In this conversation, we dive into the extraordinary creative partnership between two of the most celebrated figures in contemporary opera—librettist Gene Scheer and composer Jake Heggie. Together, Gene and Jake have brought to life some of the most powerful operatic works of our time, including Moby-Dick, Three Decembers, and It's a Wonderful Life. Their collaboration is not only rooted in artistic brilliance but also in a deep, long-standing friendship.Individually, their accomplishments are equally impressive. Gene Scheer has worked with a range of renowned composers, including Jennifer Higdon on Cold Mountain and Tobias Picker on An American Tragedy. He's also an accomplished composer in his own right—his song American Anthem was featured in Ken Burns' Emmy Award-winning documentary on World War II.Jake Heggie's groundbreaking first opera, Dead Man Walking, with a libretto by Terrence McNally, launched him into the spotlight. Since then, his work in art song and opera has made a lasting impact, earning him the title of Musical America's 2025 Composer of the Year. So who better to explore the dynamic between a librettist and a composer? In this two-part conversation, we unpack what makes a successful collaboration and how words and music come together to create something truly unforgettable.Part One's conversation took place during a particularly exciting time—Moby-Dick was being performed at the Metropolitan Opera. Throughout our discussion, the opera serves as a touchstone for understanding the creative process. We begin with a fundamental question: how do they do it? Specifically, how do hard work and patience shape their creative journey? We get into the nuts and bolts of collaboration—how they challenge and inspire each other to reach new heights. Gene shares insights into the stages of researching and writing a libretto, including the story of how saving $100 unexpectedly launched his career. And in his own words, Gene describes his role simply and powerfully: “My job is to write a libretto that inspires music.”[Subscriber Content]: In Part Two, we step back and learn more about Gene's early experiences—his time studying and singing in Vienna (including the month he saw 27 operas!). Jake opens up about the legendary Stephen Sondheim, a mentor and inspiration, and how Sweeney Todd changed his life. In fact, Jake dedicated Moby-Dick to Sondheim.Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners? And we hear from Kelly Michels, whose Forward Prize shortlisted debut collection, American Anthem, published by Gallery Press this year, focuses on the tragedies both personal and national, of the opioid epidemic and its devastating effects of addiction and of gun violence in America, where the poet grew up. We talk to Kelly about growing up in the U.S., writing about her mother's addiction, the mass shootings in her home town and her take on the American anthem.. The year: 1986 The film: American Anthem The quality: low Spencer and Jessica spend way too long this week on a deep dive into what is perhaps the most significant film in the gymnastics pantheon, teen sports-drama-romance American Anthem. Jessica lovvvveeed this movie as a middle schooler. Spencer hates everything. It's gonna get good. We discuss it all: very excellent gymnast acting, backlit hair and 13-foot-wide denim jackets, THE TRIFFUS OF MURRRDERRR, an 11-week-old Jenny Rowland putting Daniela Silivas to shame, the lovely and sensitive handling of domestic abuse (jk it's monstrous), storing your grips IN THE LEAVES, excessive gymnastics grunting sounds, and the true hero of this story—Becky Cameron. *originally recorded in April 2020 Join Club Gym Nerd (or give it as a gift!). On day one of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, President Joe Biden passed on the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris, declared his love for America, and quoted a line from the song "American Anthem" as he bid farewell. "Let me know in my heart, when my days are through. America, America, I gave my best to you." The crowd rose to their feet, screaming, "Thank you, Joe." Vice President Kamala Harris is set to speak on Thursday but gave a surprise appearance on Monday night. "This November, we will come together and declare with one voice, as one people, we are moving forward," Harris said. The theme of the first night was "For the People." Tuesday night, it is a "A Bold Vision For America's Future." Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama will speak and show America that this presidential race is about two different visions for America. Continuing on with the Barbenheimer experience, we will talk about a small independent movie called, "Oppenheimer", AKA, the "Ken" movie. Also, Angela didn't want to spend 3 hours at a movie theatre so she decided to stay home and watch a series called, "Manhattan" - and may have had a better experience. Once again, we talk about lack of (or in this case, no) Indigenous representation in a story that has a lot of Indigenous connections in relation to the atomic bomb and nuclear power. We may have misconstrued our facts and knowledge so we will link some articles and stuff that was used in preparing for this episode. There's a lot and we may not have listed all of them, but this has enough information for you to check out:https://www.trinitydownwinders.com/https://ahf.nuclearmuseum.org/ahf/profile/maria-montoya-martinez/https://ahf.nuclearmuseum.org/ahf/history/native-americans-and-manhattan-project/https://nuclearprinceton.princeton.edu/tribal-nations-and-communitieshttps://time.com/6296470/oppenheimer-navajo-uranium-mining-essay/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAnnC1SFOBYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDNLrOSCOf8https://www.sciencehistory.org/stories/magazine/in-the-shadow-of-oppenheimer/https://www.carnegiecouncil.org/media/series/ethics-on-film/ethics-on-film-discussion-of-oppenheimerhttps://www.nti.org/atomic-pulse/downwind-of-trinity-remembering-the-first-victims-of-the-atomic-bomb/https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/oppenheimer-story-behind-those-who-lost-their-land-lab-2023-07-28/https://www.abqjournal.com/news/local/new-mexicans-harmed-by-world-s-first-nuclear-bomb-test-will-win-assistance-if-tina/article_7ab74d1d-2fef-54a8-a018-334a10dfa977.htmlhttps://ahf.nuclearmuseum.org/ahf/history/los-alamos-world-war-ii/https://www.visualcapitalist.com/which-countries-have-the-most-nuclear-weapons/https://www.npr.org/2023/07/30/1191006283/people-exposed-to-fallout-from-1st-atomic-bomb-test-still-fighting-for-compensathttps://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/godzilla-was-metaphor-hiroshima-hollywood-whitewashed-it-n1236165https://searchlightnm.org/deliverance-for-downwinders-as-the-clock-winds-down-on-federal-compensation-one-womans-mission-ramps-up/The music is:"Star Spangled Banner, AKA, the American Anthem" by The Chahta Vba Isht Taloa Cocophony Orchestra ConsortAnd remember when you're out there representing us, not only do you keep it real, you keep itREEL INDIGENOUS!

CLUB KERRY NYC: Vocal Dance & Electronic - DJ Kerry John Poynter
“Absolutely crackin' mega-mix!…her newer work fits perfectly with her classics.” - Matthew Rettenmund for BoyCulture.com Two years after the original release, the visualizer (preview) for Goddess Control: The Second Coming makes its debut on the podcast to celebrate the continued success of the mix. (Full 60 minute visualizer video resides on YouTube.) Before Club Kerry NYC (with Kerry in tow) and Madonna Remixers United (MRU) became TRULY UNITED in partnership (March, 2022) there were the semi-regular and over a dozen of Kerry's "Madonna is God!" tribute megamixes on his podcast from 2013-2022. Goddess Control: The Second Coming is arguably one of the best. It definitely is one of the most downloaded episodes, charted top 100 on multiple podcast charts in many countries, and went viral on fan sites in part due to a Boyculture Blog review and posting (thanks Matt). Remixes by MRU remixers appeared in most of those megamixes and/or in many of the regular bi-weekly mix episodes in the last almost 14 years. This was somewhat purposeful rather than accidental in nature as Kerry was often on the prowl for a well produced and quality sounding Madonna remix. MRU remixers Dubtronic, Sebissimo, and ARIHLIS are still under Goddess Control! This is America's day. This is democracy's day. A day of history and hope. Of renewal and resolve. Through a crucible for the ages America has been tested anew and America has risen to the challenge. Today, we celebrate the triumph not of a candidate, but of a cause, the cause of democracy. The will of the people has been heard and the will of the people has been heeded. We have learned again that democracy is precious. Democracy is fragile. And at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed. So now, on this hallowed ground where just days ago violence sought to shake this Capitol's very foundation, we come together as one nation, under God, indivisible, to carry out the peaceful transfer of power as we have for more than two centuries. We look ahead in our uniquely American way – restless, bold, optimistic – and set our sights on the nation we know we can be and we must be. I thank my predecessors of both parties for their presence here. