MITTI (Discovering Ikigai), 30min., Canada Directed by Sangita Iyer Mitti (Discovering Ikigai) is a story of young woman of colour in Canada who chose organic farming as her career choice. Through her story the film highlights the Japanese concept of Ikigai to inspire others, especially youth, to find their passion and purpose in life. The film also highlights environmental and sustainability challenges the world is facing and how ancient cultures considered Mother Earth with gratitude instead of a commodity. The film also attempts to break stereotypes we have about how/what a farmer looks like. The film poster has been conceived and created by at 12 year art enthusiast who seems to have discovered her Ikigai. http://www.mettlefilms.com/ https://www.instagram.com/mettlefilms Get to know the filmmaker: Several reasons actually. This is one of the topics I am passionate about because culturally I was raised to have a sense of gratitude towards Mother Earth who is considered a life giver, the one who nourishes and sustains us and is worshipped as a Divine Mother. As a mother myself, I believe knowing where our food comes from, learning how to grow our own food and being connected to nature is really important for our future generations because as a society we seem to be getting more and more disconnected from nature. When I formed my production company Mettle Films, it was born with a vision of making films for a cause. Films that are simple, yet thought provoking stories of people, places and things which could also be utilized as a learning resource by schools and parents. I also decided to tell this story to support a local young female farmer, and by showcasing her journey, my hope is to empower others to discover their Ikigai. Can love truly transcend language barriers? Is it possible for two souls to connect in the absence of a shared vocabulary? These questions have puzzled philosophers, poets, and love-struck individuals for centuries. In this Language of Love Conversation, I am thrilled to be joined by Sangita Patel, Canadian TV personality from Love and Translation, to discuss the complexities of finding love across language barriers. Love and Translation is a social experiment reality show where American men and women, who don't speak English, try to form connections without a common language. The women have translators, but the men must use nonverbal cues, engaging in activities like eye gazing and smelling competitions to see if love can grow without words. We dive into: Nonverbal communication and cultural differences in relationships The impact of hormonal contraceptives on attraction Importance of maintaining emotional and physical connection in relationships Importance of communication and affection in relationships, and especially in parenting The power of nonverbal communication and the potential for love to transcend linguistic and cultural boundaries Remember to watch the Love and Translation show to discover more about Sangita's work. Considered the “Blackfish for elephants,” the film exposes the heartbreaking plight of these amazing gentle giants in India. From her home in Canada, Sangita now oversees teams on the ground in India who combat elephant poaching, illegal trade, habitat loss and more. Hope and Sangita discuss the precarious situation for elephants in India, for both the wild population and for the captured elephants used in rituals. “Elephants are the largest animals on earth, and they are literally designed to play a vital role in the ecosystem. Climate change has no borders, so what happens to elephants in India and Africa reverberates and impacts other countries at a devastating pace.” -Sangita IyerResources: Gods in Shackles (website)Gods in Shackles (film)Gods in Shackles (book) Voice for Asian Elephants Society

This week, we have Paul Mihailidis, Sangita Shresthova and Megan Fromm talking about their insights, stories, and theories in their book Transformative Media Pedagogies. We start with the three authors' inspirations for their book, and then our guests share their definition of transformation, before discussing more detailed contexts for transformative media pedagogies and their mutual and crucial experiences at the Salzburg Academy which inspired them to write the book. Last but not least, we specifically talked about three sections in the book: care, imagination, and agency, and their importance for transformative media pedagogies, commenting on how to build those transformative experiences into teachers' specific teaching contexts.Paul Mihailidis's research explores the nexus of media literacies, community activism and engagement in civic life. He is the Founding Graduate Program Director of the newly launched MA in Civic Media: Art and Practice, a 12-month applied masters program that pairs students with organizational partners to solve problems at scale, and Faculty Chair and Director of the Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change, a program that annually gathers scholars and students from around the world to investigate media and global citizenship. His most recent books, Civic Media Literacies (Routledge), Civic Media: Technology, Design, Practice (w/ Eric Gordon, MIT Press) and Media Literacy and the Emerging Citizen: Youth, Engagement and Participation in Digital Culture (Peter Lang) explore the ways in which citizens use media to meaningful participate in civic life in the digital age. Sangita Shresthova is a writer, thinker, speaker, researcher, and doer. She is an expert in online learning, media literacies, popular culture, cross-cultural performance, digital media, and civic engagement. Megan Fromm is an affiliated faculty member in Emerson College and got her PhD in the University of Maryland.
