“It was 2003, and I came to NYC with Greg Cornelius who is a saxophonist and composer at Bowling Green. And he and I were driving in his Dodge Caravan and I think we were listening to Music for 18 Musicians, and it was raining, and I remember seeing the city lights of New York, and just being overwhelmed with this idea that I need to be here.” Erin Rogers is a saxophonist and composer based in New York City. She is co-artistic director and core member of thingNY, Popebama, New Thread Quartet and Hypercube. Her music has been performed at the Prototype, Ecstatic, and MATA Festivals (NYC), Celebrity Series (Boston), Edmonton Fringe Festival, the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Centro Nacional de las Artes (Mexico City), and NYmusikk Bergen (Norway). Rogers is a member of LA super-group WildUp, and performs with the International Contemporary Ensemble, Talea, and Wet Ink. She is a D'Addario Woodwinds Performing Artist and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Teaching Artist. Rogers can be heard on New Focus Recordings, New World Records, Edition Wandelweiser, Gold Bolus, Love Records, INNOVA, New Amsterdam, and Relative Pitch labels. www.erinmrogers.comI have known Erin for a few years now. Specifically, before leaving New Jersey and heading to Bowling Green, OH to start my graduate work, I saw her saxophone quartet, New Thread Quartet, perform at a church in Jersey City, NJ. After the performance, I introduced myself. We ended up on the topic of me going to grad school and it turned out she is a BGSU alum! What little I knew about Bowling Green, and here I am in NJ meeting someone who went through the program and is doing such awesome work! I've been a fan ever since. Erin is so incredibly hard-working, juggling a varied and wide-ranging freelancing career as a composer and performer in NYC. Recently, she released a solo album titled 2,000 miles, which you can purchase on Bandcamp. Our discussion center almost entirely on the making of 2,000 miles, topics like her improvisational/compositional process, the recording process, traveling from NYC to her hometown in Alberta, Canada, the artistic solutions that grew out of being quarantined, and so much more on episode 24 of the Making Noise Podcast. In today's episode, our very first guest episode, we interview Erin Rogers- Intuitive Channel, Healing, and dear friend of mine. Erin is a leader of leaders. She'll meet you at the intersection of logic + spirit and help you remove the sh*t that keeps you from your most expansive self - and who doesn't want to be that?! Amirite?! Erin gives us the story of her evolution from successful and sought-after corporate recruiter to her exploration of tools like human design and astrocartography to fully embracing her gifts as an intuitive channel. She goes deep into how she went after what society deemed as successful for her and the day she achieved her biggest accomplishment being one of the saddest days of her life. It left her asking...what now? Before then she had had hope, something to strive for. This was the start of her spiritual journey. Erin, like many of us, looked to courses, certifications, healers, psychics and readers to show her the way to happiness and fulfilment. She speaks of her love of spiritual tools of all sorts but what she was really seeking was someone to show her the way. She talked of the day she met with a former General Physician turned psychic intuitive who was able to put words to the gifts she was tapping into and surfacing (one's she had repressed or felt made her 'different' most of her life). We also spoke about Erin's first real channelling session, which I was on the receiving end of one summer day while floating in lake here in British Columbia. What an experience and gift it was to witness. Erin did note that her journey, while it may seem to outsiders that she quit her job on a whim. In reality, it was a steady 10-11 year burn to get there. It took building the trust of her intuition in small ways, over long periods of time to trust it to take her bigger steps in her life. Which is one of the things I admire most about here - her willingness to courageously take a step, just one, without having to know what the destination looks like. This is the embodiment of trusting that you are and will be supported. Erin gives us her definition of purpose and reflects that somewhere between purpose and love is self acceptance. Her purpose is to love herself deeply and to express for that place - a lesson we can all learn from. A recap of what I talked about: Her progression from corporate recruiter to human design + astrocartography reader to intuitive channel Her pursuit of society's definition of success and the day she 'achieved' it being the most depressing day of her life the beginning of her spiritual journey The moment an MD turned intuitive put words to the gifts that posses Her first time channeling for me How she strengthened her ability to lean into and trust her intuition How she handles resistance from others for the choices she makes Erin's beautiful definition of purpose How learning to love herself deeply is her journey Her advice to all of us - simple yet SO profound! The Process: a podcast about creativity and experimental music.
This episode on "The Process" I talk with composer and saxophonist/performer Erin Rogers. We listen to "On View" performed by the Kamratōn ensemble. Erin and I talk improvisation, musical instincts, and maintaining the fertility of a creative idea.