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. You know the resilience of our Constitution and the strength of our nation. As does President Carter, who I spoke to last night but who cannot be with us today, but whom we salute for his lifetime of service. I have just taken the sacred oath each of these patriots took — an oath first sworn by George Washington. But the American story depends not on any one of us, not on some of us, but on all of us. On “We the People” who seek a more perfect Union. This is a great nation and we are a good people. Over the centuries through storm and strife, in peace and in war, we have come so far. But we still have far to go. We will press forward with speed and urgency, for we have much to do in this winter of peril and possibility. Much to repair. Much to restore. Much to heal. Much to build. And much to gain. Few periods in our nation's history have been more challenging or difficult than the one we're in now. A once-in-a-century virus silently stalks the country. It's taken as many lives in one year as America lost in all of World War II. Millions of jobs have been lost. Hundreds of thousands of businesses closed. A cry for racial justice some 400 years in the making moves us. The dream of justice for all will be deferred no longer. A cry for survival comes from the planet itself. A cry that can't be any more desperate or any more clear. And now, a rise in political extremism, white supremacy, domestic terrorism that we must confront and we will defeat. To overcome these challenges – to restore the soul and to secure the future of America – requires more than words. It requires that most elusive of things in a democracy: Unity. Unity. In another January in Washington, on New Year's Day 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. When he put pen to paper, the President said, “If my name ever goes down into history it will be for this act and my whole soul is in it.” My whole soul is in it. Today, on this January day, my whole soul is in this: Bringing America together. Uniting our people. And uniting our nation. I ask every American to join me in this cause. Uniting to fight the common foes we face: Anger, resentment, hatred. Extremism, lawlessness, violence. Disease, joblessness, hopelessness. With unity we can do great things. Important things. We can right wrongs. We can put people to work in good jobs. We can teach our children in safe schools. We can overcome this deadly virus. We can reward work, rebuild the middle class, and make health care secure for all. We can deliver racial justice. We can make America, once again, the leading force for good in the world. I know speaking of unity can sound to some like a foolish fantasy. I know the forces that divide us are deep and they are real. But I also know they are not new. Our history has been a constant struggle between the American ideal that we are all created equal and the harsh, ugly reality that racism, nativism, fear, and demonization have long torn us apart. The battle is perennial. Victory is never assured. Through the Civil War, the Great Depression, World War, 9/11, through struggle, sacrifice, and setbacks, our “better angels” have always prevailed. In each of these moments, enough of us came together to carry all of us forward. And, we can do so now. History, faith, and reason show the way, the way of unity. We can see each other not as adversaries but as neighbors. We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop the shouting, and lower the temperature. For without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury. No progress, only exhausting outrage. No nation, only a state of chaos. This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge, and unity is the path forward. And, we must meet this moment as the United States of America. If we do that, I guarantee you, we will not fail. We have never, ever, ever failed in America when we have acted together. And so today, at this time and in this place, let us start afresh. All of us. Let us listen to one another. Hear one another. See one another. Show respect to one another. Politics need not be a raging fire destroying everything in its path. Every disagreement doesn't have to be a cause for total war. And, we must reject a culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured. My fellow Americans, we have to be different than this. America has to be better than this. And, I believe America is better than this. Just look around. Here we stand, in the shadow of a Capitol dome that was completed amid the Civil War, when the Union itself hung in the balance. Yet we endured and we prevailed. Here we stand looking out to the great Mall where Dr. King spoke of his dream. Here we stand, where 108 years ago at another inaugural, thousands of protestors tried to block brave women from marching for the right to vote. Today, we mark the swearing-in of the first woman in American history elected to national office – Vice President Kamala Harris. Don't tell me things can't change. Here we stand across the Potomac from Arlington National Cemetery, where heroes who gave the last full measure of devotion rest in eternal peace. And here we stand, just days after a riotous mob thought they could use violence to silence the will of the people, to stop the work of our democracy, and to drive us from this sacred ground. That did not happen. It will never happen. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever. To all those who supported our campaign I am humbled by the faith you have placed in us. To all those who did not support us, let me say this: Hear me out as we move forward. Take a measure of me and my heart. And if you still disagree, so be it. That's democracy. That's America. The right to dissent peaceably, within the guardrails of our Republic, is perhaps our nation's greatest strength. Yet hear me clearly: Disagreement must not lead to disunion. And I pledge this to you: I will be a President for all Americans. I will fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did. Many centuries ago, Saint Augustine, a saint of my church, wrote that a people was a multitude defined by the common objects of their love. What are the common objects we love that define us as Americans? I think I know. Opportunity. Security. Liberty. Dignity. Respect. Honor. And, yes, the truth. Recent weeks and months have taught us a painful lesson. There is truth and there are lies. Lies told for power and for profit. And each of us has a duty and responsibility, as citizens, as Americans, and especially as leaders – leaders who have pledged to honor our Constitution and protect our nation — to defend the truth and to defeat the lies. I understand that many Americans view the future with some fear and trepidation. I understand they worry about their jobs, about taking care of their families, about what comes next. I get it. But the answer is not to turn inward, to retreat into competing factions, distrusting those who don't look like you do, or worship the way you do, or don't get their news from the same sources you do. We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal. We can do this if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts. If we show a little tolerance and humility. If we're willing to stand in the other person's shoes just for a moment. Because here is the thing about life: There is no accounting for what fate will deal you. There are some days when we need a hand. There are other days when we're called on to lend one. That is how we must be with one another. And, if we are this way, our country will be stronger, more prosperous, more ready for the future. My fellow Americans, in the work ahead of us, we will need each other. We will need all our strength to persevere through this dark winter. We are entering what may well be the toughest and deadliest period of the virus. We must set aside the politics and finally face this pandemic as one nation. I promise you this: as the Bible says weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning. We will get through this, together The world is watching today. So here is my message to those beyond our borders: America has been tested and we have come out stronger for it. We will repair our alliances and engage with the world once again. Not to meet yesterday's challenges, but today's and tomorrow's. We will lead not merely by the example of our power but by the power of our example. We will be a strong and trusted partner for peace, progress, and security. We have been through so much in this nation. And, in my first act as President, I would like to ask you to join me in a moment of silent prayer to remember all those we lost this past year to the pandemic. To those 400,000 fellow Americans – mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, sons and daughters, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. We will honor them by becoming the people and nation we know we can and should be. Let us say a silent prayer for those who lost their lives, for those they left behind, and for our country. Amen. This is a time of testing. We face an attack on democracy and on truth. A raging virus. Growing inequity. The sting of systemic racism. A climate in crisis. America's role in the world. Any one of these would be enough to challenge us in profound ways. But the fact is we face them all at once, presenting this nation with the gravest of responsibilities. Now we must step up. All of us. It is a time for boldness, for there is so much to do. And, this is certain. We will be judged, you and I, for how we resolve the cascading crises of our era. Will we rise to the occasion? Will we master this rare and difficult hour? Will we meet our obligations and pass along a new and better world for our children? I believe we must and I believe we will. And when we do, we will write the next chapter in the American story. It's a story that might sound something like a song that means a lot to me. It's called “American Anthem” and there is one verse stands out for me: “The work and prayers of centuries have brought us to this day What shall be our legacy? What will our children say?