camp should be fun unless your name is Ryan Johnson or Erik Portillo. Hunter Dickinson will be returning to Michigan as well, and the boys talk about what his return means and the open-ended decision making process for Moussa Diabate and Caleb Houstan. In the second half of the pod, the dicussion switches to the ceiling of one Jordan Poole who has been dominating the NBA playoffs, They then rank the Michigan players in the NBA currently before comparing this era of Michigan pro's to the era that included Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Glen Rice, and more. Ryan Thomas is joined by Ryan Caughill once again to discuss the offseason of every AFC East team thus far, Owen Power's first week as a Buffalo Sabre, and the status of Sabres draft picks Ryan Johnson and Erik Portillo coming ( or not coming ) to Buffalo
Owen Power's NHL career is a week old and we spend some time reflecting on his strong play through the first four games he's appeared in. We also touch on how he and Rasmus Dahlin are rounding out a formidable top-four for the Sabres. Also on the show is a discussion over Devon Levi and Erik Portillo each returning to school and how that affects Buffalo's decisions in net for the offseason. We wrap up this week's show talking about the introduction of ads on NHL jerseys.
Joe and Luke are back to discuss the situation involving Devon Levi and Erik Portillo, Owen Power's debut and much more!
The boys are back for episode 131 of the pod after Stefon Diggs received a 4 year extension and the Sabres ink first overall pick Owen Power. They talk about what Diggs has meant to the Bills and how this was not a surprise. Sabres goalie prospects, Devon Levi and Erik Portillo, both decide to return to their respective schools next year and the guys talk about what this means for the Sabres future. The big news was that Power has signed with the Sabres and will be making his NHL debut in Toronto tonight. Sam and Ethan talk about what to expect from Power in his first couple weeks with the team.
Hey remember last week when Lance and Joe asked what if Erik Portillo and Devon Levi both decided not to sign after their college seasons ended this year? So... that actually happened and they will NOT apologize for anything... But they WILL talk a lot about it including when, exactly, they have to get Portillo signed or else fall into the Cal Petersen phantom zone. They're also going to talk about Owen Power's imminent arrival to the Sabres and his upcoming NHL debut in Toronto against the Maple Leafs which surely will fly under the radar without any attention whatsoever. Also: What's happening with Ryan Johnson? Will the Sabres and Kevyn Adams have to get extra creative this offseason should the college guys really like college? The guys also read your reviews of the podcast! Thanks for listening and supporting -- we would sign you immediately in college to stay on our team.Follow Lance and Joe on Twitter!Read Lance's work at The Buffalo NewsRead Joe's work at Noted HockeyBig thanks to our musician friends --Intro: MerlinBerlin -- "Orbit" - Find them on BandcampOutro: Chips 'N Cellos -- Boss Fight (Sabre Dance, Khachaturian) - Find them on Bandcamp

Owen Power, Erik Portillo, and Ryan Johnson all had their college hockey seasons come to an end Thursday night in the Frozen Four, which means all are available for the Sabres to sign to pro contracts. Sneaky Joe says if he were Johnson, he would go back to Minnesota, and test free agency next season because of Power, Rasmus Dahlin, and Mattias Samuelsson outrank him on the left side of the blueline. Plus, Joe talks Sabres-Hurricanes and Sabres-Panthers! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Kyle Okposo is one of several Sabres players that is having a bounce back season, on pace to surpass 20 goals and 50 points for the first time in his Sabres career. Is Okposo's best season with the Sabres earning himself a second contract with the Sabres as he's about to go into a contract year? With the news of Sabres goalie prospect Devon Levi returning to Northeastern in 2022-23 for his sophomore season, Sneaky Joe makes the case for the Sabres signing Michigan goaltender, and their 3rd round pick from 2019, Erik Portillo to an entry level contract, to begin playing in Rochester. This would give Portillo an opportunity to develop close to the Sabres and speed up the timeline of finding out what he is as a player, alongside Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, before Devon Levi shows up. Plus, Joe makes the case for trading Minnesota left shot defenseman Ryan Johnson if he doesn't sign with the Sabres this spring, as he ranks behind Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power, and Mattias Samuelsson on the organizational depth chart. Finally, Joe previews the Sabres Tuesday night matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Sabres celebrated Rick Jeanneret on Friday night and they put on quite a show in the process. We talk about the whirlwind evening and many of the highlights of the team's impressive pregame ceremony, decisive win over the Predators and touching post-game tribute. We also touch on prospect Devon Levi and the news that he will be returning to Northeastern for his junior season after finishing 2021-22 as a Hobey Baker finalist. Levi isn't the only collegiate goalie the Sabres need to be tracking, as there are signs that Erik Portillo could qualify as a free agent as early as the 2023 offseason. That, plus Levi's return likely puts him front-and-center to the Sabres plans to ink their collegiate prospects.
We know it's not the offseason yet, but listen, we got a jump on it last week and dang it we're going to keep it going. But first.. Trevor Zegras's latest lacrosse-style goal got Coyotes color commentator a little hot under the collar and... come on, isn't it time to stop being annoyed at the talented guys (2:00)?As for the Sabres, they honored Rick Jeanneret with a banner in the rafters and it was extremely cool to see and heartwarming and... is this a turnaround moment for the franchise? Hmm... (13:00)If things have turned the corner, that makes next season fascinating because the weight of expectations will return with a vengeance and boy that skews how we view things now doesn't it (19:45)?Did you know Rasmus Asplund is the new Johan Larsson and (maybe!) better? Well, now you can think about that possibility (32:00).After a few false starts, the real Victor Olofsson is back (for really real this time!) and that changes the perspective on what to do with him (41:00).It's not a new episode without having more goalie talk and Lance and Joe break out the Worst Case Scenario for Buffalo in regards to Devon Levi and Erik Portillo (48:30). The guys wrap up the week thinking about previous GM faux pas and general roster mismanagement. The classics never die. One half of the Maintenance Day podcast team joined the show this week as Joe Yerdon was back once again. Unfortunately, Lance Lysowski was unable to join for our roundtable discussion. We also touch on the NHL's announcement of rescheduled games and how the stretch run is going to be a challenge for teams to handle as the games will be coming fast and furious.
So... things might feel a little bit down in the dumps when it comes to the Sabres because, you know, they're not the Bills? Also they've got some issues. So! That's why Lance and Joe decided to find some more pleasant Sabres topics like future guys and what a life with proper goaltending might be like and... oh no, there's more peril.0:00 -- Welcome back friends, the guys give a mild recap of the Sabres antics in Nashville and Detroit4:00 -- It's time for Jack Quinn to come on up and stay a while. 16:20 -- Know who else should get recalled and stay?
