Described by The New York Times as “one of America's finest artists and singers,” Frederica von Stade continues to be extolled as one of the music world's most beloved figures. She has enriched the world of classical music for three decades. Her career has taken her to the stages of the world's great opera houses and concert halls. She began at the top, when she received a contract from Rudolf Bing during the Metropolitan Opera auditions, and since her debut in 1970 she has sung nearly all of her great roles with the Met. We talked about her signature role, Mozart's Cherubino, her love of Broadway, her respect for Placido Domingo and their Merry Widow performances, and her recent recording, with Thomas Hampson, Richard Danielpour's Elegies, a tribute to her father whom she never met.
In the first episode of musicmakers by medici.tv, Gramophone editor-in-chief James Jolly sits down with superstar mezzo Joyce DiDonato, who opens up about her love for Berlioz and Frederica von Stade, the magic and community of performing onstage, the privilege of a strong audience-performer rapport, the excitement of stepping into a brand-new role, what's coming next in her brilliant career, and much more… Presented with the generous support of Madame Aline Foriel-Destezet.

Frederica Von Stade needs no introduction. She is one of the legends of our time, and one of the most beloved singers in the world. She has made over 60 recordings and has appeared with all of the world's great opera companies. She is also spearheading a new project called The People's Choir of Oakland, focusing specifically on the homeless population. We talked about the People's Choir, and also touched on her career, including her experiences with Bernstein, Karajan, Abbado, and more. This was a blast.

Support the show with a one-time or monthly donation via PayPal (thank you!)Today we are bringing you an interview I conducted back in 2017 with GRAMMY award-winning pianist & composer Taylor Eigsti for a book that I was working on at the time. The book never came to fruition, so I've decided to share the audio here on the podcast. We discuss his early musical life, the 'prodigy' label, the GRAMMY awards, his favorite venues to play at, and Taylor shares an incredible story about McCoy Tyner and the Golden State Warriors. You can find Taylor's music, tour dates and more on his website: https://www.tayjazz.com/About Taylor (courtesy of https://www.tayjazz.com):"New York-based pianist and composer Taylor Eigsti started playing the piano when he was four years old. Growing up in Menlo Park, CA, Eigsti was quickly labeled a prodigy, and has since released 7 albums as a bandleader, in addition to appearing on over 50 albums as a sideman. Eigsti has garnered multiple individual GRAMMY Award nominations over the years for his work as a recording artist and composer, including Best Instrumental Composition, and Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Recently, Eigsti also co-wrote a featured composition with Don Cheadle for the 2017 GRAMMY-winning soundtrack to the motion picture “Miles Ahead”. Over the past 30 years, Eigsti has had the good fortune of performing, touring or recording with such luminaries as Dave Brubeck, Chris Botti, Joshua Redman, Sting, John Mayer, Esperanza Spalding, Chick Corea, Terence Blanchard, Joshua Bell, Snarky Puppy, Vanessa Williams, David Benoit, Chris Potter, Nicholas Payton, Christian McBride, Julian Lage, Marian McPartland, Stefon Harris, McCoy Tyner, Lisa Fischer, Joey DeFrancesco, Red Holloway, James Moody, Ernestine Anderson, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Becca Stevens, Charles McPherson, The Clayton Brothers, Eldar, Dianne Schuur, Joe Lovano, Ambrose Akinmusire, Hank Jones, The Brubeck Brothers, and Frederica Von Stade, among many others. Eigsti has travelled internationally quite extensively with his trio and quartet, and also has been a frequent and integral part of the regular touring bands of Chris Botti, Eric Harland Voyager, Gretchen Parlato, Kendrick Scott Oracle, and Sachal Vasandani. Eigsti's career has involved much global touring, and he has performed at many premiere venues throughout the world, including the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, Salle Pleyel, Red Rocks Amphitheater, Royal Festival Hall, Vienna Konzerthaus, Olympia Hall, Massey Hall, Lincoln Center, Davies Symphony Hall, and many top festivals including Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Singapore Mosaic Music Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Stockholm Jazz Festival, Istanbul Jazz Festival, Quito Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival, Sydney Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, and many more performances worldwide, including a private performance for former President Bill Clinton. Eigsti has also been featured numerous times in various television specials, NPR appearances, commercials, and composed the theme music to the motion picture "Detachment" (2011) starring Oscar-winner Adrien Brody, collaborating on the score with the Newton Brothers. This past year, Eigsti was also featured on a television special with Chris Botti for PBS’s “Great Performances”. In addition to leading and performing with various small ensembles, Eigsti frequently has had the opportunity to work with, compose for and orchestrate music for various symphony orchestras, and has written an extensive repertoire of music for orchestra and jazz ensemble. We already know what a delightful person and great artist Frederica von Stade is. We're welcoming her back to San Diego Opera in the role of Madeline Mitchell, the central character in Jake Heggie's Three Decembers. In this interview she talks about the opera and her role in it, with an additional few words about opera composer Dominick Argento who passed away just a few days before this interview (aged 91) and composed some lovely music for this singer. A wonderful few minutes with a charming lady! Enjoy!
Jake Heggie's connection with Frederica Von Stade is well known, and this was the first complete operatic role that he created for her. We are honored that Ms. Von Stade will be with us again, along with this challenging work about family...the relationships we have as opposed to the ones we wish we had. Enjoy this conversation with General Director David Bennett!
Dale and Alexandra Franzen are amazing mother-daughter RenWomen who both appeared in our book, RenWomen. Dale started her career as a classically trained soprano in both musical theater, operetta, and opera working with icons like Placido Domingo, Frederica Von Stade, and Sir Peter Hall to name a few. After twenty years, Dale's career took a surprising and wonderful turn as she was asked to create a performing arts center in Santa Monica, California. Dale raised over $123-million dollars to build and run The Broad Stage and served as its Founding Director for 17 years and Founding Artistic Director for 7 seasons. After stepping down, Dale embarked on another new path and is now developing and producing a new musical called Hadestown, which, in its off-Broadway run was praised by reviewers as "luminous and spellbinding." She is also a public speaking lecturer and strategic mentor to non-profits and artists. Alexandra has a thriving online business in which she expresses her many skills as entrepreneur, writer, and all over inspirer. She also holds classes and writing/yoga retreats, and is a nonfiction and fiction book author, as well as a multiply published article writer for magazines such as Forbes, Time, Newsweek and the Huffington Post. Her book, You're Going to Survive, is full of inspiring stories from people such as authors, chefs, lawyers, website designers, Broadway performers, jazz musicians, business consultants, and more?each describing one of the worst moments in their entire career, and how they got through it. It is available on Amazon. Both Dale and Alexandra represent the RenWomen traits of risk taking, expansive growth, curiosity, creative problem solving, flexibility, and a trust in one's inner voice.

