A new flu vaccine has arrived in Australia and it's not like traditional vaccines – it's cell-based. Cell-based flu vaccines are developed differently from the traditional egg-based vaccines – and they offer advantages in production, scale and better matching viruses in our vaccines to those actually circulating in the community. In this episode of the Briefing, immunologist Dr Julianne Bayliss explains why the new vaccine is a game-changer for Australians and why you need to get the new flu jab. There are already two strains of influenza circulating, leading to a surge in infections and hospitalisations. It's prompted the Queensland Government to offer the flu vaccine for free to anyone who wants it.
Some alarming figures out around flu jabs.Running the numbers, only around one in five people are eligible for a free one, despite the Government saying they are prepared.Official numbers out from the Ministry of Heath also show a low uptake in vaccines with only 736,000 jabs being administered. Asthmatics are being urged to make sure they get the flu vaccination this year. Dr Bryan Betty speaks to Jesse.
There are two types of people in this world. There are the flu-jab people, and the no-flu-jab people. I've always been a no-flu-jab person. Have never felt that I've needed it. And I suppose that comes from something I heard ages ago about people getting the flu jab and ending up getting crook anyway. And being a creature of habit – that's been my approach ever since. Even despite the fact that I got a dose of the flu a few years ago that really knocked me for six. And yes, it was a genuine flu. Not the common cold that many of us – especially blokes – call the flu. I was really, very sick. That didn't change my thinking, though and – to this very day – I'm still a no-flu-jab person. Now, as for the flu-jab people – they swear by it don't they? Religiously, every year, they turn up to get it – whether it's paid for by the Government, paid for by their employer, or whether they pay for it themselves. For these people, the flu jab is another thing that just happens every year. Year after year. Some of the flu-jab people I've known have admitted that it hasn't necessarily stopped them from catching something – but their belief has always been that if they hadn't had the flu jab, they would've ended up sicker than they did. Which, in our current situation, sounds very familiar doesn't it? Just like the COVID jab, the flu jab doesn't necessarily stop you getting the flu – but you may not get it as bad as you would, if you didn't have the flu jab. And this is why today, I'm about to make quite a significant change and become one of those flu-jab people. Because let's face it. How can I criticise the anti-vaxxers who are very quick to criticise the COVID vaccine for being unsafe and failing to protect us against COVID, and then go on and be just as doubtful about the influenza vaccine? That'd be a double standard, wouldn't it? So, it looks like I'll be joining the queue for the flu jab this year, for the first time in my life. You may have heard Health Minister Andrew Little talking about it. He's announced that the Government is going to make more flu vaccines available this year – which will mean up to 2 million people will be able to get it for free. Like the COVID vaccination programme, a big driver behind this is trying to keep as many people as possible out of the hospital system. As vaccine expert Helen Petousis-Harris puts it, dealing with a COVID outbreak and a flu outbreak at the same time would be a double-whammy for hospitals right around the country. So, of course, everything should be done to try and prevent that from happening. And if that means me changing the habit of a lifetime and becoming a flu-jab person, then that's what I'll do. If you listen to the experts, they're telling us that the re-opening of the borders is going to be really challenging not just in terms of increasing our exposure to COVID – but also in terms of increasing our exposure to the flu. As we know, the number of flu cases has dropped significantly over the last couple of years because of all the pandemic lockdowns, border closures and other measures that have been in place. Which could mean more of us are at-risk of getting the flu as these restrictions go, so why wouldn't more of us get protected by getting the flu jab? It's a no-brainer and it makes perfect sense to me. And that's why I'll be getting the flu jab this year – for the first time ever.
You may have read the other flu jab blogs but finally we managed to get Max jabbed although I think the sedation may need re-evaluation as the after affects result in Max shouting rather loudly until the early hours of the morning! Read on, all will be revealed!

If you fall just into the over 50's age or if you are clinically extremely vulnerable you may have been invited to book your Covid Booster Vaccinations and your annual flu jab at the same time but how safe is it to have both vaccinations together? In this week's RNIB Connect Radio catch up with Pharmacist Elizabeth Roddick from New Life Pharmacy in Glasgow our Toby Davey finds out from Elizabeth on her thoughts about having the Covid booster vaccinations and the flue jab at the same time. Elizabeth outlined some of the findings from a trial earlier this year where volunteers were given thee Covid and Flu vaccinations at the same time but in separate arms one in the left arm and one in the right, with only some minor issues such as a slight bit of fatigue and one person suffering a quite bad headache. Elizabeth also talked about the risk if any from younger people getting the covid vaccination and what might happen if a 12-15 year old wanted the Covid vaccination but their parents said no. Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan, a consultant in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine at Barts Health NHS Trust in London, wants to see a renewed focus on how to access those women, ensure that they have the healthcare they need to live long and healthy lives, and break down the stigma around HIV that is intense within some communities. She says South Asian women form a silent and often overlooked minority of women living with HIV, which is concerning as sexually transmitted infections are rising fastest in Asians compared to other ethnicities. Sangita Myska talks to Rageshri and two women living with HIV; Mina Kakaiya who is a mental health and mindfulness trainer of South Asian heritage, and Bakita Kasadha who is a British-Ugandan poet, activist and researcher. What are the new trends for fashion and make up this autumn, and has your approach to beauty changed with the pandemic? Flu injections are highly recommended for diabetes for they offer protection against the 3 to 4 types of flu viruses. Unfortunately, diabetics have an impaired immune system and as such are more at risk of catching the flu virus. In the event, a diabetic catches flu, he or she will have problems controlling their sugar plus it takes a lot longer for diabetics to heal or get rid of their flu. Additional dangers that the flu exposes the diabetics are pneumonia and other conditions.