… Let me know in my heart When my days are through America America I gave my best to you.” Let us add our own work and prayers to the unfolding story of our nation. If we do this then when our days are through our children and our children's children will say of us they gave their best. They did their duty. They healed a broken land. My fellow Americans, I close today where I began, with a sacred oath. Before God and all of you I give you my word. I will always level with you. I will defend the Constitution. I will defend our democracy. I will defend America. I will give my all in your service thinking not of power, but of possibilities. Not of personal interest, but of the public good. And together, we shall write an American story of hope, not fear. Of unity, not division. Of light, not darkness. An American story of decency and dignity. Of love and of healing. Of greatness and of goodness. May this be the story that guides us. The story that inspires us. The story that tells ages yet to come that we answered the call of history. We met the moment. That democracy and hope, truth and justice, did not die on our watch but thrived. That our America secured liberty at home and stood once again as a beacon to the world. That is what we owe our forebearers, one another, and generations to follow. So, with purpose and resolve we turn to the tasks of our time. Sustained by faith. Driven by conviction. And, devoted to one another and to this country we love with all our hearts. May God bless America and may God protect our troops. Thank you, America. via: https://millercenter.org/the-presidency/presidential-speeches/january-20-2021-inaugural-address

We open this segment with a recording of internationally acclaimed opera star Denyce Graves, singing "American Anthem" in the Rotunda of the US Capitol at the memorial service for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg in September of last year. Justice Ginsberg was a big fan of opera, and a big fan of Denyce Graves, and in that regard the Justice is most certainly not alone. Denyce Graves has sung in the major opera houses and with the major symphony orchestras of the world. And as she continues to perform and teach, she has recently undertaken a project to restore the original home of the National Negro Opera Company, located in Pittsburgh, and to rescue from historical neglect the many influential African Americans who distinguished themselves in the world of opera. This week, she is at the Glimmerglass Festival, a longtime summer destination for opera lovers in upstate New York, appearing in a play with music about the founder of the National Negro Opera Company, Mary Cardwell-Dawson. Denyce Graves joins us on Zoom from Cooperstown, NY… See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Olympics kick off tomorrow (maybe) but we are kicking them off today with a look back at the 1986 film, "American Anthem". This forgotten gem starring former Olympian, Mitch Gaylord is an 80s delight from start to finish. Sure no one in it can act and the guy who looks like "Simply Red" is inexplicably emotive but if you want lots of synthesizer, lots of greased up bare chests and lots of overly dramatic confrontations that lead to more greased up bare chests, then you really need to sit down and revisit this movie. It is an hour and 40 mins of time well spent. Plus we talk about the mac and cheese ice cream craze sweeping the nation, the spicy job where you can make some fast cash (sounds way more elicit than it is) and you've heard of snakes on a plane...how about under your bed? We're going for the gold this week - hope you enjoy! anne and crissy --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/crissy-shropshire/message

American communities are being hard hit with increasing violent crimes, and too many Democrat politicians don't seem to think they have any solutions, except for one! Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced publicly that the way to stop violent crime is to stop building jails and start building hospitals. Without question, not building jails is definitely one way to reduce the number of people being held in jails! A variety of New York City Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Rep. Jamaal Bowman, also attending this public announcement. She also thinks we should pay community organizers. (Isn't that part of the Democrat Party's system of operations, as Obama was a “community organizer” before becoming a politician.). What she really is doing is trying to “earmark” money for a hospital in her district.Stephen Parr explains AOC's idea of building fewer jails is not new, and definitely not a good idea! California had not build new prisons since the 1960's and by the 1980's, it had a serious over-population prison problem. So California decided build about half as many new prisons as it then actually needed. By 2011, the US Supreme Court ruled California inmates' 8th Amendment Rights were being violated by the extreme overcrowding. Louis Avallone also points out that 88 politicians have been