Erin Rogers is a saxophonist and composer based in New York City. Named a “rising star” (Broadway World), her music has been described as “whimsical, theatrical” (Brooklyn Vegan), “a wild ride” (An Earful), and “so complex, it’s primitive.” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). She is co-artistic director of thingNY, Popebama, New Thread Saxophone Quartet, and Hypercube, and has performed with the International Contemporary Ensemble, wildUp, and Talea, at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, the Edmonton Fringe Festival, Resonanzraum (Hamburg), Centro Nacional de las Artes Mexico City, and the Park Avenue Armory. Rogers has been featured on the Ecstatic Music Festival, Prototype Festival, MATA Festival, the Elbphilharmonie’s “Unterdeck”, and NYmusikk Bergen, crossing genres from opera-to-theatre-to-installation-to-silence, through collaborations with Orange Theatre, Panoply Performance Lab, wasteLAnd, Harvestworks, yarn|wire, Experiments-in-Opera, Decoder, Contemporaneous, yarn/wire and Music for Contemplation. She can be heard on New Focus Recordings, New World Records, Edition Wandelweiser, and Gold Bolus labels. Her solo album "Dawntreader” is available on Relative Pitch Records. // erinmrogers.com
Erin Rogers, Head of Marketing, Commercial Banking, at HSBC Canada talks to Rob about what's been awesome during the pandemic, the differences – and the surprising similarities – of marketing to executives in a product-led industry vs. a services industry, marketing's role in breaking down company silos, how marketing can keep its seat at the table, and what she, as a marketing executive herself, looks for when marketers at vendor companies try to cut through the clutter. In this episode we're chatting with Intuitive Coach + Spiritual Guide, Erin Rogers about discovering your destiny using Astrocartography and Human Design. We discuss intuitive channeling, the configuration of planets when you were born, and giving yourself permission to be who you truly are. Erin shares her journey about how life can be transformed by following what lights you up instead of following logic or a formula. Erin also advises ways to balance the lines in Astrocartography and how Human Design is a great supportive tool for growth and transformation.
We have another exciting guest in this week! Hear about Erin Roger's journey into the world of being a freelance musician and composer! The story involves people and organizations that encouraged her throughout her career, a certain famous cowboy-boot wearing flutist in NY, and her close knit group of friends that she performs with!
In this week's episode, Valerie sits down with Human Design Reader and Astrocartographer Erin Rogers to learn all about this fascinating system that provides a practical tool for self-discovery and correct decision-making.This system takes astrology and the teachings of quantum physics, blended with chakras. It divides people into five types: generators, manifesting generators, manifestors, projectors, or reflectors. One of the fantastic things about Human Design is how it relies on intuition to live our best lives, incentivizing people to align their life around their energy (and aura) and to leave behind everything that doesn't serve them. It uses the principle that happy people attract people and positive experiences, so if you're living in alignment, you'll be attracting good things.Episode takeaways:-Human design is a blueprint to who you are.-Balance means different things for everyone.- Manifestors make up about 9% of the world's population.- Reflectors are only about 1% of the world's population.-Give yourself permission to be yourself, even if it defies society standards.-Take some time to consider what makes you happy and what reflects positively in your body and spend more time doing those things.-Human Design can help you understand your decision-making process and help you align your future life goals.-Rethink your routines and why you do what you do: just because society tells you how you should live your life, it doesn't mean that it aligns with who you are and your values. Erin Rogers is a super-talented composer and saxophonist who I've known for a couple of years. We met for the first time over lunch many years ago while I was in the early stages of writing the Composer's Guide, where we had a wonderful conversation about publishing and composer career issues that has always stuck with me. Our paths haven't crossed much in the intervening years, so I was glad to have a reason to reconnect with Erin by inviting her on the show. And boy was I glad I did! This is the first show that I've done not just live, but in-person, as well! We attempted to broadcast as per usual, but I discovered after the fact that Google Hangouts stopped actually broadcasting after the first 20 minutes…leaving another 70 that never went out to YouTube! Fortunately, as I've learned about doing this whole podcasting thing, I've started recording the audio on my own end (and asking my guests to record theirs, as well), so the entire conversation was captured on my laptop, and wasn't lost due to the screw-ups of our Google Overlords. After we stopped our broadcast, Erin and I hung out for several more hours, still talking along the same lines as on the show. We poured ourselves another drink and kept talking at my apartment, then went out for dinner, and kept the conversation going there. A part of me wishes we'd “kept the cameras rolling” as it were, because we covered lots of fertile ground. During our recorded conversation, however, we managed to talk about: Social media How a score isn't always finished until it's performed, or until the composer dies Proofreading your own scores The importance of a second pair of eyes on your scores Allowing time for proofreading and part extraction Having the resources of a publisher behind you vs. taking full control yourself Engraving/formatting standards Setting up your scores and front matter Handling perusal scores Licensing performances Being a performing composer Starting an ensemble for the love of the music Following established models, keeping low overhead, and working with the right people Licensing works for performances Some potential pitfalls of working with traditional publishers Some of the new models for working with publishers Links: Erin Rogers thingNY New Thread Quartet HYPERCUBE