Constance dör i Salzburg 1842, 80 år gammal.Låtlista:12:03 Rudy Stevenson, Lisle Atkinson, Bobby Hamilton, Nina Simone - Wild Is The Wind Album: Four Women Kompositör: Dimitri Tiomkin Bolag: VERVE 12:05 Jimmy Scott, Ray Charles - If I Should Lose You Album: Falling In Love Is Wonderful Kompositör: Ralph Rainger, Leo Robin Bolag: RHINO RECORDS 12:06 Ronald Brautigam - Rondo In D, K 485 Kompositör: WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART Bolag: Bis 12:10 Mitsuko Uchida - Sonat För Piano Nr 12 F-Dur Kv 332: Sats 2, Adagio Album: Sonat För Piano Nr 12 F-Dur Kv 332 Adagio Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: UNIVERSAL MUSIC 12:12 Edita Gruberova, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Zürich-Operans Orkester - Die Zauberflöte: Nr 14 Album: Die Zauberflöte Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: TELDEC 12:14 Renée Fleming, Charles Mackerras, Orchestra Of Saint Luke's (New York) - Die Entführung Aus Dem Serail: Nr 6, Akt 1, "Ach Ich Liebte" Album: Mozart Arias Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: DECCA 12:18 Jane Glover, London Mozart Players - Serenad Kv 361 B-Dur För 12 Blåsare & Kontrabas Album: Serenad Kv 361 B-Dur - Gran Partita Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: NOVELLO 12:22 Jane Glover, London Mozart Players - Serenad Kv 361 B-Dur För 12 Blåsare & Kontrabas Album: Serenad Kv 361 B-Dur - Gran Partita Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: NOVELLO 12:26 Kurt Sanderling, Bbc Northern Symphony Orchestra (Manchester) - Don Giovanni: Uvertyr Album: Don Giovanni Overture Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: BBC RECORDS 12:29 Frederica Von Stade, Edo De Waart, Rotterdams Filharmoniska Orkester - Le Nozze Di Figaro: Nr 6 Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: PHILIPS 12:32 Kathleen Battle, André Previn, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (London) - Vorrei Spiegarvi Oh Dio...Ah Conte (Kv 418) Album: Arior Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: EMI 12:37 Kathleen Battle, André Previn, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (London) - Vorrei Spiegarvi Oh Dio...Ah Conte (Kv 418) Album: Arior Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: EMI 12:40 Barbara Hendricks, Neville Marriner, Academy Of Saint Martin-In-The-Fields (London), Justin Sillman - Mässa Nr 18 C-Moll Kv 427: Nr 14, Et Incarnatus Est Album: Airs Sacrés Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: EMI 12:46 Barbara Hendricks, Neville Marriner, Academy Of Saint Martin-In-The-Fields (London), Justin Sillman - Mässa Nr 18 C-Moll Kv 427: Nr 14, Et Incarnatus Est Album: Airs Sacrés Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: EMI 12:49 Hans Pålsson - Fantasi För Piano Kv 396 C-Moll Album: Sonatas And Fantasias Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: CHAMBER SOUND 12:55 Hans Pålsson - Fantasi För Piano Kv 396 C-Moll Album: Sonatas And Fantasias Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: CHAMBER SOUND 12:58 Cheryl Studer, Neville Marriner, Academy Of Saint Martin-In-The-Fields (London) - La Clemenza Di Tito: Nr 23, Akt 2, "Non Piu Di Fiori" Album: Queen Of The Night Kompositör: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Bolag: PHILIPS