murdered in Mexico since September, 2020! The lawlessness at the Southern Border, the Defund the Police movement, the irrational idea of building fewer prisons, and other destabilizing issues could make America an even more dangerous place. Politicians are putting even themselves at risk.If you have lived long enough, you have had opportunities to learn first-hand that life is not always fair. Everyone must deal with adversity at some point along the way. Our American Mama, Teri Netterville, shares her personal understanding that all of our “greats” in America have had to deal with adversity at some point. The keys are their perseverance of not giving up and their reliance on their God for support to get through the adversity. As Babe Ruth said, “It's hard to beat a person who never gives up.” Look for books about such Greats and start building your own personal library of inspiration.Power Causes Brain Damage….Power affects the part of the brain that processes empathy; so as you get power and you believe you deserve the power you have, your brain loses its ability to have empathy for other people. An excellent example of this is our Exhibit A: “Lord” Anthony Fauci, who lied, and as a result, people died.Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has notified the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) that unless substantial changes are made well in advance of any future Presidential elections, she will have “no choice but to advise future Republican candidates against participating in CPD-hosted debates.” Presidential Debates are supposed to be a non-partisan and federally funded, but there is a long history of both the moderators and the CPD being very pro-Democrat, election after election. Journalist Yashar Ali said, “The people who make critical decisions about the country's presidential debates—events that impact how Americans will vote or if they vote at all—are, for the most part, elites who are part of the D.C.-New York clique known as the swamp,”Even with huge financial loses, professional sports just continues to “Be Woke”. Apparently, either they are too rich or don't learn from previous mistakes! Just respect the American Flag, the American Anthem, the American Military, and play ball. That is all we ask. Why would that be so hard for a bunch of rich athletes to do?In response to the NYT's 1619 Project to rewrite American History in a way that is not factually true, President Trump created the 1776 Commission in September, 2020. The 1776 Commission produced a report promoting Patriotic Education just before Biden was sworn in. It denounced identity politics, including Critical Race Theory, and focused on the self-evident truth that we are all created equal. Biden almost immediately removed the report from the White House website; but so many had already downloaded and then re-uploaded the report, making it impossible to “kill”. And the 1776 Commission members are determined to continue meeting to complete their work.

(S3, EP 11) We reached our final guest to close out Season 3 continuing the theme, "Where Do We Stand?". MILCK (Connie Lim) is an Asian-American recording artist who first received international attention for her song "Quiet" which became viral during the Women's March in DC in 2017. It would be named by Billboard Music as "The Protest Song of the Year" in 2017. We discuss the impact that the song has had on her work as an artist and activist. She talks about her struggles breaking through as an Asian-American artist, and her hopes to use her music to help build solidarity with other marginalized communities. MILCK talks about her recently released EP, "Into Gold" which is available on all streaming services. MILCK also surprised me by performing her new single, "Somebody's Beloved". "Quiet" is translated into multiple languages by all over the world and has been featured as part of NPR's American Anthem series. In 2017, Billboard called “Quiet” the No. 1 protest song of the year. “Quiet” is also the ending theme song to Broadway play Gloria, honoring Gloria Steinem. MILCK has performed this anthem as survivors of Larry Nassar walked the stage during the 2018 ESPYS. MILCK has been honored to share her songs and thoughts on the same stages as Michelle Obama, Oprah, Cheryl Strayed, Glennon Doyle, Jason Mraz, Yoko Ono, and Ani DiFranco. MILCK partnered with GRAMMY Award-winning producer Malay (Frank Ocean, Alicia Keys) to create her EP entitled Into Gold, as shared by Reese Witherspoon and TIME magazine. MILCK founded the #ICANTKEEPQUIET fund to support nonprofits that invest in underserved communities. Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing MILCK over Zoom video! For Los Angeles-based singer and multi-instrumentalist MILCK, music is a sanctuary. In her words, “Music is the one place where I can simply be me. When I’m singing my lyrics, I don’t have to be feminine enough, strong enough, American enough, or Asian enough—I can just be a soul that yearns to feel free.”MILCK’s life took a 180 degree turn after a cell phone video of her performing her song “Quiet” with a choir of 25 strangers at the 2017 Women’s March went viral. Soon it was being echoed and interpreted by groups around the world, from the US to Sweden to Ghana. “Quiet” was named Billboard’s #1 protest song of the year and earned distinction as part of NPR’s “American Anthem” series. And in 2018, it brought MILCK to the March’s main stage in New York City, where she performed alongside the legendary Yoko Ono.Having “cemented her status as one of music’s voices for the women’s movement,” MILCK just released, “Somebody’s Beloved,” a haunting and timely new song she wrote amidst protests for Black Lives Matter. Featuring MILCK’s previous collaborator, Bipolar Sunshine as well as a diverse choir, the song will arrive alongside an equally poignant and moving music video, created in partnership with the TN-based non-profit, One Family Memphis.LISTEN/WATCH THE VIDEO FOR “SOMEBODY’S BELOVED” HERE (under embargo) “When Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Nina Pop, and George Floyd’s murders sparked a global uprising, I faced the harsh reality that as an Asian American woman, I am both a beneficiary of white privilege, and victim of systemic racism. To understand how I could be a more active part of the US’ healing from racial injustices, I started to do more research about systemic racism. As I researched Tamika Palmer and listened to her talk about the memory of her daughter, “Somebody’s Beloved” started coming through me. “Somebody’s Beloved” is a delicate yet powerful song that we hope can at least soften the vitriol that is prevalent in today’s polarized culture.” – MILCKMILCK first made waves with her global anthem “Quiet” which went viral at the inaugural Women’s March, eventually becoming the sonic parallel to the #MeToo movement and being named Billboard’s #1 protest song of the year. Given the current sociopolitical climate, “Somebody’s Beloved” will surely resonate with everyone fighting for long overdue racial justice in America. We want to hear from you! Chris Thompson is "the voice" behind the most misunderstood lyric in rock history. Is it possible to play "Blinded By The Light" and hear anything other than "revved up like a douche"? No way! But, that's only one line item on Chris's impressive resume. In addition to singing other classic Manfred Mann songs like "The Runner", his successful solo career has netted several highlights including 80s soundtrack classics from films like The Champ, All the Right Moves, and American Anthem. He also wrote "You're The Voice" which was made famous by John Farnham and is the biggest selling single in Australian rock history. We discuss his last solo album, 2016's excellent Toys and Dishes, his work with legends like Queen, Yes, and the Doobie Brothers, and he tells us his experience helping to organize the landmark Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. What's an anthem? It's a stirring call to arms or an expression of collective emotion. Sometimes it's a recognition of injustice, a representation of an oppressed group, or an inspirational message of hope. But it always captures something much larger than itself — the spirit of a community, unified in its common feeling or cause, like the time a gay men's choir sang "Make Them Hear You" at a rally in Tennessee. Or the time counter protestors sang "This Little Light Of Mine" in Charlottesville, Va. to a group of white nationalists. On July 4, NPR kicks off its American Anthem series. It'll eventually feature 50 different anthems picked by NPR staffers, music scholars, artists and listeners. In anticipation of the series, we dedicate this week's episode of All Songs Considered to anthems. We're joined by NPR's Elizabeth Blair, producer of the American Anthem series, as we reflect on the soundtracks to our collective experiences.

John Parr was one of the most promising artists of the 80s. He broke out in 1984 with the decent-sized hit "Naughty Naughty" (#23), but then he hit the jackpot when his theme for the movie St. Elmo's Fire, "Man In Motion", topped the charts in 1985. This should have launched him into the stratosphere with other heavyweights like Bryan Adams and Eddie Money, but it didn't. Once again, label politics stifled what should have been a big career. John did carry on for a few more years, recording several more movie themes along the way (Running Man, Three Men and a Baby, American Anthem, Quicksilver), but wasn't given the support he deserved. Ultimately, he's had the last laugh though, as "Man In Motion" has never gone away and he's very active on the 80s tour circuit. He's a wonderful man who's been though a lot and come out the other end victorious. Plus, you'll remember how much fun his music is. Enjoy! http://www.johnparr.net/
